Newlin’s Night Cut Short at The Grove

Engine Failure Thwarts Promising Night

Sometimes things don’t go your way and there’s nothing you can do about it.  Zach Newlin certainly can testify to that lately.  His last opportunity at Williams Grove Speedway was taken away by Mother Nature and the chance before that ended prematurely with a flat tire after starting inside the top 10.  When he returned to the legendary oval last week, he was just looking to have some fun and log a top five finish like he knew the team was capable of.  

 

Twenty HJ Towing and Recovery 358 sprint cars signed in to compete at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, June 26th.  Two 8-lap heats were lined up using a handicapping system based on the season point standings, which put Newlin in the 6th starting spot in the first heat.  

 

The wheelman from Millerstown, PA realized quickly at the drop of the green that he had a good car under him.  He was able to move forward right out of the gate, and the car was balanced and comfortable.  Halfway through the race, as he moved into 3rd, the engine blew and abruptly brought an end to Newlin’s night.

 

The feature lineup was to be ‘heads-up’ based on the heat finishes, therefore until the failure, Newlin was likely in line for a 6th starting spot and a solid shot at the top five finish he wanted out of the night, but once again something beyond his control intervened.  

 

In July, Zach Daddy and the Mansberger Motorsports team will compete in two 358 sprint car events at Williams Grove Speedway.  You can bet they will be determined to not let that monkey get too comfortable on their back.  The pair of Summer Series points races are scheduled for July 16th and July 30th.

Zach Newlin Focusing on Seat Time

Working Hard to Establish a Rhythm Among Opportunities

This Friday night, June 25th, Zach Newlin will climb aboard the Mansberger Motorsports No.21m 358 Sprint Car at Williams Grove Speedway.  Newlin is anxious to get back to the legendary oval.  Due to a rainout earlier this month, it has been one month since his last opportunity to chase a checkered flag at ‘The Grove’.

 

After a rainout Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway that prevented Newlin from strapping into the Burke Motorsports 410 sprint car, Newlin Racing decided to break out their familiar 11z for the first time this season on Sunday.  The goal was simple:  seat time for Zach Daddy.  With their trusty 358 engine under the hood, they made the tow to Path Valley Speedway to enter the first 410 sprint car race held at the track in several years.  The bullring levels the playing field a bit and is suitable for smaller engines to compete against the bigger engines.  “The night didn’t go as well as hoped, but it was good to get the family team back together for a night.  We need to get that motor refreshed before we can think about running anywhere else really“, Newlin explained.  

 

Looking ahead to July, Williams Grove Speedway has the 358 sprint cars on the schedule twice.  Scheduled for July 16th and July 30th, the events are Summer Series points races for the division.  The Newlin/Mansberger duo plans to compete in both races and attempt to move into the top 5 in the season point standings.  Newlin currently sits 7th after 3 races.

Reinhardt Finds Speed Again During Ohio Speedweek Stretch Run

Closes First Half of Rookie ASCoC Season with Momentum

Following a difficult start to the All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek, Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade, Champion Racing Oil, Henry’s Wrecker Service team used the week’s only off day on June 13th to regroup and refocus.

 

Those words are used often in the sport, but what do people really mean when they use those terms?  Often people are referring to problem solving, hard work, and attention to detail relating to the car.  Sometimes the time is spent improving team communications and preparation.  It takes all those things to succeed.

 

The off day was clearly well used by Reinhardt and his team.  Their results the following two nights showed improvement, winning a heat race, making a dash, and qualifying for both main events.  The key would be to sustain that improvement and continue that trend through the rest of the week and beyond.  

 

6/16:  Waynesfield Raceway Park – Waynesfield, OH

      (Qualifying 9th overall / 2nd in group, Heat 3rd,  A-main 19th)

 

Round five of Ohio Sprint Speedweek brought 42 teams to Waynesfield Raceway Park to take a shot at the $6,000 winner’s share.  Kyle Reinhardt was the first to go under the clock in Group C for qualifying (19th overall).  He registered the 2nd quickest lap in his group and 9th best overall, a good start to the night in Western Ohio.   

 

After running second for most of the third heat race, Reinhardt ultimately finished 3rd, qualifying for the A-main but missing the dash.  Cale Thomas won the heat race and Tyler Courtney, the group’s fastest qualifier, finished just ahead of Reinhardt, claiming the two available tickets to the dash. 

 

Reinhardt started 16th in the A-main and worked his way to 14th by lap 10, but would fade slightly a few laps later.  He settled into 18th for the middle portion of the race and ultimately crossed the line 19th at the conclusion of the 35-lap event.  

 

We were decent early but just missed it at the end of the night.  We took a shot at it but it wasn’t quite what we needed.  We learn from it and move on down the road“, Reinhardt shared.

 

6/17:  Muskingum County Speedway – Dresden, OH

      (Qualifying 8th overall / 4th in group, Heat 1st,  Dash 5th, A-main 12th)

 

Move on down the road is exactly what they did, along with 38 other teams.  About two hours southeast to be exact to Muskingum County Speedway for round six of Speedweek.

 

Once again drawing a pill that placed him in Group C, Reinhardt logged the 8th quickest time overall, 4th quickest in his group.  The effort put him on the pole of the second heat.  The Capitol Renegade, Champion Racing Oil, Henry’s Wrecker Service No.91 looked strong, pulling out to a lead that wasn’t challenged throughout the 8-lap race.  The Neptune City, NJ native claimed the win over Cory Eliason by two seconds, earning a spot in the dash redraw for the night.  

 

“We’ve qualified for two shows via our heat race, we’ve been in two B-mains and now we’ve made two dashes, so we’ve about covered it all this week!”, Reinhardt joked as he described the teams Speedweek experience thus far to series announcer, Blake Anderson, prior to making his pick.  An unlucky draw put Reinhardt in the 5th starting spot of dash number two.  It was tough to advance in the short, 4-lap event, which meant he would start the night’s A-main from outside row five in the 10th position.

 

It took several attempts to get the 25-lap feature event started successfully and complete a lap under green flag conditions.  The initial attempts produced spinning cars and caution flags.  The third attempt wasn’t much different and unfortunately for Reinhardt he was in the wrong place at the wrong time on the high side of turn one when Paul McMahon got sideways.  Running 9th at the time, he was able to narrowly avoid McMahon but then found Cory Eliason on his side directly in his path.  Reinhardt came to a stop with some minor front end damage.  Members of several teams pitched in to help the Capitol Renegade crew make repairs in the work area so the No.91 could rejoin the field.

 

Reinhardt restarted 23rd after the incident and went right to work when the race resumed.  He methodically worked his way forward, dicing through traffic while dealing with poor visibility due to the dry and dusty racing surface.  Over the final half dozen laps, Reinhardt’s car was the fastest machine on the track as he surged forward, wheeling his J&J Chassis wherever he wanted to put it to make passes.  His comeback came to a close with a 12th place finish, a solid recovery for the hand he had been dealt with the opening lap incident.

 

We were rolling!  The car was really, really good.  Bob and Robbie gave me a great car tonight.  It’s unfortunate what happened at the start.  I think we were a top-5 car, maybe even a podium, if that had not happened.“, an energized Reinhardt said after the race.  “I’ve never been here to Muskingum before.  This is a fun track to race!“, he said.

 

6/18:  Limaland Motorsports Park – Lima, OH  (rained out)

 

Mother Nature claimed her one and only victim of the entire Ohio Speedweek on Friday when persistent rains and a bleak forecast forced the cancelation of the scheduled event at the 3-tenths mile oval.

 

6/19:  Portsmouth Raceway Park – Portsmouth, OH

      (Qualifying 13th overall / 3rd in group, Heat 1st,  Dash 1st, A-main 20th)

 

Following the unplanned night off, 37 teams rolled into Portsmouth Raceway Park in southern Ohio for the Speedweek finale, the Dean Knittle Memorial, which would pay $17,554 to the victor.

 

Once again, Reinhardt’s qualifying effort  was good, logging the 3rd best time in his group and 13th overall.  Making the most of the front row starting spot the time trial run provided, Reinhardt flexed his muscle a little, winning the heat race over Zeb Wise by 2.6 seconds and earning a spot in the dash redraw for the second consecutive night.

 

In the dash redraw, Reinhardt once again gave himself a front row starting spot, this time next to Rico Abreu.  On the initial start, Abreu executed a slide job in turn one, but Reinhardt crossed over and drove back under the No.24 of Abreu.  Rico pulled even with Kyle in turn three but Reinhardt kept his foot to the floor and powered back around Abreu on the high side to take the lead for good.  With that, Reinhardt had given himself his third front row starting spot of the night, and this time it would be for the top prize in the 30-lap A-main.

 

Once again, Reinhardt showed his strength by powering around the high side of the 3/8th mile oval, building momentum until he was close enough to strike with a slide job on leader Danny Dietrich in turn three.  Reinhardt powered to the lead off turn four and would settle into the top spot for the first six laps.

 

Zeb Wise and Tyler Courtney were breathing down Reinhardt’s neck the entire time, and eventually each took their shot at the front of the field as well.  The trio sliced and diced, running within inches of each other for several laps that had fans on their feet and holding their breath.

 

The caution lights flashed on with 19 laps remaining.  On the ensuing restart, Reinhardt generated a huge run off turn two and down the backstretch.  As he was about to overtake the No.10 of Zeb Wise, Reinhardt brushed the outside wall and deflected into Wise, causing the pair to crash.  

 

Reinhard was able to rejoin the field and restart 16th after some quick repairs, however three laps later, with 15 to go, he came to a stop in turn four with his right rear tire going down.  All Star rules do not provide for any guaranteed time in the work area once the race reaches the halfway point, so the flat tire brought an end to the night for the Capitol Renegade No.91.

 

Racing hard and clipped the wall and it sent me down the track into Zeb.  I feel terrible for him, his crew, and my guys.  We spoke after the accident and the most important thing is that he is ok“, Reinhardt tweeted at the end of the night regarding the crash.

 

After wrapping up his first career Ohio Speedweek, Reinhardt summarized the team’s week.  “We definitely improved all week long.  We won our last two heat races, we made 3 dashes in our last 5 races, and we led some laps in the A-main, so we feel really confident about our improvements and direction“,  Reinhardt commented.  “Unfortunately, we don’t have the feature finishes to show how much better we were, but we definitely made gains on the dry-slick surfaces that were giving us so much trouble.

 

Bob and I are gelling more with time.  We’ve only been racing together for a few months, so that’s just part of it.  We’ve been racing a lot the past month.  That has helped.  We’re getting on the same page“, Reinhardt explained while discussing his new crew chief.

 

Having already garnered one victory in Reinhardt’s rookie campaign on the All Star tour, the team sits 9th in the point standings at the halfway point of the season with 4 heat wins and 2 dash wins.  Given the team accomplished those things while working through their struggles, the recent improvements should make for an exciting and competitive second half of the season for Reinhardt aboard the Capitol Renegade No.91.

All Star Circuit of Champions’ teams get a well-deserved break following the grueling Ohio Sprint Speedweek.  Series action will resume on July 9th at Stateline Speedway in Busti, NY, followed by the 2-day Lou Blaney Memorial event at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, OH on July 10th-11th.

 

In the meantime, Reinhardt and team will participate in at least a portion of Pennsylvania Speedweek to remain sharp and continue their momentum. While the Capitol Renegade team plans to keep some of their primary equipment fresh, they will run the first three races of the PA series at Williams Grove Speedway, Lincoln Speedway and BAPS Motor Speedway June 25-27, then make a decision regarding the remaining events in the 10-day, 10-race summer tradition in PA.

Kyle Reinhardt’s First Half of Ohio Speedweek a Story of Struggles and Progress

Ohio Providing Ample Opportunities to Build Slick Track Notebook

It’s no secret that the arch-nemesis for Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team thus far on their rookie All Star Circuit of Champions campaign has been slick tracks.  They have had good nights and bad, but finding consistency has been challenging.  There was no doubt Ohio Sprint Speedweek would provide plenty of opportunities to learn and improve in that area.

 

6/11:  Attica Raceway Park – Attica, OH

      (Qualifying 15th overall / 3rd in group, Heat 5th,  B-main 11th)

 

Night one of Ohio Speedweek saw 45 teams sign in at Attica Raceway Park.  For Reinhardt and team, their start to the night seemed to provide reason for some optimism.  Kyle registered the 15th quickest time overall, good enough for 3rd in his group and the pole in his heat race.  Reinhardt’s timed laps were during the first group, so the real measuring stick would come as the night wore on.  

 

Unfortunately the struggles continued.  Reinhardt slipped backwards from his pole position in the heat, finishing 5th and missing the transfer to the A-main.  In the B-main, from which four cars would transfer, Reinhardt started 4th but could not hold serve and slipped back to an 11th place finish, ending his night.

 

6/12:  Fremont Speedway – Fremont, OH

      (Qualifying 13th overall / 8th in group, Heat 7th,  B-main 12th)

 

The series rolled into Fremont Speedway for night two of Speedweek with 44 teams in tow.  Once again Reinhardt took his turn under the clock as part of the first group, but he did not fare well, timing 8th quickest in his group and landing deep in the starting lineup for his heat race.  Reinhardt and team were unable to recover, finishing 7th in the heat race and 12th in the B-main.

 

We’re just struggling to figure out what the car wants in these conditions.  On the bright side, when you try things and they don’t work, you learn.  We’ve just got to keep working hard to solve it“, the Neptune City, NJ native shared.

 

6/14:  Wayne County Speedway – Orrville, OH

      (Qualifying 14th overall / 4th in group, Heat 1st,  Dash 4th, A-main 12th)

 

Following a day off to regroup, Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team were among 49 cars to roll into Wayne County Speedway for night three of the 39th Annual edition of Ohio Speedweek.  Once again facing a circuit he had never made laps at before, Reinhardt logged the 14th quickest time overall and 4th best in his group.  It was a good start, but the key would be to maintain that level of performance throughout the night.

 

The qualifying effort put Reinhardt on the pole of the first heat.  The All Star Rookie of the Year candidate was able to stay out front during the 8-lap event, holding off the hard charging Sam Hafertepe Jr, who had surged into the runner up position from his 6th starting spot by lap 4.  The win gave Reinhardt a spot in the dash redraw.

 

Kyle drew the outside front row starting spot for the first 4-lap dash.  The result was a 4th place finish and the 7th starting spot in the 35-lap A-main.  Reinhardt put together a strong effort, battling inside the top 10 during the first 20 laps.  Despite losing a couple positions late in the event and crossing the line in 12th, it was still a positive night for Reinhardt and team after missing the show on the opening two nights of the summer series.

 

It felt good to get a decent finish and show we’re making progress.  There are a lot of good cars here, so there’s no margin for error.  If you mess up even a little, you go backwards quick“, Reinhardt commented after making his first Ohio Speedweek show.

 

6/15:  Sharon Speedway – Hartford, OH

      (Qualifying 11th overall / 3rd in group, Heat 2nd,  A-main 20th)

 

Hoping to turn the team’s good night at Wayne County into real momentum, Kyle Reinhardt and team rolled East to Sharon Speedway for night four of the All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek.  The 3/8-mile oval would serve as a good measuring stick of the team’s progress.  Their initial visit on May 1st didn’t go very well.  That night, Reinhardt timed 29th that night and ultimately failed to make the feature event.

 

A deep field of 53 cars signed in to take their shot at the $6,000 winner’s share.  Reinhardt got the Capitol Renegade team’s night off to a good start, recording the 11th quickest time overall, good for 3rd best time in his group.  The surface was notably slick, as a few drivers lost the handle during their timed laps, so the result was certainly a good sign of progress for Reinhardt.

 

Reinhardt started on the outside of the front row of his heat race and used a strong move off the cushion, or maybe more accurately the wall, in turn two to surge to the lead on the start.  He held an advantage of a few car lengths over the first six laps, until Hunter Schuerenberg managed to make a run off turn four and slide under Reinhardt into turn one with just enough momentum to slide up in front and take away the lead.  The bad news was the No.91 of Reinhardt finished 2nd, just missing an opportunity participate in the dash redraw.  The good news was they were in the show and had made significant improvements over their May 1st debut at Sharon Speedway.

 

Rolling off 13th in the 35-lap A-main, Reinhardt raced mid-pack during the opening half-dozen laps, maintaining the track position.  Surprisingly, the track surface began to take rubber very early in the event, making the low groove the preferred line for everyone.  While trying to move forward using the middle and top, Reinhardt lost a handful of positions before finally getting into the rubber on the bottom.  Ultimately he would finish 20th, but it wasn’t indicative of their night.

 

I was late getting to the bottom and it cost us several spots“, Reinhardt admitted.  “The car was better than our finish showed.  We timed and raced much better than we did the first time we came here, so I’m happy about that.  I need to thank Bob and Robbie.  They have been busting their tails to make us better and we’re getting there.  We’ll head on to Waynesfield and keep digging“, Reinhardt shared.

Reinhardt and Capitol Renegade Team Making Gains

There’s No Substitute for Seat Time

As the All Star Circuit of Champions (ASCoC) prepared to make a swing through Illinois and Wisconsin just after the Memorial Day holiday, Kyle Reinhardt reflected on his first experience with Midwest bullrings just two weeks prior.  Those nights had provided some valuable information for both the driver and the team.  It was time to apply what they had learned and put themselves to the test once again.

 

6/3:  Fairbury American Legion Speedway, Fairbury, IL

      (Qualifying 5th overall/2nd in group, Heat 4th,  A-main 17th)

 

The series rolled into Fairbury American Legion Speedway (FALS) in Illinois to kick off the 4-race swing that was co-sanctioned with the IRA (Interstate Racing Association).  The event drew a field of 32 cars, including Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade No.91 team.  Right out of the gate they showed progress, recording the 5th quickest overall lap in time trials.  The lap was good for 2nd in Reinhardt’s group.  

 

Reinhardt’s qualifying effort was very good but being second quickest in your group is often a tough spot.  He would need to win the heat race to control his own destiny and make the dash redraw.  Otherwise, he would need to rely on others and circumstances to fall his way to make the dash.  He took the green from the 3rd starting spot in heat number three but came home 4th, missing a shot at the dash.  According to the All Star rule book regarding the dash redraw, “The Heat Winner then the Quickest Transfer from each Heat AND then the top Two (2) from overall time trials that also advance to the A-main through their heat race will, random draw for dash starting position”.  

 

The Neptune City, NJ native rolled off 15th in the A-main, but wasn’t able to mount any forward charge.  Reinhardt took the checkered flag in 17th and then offered his brief insights on the night.  “We were much better in time trials tonight, so I’m happy about that.  We just missed it (the setup) in the feature“, he shared.   

 

6/4:  Wilmot Speedway, Wilmot, WI

      (Qualifying 17th overall/6th in group, Heat 5th,  A-main 11th)

 

The tour ventured north into Wisconsin on Friday for stop number two of the four ASCoC/IRA events.  39 teams entered competition, setting up 5 qualifying and heat race groups for the night.  Reinhardt’s qualifying effort was a respectable 17th overall, however it was only good enough for 6th in his group, which meant he would have a little tougher road to a good finish at the end of the night.

 

Step one of the road back was checked off when Kyle managed to advance from 6th to 5th in his heat race, just making the transfer and putting himself into the A-main for the night.  Reinhardt started 17th in the 30-lap feature event and immediately went to work on step two of the road back, charging forward to reach the top 10 by lap 8.  Midway through the event, a torrid battle among several cars saw Reinhardt slip back to 12th but he continued to battle and ultimately cross the finish line in 11th.  Given the way the evening started, the finish was definitely good enough to consider step two of the road back complete. 

 

6/5:  Plymouth Dirt Track, Plymouth, WI

      (Qualifying 2nd overall/2nd in group, Heat 5th,  Dash 3rd, A-main 8th)

 

Rolling another two hours further north, the traveling band of racers unloaded on the Sheboygan County Fairground to race at Plymouth Dirt Track, a one-third mile bullring located an hour north of Milwaukee.  It was yet another new venue for Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team, which was the norm thus far in 2021, their first season touring with the series.  They were one of 36 teams who signed in to take a shot at the $6,000 winner’s share that was up for grabs in the 30-lap main event.

 

Once again, Reinhardt posted the 2nd quickest time in his group, but this time it was also good enough for 2nd overall in time trials.  Recalling the dash redraw rule mentioned earlier, this meant good news for the Rookie of the Year candidate and his crew.  They were locked into the dash, as long as they were able to transfer in their heat race.  That meant Reinhardt needed to finish in the top 5 of his heat race, which he accomplished.

 

Like his most recent opportunity to participate in the dash redraw, Reinhardt would have a little luck shine on him.  He drew the pole of dash number one, giving himself a good shot at starting on the pole of the A-main if he could fend off his competitors in the 4-lap dash.  Bill Balog, who has many more laps at the Wisconsin track, managed to get by Reinhardt to win the dash, while Kyle settled for a 3rd place finish.

 

Starting 5th in the feature event, Reinhardt was competitive and engaged in a multi-car battle inside the top 10 throughout the 30-lap event.  In the closing laps, the No.91 of Reinhardt faded slightly but still logged a solid 8th place finish.

 

6/6:  Angell Park Speedway, Sun Prairie, WI

      (Qualifying 19th, Heat 7th,  B-main 2nd, A-main 19th)

 

To conclude the 4-race series, 26 teams rolled into Angell Park Speedway, just over an hour west of Milwaukee.  To open the night, Reinhardt registered the 19th quickest time in the field.  Given their improved qualifying efforts on the bullrings so far on the trip, the result was disappointing but it was another opportunity to learn.

 

The struggles continued in the first heat race.  Reinhardt started and finished 7th, landing himself in the B-main.  On the bright side, he was able to race from 4th to 2nd in the B-main, giving himself and the team the 20th starting spot in the A-main.  The tough night continued, with Reinhardt ultimately riding home 19th.

 

Overall we improved nightly, until Sunday, so overall we’re happy.  We time-trialed better on the smaller tracks than we had been.  I feel like I definitely improved at that“, an encouraged Reinhardt commented.  He continued recapping the week, “We’re figuring stuff out night by night and racing a little better at these types of places too”.

 

Looking ahead to Ohio Speedweek, Reinhardt thinks his time on the Midwest bullrings the past month will pay off.  “These tracks were slick to a curb.  Slick is something we’ve been struggling with, so these races showed we’re heading the right direction.  We’ll carry that into Ohio where most of the tracks are slick as well.”

Newlin Headed Back to Williams Grove Friday for 358 Summer Series

Efforts Continue to Stabilize New 410 Chassis

With no 358 sprint car racing on his schedule over the past weekend, there was only one race on the docket for Zach Newlin.  He strapped into the Burke Motorsports/Grove Financial & Associates/Dillman Hauling, LLC. 410 sprint car at Port Royal Speedway on Saturday night.  

 

The night looked to be off to a promising start when Newlin registered the 5th quickest lap among the field of 19 cars during hot laps.  Given the challenges the team has faced as they figure out what their new Maxim wants, it was an encouraging sign.  Unfortunately, the optimism didn’t last.


An unlucky pill draw had Newlin starting in the back of the 2nd heat and he was unable to move forward in his 10-lap qualifying event.  Despite everyone’s best efforts, things didn’t improve for the feature.  After a handful of laps, the team made the decision to bring the No.54 in and save their resources for another night.  It’s been a tough start to the 410 season for this group.  All teams encounter struggles like this at some point and they will find their way through it.  

 

Next up, Newlin will climb aboard the Mansberger Motorsports No.21m again on June 11th for a 358 Sprint Car Summer Series race at Williams Grove Speedway, where he sits 7th in the season points.  That will be followed (tentatively) by another outing at Port Royal Speedway in the Burke Motorsports No.54 on June 12th.  Follow the social media outlets listed below for news and updates!

Zach Newlin Gaining 410 Experience Against Tough Competition

Seat Time Equals Learning

Despite 20 years of karting, 305 sprints and 358 sprints, Zach Newlin was only 12 races into his 410 sprint car career when he walked into the pit area on Monday for the rain-delayed Weikert Memorial at Port Royal Speedway.  Another race means more experience.  He’s not gaining it the easy way either.  Half of those previous events were against the All Stars or the World of Outlaws.

 

The $29,000 to win All Star Circuit of Champions sanctioned event at ‘The Speed Palace’ on Memorial Day would serve as Newlin’s 13th career 410 start, and yet again it would be against the All Stars.     

 

In his laps against the clock in the Burke Motorsports/Grove Financial & Associates/Dillman Hauling, LLC. No.54, Zach Daddy was able to record a very respectable lap, timing 26th quickest out of the 43 cars that attempted qualifying.  The effort provided him with a starting spot on the front row of the second heat race.  Since the format for the special event uses a system that awards drivers points during qualifying and heat races, his only objective was to stay up front, or very close to it.  Points awarded in the heat races are based on where you start vs. where you finish, commonly known in the sport as ‘passing points’.  Early in his heat race, Newlin was holding his own, running in the top 3 against stout competition.  As the race progressed, he slipped a few more spots, ultimately finishing 9th and capturing far fewer points than he was aiming for.  

 

My lack of experience in a 410 cost me there.  A few of those spots are on me“, Newlin admitted.  With no time to dwell on it, he tucked the lessons learned away and prepared for the B-main.  Only the top four finishers would transfer to the A-main.  Newlin knew his 13th starting spot in the last chance qualifying race would be tough to overcome but laps are laps.  Seat time is seat time.  It’s an opportunity to learn.  He managed to work his way forward as far as 9th for a handful of laps, then eventually settled for a 10th place finish in the 20-car field.  It wasn’t good enough to make the A-main but it was progress for the team in only their second outing of the 2021 season.

Reinhardt Shifts Focus to Upper Midwest

Team Ready to Put Frustrating Weekend in PA Behind Them

Kyle Reinhardt was looking forward to getting back home after two weeks on the road.  With three races slated on familiar turf, it would be a good opportunity to put together a few good outings.  It didn’t all play out as he and the Capitol Renegade team had hoped though.  Mother Nature stepped in and took away the shows at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday and Port Royal Speedway on Saturday, then she tried to get the weekend sweep by raining out Port Royal’s Sunday show as well.  Thankfully, the Memorial Day holiday provided a backup plan that allowed Sunday’s show to be held a day late.

 

Port Royal Speedway:  Port Royal, PA  (5/31:  Qualifying 19th, Heat 6th,  B-main 18th)

 

The sun finally appeared on Memorial Day, allowing the big half mile known as ‘The Speed Palace’ in Central Pennsylvania to run it’s annual Bob Weikert Memorial, paying $29,000 to win.  The event is a points-based race where teams earn points throughout qualifying.  At the conclusion of time trials and heats, points are totaled and the top 20 teams are locked into the A-main.

 

Unfortunately for Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team, the sunny weather left them just as frustrated as the weekend rain.  Kyle registered the 19th quickest time of the 43 teams who went under the clock.  Following the mid-pack qualifying run, which garnered Reinhardt 96 points, the team went to work making numerous changes to the No.91.  Reinhardt was slated to start 4th in his heat, and given the passing points format being used for the event, moving forward would be critical.  From the drop of the green, Kyle couldn’t get the forward bite he needed and instead slipped backwards, finishing 6th and only gaining 62 points.

 

The points tally left him a mere 7 points below the count that would have locked him into the main event.  Instead, he would have the 4th starting spot in the B-main.  Just two laps into the 12-lap last chance race, the Neptune City, NJ native’s left front tire went flat, causing him to spin in turn one.  He would restart from the rear of the field, but was unable to recover from the setback and did not make the starting field for the finale.

 

Understandably frustrated at the conclusion of the long holiday weekend, Reinhardt was a man of few words.  “We are still struggling on slick surfaces.  It’s definitely frustrating, especially at a place I have run really well in the past.  We will keep moving forward and keep trying to get better“, he shared.

Kyle and the Capitol Renegade team will be heading west for a swing through Illinois and Wisconsin with the All Star Circuit of Champions.  Thursday, June 3rd the tour will stop at Fairbury American Legion Speedway, known to many as FALS, where the winner will walk away with $5,000.  From there, the series will march north into Wisconsin for three weekend shows that will each pay $6,000 to the winner.  Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, WI will provide the action on Friday night and Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, WI will do so on Saturday night.  The finale will be held at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI on Sunday night.

Reinhardt Logs Top 10 to Open Indiana Swing with All Stars

Lucrative Events on Home Turf Up Next

Racing is no different than anything else in life.  You must always keep learning to keep moving forward.  In his rookie campaign with the All Star Circuit of Champions, Kyle Reinhardt and his team are being reminded of that on a regular basis.  Some lessons are fun to learn, others…not so much.  Regardless, the Neptune City native is eager to learn, improve and achieve consistent success. 

 

Circle City Raceway: Indianapolis, IN

     (5/20:  Qualifying 30th/6th in group, Heat 4th, A-main 9th)

 

The 2021 All Star Indiana Swing kicked off at Circle City Raceway, a brand new facility just outside Indianapolis.  Given the importance of time trials, night one of the four-race series in the Hoosier State didn’t get off to a great start for Kyle Reinhardt.  He registered the 30th quickest lap of 31 entries.  The time placed him 6th in his group, which meant he would need to advance at least one spot in his heat race to lock directly into the A-main.  Reinhardt was able to do one better, working his way into 4th place by the time the checkered flag waved on qualifying.

 

After starting deep in the field in 17th and only gaining a couple positions by the halfway point, Reinhardt showed his never-give-up attitude by running his best laps of the race and surging into the top 10 in the final 5 circuits.  It was a nice recovery and a positive ending to the night.  Reinhardt commented, “Took me a little bit but we got rolling late in the feature and made up some ground.”

Night two in Indianapolis saw 30 teams sign in for competition.  They found a heavier track waiting for them than Friday night had delivered.  Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team would find themselves working from behind after turning in the 26th quickest time under the clock.  Starting 9th in his heat race, Reinhardt found the team’s post-qualifying adjustments did not make the difference they needed to move forward.  He crossed the line in 9th, relegating him to the B-main.  

 

Unfortunately, Reinhardt’s 8th place start in the B-main turned into a 9th place finish.  The team elected to take their first provisional of the season to start 25th in the A-main.  By the halfway point, Kyle had made forward progress for the first time all night, moving up 7 spots to 18th.  As he was working a pass for 17th, two other competitors made contact, with one of them getting into Reinhardt.  While his Capitol Renegade No.91 never stopped, Kyle did lose a few positions and it became clear after the restart that the car was not the same and he was unable to regain the lost positions.  In the end, Reinhardt was credited with a 20th place finish.

 

Reinhardt put the team’s struggles thus far on the Indiana swing squarely on his own shoulders.  “I have got to get better at running time trial laps at the smaller places.  These places call for a different style than the smooth style that works on the bigger tracks.  It makes for a much tougher night when you don’t time well.

 

Gas City I-69 Speedway:  Gas City, IN

     (Qualifying 22nd/2nd in group, Heat 7th,  A-main 18th)

 

The teams moved just over an hour north on Saturday to race at the Gas City quarter-mile oval.  Driver Kyle Reinhardt’s focus on his qualifying effort on the bull ring seemed to pay off a little.  He registered the 2nd quickest time in his group and 22nd overall of the 32 cars that went under the clock.  The effort provided him with the 3rd starting spot in his heat race, from which the top 5 would transfer directly to the night’s A-main, giving the All Star Rookie of the Year candidate good odds of making the show.

 

Just went things were looking a little brighter for the New Oxford, PA resident, the cars at the front of the heat race got together on the start, spinning and collecting Reinhardt, who had no way to avoid the pair.  He lined up 7th for the complete restart but was not able to recover the lost ground, ultimately finishing 7th in the heat race.  

 

Dealt a 7th starting spot in the B-main, Reinhardt was determined to get in the show.  He charged into a transfer spot by the finish of the 12-lap event to accomplish his goal.  He would start 24th in the A-main but they were in.  Racing from deep in the pack always has the added challenges of ‘dirty air’ and traffic, but it’s also possible to race into the top 10 from the back, as Reinhardt has already proven this season.  Although he did move forward in the feature event, the Capitol Renegade No.91 just wasn’t quite good enough on this night and Reinhardt settled for an 18th place finish.

 

Kokomo Speedway: Kokomo, IN

     (Qualifying 25th/7th in group, Heat 9th,  B-main 21st)

 

Not surprisingly, the $26,000 to win Indiana finale at Kokomo Speedway drew the highest car count of the 4-race series, with 42 teams signing in to take their shot at the big money.  Reinhardt recorded the 25th quickest lap overall on the banked, quarter-mile oval, but was in the bottom half of his group, which meant he would start 7th in heat number two.  With only 4 cars transferring to the A-main from each of 5 heat races, his work was cut out for him.  A spin on lap 2 after contact required him to restart at the back of the field and made the job even more difficult.  Following the setback, Kyle was unable to gain positions in the 8-lap heat race, which translated to a 21st starting spot in the B-main.  Unfortunately, he didn’t fare any better in the B-main.  Reinhardt was unable to make significant forward progress and did not transfer to the A-main. 

 

Following his first career Indiana swing, a somewhat frustrated but determined Kyle Reinhardt summarized it this way:  “We show speed at times but we are struggling with consistency.  We will find it.”  He concluded by once again referring to time trials as the key to improving their consistency, sharing “Next week we’re headed back to PA to race.  I’m excited to get back home to familiar turf.  Getting a good lap down will be key.”

Newlin Battles Through Tough Sprint Car Weekend

Wheelman Determined to Rebound as Busy Summer Kicks Off in Pennsylvania

As is often the case during the 2021 racing season, Zach Newlin kicked off this past weekend by strapping into the Mansberger Motorsports No.21m 358 sprint car at Williams Grove Speedway.  This weekend was going to be a little different though, as he was also scheduled to make his 410 sprint car season debut the following night at Port Royal Speedway.  Unfortunately for Newlin, the weekend was going to be anything but typical for the wheelman who has established a track record of success.

 

Friday night, May 21st started off pretty normal with 21 358 sprint car teams signed in at Williams Grove Speedway, which meant the usual three 8-lap heats from which all cars would qualify for the night’s A-main but only the top 4 finishers would make the redraw.  

 

Zach started 5th in the second heat and was able to miraculously miss a hard 2-car crash in turn one on the start, somehow squeaking between the crash and the outside guardrail to avoid contact.  On the ensuing restart, Newlin made a strong move into the third position in turn 3.  He would go on to ride home in third to lock himself into the redraw.  

 

That part of the night seemed pretty normal.  The redraw results placed Newlin in the 8th starting spot for the 20-lap feature.  From the drop of the green, Newlin sensed the handling was off in the Mansberger Motorsports 21m.  On lap 8, things went from bad to worse and it became apparent the issue was with the right rear tire.  The tire went completely flat, forcing Newlin to the pits.  He was unable to return.  The team determined the cause of the tire failure was a bit unusual.  The tire was not cut or punctured; the valve stem had failed.  These types of things are just part of the sport, but it certainly wasn’t the norm for Newlin to end the night early in the pits.  He was credited with an 18th place finish.

 

Next up for Mansberger Motorsports will be the 358 Sprint Car Summer Series event on June 11th at Williams Grove Speedway.

 

All Zach Daddy could do was accept Friday night’s results and move on to Saturday at Port Royal.  After a couple prior unsuccessful attempts to kick off their season, Burke Motorsports was finally able to roll their beautiful orange and blue No.54 Grove Financial & Associates, Dillman Hauling, LLC., Heather Sims Realtor, T&M Homebuilders, Kirby Kitner Excavating, Walker Performance Filtration, Sander Engineering, DMI, out of the trailer to go racing in 2021.  Earlier in May, weather and a family situation had thwarted two prior attempts to race.

 

Zach and the team would need to jump right into the deep end of the pool with their brand new Maxim Chassis.  The format called for time trials, which meant there would be no chance to shake down the new car, other than the few circuits he would get in hot laps.

 

For those who aren’t familiar, even if they are from the same manufacturer, no two frames behave the same.  Each one has its own personality and the team must learn what it wants to get the most speed out of it.  

 

When he signed in for the night, Newlin had some luck at the pill draw.  He drew the lowest pill, giving him the first shot at the track for qualifying.  Time trials quickly provided feedback on the new car, indicating it was not at its best using a familiar setup they had used in the past on other cars.  They were at the bottom of the charts and had work to do.

 

The 24 cars on hand then participated in three 8-lap heat races, which were lined up based on their times in qualifying, with the quickest times up front.  Despite making numerous, significant changes to the car prior to their heat race, Zach was unable to move forward from his 9th starting spot in the heat race.  Upon his return to the pits, the team went back to work again.  They discovered an issue in the rear suspension and were able to resolve it before the feature.

 

Given their 24th starting position, the team’s plan in the A-main was to assess the car 5 laps into the event.  If Newlin was able to pass cars and move forward, he would continue to race, but if not, they would call it a night and save their resources for another night.  While the issue they resolved prior to the feature was definitely a big step in the right direction, the car was still not where it needed to be, so he called it a night 5 laps into the race, resulting in an official 24th place finish.

 

Having lost a couple opportunities earlier in May to begin to learn what this new car wants to make it fast, Newlin and the Burke Motorsports team will need a couple more nights to start to figure out their new piece.  Even the majority of this particular night was spent resolving a suspension issue, which means they don’t really yet know if the changes they made earlier in the evening would have worked had that issue not existed.

 

That’s how this sport is.  Three steps forward, two steps backwards.  As a team, you can’t lose sight of the fact that the net result is forward progress.  Fans want and expect quick success but it takes time for a team and a driver to make a car fast, especially when each has only a dozen 410 sprint car starts on their resume.  Both Newlin and Burke Motorsports have been very successful in their past racing endeavors.  In time, they will find success in a 410 as well.
