Austin Berry didn’t load up at the end of Port Royal Speedway’s Opening Day event with the exact finish he knew his car was capable of, but overall, he picked up where he left off at the end of last season; running near the front and being in contention for podium finishes against a strong field of contenders.

Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Car Reveal

Over two hours before they would be able to fire the engine, the Austin Berry Racing team unloaded and revealed their winter-long labor of love, their Pancreatic Cancer Awareness car, which blends the purple associated with many causes that battle the deadly cancer, with Berry’s traditional yellow and black No.86.

Berry flies the purple colors every five years in honor of his biggest fan, his grandfather, who lost his life to the disease 15 years ago.  In the near future, the team plans to announce more details about the fundraising and awareness efforts they will carry out during the 2023 season.

I’m excited to be doing this again to honor my grandfather and raise awareness about the disease that took him from us and has affected so many people we know.”, Berry shared.  “The car looks great too.  P3 Graphix really nailed the design.

We want to raise money for the cause, but my primary goal this year is to spread awareness and focus on the people it has affected.”, Berry said.

I would love to have all the black space on our car filled with the personalized decals by the end of the year.

Berry was referring to the Pancreatic Cancer Awareness decals the team will be selling that fans can personalize with a note in honor or memory of a loved one, or just a general note of support and encouragement to those affected.

I also want to let everyone know we are working on t-shirt deal.  It is in the works, and we hope to have the new shirts for this campaign and our season within the next month or so.”, Berry said.

100% of the funds raised from the team’s campaign will be donated to PanCan.org to help find a means of early detection.

Early Action

A stout field of 31 super late models was on hand for Sunday’s lid-lifter at The Speed Palace.  Top names like Greg Satterlee, Trever Feathers, Rick Eckert, Ross Robinson, Jeff Rine and Gary Stuhler were among the many quality teams signed in.

The opening day format called for four 8-lap heat races, which were lined up by a random pill draw.  The top five finishers from each transferred directly to the feature event, but only the top three would participate in the invert redraw.

Berry lined up 6th in the first heat race of the afternoon in his The Tire Mart Tire Pros of Harrisburg, Juniata Veterinary Clinic, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, SRI Performance, VP Racing Fuels, JDS Racing, Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, Nathan Berry Beef Farm, Addicted2DirtPR.com, A&C Racing Engines, GO Lithium, Valvoline Pro-V Racing, Super Clean, Rocket Chassis No.86.

The Mifflin, PA native wasted no time charging toward the front from the drop of the green.  Running 3rd after one lap, Berry continued his surge into the runner up spot on the following lap.  He closed the gap a little on leader Justin Weaver but ran out of time and rode home 2nd.

The Day's Finale

The invert redraw would invert either 3, 6, 9 or 12 cars for the starting lineup in the 25-lap $4,000 to win main event.  Unfortunately, it was a worst case result for Berry when the #12 pill turned up, landing him 8th on the starting grid.

In the early going, it didn’t appear the starting spot would hold Berry back.  He quickly moved into 6th on the opening lap, then continued to move forward by running a lane above his competition.

Berry’s Rocket XR1 looked like a rocket.  By the second circuit he was riding in 4th and challenging for more.

Soon after Berry started to notice something amiss.  He was down on power, but the engine wasn’t showing signs of distress, so he worked to battle through it.

Berry held on to a top five spot through lap twenty, but then some of those veterans managed to finally reel him in and get by.  Berry slid to a 10th place finish over the final four laps.

I’m not dissatisfied, just disappointed.  Feel like we let a top five slip through our fingers.“, Berry commented.

Although the core program is the same, Berry and his team had made a number of changes to their program during the offseason.  Plus, they made the decision to start 2023 on the new Hoosier tires so they could start learning how their car would react and making the necessary adjustments to find speed.

We had a lot of speed today, so we are really happy about that, especially given the changes we have made and the switch to the new Hoosier tires.”, Berry said.

Discussing his troubles in the final stages of the race, Berry stated “It ran fine in hot laps, the heats and at the start of the feature, but then the motor just went a little flat.  We are pretty sure we have an electrical issue that caused it.  We will be digging into that at the shop.  The motor is fine.”

We got through day unscathed, so it’s not a bad way to start the year.  We were capable of running 3rd to 5th with the motor at full song the whole way.  We will get that figured out.  I’m excited to keep racing.  The car feels like it did at the end of last year, so given all the changes, that’s a win in my book.“, Berry concluded.

Up Next

The next race for Berry and the team will be the March 25th ULMS event at Port Royal Speedway.

In the meantime, they are planning to test at either Selinsgrove Speedway or Hagerstown Speedway to make sure they have resolved their electrical issues.

Berry Has the Tools To Be a Consistent Contender

Primary Partner The Tire Mart Tire Pros of Harrisburg Returns for 2023 Season; Juniata Veterinary Clinic Joins Team

Mifflin, PA – March 3, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Austin Berry’s super late model program has been on a steady trend in the right direction the last couple years.  It is the result of working hard to build a program the right way, on a solid foundation of knowledge and support.

Berry and his team may have worked harder this offseason than any recent stretch of time.  They continued to build depth in their equipment, parts and support.

All of this combined will keep Berry at the track without the concern of missing races due to failures.  More racing means more opportunity to learn and thus hopefully continued improvement.

Welcome Back

A key piece of the puzzle is primary partner The Tire Mart Tire Pros of Harrisburg, who returns for their second full season in support of Austin Berry Racing.

The Tire Mart Tire Pros of Harrisburg is a family-owned, full-service automotive business that has been serving a loyal customer base for over 54 years. From the beginning, The Tire Mart Tire Pros of Harrisburg has been a family-run business built on the values of honesty and trust. Today, with a tremendous reputation, those values remain, and they continue providing automotive service with a local business touch that is hard to find these days.

Greg and all the folks at The Tire Mart Tire Pros of Harrisburg are just fantastic people.  As soon as we got to know each other, we realized we were the same kind of people and we run our operations the same way.  They work hard and they are honest and trustworthy.  If you are looking for a place to take your car, you can’t find a better group of folks to depend on.”, Berry said.

Also returning are partners Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, Nathan Berry Beef Farm and Addicted2DirtPR.com.

These local businesses run by family and friends have been with me through it all.  I can only ask fans to support them by patronizing them and thanking them for what they do for racing.”, Berry said.

The team has also continued their product partnerships with Kevin Nouse Designs/KND Safety, DMI Bulldog Rears, Swift Springs and DirtCarLift.

New Partners

The team’s efforts on the track last season, combined with their efforts off the track over the winter, have led to several new partnerships and relationships.

Austin Berry Racing would like to welcome Juniata Veterinary Clinic to the team!  The Juniata Veterinary Clinic has been delivering exceptional veterinary care to the animals of Juniata and Mifflin Counties for over 30 years. Their 3-doctor team treats animals of all types and ages, providing a full range of services to ensure that the animals in their community can get all the care they need and deserve.

It means a lot to have a local business in your own back yard want to be a part of what you’re doing.  I am thrilled to have Michaela and Juniata Veterinary Clinic on board.“, Berry said.

In addition, the team previously announced new partnerships with SRI Performance, VP Race Fuels and GO Lithium.  Each of these key partners has brought knowledge, great products and tremendous support to the team.

I know it sounds like I’m just saying what I’m supposed to say, but I truly mean this.  The folks at SRI Performance, VP Race Fuels and GO Lithium are great people to work with.  They have provided service to us above the level I expected.  There is a reason they are successful companies.  You don’t get there by not being a good partner to your customers.”, Berry commented.

The team’s growth didn’t stop there.  They have established several new product partner relationships, including Valvoline Pro-V Racing, Super Clean, Peterson Fluid Systems, Barnes Systems, Quick Car, Sweet Manufacturing, BDR Racing Products, Beyea Headers, Strange Oval, Quarter Master and P3 Graphix.

The Bread and Butter

The foundation of Austin Berry Racing’s on-track program remains unchanged from the past two seasons.  They will continue competing in their Rocket Chassis XR1 on JDS Racing/Penske Racing Shocks with A&C Racing Engines power under the hood.

The good news going into the 2023 season is the team will kick things off with both motors fresh and ready.

New Destinations

Berry and his team are targeting around 40 races on their tentative schedule if all were to go well, but how many races they can actually take on will depend on how the season unfolds.

Port Royal Speedway in Pennsylvania will be the team’s primary home with 19 races scheduled there from early March through early September.

The team will also make stops at familiar tracks Hagerstown and Bedford for big events like the Billy Winn Classic, the Turk Burkett Tribute, the Frank Sagi Tribute, the Gary Martz Memorial, the Nathan Durboraw Tribute and some Lucas Oil Late Model events.

New on this year’s schedule, the team is aiming to venture to Georgetown (DE) and Marion Center (PA) for Lucas Oil and World of Outlaw events.  They are also tentatively looking at traveling to Western Pennsylvania for a pair of Lucas Oil Late Model events at Lernerville Speedway (Firecracker 100) and Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway (Pittsburgher 100).

The part of the schedule the team may be looking forward to the most is the Appalachian Mountain Speedweek for super late models.  The series will consist of 8 races spanning 10 days across Central Pennsylvania and into Maryland.  The series will stop at Clinton County, Port Royal, Hagerstown, Path Valley, Beford (2 shows), Lincoln and Selinsgrove speedways.

Racing For Time Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Campaign

Five years ago, on the 10th anniversary of the loss of his grandfather to pancreatic cancer, Austin Berry decided to dedicate the 2018 season to his late grandfather by racing a purple car and working all season long to raise money for and awareness of the dreadful disease that has only a 9% survival rate, far lower than most other forms of cancer.

Berry committed to honor his late grandfather every five seasons in the same way.  It is now 2023 and it is time to break out the purple once again.  Throughout the season fans will be able to enter to win some unique items, such as Berry’s driving gloves, a tail banner, and body panels from the car.  There will also be apparel available and decals, which fans can sign in memory of a loved one and then place on the deck of Berry’s No.86 where it will ride all season long.  All of these fun opportunities will raise money for PanCan.org.

This campaign means a lot to me, my mom and my entire family.  My grandfather was a big part of my start in racing, so it gives us a way to honor him, but it also allows us to help spread the word about warning signs of pancreatic cancer and maybe help someone recognize the signs before it is too late.“, Berry shared.

Unfortunately, we know too many people who have been affected by pancreatic cancer.  We share an unfortunate experience, so when they find out what we are doing, they want to help however they can.”

The name of the campaign, ‘Racing For Time’, stems from the fact that most cases of pancreatic cancer are not discovered until they reach stage 4, leading to a mere 9% five-year survival rate.  There is no blood test that can detect the disease.  It goes undiscovered until it has advanced enough to cause noticeable symptoms.  Therefore, patients have little time.  Berry hopes increasing awareness and raising funds for research will lead to patients having more time, thus he is ‘Racing For Time’.

The team will release more details about the campaign in the coming weeks.

Up Next

Saturday’s ‘bug day’ at Port Royal Speedway has already been cancelled due to the weather forecast, but the team will still be at ‘The Speed Palace’ on Sunday for the 2023 season opener in The Tire Mart Tire Pros of Harrisburg, Juniata Veterinary Clinic, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, SRI Performance, VP Racing Fuels, JDS Racing, Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, Nathan Berry Beef Farm, Addicted2DirtPR.com, A&C Racing Engines, GO Lithium, Valvoline Pro-V Racing, Super Clean, Rocket Chassis No.86.

Austin Berry Motivated by Boost Received from New Relationship With Team SRI Motorsports, SRI Performance and Stock Car Steel

Fun Promotions in Store for Fans During 2023 Season

Mifflin, PA – February 18, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Austin Berry Racing continues to build their program through continuous improvements on and off the track.  The team recently bolstered the reliability of their parts quality and supply by forming a relationship with national racing parts supplier, SRI Performance of Mooresville, NC.

Comprehensive Components and Parts Supplier

SRI Performance is an automotive performance parts distribution company.  SRI maintains a large inventory of new and used racing parts for all types of circle track, drag racing, street performance, off-road and diesel applications.  SRI carries hundreds of leading brands such as Clevite, Cometic, JE Pistons, Ford Racing, and many, many more.

One of the great things about SRI is they are a one stop shop for anything from racing tires, sheet metal, headers, and bearing components, to nuts, bolts, and drive shafts.  Having a partner like that saves us a lot of time, not just money.“, Berry said.

Excellent Customer Service and Industry Leading Knowledge

SRI prides themselves on their top notch customer service, wide range of knowledge and competitive pricing.  SRI’s staff has a wide range of experiences and backgrounds themselves but can also connect you with someone who has an expertise in the area you need help with.

Any racer will tell you, when you need to get something fixed to get to the next race, time is of the essence.  The quick responses from SRI’s customer service team are really helpful when we need to make decisions quickly.“, Berry explained.

The resources and knowledge they bring to the table are incredibly valuable too.  I was striking out finding a set of headers to be able to get them in time.  I got on the phone with Randy (Keene) and a few days later he was able to find exactly what I need, plus get them drop-shipped right to our shop.  Randy has been absolutely great to me and awesome to work with.

SRI Technical Sales Engineer, Randy Keene, is equally optimistic about the new relationship with Austin Berry Racing.

We are really excited to partner with Austin and his team.  We believe there are big things to come from both Austin and SRI, and this relationship with help those things happen.“, Keene stated.

Promotions and Fan Engagement

Austin Berry Racing and SRI Performance are in the early stages of planning some fun promotions for the 2023 season to give back to the fans while promoting the great products and services SRI provides that could help your team too!

Austin Berry Racing Energized by New Affiliation With VP Racing Fuels

Mifflin, PA – January 21, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Original Photo by Christopher Hockley/WRT Speedwerx

Austin Berry Racing will be energized, quite literally, by their new affiliation with VP Racing Fuels.  The company, a leader in the industry for nearly 50 years, will be the sole supplier of fuels, lubricants and coolants for the Central Pennsylvania super late model team in 2023.

World Leader in Fuel Technology

Founded in 1975, the quest of VP Racing Fuels since day one has been optimum horsepower.

Founder Steve Burns began his quest at the local tracks of Texas, where racers tried his fuel and liked the power gains. His first fuel was christened “C12™,” and from a single location with two employees in San Antonio, Texas, VP has grown to over 200 employees with five company owned and operated race fuel distribution points in Texas, Indiana, Georgia, Delaware and Tennessee, as well as a regional office in southern California.

VP is now recognized by many as the world leader in race fuel technology, with a catalog of more than 80 fuel blends and a growing roster of VP-fueled champions across the entire spectrum of motorsports. The passion and dedication of VP’s development team to staying on the leading edge of technology is legendary. Most of VP’s employees are or have been racers in one form or another and are driven by the competitive will to win. Together, the VP team intends to solidify its position as the true World Leader in Race Fuel Technology for years to come.

VP Racing Fuels has been around a long time.  They established themselves as the top brand on the market and they have remained there for years.”, Berry said.

Performance

You may wonder why VP Racing Fuel is better, more premium, and an exceedingly popular choice over other fuels.

VP Racing Fuel is highly oxygenated in comparison to standard fuels. Fuels that are higher in oxygenation requires more fuel flow. In particular, VP requires 4 to 6 percent fuel flow, which means less fuel is needed to power the car.

VP Racing Fuel is also better vaporized. The higher oxygenation of the fuel ensures the fuel intakes more air. The air combined with the heat from the engine increases fuel burning and improves vaporization.  Fuels that are better-vaporized burn more efficiently than others, which means it needs less fuel to produce power. Using less fuel means it can be money-saving and much longer-lasting.

The high oxygenation process that occurs makes cars use less fuel yet creates more horsepower. Better vaporization and cooler engines ensure a car can run at its maximum capacity. VP Racing Fuel burns quicker than standard fuels, which gives the car much more power.

Cooler engines make cars safer and longer lasting. As VP Racing Fuel burns more efficiently, this requires less heat from the car. Less heat from the car reduces overheating and car faults. VP uses a coolant in their fuel, as well as other products, to combine with its ‘less fuel usage’ benefit to ensure maximized cooling to guarantee lower engine temperatures.

More Than Fuel

VP isn’t just a fuel producer.  They have a top line of oils, lubricants, coolants and other automotive fluids.

Their fuel makes the most horsepower.  That’s the number one reason we have always run their product.  When you combine that with their high quality lubricants and their leading edge coolant products, it was an easy decision who we wanted to align ourselves with.”, Berry commented.

What VP is doing for us this season is significant and we are going to do our part to make sure this partnership benefits them as much as it benefits us.”

Austin Berry Forms Partnership

Berry Excited About Partnership With GO Lithium

Team Set To Become Central PA Dealer for the Popular Brand

Mifflin, PA – January 12, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Original Photo by Jason Walls/WRT Speedwerx

Austin Berry is excited about a new partnership he has formed with GO Lithium Batteries for the 2023 racing season.  GO Lithium is home to the Ultimate Circle Track and Drag Racing Lithium Battery!  Not only will Berry run the powerful, lightweight batteries in his No.86 super late model, he will be a new Central Pennsylvania dealer for the popular motorsports brand.

Built for Motorsports

Hand made in the USA, GO Lithium’s batteries are purpose built for racing. They provide the endurance and durability you can trust. With 1250 cranking amps, weighing only 9 lbs, and used by champions around the country, you can be positive GO Lithium is the correct choice for your team.

The GO Lithium battery has undergone 7 years of research, development, and testing, plus they went one step further and did Real World Dyno Testing.   Their 16V battery is incredibly powerful, recharges quickly, and weighs in at only 9 pounds!  With the lighter weight, the racer is able to reduce gross weight or move ballast where it will be most effective.

People don’t think of batteries as a difference-maker, but the GO Lithium batteries will help us perform better as a result of the weight reduction, not to mention the reliable power.”, Berry commented.

Prismatic cells are more durable and are able to store more power in a smaller area, and that is the technology GO Lithium leveraged to create the only battery on the market using the unique approach.

Built for Safety

GO Lithium’s Battery is safe and was specifically designed for racing applications.  To test, a Lithium cell is subjected to a puncture test in which a steel rod is driven through the cell.  GO Lithium Cells passed this test without any explosion or fire.  This can be an issue with other types of lithium batteries.

The Ultralight Lithium Battery from GO Lithium is also internally balanced, which ensures that the battery discharges and charges its prismatic cells equally. Cell balancing on the battery, which is expensive and thus many manufacturers choose not to do it, increases the lifespan of the product dramatically.

Austin Berry Included in New ‘World of Outlaws: Dirt Racing’ Xbox & PlayStation Console Game

Mifflin, PA – September 27, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

If you’ve ever wondered what it was like for Austin Berry to make laps around Port Royal Speedway, Williams Grove Speedway and other tracks, now is your best chance to find out!

In the new ‘World of Outlaws:  Dirt Racing’ video game for Xbox and PlayStation consoles released today (9/27/22), you can choose to race as Berry against the best super late model drivers in the business in his sharp looking Tire Mart of Harrisburg / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86.

It’s really cool to have local Saturday night races like myself, Andy (Haus), Dylan (Yoder) and others right alongside the national touring guys that do this for a living!  This sport is ground by us, the Saturday night teams as a foundation, and I think it is really awesome that a kid who might just happen to be in the infield on a Saturday night as an Austin Berry fan, can go home and race with my paint scheme!“, Berry commented about his inclusion in the new video game.

With the racing season coming to a close, this game will provide the perfect way to not only count the days until the 2023 season opener, you will learn a lot about how challenging it is to set up and race a dirt super late model.  When you get to the track next year, you’ll have an even greater appreciation for the hard work the drivers and teams put in.

Berry’s Charge Comes to Abrupt End at Port Royal Speedway

Issues Bring Season to a Premature End

Port Royal, PA – September 12, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Austin Berry’s 2022 season has contained several high points and has established the team as one to watch for on any given week, especially on their home turf at Port Royal Speedway.

The one hurdle that the team can’t seem to clear quite yet is putting together a string of top five and top ten finishes.  Doing so is never an easy task, especially against the level of competition typically in attendance at ‘The Speed Palace’, but  Austin Berry Racing’s level of performance has trended in that direction the past two seasons and they feel they should be getting those results now.

The goal Friday night was to finish off their Port Royal season with a run representative of the capabilities of their Tire Mart of Harrisburg / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86.

September 9:  Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     [22 cars, Heat 5th (7), A-main 20th (13)]

Prior to the evening’s racing action, Berry spent some time with his wife and family selling team souvenirs; apparel and body panels.  He had the chance to meet and interact with current fans, and to greet some new fans.

We want to thank everyone who stopped by to buy shirts, sweatshirts and body panels before the races tonight.  We love connecting with the fans, and it all helps our little team keep going.“, Berry said.

When the racing portion of the evening kicked off, there were 22 super late models signed in at the ‘Night Before the 50’ program.  Three heats for the field were set by pill draw.  All finishers transferred to the main event, with the top three being handicapped for the top starting spots.

Berry knew he would have no time to waste if he wanted to earn a handicap spot from his 7th starting spot in his 8-lap heat race.  Heavy traffic kept him busy for a few laps until he broke free and forged his way forward.

Berry reached the  4th spot on lap five and started eyeing his opportunity for more, but the veteran Gary Stuhler wrestled the spot away from the Mifflin, PA resident and dropped Berry to a 5th place finish.

From his 13th starting spot in the 25-lap feature event, Berry was confident he had a good enough car to get to the top ten and possibly the top five with the aid of a caution.  He was aggressive but patient in the early going, finally beginning his forward march on lap seven as he moved into 12th.

Berry reached 11th two laps later, then 10th on lap eleven.  As he began to execute the pass for 9th in turn two with the race only at the halfway point, the engine sputtered and his march came to an abrupt end.  He coasted along the inside fence and off the racing surface through the backstretch opening.  He was officially credited with 20th.

We were on the charge into the top 10 with a good car when the motor decided it was done.  Unfortunately, the issue is terminal, and with our other motor also in the shop waiting on parts, our season is done.  We won’t be able to make the trip to Dog Hollow next weekend as planned.”, a disappointed Berry shared.

We truly appreciate everyone’s support this season!  Our program continues to improve.  Our off-season will be busy, especially improving our engine program.  We will be back in 2023 to keep working our way to the front.

Austin Berry Posts Strong Podium Run in Butch Renninger Memorial

Port Royal Finale This Friday; Hustle at the Hollow Added to the Schedule

Port Royal, PA – September 5, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  Brian Rhoad / WRT Speedwerx

Austin Berry rolled into Port Royal Speedway Saturday afternoon hoping his team’s bout with bad luck was behind them.  After all, the law of averages would have to balance things out soon, right?

Berry’s electrical issue and blown tire at extremely inopportune times the prior week during the Lucas Oil Late Model show had turned an evening full of potential into a night of frustration.

The team has put in the hard work all season and had some good results to prove it, but they were due for some good fortune on a night when the spotlight was a little brighter, like it would be for the Butch Renninger Memorial.  They didn’t need any big breaks; they just needed the bad luck to stay away.

September 3:  Butch Renninger Memorial / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     [37 cars, Qualifying 3rd in Group B, Heat 2nd (2), A-main 3rd (2)]

A stout field of 37 super late models signed in to take their shot at the $7,333 top prize, as well as they numerous contingency prizes offered throughout the night, which included quick time, top three heat race finishers, hard charger, hard luck award, and several others.

The format for the ULMS-sanctioned annual event called for time trials, heat races and a B-main to set the field.  Berry was the third car in Group B to hit the track for qualifying.  When the last of the eighteen cars in his group had made their laps, Berry’s 20.265 stood as 4th quickest.

Berry’s lap earned the outside front row starting spot in the fourth heat for his Tire Mart of Harrisburg / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86.

The top four finishers from each of four 8-lap heat races would transfer to the A-main, with the top two participating in a redraw to set the top eight starting spots.  The top three finishers from each of two B-mains, plus two provisional starters would round out the 24-car starting field for the night’s finale.

Despite his front row starting spot, Berry knew securing a spot in the redraw couldn’t be taken for granted.  He was lined up next to Gary Stuhler and Mason Zeigler was sitting in the next row.  Berry wasn’t able to beat Stuhler off of turn two on the opening lap, so he settled into second.  From there, it was a balance of trying to track down Stuhler but not gamble too much and allow Zeigler to take away the redraw spot.  Berry was able to hold on to the 2nd spot to the checkers.

Berry had a little good fortune shine on him during the feature redraw.  He pulled the number two, putting him once again on the front row.  This time he would be next to Greg Satterlee, who has been one of the hottest late model drivers in the country this year.  Row two included Alex Ferree and Michael Norris, while Rick Eckert and Hayes Mattern made up row three.

The main event was slated for 33-laps in honor of the late Butch Renninger’s car number.  When the green flag dropped, Berry was in Satterlee’s tire tracks.  On the second trip around, Ferree slipped by Berry to grab the 2nd spot.

On the restart following a lap eleven caution, Berry charged back around Ferree and glued himself to Satterlee’s rear bumper.  Over the next few laps, Berry challenged the Indiana, PA driver, trying to build enough momentum to clear the No.22 and claim the top spot.

Berry’s Rocket XR1 was very good but not quite good enough to complete a pass for the lead, so he settled into the runner up spot for several laps.  Meanwhile, after initially dropping back to 5th, Michael Norris had been working his way back toward the front.  He had also gotten around Ferree on the restart and was chasing Berry.

While Berry was searching for a way to run down Satterlee, Norris closed and challenged the Mifflin, PA driver, eventually capturing the runner-up spot on lap 17, dropping Berry to 3rd.  The top five of Satterlee, Norris, Berry, Eckert and Ferree were all separated by a couple seconds over the final ten laps and crossed the finish line in that order.

First off, we want to thank the Renninger family for putting this race on.  They’ve been doing it 19 years and it’s a great event.  We know Heidi, Holly and the whole family put a lot of work into it and it’s good to have an event like this in our area.“, Berry said.

“I wanted it (the track) to be black, but we took off a lot better than I thought we might. That restart was what we needed.  During the caution I got a chance to look at the racetrack and think about what I was doing.  I was able to get back to second on that restart, but Greg (Satterlee) was getting away from me a little bit.  I started searching and that left Michael (Norris) get around me, so I probably should’ve stuck to what I was doing.  These are two very good cars sitting here in front of us (on the podium), so for this little motor and our little team, I’ll take it tonight.

It was a consistent night from beginning to end for Austin Berry Racing, with no surprises for a change.  Berry’s performance continues to trend upward and gain consistency month by month, season by season and people are beginning to take notice.

I want to thank everyone who helps us, starting with The Tire Mart of Harrisburg.  Greg and everyone down there are great people.  If you want to support someone who supports local racing, go see them for all your automotive needs.”, Berry added.

We finally got Davey from Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop to the races tonight, and I want to thank him for his support.  Big thanks to Jim Stevens and JDS Racing.  He’s been a huge help to our program.  And of course my mom, my dad, everyone who helps out on the car at the shop and at the track.  We’ve had a lot of help this year and it makes such a big difference when I don’t even have to ask and I know things are taken care of.

Up Next

Austin Berry Racing will be in action one final time at Port Royal Speedway this Friday night as part of the ‘Night Before the 50’ program.  It will be the final points race of the season for the super late models.  Despite missing four races earlier this season as a result of engine issues, Berry sits 7th in the season championship point standings, just 20 points behind 6th place Dylan Yoder.

Extended Schedule

The season won’t end Friday for Berry.  He has added one more event to his 2022 schedule.  The team will travel to Dog Hollow Speedway to compete with the ULMS on Friday and Saturday, September 16th and 17th in the inaugural Hustle at the Hollow, where Saturday’s super late model finale will pay $10,000 to the winner.

Season Stats

15 races, 0 wins, 4 top 5’s, 7 top 10’s, 10 top 15’s, 13 top 20’s

Berry Bitten by Bad Luck Twice in One Night at Port Royal Speedway

ABR Turns Focus to Upcoming Butch Renninger Memorial

Port Royal, PA – August 31, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  DK Photography

Last season, just weeks after his first career super late model win at Port Royal Speedway, Austin Berry reached his first Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series preliminary feature event during the Rumble by the River event at ‘The Speed Palace’, but the rains came on Saturday night and wiped out Saturday’s finale.

When the series rolled into town last weekend for the 2022 edition of the event, Berry was back at Port Royal and ready to take his shot at another career first; a Lucas Oil series finale main event.

August 26:  Rumble by the River – Night 1 / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     [51 cars, Qualifying 18th in Flight A, Heat 5th (6), A-main 15th (15)]

A stout field of 51 super late models entered competition Friday night, August 26th for night one of the Rumble by the River at Port Royal Speedway.  A new preliminary night format for the event split the field into two groups for the night, which would allow every team in attendance to compete in a feature event.

Two sets of timed qualifying and heat races set the twin 25-lap feature lineups.  Teams accumulated points throughout the night and those points would determine the starting lineups for six heat races the following night, leading to the $50,000 to win finale on Saturday.

Berry timed 18th quickest in Flight A, a little off his goal of a top ten qualifying run.  Less than half a second separated him from that goal, but with the team’s bigger engine in the shop they knew it could come down to that.

While the qualifying run may not have handed Berry a front row starting spot, the car has raced well all season, so he would just have to pass some cars in his heat race to improve his starting position in the feature.

Teams waited out a lengthy rain delay before heat races could hit the track.  When racing finally resumed, Berry started outside the third row in the heat number three.  In the opening laps, he battled closely with the No.32 of Shaun Jones, but eventually worked his way past and into 5th.  At the close of the 8-lap qualifying race, Berry crossed the line in 5th.

In his 25-lap A-main, Berry rolled to the green flag from the 15th position.  The Mifflin, PA resident slipped to 16th in the hectic opening laps, then recovered to 15th for the first half of the race.  Just past the halfway point, things started coming together for Berry.  He worked his way into the 13th position on lap seventeen.

The mid-pack battle was fierce.  Berry fought hard to not lose any ground in his Tire Mart of Harrisburg / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86, but when the checkered flag flew and the dust settled, Berry was scored 15th.

August 27:  Rumble by the River – Night 2 / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     [51 cars, Heat 4th (5), B-main (DNS)]

Friday’s preliminary night effort wasn’t great, but it was good.  Berry came into Saturday’s action sitting 30th in points of the 51 drivers competing for the 24 available starting spots in the 50-lap main event.

Six heat races were lined up based on the accumulated points, with the six highest drivers in points getting to start on the pole, the next six would start second, and so on.  This put Berry in the 5th starting spot in the final heat race.  Only the top three finishers from each 8-lap race would advance to the A-main.  The remaining teams would compete in one of two B-mains, from which only the top two finishers would advance.

Berry came out of the gate strong, surging past Tyler Erb in turns one and two on the opening lap to take the 3rd spot down the backstretch.  Erb fought back around Berry in turn four and took back the final transfer spot at the line.

Berry chased Erb, trying a couple different lines to close the gap enough to wrestle the spot away, but he wasn’t able to do so.  He finished 4th, at least providing himself with a better shot in the B-main.

With only the top two finishers transferring from his 10-lap B-main, Berry was hoping to strike quick from his third starting spot.  This was his best shot so far to reach another career goal by making a Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series finale.  The team finished preparations and he rolled into staging to wait for the call.

When the time came, Berry flipped the switch on the dash to fire the engine.  Instead of the usual roar of a race engine, there was smoke from under the dash, then the gauges all went dark.  The crew scrambled but there wasn’t enough time to diagnose and fix the issue.  Optimism turned quickly to disappointment as the B-main went green without Berry, bringing an end to his Lucas Oil weekend.

August 27:  Makeup Feature / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     [15 cars, Heat #1 2nd (8), Heat #2 1st (1), A-main 10th (2)]

Following the Lucas Oil Late Model feature, Port Royal Speedway was scheduled to run the completion of the final 21 laps of their August 6th feature event that was suspended by rain.  In the opening four circuits before the rains came that night, Austin Berry had fallen back to 5th from his starting spot outside the front row.  With the new opportunity, he hoped to recover and make his way back to the front.

Before he could do that, electrical repairs needed to be completed.  The Austin Berry Racing team, with assistance from the Gary Stuhler Racing team, identified the issue.  A plastic zip tie, valued at less than a penny, had broken and allowed a starter wire to make contact with the header, which melted the coating and caused a short.

The timing of the unusual issue couldn’t have been worse, costing Berry a very good chance at making the lineup for the $2,000 to start feature.  While that opportunity was lost, fortunately the issue was resolved in time for Berry to compete in the makeup race where he could hopefully finish the evening on a high note.

When the race resumed, Berry held down the 5th position until he finally worked his way past Hayes Mattern and into 4th on lap 13.  As the race entered the final five laps, Berry was closing in on Gary Stuhler and pressuring him for 3rd.

That’s when bad luck reared its head for the second time of the night.  Berry’s left rear tire exploded with just four laps remaining, bringing out the caution.  Despite not receiving any courtesy laps to make the change, the ABR crew executed a quick tire change to get the No.86 back on the track.  Berry was able to get to 10th by the time the checkered flag fell on the event.

The guys have been working really hard and we found a lot of speed.  I’ve been able to get some of the feel that I’ve been looking for.  We just had some terrible luck this weekend and didn’t get the results we felt like we should have.“, Berry commented.  “We were really close to having a great weekend.  I’m happy with where we are at with the car, but of course there’s always more to do.  I feel like I’ve learned a lot and improved behind the wheel this year too.”

We’ve got a few races left this year and I still feel like we can get a win before we’re done.

Up Next

Berry will look for a little better luck this Saturday night in the 19th Annual ULMS Late Model Butch Renninger Memorial at Port Royal Speedway, the traditional Juniata County Fair opening night event.

Berry Flexes Some Muscle Early at Port Royal; Feature Outcome Will Have to Wait

Austin Berry was back at Port Royal Speedway Saturday night, looking to rebound from a part failure that took him out of feature competition prematurely for the first time all season the previous weekend.

The format for the night was one of Berry’s favorites:  dual heats with passing points.  Fifteen teams signed in on a hot and steamy summer night in Central Pennsylvania.

August 6:  Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     [15 cars, Heat #1 2nd (8), Heat #2 1st (1), A-main PPD]

Berry’s pill draw set him up for an opportunity to garner a lot of passing points in his first of two 6-lap heat races.  He started 8th and wasted no time blasting around the high side to navigate his way to the 2nd position by the time lap one was complete.  The Mifflin, PA driver settled in there and rode home as the runner up.

The lineup for the second heat race was set by inverting the starting lineup of the first, which meant Berry would roll to the green from the pole.  In heat two he surged ahead of the field to a comfortable lead and was never challenged, claiming the win and a very solid point total in The Tire Mart / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86.

Berry started the 25-lap feature event from the outside pole position and had his sights set on taking advantage of the high line and clean air to get out in front.  The opening lap did not work out quite like he pictured.  Berry got loose, lost momentum and gave up a couple spots.

Berry collected himself and by lap four had started working on recovering the lost track position when suddenly the rains came, bringing a stop to the action for the night.

The remaining 21 laps will be completed at a later date.

The car was really good in our heat races.  I could make it work where I needed to so I could make the most of the best spots on the racetrack.  I want to thank Josh, my dad and all the guys for all their hard work to get us there.“, Berry commented.

We didn’t change much for the feature, but we were too loose, and it cost us on the opening lap.  Maybe the rain actually helped us, and we can be better when the race resumes.

Up Next

Austin Berry Racing will take the next two weekends off to focus on preparations for the upcoming Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series invasion of Port Royal Speedway for the Rumble by the River 2-day event, which will pay $50,000 to the winner of Saturday night’s finale!
