Reinhardt and Capitol Renegade Team Tackle Eldora for First Time

Demanding Summer Schedule Slated Through Knoxville Nationals

Kyle Reinhardt has been anxiously awaiting his first opportunity to tackle “The Big E”, Eldora Speedway, in Western Ohio.  Eldora is legendary and is often mentioned in the same breath as Knoxville Raceway.  Both are facilities where any sprint car driver wants to someday stand in victory lane.

 

In the midst of his first season on the road, traveling with the All Star Circuit of Champions, Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team added the Kings Royal to their schedule.  Make that two Kings Royals.  Mid-July 2021 would provide four consecutive nights of racing, including the 37th and 38th Kings Royals.  Both crown jewel events would pay a whopping $175,000 to the winner, so it certainly seemed like a good opportunity to make their debut and learn a lot in one week. 

 

7/14:  Jokers Wild at Eldora Speedway – New Weston, OH

      (57 cars:  Qualifying 21st in Flight 2, Non-Qualifier 1st, Heat 12th,  C-main 4th)

 

The Jokers Wild, a Kings Royal preliminary night, is run under the World of Outlaws format, which meant the 57 teams that entered competition Wednesday night were divided into two flights for qualifying.  Kyle Reinhardt was the 4th car to hit the speedway in Flight 2, but he was unable to capitalize on the early slot.  He registered the 21st quickest lap of the 28 cars in his group,  which meant he would need to race in an 8-lap non-qualifiers event.  Finishing in a transfer position in that race would put Reinhardt directly into a heat race, where he would have a chance to race for a spot in the B-main or A-main.  

 

The Neptune City, NJ native jumped out to a lead in the non-qualifiers race, and never looked back, winning the race and claiming his spot in the third heat race.  After starting 12th in the heat race, Reinhardt was unable to make forward progress in the opening laps.  Needing to get to at least 6th position to avoid the C-main, the team decided to pull in early and save the equipment for the next battle.  

 

Reinhardt started 4th in the C-main, needing to finish in the top two positions to advance to the B-main, however it wasn’t in the cards.  He ‘held serve’ and finished 4th, missing the cut, and bringing an end to his first night at Eldora.

 

Thu 7/15 & Sat 7/17:  38th King’s Royal at Eldora Speedway – New Weston, OH

      (61 cars:  Qualifying 46th overall, Heat 6th,  B-main 14th)

 

Last year, the pandemic caused the 2020 Kings Royal (the 37th edition) to be postponed to 2021.  For Eldora Speedway, scheduling two major events in one week, when combined with logistical and ticketing considerations, meant the 2021 King’s Royal (the 38th edition) would be run before the 37th edition.  Confused?  Yeah, not surprised, but just go with it.

 

The Thursday evening show used the traditional Kings Royal format, with the entire 61 car field qualifying as one group against each other.  An unlucky pill draw put Reinhardt 50th in the time trail order, which he used to log the 46th fastest lap of the evening.  

 

The qualifying result landed the All Star Circuit of Champions Rookie of the Year candidate in the 8th starting spot for heat number four, but he would have to wait nearly two days to take the green flag in that event.  The rains came just after heat one was completed Thursday night, delaying the rest of the program to Saturday afternoon.

 

When the show resumed Saturday afternoon, Reinhardt rolled off in the 8th starting spot of heat number four.  On the tricky daylight surface, he charged into 6th place on the opening lap and held onto the position to transfer directly into the B-main.  In that Last Chance Showdown, passing was at a premium and Reinhardt settled for a 14th place finish.

 

Sat 7/17:  37th King’s Royal at Eldora Speedway – New Weston, OH

      (58 cars:  Qualifying 43rd overall, Heat 8th,  C-main 5th, B-main 16th)

 

Following a break that lasted nearly three hours while the track was reworked and fans were cleared out and reprocessed to allow ticket holders from the rescheduled 2020 event to settle into their seats, 58 teams rolled onto the speedway to kick off what was officially the 37th King’s Royal as the sun began to set.

 

Once again, the special event format was in use, meaning the entire field qualified under the clock as one large group, not in flights.  Qualifying late in this format can be difficult as track conditions deteriorate.  Reinhardt had drawn a high pill, placing him 53rd in line to hit the track.  His best lap of 13.705 was only good enough for 43rd overall.

 

Reinhardt started and finished 8th in the first heat event of the night, transferring him to the 7th starting spot in the C-main.  Kyle was aggressive and managed to battle his way forward as far as 4th for a few laps, but he found himself in 5th when the checkered flag fell on the 12-lap race.  With six cars transferring, it was good enough to move on to the B-main.

 

Starting on the back row of the B-main, in 21st position, knowing it was a tall order to transfer to the A-main, Reinhardt made the most of his seat time.  Once again, he passed cars, chipping his way forward to the 16th spot by the time the 15-lap last chance showdown concluded.  The night, and week, came to a close for the Capitol Renegade team.  

  

When asked about his first experience making laps at Eldora Speedway, without hesitation Reinhardt quickly summed it up in a single word:  “Intense“. 

 

“We raced pretty well, but we didn’t time trial well, so it was an uphill battle.  I was learning every time I hit the track and the team was learning too.  We were improving each day“, Reinhardt commented, reflecting on his performance in his inaugural trip to the legendary facility. 

 

“Our goal coming here was to make one of the big shows.  We didn’t accomplish that goal, but we did build a good notebook for next time.  I got more comfortable each night.  If we can step up our qualifying game next time, we’ll be right in the mix.  I’m really looking forward to coming back here in September“, Reinhardt said.

The next four weeks will be quite a test for Kyle and the Capitol Renegade team.  In a few days, they will travel to the Midwest to resume the All Star Circuit of Champions schedule.  The series will close out July with 7 races in 9 days across Missouri, Kansas, and Iowa.  The team will remain on the road to open the month of August, competing in the 360 and 410 Nationals at Knoxville Raceway, as well as the Capitani Classic at Knoxville and the Front Row Challenge at Southern Iowa Speedway.

 

“We’ll be away from home for a long stretch this summer but I’m looking forward to getting back to the Midwest and racing a lot.  I’ve raced at Lake Ozark, Knoxville, and Southern Iowa, but like most of our schedule this year, the other stops will be new for us.  We’ll keep building our notebook.  The more we race, the better“, Reinhardt said.  

 

The All Star Circuit of Champions schedule for the remainder of July takes team through parts of Missouri, Kansas and Iowa.

Can’t Shake the Monkey Off Their Back

A flat tire, Mother Nature, and an engine failure.  Those are the answers to a riddle nobody’s laughing at.

 

The question was, “What three things have made Zach Newlin 0-3 at Williams Grove Speedway since he scored a podium finish there on April 23rd?”.  Every racer goes through stretches like that.  The good news is, they can’t last forever.  Right?

 

Friday night, July 16th, Newlin and the Mansberger Motorsports team were among 22 HJ Towing and Recovery 358 sprint cars entered to compete in the Summer Series event at Williams Grove Speedway.  The team came ready with a new bullet under the hood, determined to return to running at the front of the field as they had done earlier in the season.

 

Three 8-lap heats were lined up using a random pill draw, which put Newlin in the 6th starting spot in the third heat.  All cars would qualify for the feature event, with the top four going to the redraw for the top twelve starting spots.

 

Newlin was good from the drop of the green in his heat race, quickly surging forward into a redraw spot, then methodically navigating his way toward the front.  Coming off turn four to take the white flag, just as Zach Daddy made his move into 2nd place, the monkey on the back of Newlin and the 21m team woke up again.  The motor suddenly let go in a big puff of smoke and the fluids poured out all over the Williams Grove clay as the car rolled to a stop at the turn one end of the front stretch.

 

0-4.

 

The 358 sprint cars will be back at “The Grove” on July 30th.  Newlin and Mansberger hope to be among them, but that will depend on how their motor situation unfolds in the coming week.

 

One thing is certain.  When they can eventually ditch that monkey, everyone is going to have to contend with the Newlin/Mansberger combination.

Kyle Reinhardt Searching for Right Combination

Short Track Struggles Continue for All Star Rookie

Kyle Reinhardt and his team knew their first season traveling with the All Star Circuit of Champions would bring a lot of firsts and a lot of challenges.  As they kicked off the second half of their rookie season, they had already seen nearly two dozen new tracks, while competing against some of the toughest competition in the sprint car world.

 

Reinhardt and team had their moments during the first half of the season, capturing his first All Star victory and six top 10’s, but the areas where they struggled had also become apparent.  Consistency during the remainder of the season hinges on overcoming those struggles.

 

7/9:  Stateline Speedway – Busti, NY

      (Qualifying 7th, Heat 3rd,  A-main 14th)

 

A modest field of 21 cars signed in for competition at Stateline Speedway.  Kyle Reinhardt used his number four slot in time trials to register the 7th quickest overall lap.  It was a respectable lap, especially given Reinhardt’s only previous laps at the facility were the three hot laps he had run just minutes before.  

 

Having earned a starting spot on the outside of the front row in the first heat, Reinhardt’s mission was to win and put himself into the night’s dash redraw.  The qualifying event did not unfold under his terms however.  Paul McMahan and Tyler Courtney beat him to the checkers, and as a result, handed Reinhardt the 11th starting position in the A-main instead of a shot at a top-8 slot.

 

The All Star Rookie of the Year contender was unable to build any momentum in the 30-lap A-main at Stateline and ultimately came home 14th.  

 

7/10:  Sharon Speedway – Hartford, OH

      (Qualifying 23rd overall/5th in group C, Heat 5th,  B-main 6th, A-main 19th)

 

The All Star Circuit of Champions series departed New York, journeyed 2 hours southwest, crossing the northwest corner of Pennsylvania, and ventured just into Ohio to visit Sharon Speedway.  Night one of the 2-day Lou Blaney Memorial drew 43 teams for competition.  

 

Reinhardt’s night didn’t get off to an ideal start.  During qualifying, he logged the 5th best lap in Group C and 26th ranked lap overall.  Starting 5th in the third heat, the Neptune City, NJ native had a simple goal:  gain one spot and transfer to the A-main.  Easier said than done.  Despite his best efforts, Reinhardt was unable to overtake Bill Balog for the 4th position and was relegated to the B-main as a result of his 5th place finish. 

 

The Capitol Renegade team used lessons learned in the heat race to make adjustments prior to the B-main, in which Reinhardt would start 4th.  The surface at Sharon Speedway had slicked off, moving the high groove all the way to the fence.  The No.91 felt good at the drop of the green, enabling Reinhardt to get off to a great start.  He was right on Rico Abreu’s tail tank, lining up a pass for 3rd, when he slipped over the cushion and slapped the fence, breaking the W-link.  Reinhardt managed to wrestle his ride to the finish but gave up two spots over the course of the 12-lap event, eventually finishing 6th.

 

Having missed a transfer position during the B-main due to the W-link issue, Reinhardt and team decided to utilize one of their available All Star provisionals to join the back of the field for the A-main.  Reinhardt started 25th and advanced to the 19th spot by the end of the 30-lap event.

 

The Sunday finale of the Lou Blaney Memorial at Sharon Speedway was unfortunately cancelled due to inclement weather.

 

“The takeaway from this weekend is we still have work to do on our small track program.  We’ve made some gains on the small, slick, dirty surfaces but we’re still not where we need to be.  We’re close but we need to keep learning and working hard“, Reinhardt shared.

Kyle and the Capitol Renegade team will remain in Ohio to run the 37th and 38th King’s Royal events at Eldora Speedway July 14th-17th.  It will be Reinhardt’s first trip to ‘The Big E’ and he is excited for the opportunity.  

 

“I’m excited to get back to a big, fast track and to finally run Eldora.  Our big track program is good and we will get four consecutive nights there, which is a big plus“, Reinhardt shared.  “Hopefully we’ll be good from the time we unload but as we learn things, we can apply them the very next day.  Being at Eldora multiple nights will help accelerate our learning curve.”

Austin Berry Shows Team Has Reached a New Level

Disaster Strikes Two Laps Short of Podium Finish

Four weeks had passed since the last super late model race at Port Royal Speedway.  Scheduling and weather combined to create the longest gap of the season.  It was an excruciatingly long gap for Austin Berry, who wanted nothing more than to get back behind the wheel after his June 12th victory at “The Speed Palace”.   The hard fought victory was his first in a super late model, and his new goal was to prove it was no fluke.

 

Saturday night, July 10th, 29 teams descended on Port Royal Speedway to compete for the $3,000 top prize.  The speedway used the dual 6-lap heat format to set the starting lineup for the night’s main event.  In the format, a random draw is used to set the heat race lineups and drivers earn passing points based on their finishing position vs. their starting position.  After 6 laps, the starting lineup is inverted and the field races another 6 laps, once again earning points at the conclusion.

 

Berry started 5th in both heat race segments and finished 2nd and 5th respectively, earning his team enough points to start 7th in the A-main later in the program.  In his first heat race, Berry was on the charge from the drop of the green, able to run varied lines to make passes.  In his second heat race, he was able to move forward on the start, holding the 4th spot for a few laps before being forced high in turn two while working on 3rd.  The line he was forced to take allowed Jeff Rine to slip by on the low side, dropping Berry back to 5th where he ultimately finished.

 

Factoring in their starting position and the ever-changing track conditions, ABR made their setup and tire choices just prior to rolling out for the 25-lap feature event.  During the opening laps, Berry slipped backward from 7th to 10th in the running order but he didn’t panic.  The choices the team had made were made for the long run, so he just needed to stay focused on the task at hand.  

 

By the time the caution lights flashed on with nine laps complete, Berry had recovered to 7th position.  Through two more cautions on laps eleven and twelve, Berry maintained his position, gaining one spot through attrition.  With eight laps remaining, Berry was on the rear bumper of Gary Stuhler and Colton Flinner as the trio competed for spots 5-7.  In turn four, with Stuhler on the bottom and Flinner high, Berry split the pair, taking the 6th spot away from Flinner and challenging Stuhler for 5th as they entered turn one.  The pair would swap positions twice over the next couple laps.

 

On lap 21, Berry used the high side to power past Stuhler and Dillan Stake to claim the 3rd position behind leader Jeff Rine and 2nd running Dylan Yoder.  Through a hard-fought main event, Berry was positioned to register a podium finish and show the Port Royal crowd that he and his team are capable of running up front consistently and June 12th was no fluke.

 

Then, disaster.  Coming through turns three and four to receive the 2-to-go sign, the water pump broke, causing water to coat the front tires.  Unable to steer his No.86 machine, Berry slid into the outside fence, abruptly and harshly ending his great run.  He was officially credited with a 17th place finish, but that certainly didn’t tell the whole store by itself. 

 

“How can I be mad?“, asked car owner and Austin’s father, Ken Berry.  “It was just a crazy, fluke thing.  Yeah, we’re gonna have some bills to pay and a lot of work to do the next week or two, but we’re running well and Austin is doing a great job behind the wheel”, Berry commented.  “We’re confident in him and he’s confident in the car, so we are  in a good place right now.  We just need to get this thing fixed up and get back to the track as soon as we can so we don’t lose our momentum.“

 

Given the damage caused by the impact with the outside fence, the Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, Addicted2DirtPR.com, Nathan Berry Beef Farm, A&C Racing Engines, JDS Racing, Ontime Body & Graphic, Swift Springs, Penske Racing Shocks, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, VP Racing Fuels, Rocket Chassis XR1 will be out of action this weekend.  Plans to race at Hagerstown Speedway have unfortunately been scrapped.  The team will spend their time making repairs and going over the car thoroughly to make sure they find any component that was affected by the crash.  Berry and team indicated they have a 50/50 shot to be ready for Selinsgrove Speedway’s super late model show on July 24th but they expect to return to action at Port Royal Speedway on July 31st, if not sooner.

Reinhardt Hits PA Speedweek Events to Maintain Momentum

Second Half of All Star Rookie Campaign Set to Kick Off

On the heels of the grueling All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek in June, Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade, Champion Racing Oil, Henry’s Wrecker Service team took some time off to recharge.  The break in the All Stars’ schedule after Ohio Speedweek lasts nearly three weeks, but they knew they couldn’t sit on the sidelines that long and hope to maintain the momentum they had built in the closing days of the Ohio stint.  To ensure they remained sharp, the team loaded up and headed back to the track for a handful of Pennsylvania Speedweek shows.

 

7/2:  Williams Grove Speedway – Mechanicsburg, PA

      (Qualifying 6th, Heat 3rd,  A-main 11th)

 

Reinhardt’s night got off to a solid and promising start when he registered the 6th quickest time against the field of 32 teams taking their shot at the $15,000 to win Mitch Smith Memorial at Williams Grove Speedway.  The time put him on the pole of his heat race and set the team up for a good night.  

 

The night took a step backward when Reinhardt gave up some ground in the heat race and settled for a 3rd place finish, missing the redraw for the prime starting spots in the A-main.

 

The Neptune City, NJ native started 13th in the feature event.  Reinhardt struggled early and slipped backwards a few positions.  A late surge as a result of attrition combined with earned positions netted the team an 11th place finish when the dust had settled.

 

“It wasn’t quite the finish we should have earned here tonight, but the good news is we know exactly what we did wrong with the car.  We have to learn from it and move on“, Reinhardt explained.

 

7/3:  Port Royal Speedway – Port Royal, PA  (rained out)

 

Reinhardt and team were looking forward to track time at ‘The Speed Palace’.  They had struggled there earlier in the year, so the opportunity would serve as a barometer of their progress in preparation for some lucrative events later in the year at the popular Central Pennsylvania half-mile.  Unfortunately, Mother Nature inserted herself noticeably into the equation and wiped out the program just after hot laps had begun.

 

7/4:  Selinsgrove Speedway – Selinsgrove, PA

      (Qualifying 2nd, Heat 3rd,  A-main 13th)

 

The Independence Day holiday brought 33 race teams to the PA Speedweek finale at a facility that Reinhardt considers his favorite.  He’s had quite a bit of success at Selinsgrove Speedway in recent years, but it was his favorite long before he found success there.  Kyle owns 5 total victories at the track. He also won the 2019 360 sprint car and 2020 410 sprint car track championships at the big half-mile that many call ‘the Knoxville of the East’ because of its size, shape and speed.  

 

Despite not turning an laps at Selinsgrove since last season, Reinhardt had clearly not forgotten his way around the Snyder County oval.  He logged the 2nd fastest lap during time trials, then captured a 3rd place finish in his heat race to lock himself into the redraw.

 

Reinhardt’s good fortune continued when he pulled the pole position during the redraw.  The initial green flag didn’t go quite as well for the All Star Rookie contender though, as Danny Dietrich got to the line first and secured the top spot by turn one.  The scramble at the drop of the green cost Reinhardt initial momentum and before the first lap was complete, he had slipped to third behind Brent Marks as well.  

 

Reinhardt pursued Dietrich and Marks throughout the event, but despite his best efforts and the benefit of two restarts, he was unable to reclaim the positions he had lost.  He ultimately rode home comfortably in third, keeping his guard up and never allowing fourth place Rico Abreu to get close enough to threaten for a spot on the podium.  

 

It was following the event that Reinhardt and team were caught off-guard when they came up light at the scales.  Despite passing over the scales with no issues following qualifying and bolting on additional weight prior to the feature to offset fuel burn-off, they did not meet the minimum weight and were officially credited with a 13th place finish as the last car on the lead lap.

 

“We were really good tonight and we were good Friday.  Based on the few laps we were able to make at Port last night before the rain, we were going to be good there too, so we’re confident we’re going the right direction and can continue to make gains“, Reinhardt explained.  “We’re anxious to head back out with the All Stars next weekend and get the second half of the season off on the right foot.“

Berry Aiming to Remain Hot in Super Late Model Action

Momentum is Key to Readiness for Big Shows at End of Summer

Over the recent holiday weekend, Austin Berry was anxious to return to Port Royal Speedway, the scene of his first super late model victory a few weeks earlier, to build on the team’s early summer momentum.  Unfortunately, Mother Nature stepped in, washed out the show, and forced Berry and the rest of the ABR team to wait another week.

 

This Saturday, July 10th, ABR will bring the Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, Addicted2DirtPR.com, Nathan Berry Beef Farm, A&C Racing Engines, JDS Racing, Ontime Body & Graphic, Swift Springs, Penske Racing Shocks, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, VP Racing Fuels, Rocket Chassis XR1 back to ‘The Speed Palace’ once again.

 

Berry and team also plan to race with the ULMS at Hagerstown on July 17th and return to Port Royal at the end of the month, on July 31st, as part of the 15th Annual Living Legends Dream Race program.  An additional race could find its way onto the team’s July schedule before all is said and done, depending how things unfold during the month.

 

The team has been racing smart this season, making well-planned decisions about when and where to race to make the most of the equipment, resources and budget they have available.  So far it’s been working well.  

“The short term goal is to choose our battles wisely to keep our equipment in good shape and be able to race competitively against the tough fields we consistently face in this area.  The longer term goal is to build momentum and have the resources to be able to compete in the bigger shows at the end of the summer, like the Lucas Oil Series shows at Port Royal.  Hopefully we can accomplish both“, Berry shared.

Zach Newlin and Burke Motorsports Part Ways

Zach Newlin and the Burke Motorsports 410 sprint car team have decided to part ways effective this week.  Sometimes teams stay together for years, but more often, changes are needed to get the right combination for success.  This is just one of those cases.

 

The pairing had been competing on a part time basis in Central Pennsylvania since they joined forces in late August 2020.  They entered 14 events together, with the majority being against touring series competition.  Although both had raced with success for many years at other levels, the opportunity was the first venture into 410 sprint cars for both Newlin and Burke Motorsports.    

 

In the seat time he had, Newlin showed signs of his ability to adapt to the powerful machines, such as garnering the Hard Charger Award at Port Royal Speedway’s Labor Day Classic and making veteran-like moves at Williams Grove Speedway that caught the attention of Johnny Gibson, the long-time voice of the World of Outlaws, during a broadcast.

 

Newlin, who captured a win at Williams Grove last year in his first 358 sprint car season and also has quite a resume of accomplishments in 305 sprint cars in the past decade, will continue to pursue a 410 sprint car opportunity, but for now will focus his efforts on 358 sprint car competition with Mansberger Motorsports.

 

“I’m eager to get back in a 410 and show what I can do.  I learned a lot in my first opportunity and I know I can get the job done“, Newlin shared.

Newlin’s Night Cut Short at The Grove

Sometimes things don’t go your way and there’s nothing you can do about it.  Zach Newlin certainly can testify to that lately.  His last opportunity at Williams Grove Speedway was taken away by Mother Nature and the chance before that ended prematurely with a flat tire after starting inside the top 10.  When he returned to the legendary oval last week, he was just looking to have some fun and log a top five finish like he knew the team was capable of.  

 

Twenty HJ Towing and Recovery 358 sprint cars signed in to compete at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, June 26th.  Two 8-lap heats were lined up using a handicapping system based on the season point standings, which put Newlin in the 6th starting spot in the first heat.  

 

The wheelman from Millerstown, PA realized quickly at the drop of the green that he had a good car under him.  He was able to move forward right out of the gate, and the car was balanced and comfortable.  Halfway through the race, as he moved into 3rd, the engine blew and abruptly brought an end to Newlin’s night.

 

The feature lineup was to be ‘heads-up’ based on the heat finishes, therefore until the failure, Newlin was likely in line for a 6th starting spot and a solid shot at the top five finish he wanted out of the night, but once again something beyond his control intervened.  

 

In July, Zach Daddy and the Mansberger Motorsports team will compete in two 358 sprint car events at Williams Grove Speedway.  You can bet they will be determined to not let that monkey get too comfortable on their back.  The pair of Summer Series points races are scheduled for July 16th and July 30th.

Zach Newlin Focusing on Seat Time

This Friday night, June 25th, Zach Newlin will climb aboard the Mansberger Motorsports No.21m 358 Sprint Car at Williams Grove Speedway.  Newlin is anxious to get back to the legendary oval.  Due to a rainout earlier this month, it has been one month since his last opportunity to chase a checkered flag at ‘The Grove’.

 

After a rainout Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway that prevented Newlin from strapping into the Burke Motorsports 410 sprint car, Newlin Racing decided to break out their familiar 11z for the first time this season on Sunday.  The goal was simple:  seat time for Zach Daddy.  With their trusty 358 engine under the hood, they made the tow to Path Valley Speedway to enter the first 410 sprint car race held at the track in several years.  The bullring levels the playing field a bit and is suitable for smaller engines to compete against the bigger engines.  “The night didn’t go as well as hoped, but it was good to get the family team back together for a night.  We need to get that motor refreshed before we can think about running anywhere else really“, Newlin explained.  

 

Looking ahead to July, Williams Grove Speedway has the 358 sprint cars on the schedule twice.  Scheduled for July 16th and July 30th, the events are Summer Series points races for the division.  The Newlin/Mansberger duo plans to compete in both races and attempt to move into the top 5 in the season point standings.  Newlin currently sits 7th after 3 races.

Reinhardt Finds Speed Again During Ohio Speedweek Stretch Run

Closes First Half of Rookie ASCoC Season with Momentum

Following a difficult start to the All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek, Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade, Champion Racing Oil, Henry’s Wrecker Service team used the week’s only off day on June 13th to regroup and refocus.

 

Those words are used often in the sport, but what do people really mean when they use those terms?  Often people are referring to problem solving, hard work, and attention to detail relating to the car.  Sometimes the time is spent improving team communications and preparation.  It takes all those things to succeed.

 

The off day was clearly well used by Reinhardt and his team.  Their results the following two nights showed improvement, winning a heat race, making a dash, and qualifying for both main events.  The key would be to sustain that improvement and continue that trend through the rest of the week and beyond.  

 

6/16:  Waynesfield Raceway Park – Waynesfield, OH

      (Qualifying 9th overall / 2nd in group, Heat 3rd,  A-main 19th)

 

Round five of Ohio Sprint Speedweek brought 42 teams to Waynesfield Raceway Park to take a shot at the $6,000 winner’s share.  Kyle Reinhardt was the first to go under the clock in Group C for qualifying (19th overall).  He registered the 2nd quickest lap in his group and 9th best overall, a good start to the night in Western Ohio.   

 

After running second for most of the third heat race, Reinhardt ultimately finished 3rd, qualifying for the A-main but missing the dash.  Cale Thomas won the heat race and Tyler Courtney, the group’s fastest qualifier, finished just ahead of Reinhardt, claiming the two available tickets to the dash. 

 

Reinhardt started 16th in the A-main and worked his way to 14th by lap 10, but would fade slightly a few laps later.  He settled into 18th for the middle portion of the race and ultimately crossed the line 19th at the conclusion of the 35-lap event.  

 

“We were decent early but just missed it at the end of the night.  We took a shot at it but it wasn’t quite what we needed.  We learn from it and move on down the road“, Reinhardt shared.

 

6/17:  Muskingum County Speedway – Dresden, OH

      (Qualifying 8th overall / 4th in group, Heat 1st,  Dash 5th, A-main 12th)

 

Move on down the road is exactly what they did, along with 38 other teams.  About two hours southeast to be exact to Muskingum County Speedway for round six of Speedweek.

 

Once again drawing a pill that placed him in Group C, Reinhardt logged the 8th quickest time overall, 4th quickest in his group.  The effort put him on the pole of the second heat.  The Capitol Renegade, Champion Racing Oil, Henry’s Wrecker Service No.91 looked strong, pulling out to a lead that wasn’t challenged throughout the 8-lap race.  The Neptune City, NJ native claimed the win over Cory Eliason by two seconds, earning a spot in the dash redraw for the night.  

 

“We’ve qualified for two shows via our heat race, we’ve been in two B-mains and now we’ve made two dashes, so we’ve about covered it all this week!”, Reinhardt joked as he described the teams Speedweek experience thus far to series announcer, Blake Anderson, prior to making his pick.  An unlucky draw put Reinhardt in the 5th starting spot of dash number two.  It was tough to advance in the short, 4-lap event, which meant he would start the night’s A-main from outside row five in the 10th position.

 

It took several attempts to get the 25-lap feature event started successfully and complete a lap under green flag conditions.  The initial attempts produced spinning cars and caution flags.  The third attempt wasn’t much different and unfortunately for Reinhardt he was in the wrong place at the wrong time on the high side of turn one when Paul McMahon got sideways.  Running 9th at the time, he was able to narrowly avoid McMahon but then found Cory Eliason on his side directly in his path.  Reinhardt came to a stop with some minor front end damage.  Members of several teams pitched in to help the Capitol Renegade crew make repairs in the work area so the No.91 could rejoin the field.

 

Reinhardt restarted 23rd after the incident and went right to work when the race resumed.  He methodically worked his way forward, dicing through traffic while dealing with poor visibility due to the dry and dusty racing surface.  Over the final half dozen laps, Reinhardt’s car was the fastest machine on the track as he surged forward, wheeling his J&J Chassis wherever he wanted to put it to make passes.  His comeback came to a close with a 12th place finish, a solid recovery for the hand he had been dealt with the opening lap incident.

 

“We were rolling!  The car was really, really good.  Bob and Robbie gave me a great car tonight.  It’s unfortunate what happened at the start.  I think we were a top-5 car, maybe even a podium, if that had not happened.“, an energized Reinhardt said after the race.  “I’ve never been here to Muskingum before.  This is a fun track to race!“, he said.

 

6/18:  Limaland Motorsports Park – Lima, OH  (rained out)

 

Mother Nature claimed her one and only victim of the entire Ohio Speedweek on Friday when persistent rains and a bleak forecast forced the cancelation of the scheduled event at the 3-tenths mile oval.

 

6/19:  Portsmouth Raceway Park – Portsmouth, OH

      (Qualifying 13th overall / 3rd in group, Heat 1st,  Dash 1st, A-main 20th)

 

Following the unplanned night off, 37 teams rolled into Portsmouth Raceway Park in southern Ohio for the Speedweek finale, the Dean Knittle Memorial, which would pay $17,554 to the victor.

 

Once again, Reinhardt’s qualifying effort  was good, logging the 3rd best time in his group and 13th overall.  Making the most of the front row starting spot the time trial run provided, Reinhardt flexed his muscle a little, winning the heat race over Zeb Wise by 2.6 seconds and earning a spot in the dash redraw for the second consecutive night.

 

In the dash redraw, Reinhardt once again gave himself a front row starting spot, this time next to Rico Abreu.  On the initial start, Abreu executed a slide job in turn one, but Reinhardt crossed over and drove back under the No.24 of Abreu.  Rico pulled even with Kyle in turn three but Reinhardt kept his foot to the floor and powered back around Abreu on the high side to take the lead for good.  With that, Reinhardt had given himself his third front row starting spot of the night, and this time it would be for the top prize in the 30-lap A-main.

 

Once again, Reinhardt showed his strength by powering around the high side of the 3/8th mile oval, building momentum until he was close enough to strike with a slide job on leader Danny Dietrich in turn three.  Reinhardt powered to the lead off turn four and would settle into the top spot for the first six laps.

 

Zeb Wise and Tyler Courtney were breathing down Reinhardt’s neck the entire time, and eventually each took their shot at the front of the field as well.  The trio sliced and diced, running within inches of each other for several laps that had fans on their feet and holding their breath.

 

The caution lights flashed on with 19 laps remaining.  On the ensuing restart, Reinhardt generated a huge run off turn two and down the backstretch.  As he was about to overtake the No.10 of Zeb Wise, Reinhardt brushed the outside wall and deflected into Wise, causing the pair to crash.  

 

Reinhard was able to rejoin the field and restart 16th after some quick repairs, however three laps later, with 15 to go, he came to a stop in turn four with his right rear tire going down.  All Star rules do not provide for any guaranteed time in the work area once the race reaches the halfway point, so the flat tire brought an end to the night for the Capitol Renegade No.91.

 

“Racing hard and clipped the wall and it sent me down the track into Zeb.  I feel terrible for him, his crew, and my guys.  We spoke after the accident and the most important thing is that he is ok“, Reinhardt tweeted at the end of the night regarding the crash.

 

After wrapping up his first career Ohio Speedweek, Reinhardt summarized the team’s week.  “We definitely improved all week long.  We won our last two heat races, we made 3 dashes in our last 5 races, and we led some laps in the A-main, so we feel really confident about our improvements and direction“,  Reinhardt commented.  “Unfortunately, we don’t have the feature finishes to show how much better we were, but we definitely made gains on the dry-slick surfaces that were giving us so much trouble.“

 

“Bob and I are gelling more with time.  We’ve only been racing together for a few months, so that’s just part of it.  We’ve been racing a lot the past month.  That has helped.  We’re getting on the same page“, Reinhardt explained while discussing his new crew chief.

 

Having already garnered one victory in Reinhardt’s rookie campaign on the All Star tour, the team sits 9th in the point standings at the halfway point of the season with 4 heat wins and 2 dash wins.  Given the team accomplished those things while working through their struggles, the recent improvements should make for an exciting and competitive second half of the season for Reinhardt aboard the Capitol Renegade No.91.

All Star Circuit of Champions’ teams get a well-deserved break following the grueling Ohio Sprint Speedweek.  Series action will resume on July 9th at Stateline Speedway in Busti, NY, followed by the 2-day Lou Blaney Memorial event at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, OH on July 10th-11th.

 

In the meantime, Reinhardt and team will participate in at least a portion of Pennsylvania Speedweek to remain sharp and continue their momentum. While the Capitol Renegade team plans to keep some of their primary equipment fresh, they will run the first three races of the PA series at Williams Grove Speedway, Lincoln Speedway and BAPS Motor Speedway June 25-27, then make a decision regarding the remaining events in the 10-day, 10-race summer tradition in PA.
