Some Good News for ABR

Motor Issue Was Not Major; Return Set for Saturday

Mifflin, PA – July 30, 2020By Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

We now rejoin our regularly scheduled race season. When we last left you, Austin Berry had a good night ruined by engine failure. While you (or we) have been gone, Hershey Racing Engines got to the bottom of the issue and made the necessary repairs. Fortunately the issue was not as disastrous as it could have been.

The team will have their primary bullet back under the hood of their Rocket Chassis XR1 in time for the August 1st ULMS Super Late Model show at Port Royal Speedway, where they will compete for the $3,000 winner’s share.

Coming off a night that saw the Swift Springs, MS Shock Therapy, Hershey Racing Engines, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Nathan Berry Beef Farm #86 register the 7th quickest lap of a 32 car field, the ABR team hopes to continue to build on that as we enter the late summer portion of the schedule.

The 2020 season has been a bit disjointed for everyone. It’s been difficult to get into a rhythm and make progress. It’s been no different for Berry. Putting together a consistent home stretch to the season would not only be rewarding on its own merit, it would be extremely valuable toward knowing how to evaluate his equipment and plan for 2021.

Newlin Racing Releases Remaining 2020 Schedule

String of Outings Kicks Off at Williams Grove This Friday

Millerstown, PA – July 27, 2020By Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

The 2020 racing season has been an unusual one to say the least. Team, track and series schedules have been interrupted and shuffled at the hands of a pandemic. That alone makes it difficult for a team to build consistency and momentum. For a team that just moved up into a new division, that challenge is made even more difficult by not being able to compete regularly to build their notebook.

Opportunities to race have returned to a more regular cadence over the past month and a half, plus area speedways are attempting to add races to make up for early season losses. With a few races under their belt to work out the bugs, Zach and the rest of the Newlin Racing team are ready to get into a consistent rhythm over the second half of the season. Fans can look for the Smith Concrete & Construction / J.W. Smith Auto Body / T&M Homebuilders, Inc. / Heather Sims, Realtor / Walker Performance Filtration / Newlin Bar Service #11z in action on these upcoming dates:

7/31 – Williams Grove Speedway
8/1 – Lincoln Speedway (tentative)
8/8 – Lincoln Speedway
8/14 – Williams Grove Speedway
8/29 – BAPS Motor Speedway
9/4 – Williams Grove Speedway
9/12 – Lincoln Speedway
9/25 – Williams Grove Speedway
9/26 – Lincoln Speedway (tentative)
10/17 – Lincoln Speedway

Please help support those who support our team! There are many great businesses and great people listed below without whom we couldn’t do this!

We look forward to seeing everyone at the track!

Newlin Racing Records Top 10 in Return

Getting back on track…literally and figuratively

Mechanicsburg, PA – July 17, 2020By Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

After two disappointing outings due to motor issues, followed by two weeks on the sideline while the motor was repaired, Newlin Racing’s goal for their return was pretty simple: Finish.

Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway the 358 sprint cars joined the All Star Circuit of Champions 410’s for the Tommy Hinnershitz Classic. 28 cars signed in and lineups were set for three 8-lap heats for the 358’s. 6 would qualify from each, with the top 4 going to the redraw.

A good draw placed the Smith Concrete & Construction / J.W. Smith Auto Body / T&M Homebuilders, Inc. / Heather Sims, Realtor / Walker Performance Filtration / Newlin Bar Service #11z of Zach Newlin on the outside of the front row for heat 1. Polesitter Steve Owings rode the high side to an early lead, while Zach settled into second and pursued Owings. Following a lap 6 restart, Newlin pulled even with Owings entering turn 3 and continued to race side by side for the next lap. Newlin put himself in front by about a half car length entering turn 3 on the final lap but Owings was able to regain the lead coming off turn 4 to win by a car length at the line. The finish was still good enough to put the 11z of Newlin in the redraw.

The motor that had spent over a week in the care of Hammaker Racing Engines was doing its job. The team just needed to monitor track conditions during the 410 A-main and make the right decisions to give Zach the chance to move forward from his 10th starting spot in the 358 feature event.

The feature event saw very limited passing. Newlin was able to run just inside the top 10 for the entire race, withstanding multiple restarts that bunched the field. The track surface was very slick, causing most of the field to cling to the bottom groove where a small amount of moisture remained in the surface. That made passing possible only when someone slipped up out of the groove. Zach was able to keep his J&J Chassis in that groove and execute a pass on a lap 14 restart to record a 9th place finish.

It wasn’t a podium finish but it was a solid night and the team had the opportunity to learn what worked and what didn’t for the conditions. You can’t do that from the sidelines, so they were happy to be back in the game. On to the next race, which as of now is set for July 31st at Williams Grove.

Zach’s assessment of the night: “We finished!”, he said with a grin. Mission accomplished.

Newlin Racing Targeting Friday Return

358’s Sprints to Join the 410’s for Tommy Hinnershitz Classic at Williams Grove

Millerstown, PA – July 13, 2020By Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Is it possible that sitting out for a couple weeks and having your motor torn down could lead to optimism? Sure.

The Smith Concrete & Construction / J.W. Smith Auto Body / T&M Homebuilders, Inc. / Heather Sims, Realtor / Walker Performance Filtration / Newlin Bar Service #11z has been strong in its handful of appearances thus far in 2020 but recent motor woes sidelined the team for a couple weeks.

While a definitive return date is still in pencil, it appears things are lining up for Zach Newlin to strap himself back into his J&J chassis this Friday, July 17th at Williams Grove Speedway when the 358 Sprints join the All Star Circuit of Champions 410 Sprints who are in town to compete in the Tommy Classic.

So let’s get back to how an ill motor turns into a good thing. Let me explain. Given the issues that were uncovered, it’s pretty likely that even when they ran well, they didn’t really have the benefit of all the power their motor could have been providing. When those issues are resolved and they get to bolt that bullet back into the 11z… well, that’s how a motor issue ends up leading to optimism. The potential exists Newlin will have even more available to his right foot than he did before. We shall see.

There is a week of hard work ahead to be able to make their goal of returning to action Friday night a reality but they believe they can be ready. Stay tuned to Newlin Racing or #TeamA2D’s social media outlets later this week for updates on their return to the track!

A Sweet Night Gone Sour for ABR

Hard Work + Test Session = Positive Results

Port Royal, PA – July 12, 2020By Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Recent weeks have been filled with a lot of activity in the ABR camp. That activity was born from a determination to solve their handling mysteries and get back to where they were in the past with their Rocket Chassis XR1. The team has been putting in the hours in the shop, working with partners to find answers and most recently participated in a test session to gather some data about what is working and what isn’t.

Saturday night July 11th at Port Royal Speedway, ABR was among 32 super late models that signed in to try to claim of the $3000 top prize at the end of the night. The evening got off to a great start when Austin registered a lap of 20.093 in time trials, good enough for 7th quickest in the solid field. That lap alone seemed to serve as validation that the efforts the team has been making were paying off.

It was far too early to read too much into the good lap though. Time trials call for a slightly more aggressive setup in the car than race conditions do, so the team made the necessary adjustments to prepare for their heat race. Austin’s qualifying run put the Swift Springs, MS Shock Therapy, Hershey Racing Engines, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Nathan Berry Beef Farm #86 on the pole of heat 3 along side Ross Robinson. Five would qualify from each of the four 8-lap heats, with the top 2 from each event going to the redraw, thus guaranteeing the competitor a top 8 starting spot in the feature event. So far it appeared to be a sweet evening in the making.

At the drop of the green in heat 3 with Berry on the inside of the front row, he would enter turn one with a slight edge on Robinson, drive a little deeper into the corner and attempt to slide up to the higher groove in front of the 7r. He didn’t quite have enough momentum though and settled into second to begin his pursuit. On lap 2 after building some rhythm, he began to close slightly on the leader, indicating a battle for the lead may develop. The caution waved before the field could complete the lap and that’s when things suddenly and unexpectedly went sour for ABR. The two dreaded words: engine failure.

The motor produced sounds it shouldn’t and the power went away. Berry quickly shut it down to try to save it from any further harm and he coasted to a stop in turn 1, ending a promising night. Gregg Satterlee went on to defeat Ross Robinson and Kyle Lee in the feature event later that evening.

The good news for ABR: the team has clearly made significant progress during the past month. As a direct result of their hard work, research and testing, the car and its pilot were smoother, faster and more consistent Saturday night than that combination has been all season.

The bad news for ABR: until the motor is out of the car, torn down and examined, they won’t know the extent of the damage or how long it will keep them out of action. The best case scenario is probably a return when the super late models next compete at Port Royal Speedway on August 1st. Let’s not think about the worst case scenario for now.

ABR Heading in the Right Direction

Outing at The Speed Palace Shows Signs of Promise

Port Royal, PA – July 4, 2020By Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

A stout field of 31 super late models signed in at Port Royal Speedway to compete in the stock car portion of the Greg Hodnett Classic PA Sprint Car Speedweek finale. Every team’s first goal was to be one of the 24 that would make the night’s main event. After a lot of work at the shop during the week to get to the bottom of their handling issues, it was time to find out if those late nights would pay off for ABR and the #86 would be one of those 24.

An unlucky pill draw lined Austin Berry up 7th in the 8-car 3rd heat with several heavy-hitters. Comments around the pit area were that it was clearly the toughest heat of the night. Not only did it turn out to be tough, it was quite eventful. Due to another competitor checking-up on the initial start, Berry was forced to spin the car in turn 4 to attempt to avoid contact. He didn’t avoid contact completely but he did manage to avoid anything that would force his Rocket Chassis XR1 to the pits.

Austin restarted at the rear of the field and one lap later looped the car in turn 3 when a 3-wheel brake issue occurred. Some might have thought at this point it was just time to park it. Things were clearly not going their way. That’s not how Austin Berry is built though. It was an opportunity to clear his head, focus and rise to the challenge. And rise he did. Starting at the rear once again, he drove into the 5th and final transfer spot on lap 3 of the 8-lap qualifying race. Yeah he got a little help when one car dropped out and it certainly wasn’t pretty, but he raced his way into the show.

The heat race run placed the Swift Springs, MS Shock Therapy, Hershey Racing Engines, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter and Nathan Berry Beef Farm #86 in the 19th starting position for the evening’s 25-lap main event. The crew made right-side body repairs from the earlier contact and decided on a few adjustments to improve on some things from the earlier heat race, as well as to keep up with the changing track surface. When the feature race went green, Berry was able to move forward and challenge for position. In fact, by lap 10 he had moved into 16th and was sizing up the 15th place car. Austin later shared, “To get better and try to go to the next level in this super-competitive division, we changed a lot of things over the winter and found out quickly this year we were going to have to learn the car all over again. We basically had to take 2 steps backwards before we could start going forward again. Tonight the car finally started to feel close to where it was a year ago, so knowing we are learning and making the right decisions helps our confidence a lot.“.

Austin Berry Racing at Port Royal Speedway 7-4-2020

The car seemed to lose momentum at the halfway point and a couple quick checks of the gauges over laps 13 and 14 showed the engine was slowly losing oil pressure. Berry had to make the unwanted left turn into the work area and retire from the event. It clearly wasn’t the ending they wanted but there were definitely good things to take away from the night. There was something positive to build on.

Next up for ABR is the $3000 to win Summer Championship at Port Royal Speedway on Saturday July 11, 2020.

Newlin Racing’s Night at Port Royal Cut Short

Motor Issues Continue to Plague Team

Port Royal, PA – July 1, 2020By Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Just five nights earlier an apparent fuel issue ended Zach Newlin’s night while leading at Williams Grove. Over the ensuing few days, the team discovered another piece to the puzzle that ended that potential winning run Friday night. With that issue addressed, the team unloaded at Port Royal Wednesday night and performed final preparation to take on the URC cars.

The Smith Concrete & Construction / J.W. Smith Auto Body / T&M Homebuilders, Inc. / Heather Sims, Realtor / Walker Performance Filtration / Newlin Bar Service #11z was quick and handling well on the opening circuit or two of hot laps, but suddenly motor issues surfaced again. Not wanting to risk losing the motor completely, Newlin quickly exited the speedway and shut the car down. Unable to identify and resolve the issue at the track, the team had to make the smart choice and withdraw from the evening’s competition rather than risk being out of action for much longer.

Efforts are already underway to get to the bottom of the issue and get back in action very soon. Overcoming these challenges will only make the reward sweeter when the team eventually parks it in victory lane.

Stay tuned to the A2D website or the social media channels listed below for updates from Newlin Racing, including when and where they will hit the track next!
