Finds Victory Lane in Rookie Season

Caleb Newlin strapped into his go-kart Friday night to race for only about the tenth time in his life.  As a matter of fact, all those races have been in 2021, his first season competing.  He was set to compete in the Pre-Rookie Caged division at Seven Stars Speedway, a dirt track just outside Millerstown, PA, about 25 minutes northeast of Port Royal Speedway.  It is a track where a lot of young Central PA racers have learned the craft of racing.

 

Following hot laps, Newlin officially kicked off the night by starting on the outside of the front row in his heat race.  He settled into second at the drop of the green and held on firmly to finish 2nd in the qualifying race.  The finish earned him the second starting spot in the feature later that night.

 

The young Newlin, son of sprint car racer “Zach Daddy” Zach Newlin, took advantage of his starting spot in the feature event and grabbed the lead on lap one.  After leading for several laps, Newlin slipped to second.  

 

Caleb wasn’t ready to give up just yet though.  He battled back to reclaim the lead a lap later.  With two laps remaining, the yellow flag slowed the field.  Newlin survived the restart and remained out front to claim his first ever racing victory.  

 

It was a happy night for Caleb and his family, especially after the young racer missed several races due to a broken wrist and multiple rainouts this season.  There are a few more races remaining this year for Newlin, so we will have to stay tuned to see if he can collect another checkered flag during his rookie season.

Reinhardt Earns First Career Tuscarora 50 Start

Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team rolled into Port Royal Speedway last week for the three-night, All Star sanctioned, Tuscarora 50 that has become the centerpiece of the season schedule at “The Speed Palace”.  The team had struggled on the tricky surface in earlier season appearances and was aiming to show the strides they had made since then, plus hopefully take home a chunk of the cash that was up for grabs at the lucrative event.

 

9/9:  Port Royal Speedway – Port Royal, PA 

        (45 cars, Qualifying 4th in group B/12th overall, Heat 2nd,A-main 22nd)

 

With 45 teams singed in to compete, the “41 or more” All Star format was in use, dividing teams into 5 equal groups of nine cars for hot laps, qualifying and heat races.  

 

Reinhardt qualified 4th quickest in Group B, giving him the pole for the second 8-lap heat race, with Bill Balog lined up beside him.  Balog used the preferred outside line to beat Kyle to turn one at the drop of the green.  Reinhardt chased Balog but was unable to run him down and settled for the runner-up finish and a spot in the A-main.

 

Rolling to the green for the 30-lap feature from his 12th starting spot, Reinhardt looked racy at the start.  He held his ground, briefly claimed 11th, and threatened to move into the top 10 during the first half of the A-main.  The handling of the Capitol Renegade No.91 went away as the race moved into the later stages, causing the All Star Rookie of the Year candidate to slip back a handful of positions.  With about five laps remaining, Reinhardt quickly lifted and pulled down out of the groove when it seemed the motor had gone sour.  The issue ended his night and left him with a 22nd place finish officially.  Fortunately, the team later determined it was a header issue and nothing terminal.

  

9/10:  Night Before the 50 at Port Royal Speedway – Port Royal, PA 

          (55 cars, Qualifying 5th in group B/21st overall, Heat 6th, B-main 8th, A-main 22nd)

 

Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team made repairs and returned to “The Speed Palace”
Friday for The Night Before the 50, along with 54 other teams, to go after the $10,000 winner’s share.  Given the hefty car count, the same format was in play as the previous night.

 

The qualifying effort by Reinhardt left him 5th fastest in Group B, which meant he would need to climb his way into one of the four transfer spots in the second 8-lap heat.  It wasn’t in the cards on this night, and the Neptune City, NJ native found himself on the outside looking in, crossing the line 6th at the finish.

 

Relegated to an 8th place start in the 12-lap B-main, Reinhardt once again needed to climb into the top four to make the A-main.  Despite his best efforts, he couldn’t make it happen and again found himself on the outside looking in.  He settled for an 8th place finish and opted to use a provisional to start the feature event.  Reinhardt started 27th in the 30-lap A-main and came home in 22nd.  

 

“This was just one of those nights.  If you miss it early in qualifying, you spend the rest of the night trying to recover.  We’ll come back tomorrow and try to get out of the gate a little stronger“, Reinhardt shared.

 

9/11:  Tuscarora 50 at Port Royal Speedway – Port Royal, PA 

          (57 cars, Qualifying 11th in flight B, Heat 2nd, A-main 23rd)

 

Saturday night’s goal for Kyle Reinhardt was very simple:  Make the starting field for the 54th Annual Tuscarora 50.  It would be no easy task with a stout field of 57 cars in the pits.  Reinhardt had tried a few times in the past but had come up short, including 2020 when he blew a right rear tire while leading the B-main by a large margin.

 

The Tuscarora 50 uses its own unique format.  The field was divided into two flights for qualifying.  Within each flight, the field would then be divided into three heat races based on lap times.  A 4-car invert meant the fastest car in each heat started 4th, while the 4th fastest qualifier started on the pole.  The remainder of the field lined up by qualifying time behind those four.  Only the top three finishers would advance to the A-main, with each of the winners drawing for one of the top six starting spots.  Meanwhile, 4th-6th would move to the B-main and everyone from 7th back would fall to the C-main.

 

Reinhardt was the 9th of 28 cars to hit the track for Flight 2 time trials.  His lap of 18.640 was good enough for 11th in his flight and it kept him inside the inversion for the heat
race.  It was the first step to a good night.  It put Reinhardt on the pole of heat number five, giving him the best opportunity he could ask for to claim one of those top three spots and put himself into his first Tuscarora 50.

 

When the green flag dropped on the 8-lap heat race, Reinhardt surged to the point and took control of the race.  As the laps clicked off, 2nd place Dylan Cisney found his groove and began to reel in the Capitol Renegade No.91 of Reinhardt.  As the pair received the two to
go sign, Cisney took his shot.  He not only took the lead away from Reinhardt, along with it he claimed one of the top six starting spots in the feature.  It was a minor disappointment, but Reinhardt knew he didn’t give it away.  Cisney was just better than him in that event.  

 

The bottom line.  He would be in the starting field for his first Tuscarora 50.

 

Reinhardt took the green for the 50-lap finale from a very respectable 12th starting spot.  While the long distance race can be about tire conservation and pace, Kyle wasted no time
grabbing some track position by jumping into the top ten on the opening circuit.  During the opening segment, Reinhardt hovered around the 10th position, then slipping a couple spots by lap 15.  

 

That’s when the handle seemed to go away significantly.  By the time the field reached lap 20, Reinhardt was struggling and had faded to 22nd.  He restarted in that spot after the
halfway break, then slipped further back to 25th for a bit before recovering to 23rd at the checkered flag.  It certainly wasn’t the finish he or the team wanted or expected given how their night had gone.  They simply missed the setup that they needed to be competitive in the second half of the event.

 

The week did however end on a positive note for the Capitol Renegade team.  Jim and Sandy Kline regularly offer bonus money to a randomly chosen finisher in the feature events at Port Royal Speedway.  For the Tuscarora 50, they set that amount as a generous $6,000.  The random draw turned up pill #23, handing the cash to 23rd place finisher, Reinhardt.

 

While the finishes were certainly not satisfying, the team did show their improvement by timing well and earning spots in two of the three main events.  Putting an entire night together and finishing as strong as they start has been the elusive holy grail in recent weeks.  

 

“We made our first Tuscarora 50, so we’re definitely happy about that.  We continued to show speed early too.  We just need to keep working hard to put it all together and be more consistent throughout the night“, Reinhardt commented.

Newlin Tackles First Tuscarora 50 Event in Pryde Motorsports Ride

New Pairing Continues to Dial In Right Combination

When a new sprint car team takes shape in the late season in Central Pennsylvania, there is no easy path to getting laps and learning to work together to dial in the car for the new pilot.  They will face a lot of tough competition in what amounts to PA’s own version of the “month of money”.

 

Zach Newlin’s phone rang only weeks ago.  While there were still quite a few races remaining on the 2021 schedule in the area, most of them at this time of year are shows that include touring groups and large car counts.  That didn’t deter this new pairing from their agenda. 

 

Friday 9/10:  55 cars, Qualifying 7th in group, Heat 8th, C-main 13th

 

Newlin was one of a stout field of 55 to enter All Star Circuit of Champions competition at Port Royal Speedway for The Night Before the 50.  A qualifying lap of 16.399 placed him 7th quickest of the 11 drivers in group A.  

 

The Millerstown, PA native started 7th and held a firm grasp on the spot in the first heat race for the first six laps, but was challenged by Tyler Reeser as the 8-lap heat drew to a close.  The top four finishers would move on to the A-main, while 5-7 would go to the B-main and 8-11 to the C-main.  Newlin ultimately finished 8th, costing him a spot in the B-main.

 

The 10-lap C-main started off well for Newlin.  From his 4th starting spot, he surged forward on the opening lap, claiming the 3rd position.  Only the top two finishers would move on to the B-main, so Zach would need to lasso one more spot to advance.  

 

The red lights flashed on and All Star officials called the red flag over the one way radios as the field as about to complete lap one.  Unfortunately, as Newlin slowed near the start/finish line, Danny Dietrich did not.  He collided with the right rear of Newlin’s No.29.  The impact damaged the headers and destroyed the tire, top wing, nerf bar and W-link, ending the night for the Pryde Motorsports team.  They were officially credited with a 13th place finish. 

 

Saturday 9/11:  57 cars, Qualifying 21st, Heat 7th, C-main 3rd, Non-Qualifiers Race 

 

A little elbow grease and sweat late Friday night and Saturday afternoon had the Del Grosso, Gio’s BBQ, Robert Lee Jr. Trucking, R&B Auto Proz, Quality Masonry, Grove Financial & Associates, Dillman Hauling, Ron’s RV Sales No.29 ready for action again.  The team returned to Port Royal Speedway Saturday night for the 54th Annual Tuscarora 50.

 

The hefty purse offering $54,000 to win and $1,500 to start drew 57 teams to the Juniata County half-mile oval for the early September tradition that leverages its own unique format.  

 

The field was divided into two flights for qualifying.  Within each flight, the field would then be divided into three heat races based on lap times.  A 4-car invert meant the fastest car in each heat started 4th, while the 4th fastest qualifier started on the pole.  The remainder of the field lined up by qualifying time behind those four.  Only the top three finishers would advance to the A-main, while 4th-6th would move to the B-main and everyone from 7th back would go to the C-main.

 

Zach Newlin registered the 21st fastest lap of 29 cars in Flight A, which placed him 7th in the starting lineup for the third heat.  Once again, Newlin got a strong start and grabbed the 6th position away from Hunter Schuerenberg.  A couple laps later, the No.55 of Schuerenberg battled back and reclaimed the spot.  Newlin worked hard to run down the All Star regular for the final spot in the B-main but was unsuccessful and finished 7th.

 

The C-main resulted in yet another case of one spot short.  After starting 5th officially, Newlin took the green in 4th when the polesitter couldn’t make the call.  It took three attempts to get the race started.  When it did finally get rolling, Zach was able to take 3rd over Lucas Wolfe and pull away by a few car lengths.  Newlin went on to finish 3rd, just missing the transfer to the B-main.

 

The night wasn’t quite over for Newlin.  Port Royal Speedway runs a non-qualifiers race at the end of the program, including a nice payout, to give those teams a chance to make something for their efforts.  Zach lined up 8th for the 20-lap event and held the 7th position until the halfway point.  He slipped a couple spots late in the race and eventually finished 9th. 

 

The weekend results won’t grab any headlines for Newlin, but there were small victories and several positives to carry forward.  He and the team were there to learn and to build, and they accomplished that.

Reinhardt Makes Small Gains at Attica

Attention Turns to Tuscarora 50 at Port Royal

Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade No.91 team have struggled at Attica in two attempts earlier this season.  Both the April and June events at the one-third mile banked clay oval located on the Attica Fairgrounds in north central Ohio resulted in DNQ’s for the team on its rookie campaign with the All Stars.  Early September brought a pair of opportunities at Attica to show the improvement they have made as a team over the course of the 2021 season.

 

9/3:  Attica Raceway Park – Attica, OH

      (39 cars, Qualifying 6th in group D/30th overall, Heat 7th, B-main 4th, A-main 16th)

 

Night one of the two day All Star Circuit of Champions event at Attica Raceway Park saw 39 teams pit-side to compete for the $5,000 preliminary night top prize.  Kyle Reinhardt was the first in group D, and 31st overall, to hit the track for qualifying.

 

The struggles for Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team at Attica continued, as his qualifying lap of 13.057 was only good enough for 6th quickest in his group, placing him outside row three for the fourth heat race.  

 

The top five finishers from each heat would transfer to the A-main, but Reinhardt wasn’t able to mount a challenge for a transfer spot.  He rode home in 7th, relegating him to the B-main for one more shot to make the field.

 

Reinhardt would need to turn things around in the 12-lap B-main and he did just that.  He started 8th and steadily drove forward.  By lap 9 he was in 5th position and within striking distance of a transfer spot.  Reinhardt was able to run his fastest lap of the race on lap 11 and use the momentum to execute a last lap pass to claim the 4th and final transfer spot into the A-main.

 

Rolling off from his 24th starting spot, the All Star Rookie of the Year candidate continued turning a bad night into a good one.  During the 35-lap A-main, Reinhardt battled his way forward, making the most of a few restarts.  When the checkered flag flew, the Capitol Renegade No.91 had reached 16th.  Had it not been for brake issues late in the going, the result would likely have even been a few spots better, but given the team’s 2021 record at Attica, it was step in the right direction.  Going +4 in the B-main and +8 in the A-main shows progress is being made.  

  

9/4:  Attica Raceway Park – Attica, OH

      (36 cars, Qualifying 3rd in group B/11th overall, Heat 2nd, A-main 23rd)

 

Reinhardt and team returned Saturday night for the $10,000 to win Attica Ambush finale, hoping to continue their momentum.  They were one of 36 teams signed in to take their shot at the attractive purse.

 

Qualifying in Group B Saturday night, Kyle registered the 11th best overall lap, good enough for 3rd in the group.  Reinhardt started the second heat from outside the front row and chased leader Jac Haudenchild throughout the 8-lap event.  A win would have meant a spot in the dash redraw for the Neptune City, NJ native but he was unable to get by “The Wild Child” and settled for the runner-up finish.

 

Their 12th place start in the A-main Saturday night showed the steady gains that Reinhardt and crew chief Bob Curtis had made at Attica in 2021.  Unfortunately, the results at the end of the night were not as indicative.  The Capitol Renegade team has been making changes trying to solve recurring brake issues in recent months, but unfortunately the issue resurfaced early in Saturday’s A-main at Attica.  Reinhardt fought an unwinnable battle as he slowly slid back through the field, eventually calling it a night, and taking a 23rd place finish.

Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team will return to familiar turf, Port Royal Speedway, to race in the highly lucrative, 3-day, All Star sanctioned Tuscarora 50.  The event spans September 9th-11th, paying $8,000, $10,000, and $54,000 to the winner respectively.

Millerstown, PA Wheelman Ready to Prove Himself in the 410 Division

Late in the 2020 season, Zach Newlin got his long-awaited first shot in a 410 sprint car.  He was able to get a dozen or so races under his belt during that opportunity.  It was long enough though that he knew for certain he was hooked.  Open seats are not plentiful by any stretch of the imagination in the top winged division.  “Zach Daddy”, as he is known by his fan base, was patiently planning, hoping, and waiting for his next opportunity.

 

Enter Allen Pryde.  He was the man with an open seat who dialed Zach’s number a few weeks ago with the idea they should run a few races together to finish out the 2021 season.  Newlin agreed to the deal, which included his brother and long-time crew chief Lance Newlin to help with the car.  

 

Saturday 9/4:  31 cars, Heat 6th, B-main 7th

 

The new combination decided to kick off their venture at Port Royal Speedway’s Saturday night Juniata County Fair opener.  The $5,000 to win show for 410 sprint cars drew a healthy field of 31 teams, which were divided into four 8-lap heats lined up by a random pill draw.  The top five finishers from each would transfer to the A-main, with the top 3 handicapped to shape the first six rows of the starting lineup.

 

When a new team is formed, everyone has realistic expectations.  Those who have been in the sport for any amount of time know it takes time for members of the team to learn how to communicate and to make the driver comfortable in the car.  

 

Things seemed to get off to a good start for Newlin.  Despite an undesirable pill draw that handed him the 8th starting spot in the second heat, the Millerstown, PA native immediately bolted forward into 6th position on the opening lap.  He then began to challenge Justin Whittal for the final transfer position.  A couple slide job attempts to claim that 5th position didn’t stick and Newlin ultimately finished 6th, missing the transfer by one spot, but putting himself in good position to hopefully transfer through the B-main.

 

The top four finishers from the 8-lap B-main would fill out the starting field for the 25-lap feature.  Newlin started outside the front row but lost ground on the initial green flag when the rear end of his XXX Chassis got loose and left him sideways in front of the field.  He managed to regain the handle but not before losing a handful of spots.  The last chance race was too short and went without a caution, giving Zach no chance to recover and get back to a transfer spot.  He ended his night in 7th in the B-main but short of the end-result, there were certainly positives that came out of the first night together for the team.

 

Monday 9/6:  39 cars, Qualifying 6th in group, Heat 5th, B-main 3rd, A-main 6th

 

Pryde Motorsports and Zach Newlin returned to Port Royal Speedway Monday for the 70th Annual Labor Day Classic, ready to tackle the tricky daylight surface in the Del Grosso, Gio’s BBQ, Robert Lee Jr. Trucking, R&B Auto Proz, Quality Masonry, Grove Financial & Associates, Dillman Hauling, Ron’s RV Sales No.29.

 

The format for the 39 teams signed in for competition utilized a slightly different time trial approach, dividing the teams into five groups for hot laps and logging each car’s best lap time during the session as their qualifying time.  Newlin was part of a very experienced Group 2 but managed to log the 6th quickest time in the group.  

 

Teams remained in their groups for 8-lap heat races, from which the top six finishers transferred to the feature.  The heats were lined up “heads up” based on qualifying time, therefore putting Zach in the 6th starting spot in the second heat.  Like Saturday, Newlin got a good start and moved forward on the opening lap, this time claiming the 5th position.  He did everything he could to run down T.J. Stutts for the 4th spot but had to settle for 5th.

 

Newlin started Monday’s 12-lap B-main from outside the second row.  He settled into 4th early but claimed 3rd at the halfway point of the race with a daring move low in turn one on a restart.  Late in the race Zach was able to slip into 2nd briefly on two occasions.  On the first the caution flag flew before the lap was complete and on the second occasion, he lost the position to Jared Esh before the lap was scored.

 

In preparation for their 23rd starting spot in the 25-lap finale, the Pryde Motorsports team made adjustments to Newlin’s car to keep up with the ever-changing daytime surface.  During the opening laps, Newlin settled into 22nd and seemed to be stuck there.  However, as the feature event unfolded and took its usual toll on competitors, the changes certainly appeared to be the right ones.  Between laps six and thirteen, Newlin used a combination of green flag passes and help from attrition to find himself in 10th position.  

 

The track had started to take rubber, which means there is a groove that is highly advantageous because the surface is sticky.  If a driver misses that line, they lose spots.  Following a restart just beyond the halfway point, Newlin used excellent car control to stick to the low line around the speedway and pick off the competition one by one.  

 

With seven laps remaining, Newlin had captured the 6th spot and set his sights on a top five finish.  While he wasn’t able to reach that goal, his 23rd to 6th run (+17 spots) earned him the Hard Charger Award for the second consecutive Labor Day event at Port Royal Speedway.  In 2020, Newlin advanced 13 spots to claim the bonus prize.  

 

“I really want to thank Allen (Pryde) for the opportunity.  I’m thankful to get a second shot in the seat of a 410 sprint car“, Newlin shared.  “We had a little luck on our side Monday, but we weren’t too bad either.  He has nice equipment.  We just need laps to dial it in better“.

Austin Berry Suffers Mechanical Failure at Renninger Memorial

The Butch Renninger Memorial at Port Royal Speedway has grown into one of the speedway’s premier super late model events over its 18 year existence.  The event honors Renninger, who was a devoted member of the speedway and who’s number 33 competed there for many years.  Renninger compiled 41 career victories and three track titles during his years of competition at the Juniata County oval.

 

The 2021 edition of the race, which offered a tidy sum of $6,333 to the winner and a respectable purse throughout the field, drew a high quality field of 45 teams for competition Saturday night.  The ULMS-sanctioned event used the series’ two group qualifying format to set heat lineups.  Austin Berry was the 12th of 23 cars to hit the track in Group B and he registered a solid 20.805, placing him 9th quickest in the group.

 

Four 8-lap heat races were next on the agenda, with the top four finishers from each transferring directly to the 33-lap feature event.  Berry lined up 5th in heat number three.  The inside starting spot wasn’t the place to be on the dry, hard surface.  Austin slipped back a spot on the opening lap but regained his rhythm and recaptured 5th on lap two.  He was then able to move to the top of the speedway and build momentum.  He began to run down Jason Covert who held the 4th and final transfer spot but ran out of time in the non-stop event.

 

Missing the transfer via the heat put Berry on the pole of the second B-main and in solid position to transfer into the main event.  At the drop of the green Austin quickly jumped out front and up to the cushion.  By the time the field reached turn three, Berry held a four car length advantage and appeared poised to drive away with the victory and a spot in the finale.  

 

Seconds later disaster struck.  As Berry began to accelerate at the apex of turns three and four, the rear end of the Tire Mart, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, Addicted2DirtPR.com, Nathan Berry Beef Farm, A&C Racing Engines, JDS Racing, Ontime Body & Graphic, Swift Springs, Penske Racing Shocks, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, VP Racing Fuels, Rocket Chassis XR1 came apart.  Berry drifted high in turn four and onto the home stretch, with a trail of gear oil clearly visible behind him, signaling to his fellow competitors he was off the pace.  

 

It was an unfortunate end to a night that appeared it was getting better as it went.  Later, several teams that started in the back half of the field were able to drive forward in the feature and Berry felt his team was set to do the same if not for the mechanical failure.

 

 

“We weren’t great at the start of the night but we were good and we were getting better all night.  We kept working on it and I think we could’ve really moved forward tonight“, Berry commented.  “We don’t have a spare rear end at the shop, so it’s going to be a challenge to get this thing back to the track, especially with short week due to the holiday Monday and racing again Friday.  We’ll do our best though.  It’s been a good year and I’d like to wrap up our season here on a positive note“.

Austin and the team are aiming to return to Port Royal Speedway for the Night Before the 50 program on Friday, September 10th.  That is, assuming they are able to remedy the rear end issue and assuming Austin’s wife Chasity, who is expecting the couple’s second child very soon, isn’t race to the delivery room this week!  Stay tuned to the team’s social media for updates on both!

Capitol Renegade Team Inching Closer to Consistent Top-10’s

In three races in Central Pennsylvania last week, Kyle Reinhardt qualified for all three dashes, won two heats, and earned a starting spot no worse than 7th in the three feature events.  Sounds like an excellent week, doesn’t it?  Unfortunately, the story doesn’t end that way.

 

8/26:  Grandview Speedway – Bechtelsville, PA

      (26 cars, Qualifying 12th, Heat 1st,  Dash 5th, A-main 24th)

 

Thursday night, 26 teams made the trek to Eastern Pennsylvania to compete at the 1/3rd mile clay oval.  Reinhardt qualified mid-pack with a lap of 12.016, placing him 12th quick.  The single group qualifying format placed the All Star Rookie of the Year candidate on the pole for the 3rd heat.  

 

Reinhardt capitalized on the starting spot, holding the lead throughout the 8-lap contest, winning by 6-tenths of a second over Justin Peck and locking himself into the dash redraw.

 

The redraw wasn’t as friendly.  Reinhardt drew pill number five, giving him the inside row three starting spot.  Kyle was unable to gain any positions in the 6-lap dash but did hold onto 5th at the checkered flag.  

 

The real loss in the dash wasn’t positions, it was the motor.  It came up lame in the final lap, leaving the Capitol Renegade team a very small window of time to make repairs or swap motors, depending on the diagnosis.  The team quickly determined an engine change would be needed but there wasn’t sufficient time to do so, leaving the team with only one option to collect a paycheck for the night.  They would have to give up their 5th starting spot and elect to start at the rear of the field.  Reinhardt would take the green, then park the No.91 immediately to prevent further damage.

 

A solid night that looked primed to provide Reinhardt with a top-5 finish, instead left him watching from the sideline.

  

8/27:  Williams Grove Speedway – Mechanicsburg, PA

 

Unfortunately, Mother Nature claimed victory on the second night of the 4-race swing through PA.  Weather forced the legendary oval, Williams Grove Speedway, to cancel the annual Jack Gunn Memorial Twin 20’s program.  

 

8/28:  Lincoln Speedway – Abbottstown, PA

      (38 cars, Qualifying 4th in group D/20th overall, Heat 1st, Dash 4th, A-main 6th)

 

Following the night off due to rain, the All Star tour rolled into the Pigeon Hills of Pennsylvania for the Kramer Klash, in honor of the late Kramer Williamson.  The field was 38 teams strong in pursuit of the $7,300 winner’s share.

 

Kyle Reinhardt was the 31st overall to go under the clock for qualifying.  His 13.562 second lap was solid for the late slot and good enough for 4th in his group and the pole of the 4th heat.

 

For the second consecutive night, the Neptune City, NJ native did not waste the opportunity, grabbing the lead at the drop of the green.   Reinhardt never gave up the top spot, cruising to a convincing 1.7 second victory over Alan Krimes. 

 

Reinhardt had to be sensing deja vu.  First there was the pole and heat win just like Thursday, then yet again the dash redraw turned up the 5th starting spot in the first dash. This time he was able to make forward progress, grabbing the 4th spot and securing the 7th starting spot for the A-main in the process.

 

The 35-lap feature at the 3/8-mile high banked oval provided the stage for Reinhardt to play out the final act of a solid night.  He raced solidly inside the top 10 throughout the event, ultimately netting one spot and finishing 6th, completing his career-best overall night at Lincoln Speedway.

 

8/29:  BAPS Motor Speedway – Newberrytown, PA

      (32 cars, Qualifying 4th in group A/5th overall, Heat 2nd, Dash 4th, A-main 23rd)

 

The fourth and final night of the PA swing for the All Stars led the series to Lincoln Speedway, a 4-tenths mile oval in the heart of Posse country.  

 

The night started well for Reinhardt, drawing the number one slot for qualifying.  He promptly turned in the 5th quickest time overall and 4th fastest in his group, once again putting the Capitol Renegade No.91 on the heat race pole.

 

Despite a side by side battle through the first corner at the start, Reinhardt could not claim the top spot from Bill Balog, who used the cushion to build momentum.  The pair exited turn two and powered down the backstretch with Reinhardt nipping at Balog’s heels.  On lap 3, Lucas Wolfe worked his way past Reinhardt, claiming the runner up spot at the line.  Kyle was up to the challenge, crossing over and pulling a slider on Wolfe to retake the spot on the next lap.  From there, Reinhardt built up a cushion and rode home in 2nd.  

 

Reinhardt was locked into the dash redraw for the 3rd race in a row and this time his pick was a little better.  Rolling off from inside row 2 in the dash, Reinhardt was looking to earn a starting spot at the front of the field.  Things didn’t quite work out that way.  The setup was off a touch, and he slipped to a 4th place finish, once again slotting him in the 4th row for the A-main.

 

The Capitol Renegade team applied what they had learned from the 4-lap dash and rolled Reinhardt out for the 30-lap feature.  It was evident from the drop of the green that Reinhardt had something good to work with.  As he flashed under the flag stand to complete lap 1, he was already up to 5th position.  A split second later, contact from behind turned Reinhardt around and sent him sliding down across the front straightaway and into the inside barrier.  The impact damaged his J&J Auto Racing No.91 and ended the night for the Capitol Renegade team.  They were officially credited with a 23rd place finish.

 

“We had good speed all weekend, making 3-of-3 dashes, but we only have one finish to show for it.  I’m happy about our night at Lincoln.  That’s the best I’ve run there.  The other two nights were just things that were out of our control, so it’s frustrating.”, Reinhardt commented.  

 

He continued, “At Grandview we would have started 5th in the feature but we hurt the motor at the end of the dash and ran out of time to change it.  We had a great start to the night last night at BAPS.  Started 7th in the feature and was up to 5th on lap one but unfortunately got turned on the front stretch and it ended our night.  I have to thank my guys and Capitol Renegade for everything they do for me“.

 

Up Next:

 

There are ten races remaining in the All Star Circuit of Champions 2021 season.  The first two of those will take place this weekend, September 3rd-4th at Attica Raceway Park in Ohio.  Kyle and the Capitol Renegade team struggled at Attica earlier this season but have been consistently fast over the past six weeks.  They will carry that momentum into Attica to go after the $10,000 top prize in Saturday night’s finale, the “Attica Ambush”.
