BREAKING NEWS: FDA Approves ‘Game-Changing’ Pancreatic Cancer Drug
August 27, 2026 – The FDA approved a daily pill called Rasonque that in clinical trials doubled survival time for many patients compared to chemotherapy alone. NBC’s medical contributor Dr. Natalie Azar joins TODAY to break down how the drug impacts cancer treatment. “This particular medicine is targeting a protein that has eluded scientists for literally decades,” she says.

THE FACTS ABOUT DIANOSIS AND SURVIVAL
♦ Pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality rate of all major cancers.
♦ Due to the aggressive nature of pancreatic cancer and its often asymptomatic early stages, a large majority of patients are diagnosed when the cancer has already metastasized to other organs, putting them at stage 4.
♦ For all stages combined, the 5-year relative survival rate is 13%.
♦ For the small percentage (15%) of people diagnosed with stage 3 pancreatic cancer, the 5-year survival rate is only 44%.
♦ Pancreatic cancer is currently the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States after lung and colon and is expected to become the 2nd by 2030.
