When a new sprint car team takes shape in the late season in Central Pennsylvania, there is no easy path to getting laps and learning to work together to dial in the car for the new pilot.  They will face a lot of tough competition in what amounts to PA’s own version of the “month of money”.

 

Zach Newlin’s phone rang only weeks ago.  While there were still quite a few races remaining on the 2021 schedule in the area, most of them at this time of year are shows that include touring groups and large car counts.  That didn’t deter this new pairing from their agenda. 

 

Friday 9/10:  55 cars, Qualifying 7th in group, Heat 8th, C-main 13th

 

Newlin was one of a stout field of 55 to enter All Star Circuit of Champions competition at Port Royal Speedway for The Night Before the 50.  A qualifying lap of 16.399 placed him 7th quickest of the 11 drivers in group A.  

 

The Millerstown, PA native started 7th and held a firm grasp on the spot in the first heat race for the first six laps, but was challenged by Tyler Reeser as the 8-lap heat drew to a close.  The top four finishers would move on to the A-main, while 5-7 would go to the B-main and 8-11 to the C-main.  Newlin ultimately finished 8th, costing him a spot in the B-main.

 

The 10-lap C-main started off well for Newlin.  From his 4th starting spot, he surged forward on the opening lap, claiming the 3rd position.  Only the top two finishers would move on to the B-main, so Zach would need to lasso one more spot to advance.  

 

The red lights flashed on and All Star officials called the red flag over the one way radios as the field as about to complete lap one.  Unfortunately, as Newlin slowed near the start/finish line, Danny Dietrich did not.  He collided with the right rear of Newlin’s No.29.  The impact damaged the headers and destroyed the tire, top wing, nerf bar and W-link, ending the night for the Pryde Motorsports team.  They were officially credited with a 13th place finish. 

 

Saturday 9/11:  57 cars, Qualifying 21st, Heat 7th, C-main 3rd, Non-Qualifiers Race 

 

A little elbow grease and sweat late Friday night and Saturday afternoon had the Del Grosso, Gio’s BBQ, Robert Lee Jr. Trucking, R&B Auto Proz, Quality Masonry, Grove Financial & Associates, Dillman Hauling, Ron’s RV Sales No.29 ready for action again.  The team returned to Port Royal Speedway Saturday night for the 54th Annual Tuscarora 50.

 

The hefty purse offering $54,000 to win and $1,500 to start drew 57 teams to the Juniata County half-mile oval for the early September tradition that leverages its own unique format.  

 

The field was divided into two flights for qualifying.  Within each flight, the field would then be divided into three heat races based on lap times.  A 4-car invert meant the fastest car in each heat started 4th, while the 4th fastest qualifier started on the pole.  The remainder of the field lined up by qualifying time behind those four.  Only the top three finishers would advance to the A-main, while 4th-6th would move to the B-main and everyone from 7th back would go to the C-main.

 

Zach Newlin registered the 21st fastest lap of 29 cars in Flight A, which placed him 7th in the starting lineup for the third heat.  Once again, Newlin got a strong start and grabbed the 6th position away from Hunter Schuerenberg.  A couple laps later, the No.55 of Schuerenberg battled back and reclaimed the spot.  Newlin worked hard to run down the All Star regular for the final spot in the B-main but was unsuccessful and finished 7th.

 

The C-main resulted in yet another case of one spot short.  After starting 5th officially, Newlin took the green in 4th when the polesitter couldn’t make the call.  It took three attempts to get the race started.  When it did finally get rolling, Zach was able to take 3rd over Lucas Wolfe and pull away by a few car lengths.  Newlin went on to finish 3rd, just missing the transfer to the B-main.

 

The night wasn’t quite over for Newlin.  Port Royal Speedway runs a non-qualifiers race at the end of the program, including a nice payout, to give those teams a chance to make something for their efforts.  Zach lined up 8th for the 20-lap event and held the 7th position until the halfway point.  He slipped a couple spots late in the race and eventually finished 9th. 

 

The weekend results won’t grab any headlines for Newlin, but there were small victories and several positives to carry forward.  He and the team were there to learn and to build, and they accomplished that.

Zach Newlin and Pryde Motorsports have not determined what’s next on their schedule, but the pairing does plan to race together more in 2021.

Zach Newlin Repeats as Hard Charger at Port’s Labor Day Classic

Late in the 2020 season, Zach Newlin got his long-awaited first shot in a 410 sprint car.  He was able to get a dozen or so races under his belt during that opportunity.  It was long enough though that he knew for certain he was hooked.  Open seats are not plentiful by any stretch of the imagination in the top winged division.  “Zach Daddy”, as he is known by his fan base, was patiently planning, hoping, and waiting for his next opportunity.

 

Enter Allen Pryde.  He was the man with an open seat who dialed Zach’s number a few weeks ago with the idea they should run a few races together to finish out the 2021 season.  Newlin agreed to the deal, which included his brother and long-time crew chief Lance Newlin to help with the car.  

 

Saturday 9/4:  31 cars, Heat 6th, B-main 7th

 

The new combination decided to kick off their venture at Port Royal Speedway’s Saturday night Juniata County Fair opener.  The $5,000 to win show for 410 sprint cars drew a healthy field of 31 teams, which were divided into four 8-lap heats lined up by a random pill draw.  The top five finishers from each would transfer to the A-main, with the top 3 handicapped to shape the first six rows of the starting lineup.

 

When a new team is formed, everyone has realistic expectations.  Those who have been in the sport for any amount of time know it takes time for members of the team to learn how to communicate and to make the driver comfortable in the car.  

 

Things seemed to get off to a good start for Newlin.  Despite an undesirable pill draw that handed him the 8th starting spot in the second heat, the Millerstown, PA native immediately bolted forward into 6th position on the opening lap.  He then began to challenge Justin Whittal for the final transfer position.  A couple slide job attempts to claim that 5th position didn’t stick and Newlin ultimately finished 6th, missing the transfer by one spot, but putting himself in good position to hopefully transfer through the B-main.

 

The top four finishers from the 8-lap B-main would fill out the starting field for the 25-lap feature.  Newlin started outside the front row but lost ground on the initial green flag when the rear end of his XXX Chassis got loose and left him sideways in front of the field.  He managed to regain the handle but not before losing a handful of spots.  The last chance race was too short and went without a caution, giving Zach no chance to recover and get back to a transfer spot.  He ended his night in 7th in the B-main but short of the end-result, there were certainly positives that came out of the first night together for the team.

 

Monday 9/6:  39 cars, Qualifying 6th in group, Heat 5th, B-main 3rd, A-main 6th

 

Pryde Motorsports and Zach Newlin returned to Port Royal Speedway Monday for the 70th Annual Labor Day Classic, ready to tackle the tricky daylight surface in the Del Grosso, Gio’s BBQ, Robert Lee Jr. Trucking, R&B Auto Proz, Quality Masonry, Grove Financial & Associates, Dillman Hauling, Ron’s RV Sales No.29.

 

The format for the 39 teams signed in for competition utilized a slightly different time trial approach, dividing the teams into five groups for hot laps and logging each car’s best lap time during the session as their qualifying time.  Newlin was part of a very experienced Group 2 but managed to log the 6th quickest time in the group.  

 

Teams remained in their groups for 8-lap heat races, from which the top six finishers transferred to the feature.  The heats were lined up “heads up” based on qualifying time, therefore putting Zach in the 6th starting spot in the second heat.  Like Saturday, Newlin got a good start and moved forward on the opening lap, this time claiming the 5th position.  He did everything he could to run down T.J. Stutts for the 4th spot but had to settle for 5th.

 

Newlin started Monday’s 12-lap B-main from outside the second row.  He settled into 4th early but claimed 3rd at the halfway point of the race with a daring move low in turn one on a restart.  Late in the race Zach was able to slip into 2nd briefly on two occasions.  On the first the caution flag flew before the lap was complete and on the second occasion, he lost the position to Jared Esh before the lap was scored.

 

In preparation for their 23rd starting spot in the 25-lap finale, the Pryde Motorsports team made adjustments to Newlin’s car to keep up with the ever-changing daytime surface.  During the opening laps, Newlin settled into 22nd and seemed to be stuck there.  However, as the feature event unfolded and took its usual toll on competitors, the changes certainly appeared to be the right ones.  Between laps six and thirteen, Newlin used a combination of green flag passes and help from attrition to find himself in 10th position.  

 

The track had started to take rubber, which means there is a groove that is highly advantageous because the surface is sticky.  If a driver misses that line, they lose spots.  Following a restart just beyond the halfway point, Newlin used excellent car control to stick to the low line around the speedway and pick off the competition one by one.  

 

With seven laps remaining, Newlin had captured the 6th spot and set his sights on a top five finish.  While he wasn’t able to reach that goal, his 23rd to 6th run (+17 spots) earned him the Hard Charger Award for the second consecutive Labor Day event at Port Royal Speedway.  In 2020, Newlin advanced 13 spots to claim the bonus prize.  

 

“I really want to thank Allen (Pryde) for the opportunity.  I’m thankful to get a second shot in the seat of a 410 sprint car“, Newlin shared.  “We had a little luck on our side Monday, but we weren’t too bad either.  He has nice equipment.  We just need laps to dial it in better“.

Zach and the Pryde Motorsports team plan to return to Port Royal Speedway for the Night Before the 50 on Friday and the Tuscarora 50 on Saturday.

Newlin’s Season Still Plagued by Gremlins

Whatever joke the universe is playing on Zach Newlin’s 2021 season, the gig is up.  You can stop now.  It’s not funny.  

 

Newlin has had a lot of success in his 20-plus year racing career.  2021 may be the most challenging he has ever been through.

After losing their second motor in as many outings at Williams Grove Speedway back on July 16th, Zach Newlin and the Mansberger Motorsports team were back at the legendary Central Pennsylvania oval on July 30th with an emergency reserve bullet under the hood.  

 

The rest of Friday night’s story is unfortunately short.  During hot laps, Newlin experienced a severe vibration in the 21m.  The vibration was significant enough they would not be able to compete safely.  The team went to work trying to diagnose the problem, but had little success.  They missed their heat race as they continued to pursue the root cause.  Since a car must take the green flag in the A-main to collect any prize money, Newlin and Mansberger made the decision to take the green from their 19th starting position, then pull in immediately as a safety precaution. 

 

With no 358 sprint car racing at Williams Grove Speedway scheduled in August, Newlin and the Mansberger Motorsports team will sit out until the division returns on September 3rd.  They will use the time to regroup, reset their motor program, and go over their equipment thoroughly to resolve the vibration issue.

 

There are a few races remaining and this team wants nothing more than to finish strong.  They know their podium finish and top-10 early in the year were no fluke.  Entering the off-season with positive vibes and starting to build momentum for 2022 are essential right now.

Can’t Shake the Monkey Off Their Back

A flat tire, Mother Nature, and an engine failure.  Those are the answers to a riddle nobody’s laughing at.

 

The question was, “What three things have made Zach Newlin 0-3 at Williams Grove Speedway since he scored a podium finish there on April 23rd?”.  Every racer goes through stretches like that.  The good news is, they can’t last forever.  Right?

 

Friday night, July 16th, Newlin and the Mansberger Motorsports team were among 22 HJ Towing and Recovery 358 sprint cars entered to compete in the Summer Series event at Williams Grove Speedway.  The team came ready with a new bullet under the hood, determined to return to running at the front of the field as they had done earlier in the season.

 

Three 8-lap heats were lined up using a random pill draw, which put Newlin in the 6th starting spot in the third heat.  All cars would qualify for the feature event, with the top four going to the redraw for the top twelve starting spots.

 

Newlin was good from the drop of the green in his heat race, quickly surging forward into a redraw spot, then methodically navigating his way toward the front.  Coming off turn four to take the white flag, just as Zach Daddy made his move into 2nd place, the monkey on the back of Newlin and the 21m team woke up again.  The motor suddenly let go in a big puff of smoke and the fluids poured out all over the Williams Grove clay as the car rolled to a stop at the turn one end of the front stretch.

 

0-4.

 

The 358 sprint cars will be back at “The Grove” on July 30th.  Newlin and Mansberger hope to be among them, but that will depend on how their motor situation unfolds in the coming week.

 

One thing is certain.  When they can eventually ditch that monkey, everyone is going to have to contend with the Newlin/Mansberger combination.

Zach Newlin and Burke Motorsports Part Ways

Zach Newlin and the Burke Motorsports 410 sprint car team have decided to part ways effective this week.  Sometimes teams stay together for years, but more often, changes are needed to get the right combination for success.  This is just one of those cases.

 

The pairing had been competing on a part time basis in Central Pennsylvania since they joined forces in late August 2020.  They entered 14 events together, with the majority being against touring series competition.  Although both had raced with success for many years at other levels, the opportunity was the first venture into 410 sprint cars for both Newlin and Burke Motorsports.    

 

In the seat time he had, Newlin showed signs of his ability to adapt to the powerful machines, such as garnering the Hard Charger Award at Port Royal Speedway’s Labor Day Classic and making veteran-like moves at Williams Grove Speedway that caught the attention of Johnny Gibson, the long-time voice of the World of Outlaws, during a broadcast.

 

Newlin, who captured a win at Williams Grove last year in his first 358 sprint car season and also has quite a resume of accomplishments in 305 sprint cars in the past decade, will continue to pursue a 410 sprint car opportunity, but for now will focus his efforts on 358 sprint car competition with Mansberger Motorsports.

 

“I’m eager to get back in a 410 and show what I can do.  I learned a lot in my first opportunity and I know I can get the job done“, Newlin shared.

Newlin’s Night Cut Short at The Grove

Sometimes things don’t go your way and there’s nothing you can do about it.  Zach Newlin certainly can testify to that lately.  His last opportunity at Williams Grove Speedway was taken away by Mother Nature and the chance before that ended prematurely with a flat tire after starting inside the top 10.  When he returned to the legendary oval last week, he was just looking to have some fun and log a top five finish like he knew the team was capable of.  

 

Twenty HJ Towing and Recovery 358 sprint cars signed in to compete at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, June 26th.  Two 8-lap heats were lined up using a handicapping system based on the season point standings, which put Newlin in the 6th starting spot in the first heat.  

 

The wheelman from Millerstown, PA realized quickly at the drop of the green that he had a good car under him.  He was able to move forward right out of the gate, and the car was balanced and comfortable.  Halfway through the race, as he moved into 3rd, the engine blew and abruptly brought an end to Newlin’s night.

 

The feature lineup was to be ‘heads-up’ based on the heat finishes, therefore until the failure, Newlin was likely in line for a 6th starting spot and a solid shot at the top five finish he wanted out of the night, but once again something beyond his control intervened.  

 

In July, Zach Daddy and the Mansberger Motorsports team will compete in two 358 sprint car events at Williams Grove Speedway.  You can bet they will be determined to not let that monkey get too comfortable on their back.  The pair of Summer Series points races are scheduled for July 16th and July 30th.

This Friday night, June 25th, Zach Newlin will climb aboard the Mansberger Motorsports No.21m 358 Sprint Car at Williams Grove Speedway.  Newlin is anxious to get back to the legendary oval.  Due to a rainout earlier this month, it has been one month since his last opportunity to chase a checkered flag at ‘The Grove’.

 

After a rainout Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway that prevented Newlin from strapping into the Burke Motorsports 410 sprint car, Newlin Racing decided to break out their familiar 11z for the first time this season on Sunday.  The goal was simple:  seat time for Zach Daddy.  With their trusty 358 engine under the hood, they made the tow to Path Valley Speedway to enter the first 410 sprint car race held at the track in several years.  The bullring levels the playing field a bit and is suitable for smaller engines to compete against the bigger engines.  “The night didn’t go as well as hoped, but it was good to get the family team back together for a night.  We need to get that motor refreshed before we can think about running anywhere else really“, Newlin explained.  

 

Looking ahead to July, Williams Grove Speedway has the 358 sprint cars on the schedule twice.  Scheduled for July 16th and July 30th, the events are Summer Series points races for the division.  The Newlin/Mansberger duo plans to compete in both races and attempt to move into the top 5 in the season point standings.  Newlin currently sits 7th after 3 races.

Newlin Headed Back to Williams Grove Friday for 358 Summer Series

With no 358 sprint car racing on his schedule over the past weekend, there was only one race on the docket for Zach Newlin.  He strapped into the Burke Motorsports/Grove Financial & Associates/Dillman Hauling, LLC. 410 sprint car at Port Royal Speedway on Saturday night.  

 

The night looked to be off to a promising start when Newlin registered the 5th quickest lap among the field of 19 cars during hot laps.  Given the challenges the team has faced as they figure out what their new Maxim wants, it was an encouraging sign.  Unfortunately, the optimism didn’t last.


An unlucky pill draw had Newlin starting in the back of the 2nd heat and he was unable to move forward in his 10-lap qualifying event.  Despite everyone’s best efforts, things didn’t improve for the feature.  After a handful of laps, the team made the decision to bring the No.54 in and save their resources for another night.  It’s been a tough start to the 410 season for this group.  All teams encounter struggles like this at some point and they will find their way through it.  

 

Next up, Newlin will climb aboard the Mansberger Motorsports No.21m again on June 11th for a 358 Sprint Car Summer Series race at Williams Grove Speedway, where he sits 7th in the season points.  That will be followed (tentatively) by another outing at Port Royal Speedway in the Burke Motorsports No.54 on June 12th.  Follow the social media outlets listed below for news and updates!

Zach Newlin Gaining 410 Experience Against Tough Competition

Despite 20 years of karting, 305 sprints and 358 sprints, Zach Newlin was only 12 races into his 410 sprint car career when he walked into the pit area on Monday for the rain-delayed Weikert Memorial at Port Royal Speedway.  Another race means more experience.  He’s not gaining it the easy way either.  Half of those previous events were against the All Stars or the World of Outlaws.

 

The $29,000 to win All Star Circuit of Champions sanctioned event at ‘The Speed Palace’ on Memorial Day would serve as Newlin’s 13th career 410 start, and yet again it would be against the All Stars.     

 

In his laps against the clock in the Burke Motorsports/Grove Financial & Associates/Dillman Hauling, LLC. No.54, Zach Daddy was able to record a very respectable lap, timing 26th quickest out of the 43 cars that attempted qualifying.  The effort provided him with a starting spot on the front row of the second heat race.  Since the format for the special event uses a system that awards drivers points during qualifying and heat races, his only objective was to stay up front, or very close to it.  Points awarded in the heat races are based on where you start vs. where you finish, commonly known in the sport as ‘passing points’.  Early in his heat race, Newlin was holding his own, running in the top 3 against stout competition.  As the race progressed, he slipped a few more spots, ultimately finishing 9th and capturing far fewer points than he was aiming for.  

 

“My lack of experience in a 410 cost me there.  A few of those spots are on me“, Newlin admitted.  With no time to dwell on it, he tucked the lessons learned away and prepared for the B-main.  Only the top four finishers would transfer to the A-main.  Newlin knew his 13th starting spot in the last chance qualifying race would be tough to overcome but laps are laps.  Seat time is seat time.  It’s an opportunity to learn.  He managed to work his way forward as far as 9th for a handful of laps, then eventually settled for a 10th place finish in the 20-car field.  It wasn’t good enough to make the A-main but it was progress for the team in only their second outing of the 2021 season.

Newlin Battles Through Tough Sprint Car Weekend

Wheelman Determined to Rebound as Busy Summer Kicks Off in Pennsylvania

As is often the case during the 2021 racing season, Zach Newlin kicked off this past weekend by strapping into the Mansberger Motorsports No.21m 358 sprint car at Williams Grove Speedway.  This weekend was going to be a little different though, as he was also scheduled to make his 410 sprint car season debut the following night at Port Royal Speedway.  Unfortunately for Newlin, the weekend was going to be anything but typical for the wheelman who has established a track record of success.

 

Friday night, May 21st started off pretty normal with 21 358 sprint car teams signed in at Williams Grove Speedway, which meant the usual three 8-lap heats from which all cars would qualify for the night’s A-main but only the top 4 finishers would make the redraw.  

 

Zach started 5th in the second heat and was able to miraculously miss a hard 2-car crash in turn one on the start, somehow squeaking between the crash and the outside guardrail to avoid contact.  On the ensuing restart, Newlin made a strong move into the third position in turn 3.  He would go on to ride home in third to lock himself into the redraw.  

 

That part of the night seemed pretty normal.  The redraw results placed Newlin in the 8th starting spot for the 20-lap feature.  From the drop of the green, Newlin sensed the handling was off in the Mansberger Motorsports 21m.  On lap 8, things went from bad to worse and it became apparent the issue was with the right rear tire.  The tire went completely flat, forcing Newlin to the pits.  He was unable to return.  The team determined the cause of the tire failure was a bit unusual.  The tire was not cut or punctured; the valve stem had failed.  These types of things are just part of the sport, but it certainly wasn’t the norm for Newlin to end the night early in the pits.  He was credited with an 18th place finish.

 

Next up for Mansberger Motorsports will be the 358 Sprint Car Summer Series event on June 11th at Williams Grove Speedway.

 

All Zach Daddy could do was accept Friday night’s results and move on to Saturday at Port Royal.  After a couple prior unsuccessful attempts to kick off their season, Burke Motorsports was finally able to roll their beautiful orange and blue No.54 Grove Financial & Associates, Dillman Hauling, LLC., Heather Sims Realtor, T&M Homebuilders, Kirby Kitner Excavating, Walker Performance Filtration, Sander Engineering, DMI, out of the trailer to go racing in 2021.  Earlier in May, weather and a family situation had thwarted two prior attempts to race.

 

Zach and the team would need to jump right into the deep end of the pool with their brand new Maxim Chassis.  The format called for time trials, which meant there would be no chance to shake down the new car, other than the few circuits he would get in hot laps.

 

For those who aren’t familiar, even if they are from the same manufacturer, no two frames behave the same.  Each one has its own personality and the team must learn what it wants to get the most speed out of it.  

 

When he signed in for the night, Newlin had some luck at the pill draw.  He drew the lowest pill, giving him the first shot at the track for qualifying.  Time trials quickly provided feedback on the new car, indicating it was not at its best using a familiar setup they had used in the past on other cars.  They were at the bottom of the charts and had work to do.

 

The 24 cars on hand then participated in three 8-lap heat races, which were lined up based on their times in qualifying, with the quickest times up front.  Despite making numerous, significant changes to the car prior to their heat race, Zach was unable to move forward from his 9th starting spot in the heat race.  Upon his return to the pits, the team went back to work again.  They discovered an issue in the rear suspension and were able to resolve it before the feature.

 

Given their 24th starting position, the team’s plan in the A-main was to assess the car 5 laps into the event.  If Newlin was able to pass cars and move forward, he would continue to race, but if not, they would call it a night and save their resources for another night.  While the issue they resolved prior to the feature was definitely a big step in the right direction, the car was still not where it needed to be, so he called it a night 5 laps into the race, resulting in an official 24th place finish.

 

Having lost a couple opportunities earlier in May to begin to learn what this new car wants to make it fast, Newlin and the Burke Motorsports team will need a couple more nights to start to figure out their new piece.  Even the majority of this particular night was spent resolving a suspension issue, which means they don’t really yet know if the changes they made earlier in the evening would have worked had that issue not existed.

 

That’s how this sport is.  Three steps forward, two steps backwards.  As a team, you can’t lose sight of the fact that the net result is forward progress.  Fans want and expect quick success but it takes time for a team and a driver to make a car fast, especially when each has only a dozen 410 sprint car starts on their resume.  Both Newlin and Burke Motorsports have been very successful in their past racing endeavors.  In time, they will find success in a 410 as well.
