Feathers Searching for Solutions to Struggles

Team Exploring Changes To Get Back to Form

Typically, by the month of June Trever Feathers would have a win, or more, on the books and he would be fine-tuning his super late model to turn top ten finishes into podiums and wins.

Thus far in 2023, the Winchester, VA native is not having that type of season.  Feathers has made all nine races he has attempted but his average finish is 14th.  Instead of fine-tuning, he is searching.

Feathers and father Bo are spending long hours in the shop trying to find the root of their issues, the reason the changes they have been making are not getting the results they expect.

Racing is never easy and, frustrating as it is, this is one of those challenges that only makes the eventual payoff sweeter when it is overcome.

Port Royal Roller Coaster

A large, high-quality field of 50 super late models signed in at Port Royal Speedway for the Appalachian Mountain Speedweek show Saturday night.  Given that context, Trever Feather’s qualifying lap that landed him 9th in Group A was not a bad start to the night at all.

Feathers went on show speed in his heat race as well, finishing in the runner up spot after starting in row two.  The 35-lap A-main was a different, yet familiar, story for the Larry Royston Racing team though.

Feathers started 13th with his eyes on racing into the top ten, but it quickly became obvious the car was not right.  Feathers fought the car from the drop of the green, falling four spots on the opening lap, and four more by lap six.  At that point, he retired from the event.

Port Royal has been a similar roller coaster ride for Feathers all season.  Good early, not good late.  Good one week, not the next.

It’s frustrating for sure.  We have been working so hard to figure out why the car isn’t responding to changes we make.  Not sure what we need to do, but we will go back to the shop and put our heads together to figure out how to go forward.“, Feathers shared.

Hagerstown

Feathers and team were back at it the following night at Hagerstown Speedway in Maryland, trying to shake off the frustrations.

Once again, Feathers came out of the gate competitive, turning in the 7th best lap in Group A qualifying in the Hot Rod Septic Treatment, Larry Royston’s Septic Services, Martins Pumping Service, McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, North River Farm, Clem’s Garage, Leggett Engine Research, Feathers & Sons Roofing, Coffelt Graphics, Larry Royston Properties, Larry Royston Equipment, Bilstein Shocks, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, Bo Feathers Racing, Barry Wright Race Cars, No.20.

The heat race was also a similar story that showed even more promise.  Feathers started 3rd and raced into 2nd in the early going, then set his sights on leader Rick Eckert.

Feathers closed on Eckert multiple times, showing his nose to the veteran.  He couldn’t quite get the run he needed to claim the top spot but the runner-up finish less than a second back was a good sign.

In the 35-lap main event, Feathers started 12th.  He did not get off to a great start, falling to 16th on lap five.  From there he found a rhythm and chipped away and recovering the lost ground.

By lap fourteen Feathers was back up to 12th and a few laps later raced his way into 11th.  The race had run green from the start and when the first caution flag appeared with six laps remaining, Feathers had cracked the top ten.

The ensuing restart is where the night took a turn.  Feathers lost two spot on lap 29, then continued to slide slowly, ending the night 18th at the checkers.

I don’t know what to say.  We were at least decent until that last restart and then the car was just terrible suddenly.”, Feathers said.  “We have to make some changes.

Feathers and the Larry Royston Racing team have not determined their plans for the upcoming weekend as of yet.  Their current efforts are in the shop working on resolving some issues. Stay tuned to Trever’s social media outlets, as well as Addicted2Dirt PR for schedule updates very soon.

Trever Feathers Out Front Early, Finishes 4th At Port Royal

Port Royal and Hagerstown Speedweek Events on the Schedule for Upcoming Weekend

Port Royal, PA – June 6, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Trever Feathers was back in action Saturday night with his backup powerplant under the hood of his Larry Royston Racing machine.  The planned three-race weekend the previous weekend was cut short due to an engine failure while running 5th at Bedford on May 26th.

Three months, but only six races, into the 2023 season, Feathers has been trying to find a rhythm for himself and his Barry Wright Icon.  It has been a struggle for numerous reasons thus far.  Saturday was a new day with the possibility of beginning a positive streak.

  • Date:  June 3, 2023
  • Track:  Port Royal Speedway
  • City, State:   Port Royal, PA
  • Quick Stats:  24 cars, Heat 2nd (3), A-main 4th (2)

Early Action

The pill Feathers pulled put him inside the second row for his 8-lap heat race.  With only 24 cars signed in, all would qualify but a top three finish would be important to make the handicap.

Feathers went right to work at the drop of the green, grabbing the runner-up spot behind leader Jeff Rine.  He pulled alongside Rine on multiple occasions but could not complete the pass to claim the top spot. The 2nd place finish was good enough to make the handicap.

It's A Start

Feathers assumed his position on the outside of the front row for the 25-lap main event in his Hot Rod Septic Treatment, Larry Royston’s Septic Services, Martins Pumping Service, McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, North River Farm, Clem’s Garage, Leggett Engine Research, Feathers & Sons Roofing, Coffelt Graphics, Larry Royston Properties, Larry Royston Equipment, Bilstein Shocks, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, Bo Feathers Racing, Barry Wright Race Cars, No.20.

The opening lap saw Feathers cross the line in the runner-up spot behind polesitter Austin Berry but he pulled alongside and officially led lap two by inches.

Feathers powered to sole possession of the lead on lap three and by lap six he had put some distance between himself and new the 2nd place occupant, veteran Rick Eckert.

On lap nine, Eckert slipped past to take the lead but Feathers hung tough in 2nd, not letting the leader get too far out of reach with the hopes lapped traffic would provide the needed opportunity to get back by.

As the race drew to a close in the final five laps, Dylan Yoder began to pressure Feathers.  In heavy traffic on lap twenty-two, both Yoder and Dillan Stake found their way past the No.20.  Feathers crossed the line in 4th.

That was a little disappointing to have the lead and go backwards late.  I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining about a top five but it’s frustrating to have the lead and not be able to hold on.”, Feathers said.

We were good but we still don’t have the balance in this car that I’m looking for.  We are getting some things figured out though.  We will get there.

Hopefully this top five finish is the beginning of that rhythm Feathers has been searching for.

Up Next

Feathers plans to join Appalachian Mountain Late Model Speedweek this weekend for Saturday’s race at Port Royal Speedway and again at Hagerstown Speedway the following night.

Feathers Weekend Cut Short After Promising Start at Bedford

Team Regrouping for Return to Port Royal Speedway June 3rd

Port Royal, PA – May 29, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

The only way to get better is to race, but that has been a struggle.  The weather over the past few months has erased a number of opportunities for Trever Feathers to go racing.  It’s been difficult to get into any kind of rhythm.

Feathers and the Larry Royston Racing team were looking forward to their first three race stint with stops at Bedford, Lincoln and Potomac over the Memorial Day weekend.  This time, the story unfolded a little differently but with a similar outcome.

  • Date:  May 26, 2023
  • Event:  Turk Burkett Tribute
  • Track:  Bedford Speedway
  • City, State:   Bedford, PA
  • Quick Stats:  33 cars, Qualifying 2nd Group A, Heat 2nd (1), A-main 20th (3)

The Right Foot

Feathers and the Hot Rod Septic Treatment, Larry Royston’s Septic Services, Martins Pumping Service, McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, North River Farm, Clem’s Garage, Leggett Engine Research, Feathers & Sons Roofing, Coffelt Graphics, Larry Royston Properties, Larry Royston Equipment, Bilstein Shocks, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, Bo Feathers Racing, Barry Wright Race Cars, No.20 were among 33 entries for Friday night’s Turk Burkett Tribute at Bedford Speedway.

The Winchester, VA wheelman got his night and weekend off on the right foot.  He turned in the 2nd quickest lap in Group A qualifying, putting himself on the pole of heat race number two.

Feathers led the first three laps of the 8-lap event but settled for a 2nd place finish behind Kyle Lee.

Positives Despite Disappointment

The top two finishers from each heat race participated in a redraw to set the first four rows of the main event starting lineup.  Feathers drew the number three pill, putting himself inside row two for the 40-lap finale.

Feathers raced inside the top five for the opening half of the race and was running a solid 5th on lap 25 when the engine went sour and he dropped off the pace.  The good night ended and disappointment moved in abruptly.

It’s no secret Bedford is not one of my best tracks, so we feel pretty good about timing well and racing really well before the issues.”, Feathers said.

There were definitely positives out of Friday night.  The car is getting better.  Now we just have to deal with the engine issue and make sure we can keep going the right direction.  Just stinks we had to miss the rest of the weekend to get regrouped.

Unwanted Days Off

Feathers and his team held out hope they would get their backup engine in place and carry on with their plans to race at Lincoln Speedway.  Those plans soon adjusted to skipping Lincoln to be ready to race Potomac on Sunday, but when additional problems were uncovered, the team was forced to abandon their plans for the remainder of the weekend.

Up Next

Feathers and the Larry Royston Racing team are regrouping and expect to be ready to return to Port Royal Speedway on Saturday night, June 3rd.

Season Stats

Trivia Question

The answer to our last trivia question is since his first full racing season in 2010, Trever Feathers has collected over 40 wins combined limited and super late model wins, so the answer was B!

Now, on to this week’s question.  Is Trever a 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation racer?

The answer in the next press release!

Feathers Building Confidence From Gains at Port Royal

Hometown Race Ahead This Weekend at Winchester Speedway

Port Royal, PA – May 9, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Trever Feathers rolled into Port Royal Speedway Saturday afternoon after being sidelined by Mother Nature for three consecutive weekends.  A break like that does not work to the advantage of a team that needs to race more, not less, to find the right combination for success.

It has been a roller coaster ride over the first two months of the season.  One race in early March, then a three week break.  Three races in early April, then another three week break.  Hopefully May will bring a steady diet of opportunities to dial in Feather’s Barry Wright Icon chassis.

  • Date:  May 6, 2023
  • Track:  Port Royal Speedway
  • City, State:   Port Royal, PA
  • Quick Stats:  30 cars, Qualifying 8th overall, Heat 3rd (3), A-main 12th (8)

Finally Back At It

The format at Port Royal Speedway Saturday evening was set to mimic the World of Outlaws Late Models program as a means of preparing teams for the upcoming visit by the traveling organization.

With a stout field of 30 cars pit-side, Feathers kicked off his night on a positive note by logging the 8th fastest lap overall.  The qualifying effort landed the Winchester, VA native in the 3rd starting spot for his heat race, giving him a solid shot at one of the top two redraw spots.

Feathers held his ground over the first two circuits, trying to find a rhythm and the best groove at the same time.  In the process, he slipped back to 4th on lap three.  He battled back to reclaim 3rd the following lap but was unable to close the gap on runner up Jeff Rine before the checkered flag fell.

One Step at a Time

Starting the 25-lap feature event from outside row four, Feathers had his sights set on earning a top five finish, but he found himself in a defensive mode during the opening laps rather than in attack mode.

By lap four Feathers had dropped to 11th.  He continued to struggle and lost another spot a few laps later.

Finally, around the halfway mark of the race, his car started to come alive.  He turned his fastest lap of the race and began to reel the top ten back in.  As good as the car was at that point, it was too much ground to make up in the caution-free race.

Feathers ended the night with a 12th place finish in the Hot Rod Septic Treatment, Larry Royston’s Septic Services, Martins Pumping Service, McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, North River Farm, Clem’s Garage, Leggett Engine Research, Feathers & Sons Roofing, Coffelt Graphics, Larry Royston Properties, Larry Royston Equipment, Bilstein Shocks, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, Bo Feathers Racing, Barry Wright Race Cars, No.20.

Well, we finished the race and we didn’t get lapped.  The way things have been going, that was the first goal.  I may have set the bar a little low for myself but at least we did that.”, Feathers chuckled.

Even though that wasn’t our best finish of the year here, that was the best I felt so far.  We are finding some balance in the car that I think we can build on.  It’s not really a secret that we stayed on the old tires mostly so far this year.  We did that so we had one less variable to deal with while we were dialing this thing in.”

Up Next

This Friday, Feathers will take the night off for some family time to celebrate his son’s birthday.

Saturday night he and the Larry Royston Racing team will visit their hometown track, Winchester (VA) Speedway looking to get back in the win column at a place where he has a a lot of success over the years.

Season Stats

5 races, 0 wins, 1 top 5’s, 2 top 10’s, 4 top 15’s

Trivia Question

The answer to our last trivia question is Trever Feathers raced his first full season in a limited late model in 2010?  He had picked up his first limited late model win the year before while racing a partial schedule.

Now, on to this week’s question.

Since his first full racing season in 2010, how many total late model wins (limited and super combined) has Trever Feathers collected?  We will make it multiple choice to help you out a little!

Is the answer…

A.  30 – 39 wins

B.  40 – 49 wins

C.  50 – 59 wins

The answer in the next press release!

Trever Feathers Salvages 6th Place Finish at Georgetown’s Mark Williams Memorial

Team Set to Return to Port Royal Speedway April 22nd

Georgetown, DE – April 19, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Trever Feathers and the Larry Royston Racing team made the midweek jaunt to Georgetown, DE for the Mark ‘Coot’ Williams Memorial Race on Thursday, April 13th.

With only 3 races under his belt coming into the event thanks to the contributions of Mother Nature, Feathers knows the team needs to race more.  It’s the only way they will get their equipment to the competitive level they need night in and night out.

  • Date:  April 13, 2023
  • Event:  Mark ‘Coot’ Williams Memorial
  • Track:  Georgetown Speedway
  • City, State:   Georgetown, DE
  • Quick Stats:  18 cars, Qualifying 7th in Group 1, Heat 8th (7), A-main 6th (13)

Feathers has been working hard to get consistent performance out of his equipment in the early going of this season.  It’s a difficult task given that dirt track racing is full of ever-changing variables from varying track surfaces to thousands of possible mechanical adjustments.

A trip to a different destination might be just what was needed to dial in the Hot Rod Septic Treatment, Larry Royston’s Septic Services, Martins Pumping Service, McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, Clem’s Garage, Leggett Engine Research, Feathers & Sons Roofing, Coffelt Graphics, Larry Royston Properties, Larry Royston Equipment, Bilstein Shocks, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, Bo Feathers Racing, Barry Wright Race Cars, No.20.

Uphill Battle

A poor qualifying effort in Group 1 put Feathers 7th on the starting grid for the first heat race of the evening.  While all cars would transfer to the A-main, only the top three finishers would make the redraw and guarantee themselves a starting spot in the first three rows of the $3,000-to-win main event.

After a disappointing time-trial run, Feathers had his work cut out for himself to get to a redraw spot.  While that was goal number one, at a minimum he needed to find out if he and his team had gone the right direction with the changes they had made.

Unfortunately, Feathers didn’t achieve either goal.  His heat race was cut short after contact just a couple laps into the event.  Back in the pit area, adjustments had to wait until after repairs were made.  The team installed a new nose on the car to make sure Feathers could make the call for the feature.

The Other Side of the Hill

In the feature event, working from his 13th starting spot, Feathers finally got to accomplish some things.  While the car was still not comfortable and didn’t have the balance he was looking for, he went the distance.

It wasn’t pretty, but Feathers brought home a 6th place finish.  In the process he learned some useful things about his car.

We weren’t great at all but the good news is tonight the car was good enough I could race it.  I got to the checkered flag and I got a good feel for what the car needs to make it more consistent and to make me more comfortable.“,  Feathers said.  “Last week at Port Royal (Speedway) we were so far off I couldn’t do that.  Some nights it’s not worth getting torn up trying to get something out of a car that it can’t give you.

The team’s plan to compete at Port Royal Speedway on Saturday, April 15th was washed out by rain.

We’ve only got four races in with this new car and we haven’t seen two similar surfaces yet, so we are still trying to learn what it needs.“, Feathers explained.  “We’ve really only run well one of those nights, so it’s not much fun so far this year.

Feathers went on to share some insight into himself and the team.

My car owner, Larry (Royston), doesn’t put any pressure on me.  He’s quiet and lets us work through things.  I put enough pressure on myself for both of us.  I’m working on getting the car right and I’m working on getting myself right too.”, Feathers shared.

“When things are going well and a night starts off bad, I have to keep myself from getting in my own head.  If I get frustrated and expect bad things, then I’m not focusing on the things I should be to help us improve.  I’m constantly working on my decisions and habits behind the wheel too.  Racing and working on this racecar are the only things that will fix our issues so we can perform at the level we know we are capable of.

The team will return to Port Royal Speedway Saturday night, April 22nd.  It is the final tune-up for the super late models at ‘The Speed Palace’ before the Lucas Oil Late Model series competes there on April 30th.

Trivia Question

The answer to our last trivia question is Trever  won his first super late model race in 2012 at the Winchester (VA) Speedway!

Now, on to this week’s question.  In what year did Trever Feathers race his first full season in a limited late model?  Hint:  He had picked up his first limited late model win the year before while racing a partial schedule.

The answer in the next press release!

Feathers Struggles To Find Combination at Port Royal

Larry Royston Racing Team Set to Tackle Georgetown and Port Royal This Week

Port Royal, PA – April 11, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

After a top five run the week before, Trever Feathers was looking to fine tune his Barry Wright Race Car and take the next step forward, but instead found himself struggling to find the right combination at Port Royal Speedway.

As is often the case with dirt racing, the surface was a little different than the week before, plus Feathers was trying things to make his program better.  That’s where the night started and it left Feathers chasing the right solution all night.

  • Date:  April 8, 2023
  • Track:  Port Royal Speedway
  • City, State:   Port Royal, PA
  • Quick Stats:  43 cars, Heat 6th (5), B-main 2nd (4), A-main 24th (22)

The Battle

With a large field of 43 super late models on hand, only the top five finishers in each of the four heat races would transfer directly to the feature event, leaving the balance of the field to duke it out in a B-main for the final four spots in the main event’s starting lineup.

Feathers drew the 5th starting spot in the final heat race of the evening and kept himself above the cut line past the halfway point of the race, but the Winchester, VA driver slipped out of a transfer spot with a few laps remaining and was unable to recover.

The changes Feathers made to the Hot Rod Septic Treatment, Larry Royston’s Septic Services, Martins Pumping Service, McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, Clem’s Garage, Leggett Engine Research, Feathers & Sons Roofing, Coffelt Graphics, Larry Royston Properties, Larry Royston Equipment, Bilstein Shocks, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, Bo Feathers Racing, Barry Wright Race Cars, No.20 in preparation for the 12-lap B-main certainly seemed to help, at least a little.  After starting 4th, Feathers raced to a runner-up finish to put his team in the show.

That was about the only positive note from the night though.  In the 25-lap A-main, Feather found himself wrestling an ill-handling ride early in the going and made the decision to save his equipment for another battle.  He parked his machine after five laps and was credited with finishing 24th officially.

We weren’t good.  That’s it.  I would like to forget about this one get to the next race.“, a frustrated and honest Feathers said.

Up Next

Trever and the Larry Royston Racing team will be headed to Georgetown Speedway Thursday, April 13th for the $3,000-to-win Mark ‘Coot’ Williams Memorial Super Late Model “Shakedown”.  If you can’t make it out to Georgetown, DE, tune into FloRacing.com at 6:30pm!

The team will then return to Port Royal Speedway Saturday night, April 15th for their $4,000-to-win show, which will include an Australian Pursuit race for the super late models.

Season Stats

3 races, 0 wins, 1 top 5’s, 1 top 10’s, 2 top 15’s

Trivia Question

The answer to our last trivia question is Trever  won seven super late model races during the 2017 season!

Now, on to this week’s question.  In what year AND at what track did Trever Feathers win his first super late model race?

The answer in the next press release!

Trever Feathers Notches Top Five at Port Royal

Winchester Wheelman Getting Comfortable in New Barry Wright Icon

Port Royal, PA – April 3, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Eventful is a kind word to use to describe Trever Feather’s trip from his shop in Winchester, VA to Port Royal Speedway Saturday morning.

Frustrating or stressful would probably be better words.

With ‘The Speed Palace’ moving up their start time to 1pm to beat the weather Saturday, Feathers and the Larry Royston Racing team were on the road early and in plenty of time, but a flat right front tire on their truck put them behind schedule and left them scrambling with only minutes to prepare when they finally arrived at the track.

Despite the chaos off the track, Feathers turned in a solid performance, which made the team’s ride home at the end of the day a little easier.

  • Date:  4/1/23
  • Track:  Port Royal Speedway
  • City, State:   Port Royal, PA
  • Quick Stats:  31 cars, Qualifying 3rd in Group B, Heat 1st (2), A-main 5th (4)

The Calm After the Storm

Fortunately for Feathers, the super late models were the last division to hit the track for hot laps, which also served as group time trials for the 31 super late models on hand.  That placement in the order of events allowed him to make the call for his qualifying session.

With virtually no time to look at the racing surface or make any adjustments, Feathers turned in the 3rd quickest lap in Group B and put himself on the front row of his heat race.

Just sitting down after qualifying helped everyone catch their breath.  That (qualifying) run showed that without even looking at the track, we knew we had a decent car.

The Racing Before the Rain

Feathers made the absolute most out of his 2nd starting spot in the second 8-lap heat race.  With the top two finishers guaranteed a spot in the redraw for a top six feature starting spot, he wasted no time mashing the gas and jumping out front.  He went on to cruise to a 3.3 second win over Mike Lupfer in the Hot Rod Septic Treatment, Larry Royston’s Septic Services, Martins Pumping Service, McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, Clem’s Garage, Leggett Engine Research, Feathers & Sons Roofing, Coffelt Graphics, Larry Royston Properties, Larry Royston Equipment, Bilstein Shocks, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, Bo Feathers Racing, Barry Wright Race Cars, No.20.

Rolling to the green for the 25-lap feature event from his spot outside row number two, Feathers again went right to work.  He laid claim to the 3rd spot and pressured Rick Eckert for the runner up spot over the opening six laps.

The first caution of the event appeared before the seventh circuit was complete.  The break in the action was somewhat lengthy and when racing did resume, the restart quickly told Feathers his tires had cooled down and were not quite the same.

Feathers slipped back to 5th in the running order on lap eight and was mired there for a large portion of the race, which included a couple more caution periods.  He was able to retake 4th at the white flag but Eckert fought back and relegated Feathers to 5th at the checkered flag.

That’s the most comfortable I have felt here in probably a couple years.“, Feathers shared.

The cautions killed me.  I wasn’t good on restarts.  It took the car a lap to get going, but it was really good on long runs.  If that race had gone non-stop, I think we were good enough to win it.  I’m pretty happy with where we are right now.  We are going the right direction and we have something to build on.

Shortly after the super late model feature, the limited late models efficiently put their feature event in the books.  Moments later, the rains came.  Feathers and his team had packed up and loaded for home just in the nick of time, putting the wraps on a hectic but good day.

A Word of Appreciation

Bo and Trever Feathers would like to thank a few people for their help and efforts to get the team back on the road to Port Royal Saturday morning.

Thanks to Brad Omps, Jimmy Richards, and most of all Dougie Timmons for finding us help.  Shout out to Trenton who swooped in and put a new tire on like he was working a pit stop at Daytona.“, said Bo.

Last but not least, thank you ‘Veno’ Travis Vance for having pit passes ready so we could get right to work. Thanks to all who did whatever they could to help.  We truly appreciate it.

Up Next

Trever and the Larry Royston Racing team will return to Port Royal Speedway on Saturday, April 8th.  Racing begins at 6pm

Season Stats

2 races, 0 wins, 1 top 5’s, 1 top 10’s, 2 top 15’s

Trivia Question

The answer to our last trivia question is Trever  won the Opening Day super late model race at Port Royal Speedway in 2020 and 2021!

Now, on to this week’s question.  How many super late model victories did Trever Feathers capture during the 2017 season?

The answer in the next press release!

Feathers Fighting to Figure Out Tricky Port Royal

Team Gathering Data and Adjusting Their New Barry Wright Icon

Port Royal, PA – March 8, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Trever Feathers has had plenty of success at The Speed Palace, Port Royal Speedway, in recent years but over the past dozen trips there, he has struggled to find the right combination.

  • Date:  3/5/23
  • Event:  Opening Day
  • Track:  Port Royal Speedway
  • City, State:  Port Royal, PA
  • Quick Stats:  29 cars, Heat 2nd (4), A-main 11th (7)

Early Action

The early March season opener at Port Royal Speedway attracted a quality field of 31 super late models, including a number of the top regional names.  The day’s format called for four 8-lap heat races, which were lined up by a random pill draw.  The top five finishers from each would transfer directly to the feature event, but only the top three would participate in the invert redraw.

Feathers lined up 4th for his heat race.  He darted to the middle at the drop of the green and claimed 3rd on the opening lap.

By the halfway mark, Feathers had tracked down then runner-up Shaun Jones and wrestled the 2nd spot away.  Colton Flinner, who held the top spot throughout the race, had built up too much of a cushion to be caught in the remaining laps, leaving Feathers with the runner-up finish and a spot in the invert redraw.

Main Event

The 3, 6, 9 and 12 pills were the invert redraw options.  The number pulled would determine the number of cars to be inverted to set the starting lineup in the 25-lap $4,000-to-win main event.  The #12 was pulled, which wasn’t the best potential outcome for Feathers, but a 7th starting spot could certainly be overcome.

A quick start is almost a necessity in the highly competitive super late model division at Port Royal Speedway.  With such close competition, the drop of the green is the best time to gain track position.  The opening lap of the feature didn’t go Feathers’ way.  From his starting spot on the low side of the speedway, he moved to open space in the middle entering turn one but was forced higher and ultimately lost a little momentum.  He managed to recover and hang on to 9th at the completion of lap one.

The remainder of the afternoon was more of the same for Feathers.  He hovered around 9th but couldn’t mount a charge deeper inside the top ten in the Hot Rod Septic Treatment, Larry Royston’s Septic Services, Martins Pumping Service, McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, Clem’s Garage, Leggett Engine Research, Feathers & Sons Roofing, Coffelt Graphics, Larry Royston Properties, Larry Royston Equipment, Bilstein Shocks, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, Bo Feathers Racing, Barry Wright Race Cars, No.20.

Feathers would up 11th after swapping positions twice on the final lap during a tight battle with Austin Berry.

We aren’t far off, but we just can’t seem to find the balance we need here during the features.  We go from a little too tight to a little too loose.“, Feathers said.  I had a really good car earlier during the heat race but we just didn’t get it right for the feature.  We are still in the mix now when the car isn’t quite right, so when we do get it right we will be good.

Over the past year we’ve been able to go other places, adjust from our baseline, and win races.  When we come here (Port Royal) the car just doesn’t react the same.  We will keep digging.  We will figure it out.“, Feathers concluded.

Up Next

Feathers and the Larry Royston Racing No.20 will return to Port Royal Speedway on March 25th to compete with the ULMS.

Keep up with the latest on Trever’s schedule all season long at Addicted2DirtPR.com/Events.

Season Stats

1 races, 0 wins, 0 top 5’s, 0 top 10’s, 1 top 15’s

Trivia Question

What two years did Trever Feathers win the Opening Day super late model race at Port Royal Speedway?  HINT:  The two wins came in back-to-back years!

The answer in the next press release!

Partner Spotlight

HOTROD Septic is an industry leader in septic treatment technology for homes and RVs.  The company was founded in 2018 after breakthrough discoveries and success in the commercial manure management sector.

On a larger scale, HOTROD’s parent company works to manufacture sustainable and organic agricultural products for large confined animal facilities to deal with common manure issues: Odor, Sludge, Solids and Contamination.

They treat 1-50 Million gallons of material at a time and can achieve full digestion with this proprietary formulation. After seeing some of the pictures of a fully digested lagoon, a family member asked if they could formulate something that would do that in a septic system. About 2-months into testing, he called to come look at a tank he had treated with the new formulation. It was completely water. The product had fully digested the waste in the tank.

Everything started right there. The family has over 40 years of experience in the septic industry which made a great platform for testing and trials. As 3rd party data was being collected, it didn’t take long to discover this was the best septic treatment ever created.

Trever Feathers Excited To Make the Old, New Again

Team Welcomes Industry Leading Hot Rod Septic Treatment as Key Partner

Winchester, VA – March 4, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Trever Feathers is excited to make the old, new again after reuniting with Larry Royston Racing and Barry Wright Race Cars, a chassis he drove to numerous wins in the first few years of his career.

Solid Equipment

Feathers is coming off a season in which he accumulated 7 wins, 4 of them in the super late model division wheeling a couple different chassis brands.  It was certainly not a shabby season statistically, but entering the 2023 season in the seat of a Barry Wright Race Car has the Winchester, VA native’s confidence high and aiming for even more.

We just couldn’t get longevity out of our cars the last couple years, so Larry went back to what we know.  Barry’s cars are built well.  You won’t find a better built car.  They have great speed when they are right and they don’t drop off after a handful of races.”, Feathers shared.

I know this car better than any other brand, so hopefully that translates to wins.  We will have a Bloomquist car in the shop as our backup.  They are great cars too.  A very similar story actually in terms of durability and quality.

It Takes Everyone

Larry Royston Racing and Trever Feathers are especially excited to welcome new partner Hot Rod Septic Treatment to the team.  The company is an industry leader in septic treatment technology for homes and RVs, plus they are great supporters of the sport of racing.

Clem’s Garage has also joined the Royston/Feathers team this season.  Clem’s is a family owned shop in Stephens City, VA that has been around for over 75 years.  They offer all types of auto repair and towing.

A long time supporter of mine, North River Farms, has rejoined the team for the 2023 season as well.  I want to give them a shout out and thank them for coming back on board.“, Feathers said.

It takes everybody.  To run a team like this, it takes a lot of resources.  We are thankful for every one of the businesses, large and small, who have put their support behind us.  We will represent and promote them to the absolute best of our ability to make sure the partnership is a win for them too.

2023 Plans

A portion of Feather’s schedule in 2023 will resemble recent seasons, with regular stops at Port Royal Speedway (PA), Winchester Speedway (VA) and Hagerstown Speedway (MD).

The remainder of the schedule will likely be a mix of visits to other areas.  The team is looking at opportunities to pick up a race at Lincoln Speedway (PA), a Lucas Oil Late Model event at Georgetown Speedway (DE), and two-race weekends in Tennessee.

From the team’s home base in Winchester, VA, travel expenses to Pennsylvania and Tennessee are nearly identical, so the team will keep an eye out for weekends when it makes sense to travel south for two races instead of heading north for a single race.

“We are going to race smart and make decisions as we go based on our equipment and, to be honest, where we have the best chance of making money.  We have to make our budget go as far as we can.”, Feathers shared.

Royston and Feathers are currently planning to race the Appalachian Mountain Speedweek, an early-June series that will consist of eight races spanning ten days across Central Pennsylvania and into Maryland.  The series will stop at Clinton County, Port Royal, Hagerstown, Path Valley, Beford (2 shows), Lincoln and Selinsgrove speedways.

We are actively working to bring in another partner to help us expand that schedule, but as things stand we are probably going to end up running about 25-30 races, similar to the past couple years.   We can run 40 or more with a little help.  We can bring a lot of visibility and promotion for our partners through broadcast races and our PR folks, so hopefully we can find that relationship that is a win-win for both us and them.“, Feathers added.

Goals

Feather’s goal for the season is not shaped around wins or any other statistics.  His first goal is to establish a baseline setup that carries from track to track.

If we can find a setup that I know I can pull into any track, unload and adjust from there, that is the foundation for success.  If we can get there, then I know we can be competitive and race for wins anywhere.“, Feathers explained.

The Winchester, VA native says other goals will be centered around what they need to learn or achieve to reach goal number one.  Those objectives will likely change week to week, but they will take it one race at a time.

As for a long term goal, that one is clear.  Feathers would like to grow their program to be capable of touring on a national level.

The long term goal may take a year or two, but to get there we need to focus on how we perform now and work on bringing in the additional partner(s) to get us there.”, Feathers said.

Thank You

I want to thank Larry (Royston) for everything he has done and for this opportunity.  His businesses, Larry Royston Septic Service and Martins Pumping Service, along with Larry Royston Properties and Larry Royston Equipment are key partners for our team.”, Feathers said.

Along with the newcomers Hot Rod Septic Treatment and Clem’s Garage, Feathers also has a number of other key members of the team back again for 2023.

Leggett Engine Research is supplying our power once again this year.  They give us the best, most reliable powerplant we could ask for every year.”, Feathers commented.

“My Uncle Jimmy and McFarland Custom Painting and Wallcoverings has been with me since the start.  Huge thanks to him And of course I need to thank my dad, Bo Feathers, for everything he does for me.  I couldn’t do this without him.  All our partners, like  Feathers & Sons Roofing, Coffelt Graphics and Billstein Shocks are important to us and we appreciate them tremendously.

“I want to give a shout out to Jonathan Dehaven.  He has been a huge help with getting the parts we need“, Feathers concluded.

Feathers Leads Most Laps, Takes 2nd at Bedford

Bedford, PA – May 6, 2022

For the second week in a row, Trever Feathers went head-to-head with one of the hottest Dirt Late Model drivers in the country, Gregg Satterlee, on Friday at Bedford Fairgrounds Speedway.

On April 23, the 29-year-old outdueled the recent Lucas Oil Series winner for a $3,500 win at hometown track Winchester (Va.) Speedway.

At the big half-mile clay oval last Friday, Feathers led a race-high 25 laps from the outside pole of the 86th annual Billy Winn Classic but couldn’t muster the late-race strength to counteract Satterlee’s $12,086 romp.

While Satterlee led the final 12 laps, Feathers finished four seconds behind and content in the runner-up position aboard the No. 20 Larry Royston’s Septic Services / Martins Pumping Service / Feathers & Sons Roofing / Fastenal of Winchester, VA / McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / MB Sports Collectibles / Leggett Engine Research / Coffelt Graphics / Larry Royston Properties / Larry Royston Equipment / Bilstein Shocks / Longhorn Chassis.

     (31 cars, Qualifying 2nd in group/3rd overall, Heat 2nd, A-main 2nd)

We were one adjustment away from starting outside the pole and leading the whole thing. It is what it is,” Feathers said. “(Bedford) is difficult. Satterlee has been rolling the past four or five years here; I think he’s won just about every big race you can (at Bedford). It is what it is, tonight was a good night all the way around.”

That’s about the best we’ve been here,” Feathers added. “We generally suck at this place. This is my worst racetrack we go to. It’s somewhat of a win tonight even though we ran second.

Satterlee, the 17th-ranked driver in DirtonDirt.com’s weekly poll, was the only driver that stood in the way of Feathers last Friday — qualifying quick time while Feathers time-trialed second of 31 cars and winning heat two with Feathers in tow.

Much like his Winchester sweep on April 23, Feathers needed little time to get going. By lap five, Feathers built a 1.5-second advantage ahead of polesitter Ross Robinson, where the Winchester, Va., native paced the opening 16 laps. On lap 17, reigning Bedford track champion Jeff Rine caught Feathers backpedaling off turn four to complete the race’s first of three lead changes.

Feathers regathered himself on lap 18, racing by Rine to lead through lap 26.

I don’t want to say I was screwing around, but I was trying to find the line the car needed to be able to get back away from Rine,” Feathers said. “I was watching (my father Bo Feathers providing signals) and when I ran my normal line, I was pulling away a bit. When I started to get in traffic, I was trying to find a line that would suit the car a little bit better, because I knew I was killing my tires.”

We had a good car to start; a good car until halfway. Then I started to get tight; it was getting tight and then I was burning the rear tires up trying to free the car. It just wasn’t our night.

Friday marked Feathers’ fifth top-five finish in six races this season.

Feathers logged his seventh race of 2022 on Saturday at Port Royal, which did not go according to plan. The 2021 Opening Day winner at The Speed Palace got caught up in a mid-race incident that knocked him out of the 25-lap feature.

Additionally, the incident issued frame damage to Feathers’ primary race car that will sideline him and Larry Royston Racing for at least this weekend.
