Austin Berry Experiences First DNF of 2022 After Part Failure

Will Look to Rebound Next Weekend at Port Royal

Coming off two consecutive top five finishes there earlier in July, Austin Berry was looking forward to returning to Port Royal Speedway on Saturday night, July 30, to try to continue the streak in The Tire Mart / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86.

 

Berry actually has a few impressive stats this season that may have gone unnoticed.  Other than the Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model series visit to Port Royal back in April, Berry has not needed to run a B-main in 2022.  Coming into Saturday night, he had also finished every feature event he started this season.

 

July 30:  Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     [29 cars, Qualifying 9th Group 1, Heat 6th (10), A-main 19th (16)]

 

We made a bunch of changes coming into this week.  We’ve been pretty good this season but you can’t stop trying to get better.  We think the changes we made will solve some challenges we have faced all year and make our program better overall.“, Berry shared before strapping in at ‘The Speed Palace’.

 

Berry’s two qualifying laps didn’t produce the desired result.  He clocked in 9th best in his group, at least two tenths of a second off the goal.  It doesn’t sound like much, but that blink of an eye can be the difference between a great night and a bad night.  As it turned out, when the Mifflin, PA native returned pit-side, the team found an issue with the suspension and went to work replacing the part.

 

Starting in the fifth row of his 8-lap heat race and needing to reach the top six to advance to the night’s finale, Berry had his work cut out for him.  It appeared he may have to simply better his position for the upcoming B-main, but the car and Berry were good enough to fight their way past Andrew Wylie, Gene Knaub and Andy Haus to reach 6th and make the transfer.

 

We had an issue in qualifying that put us near the bottom of the chart and left us with a hill to climb to get back where we feel we should be.  The car still wasn’t great in the heat, so I was pretty happy to be able to race my way in through the heat and avoid the B-main.  It gave us time to work on it for the feature.Berry said.

 

Whatever the ABR team did during that time, it made the car noticeably better.  Berry jumped to the high side right away on the start and motored from his 16th starting spot all the way to 9th by the time one lap was in the books. 

 

Berry found himself in a tight battle to remain in the top ten, swapping spots and landing anywhere from 9th to 11th through the first fifteen laps.  As the race reached the final ten laps, Berry sensed a vibration.  Within two laps it culminated with a bang.  He immediately killed the motor as cars around him took evasive action.

 

Berry coasted slowly to a stop a quarter mile later, bringing his night to an end.  The records show a 19th place finish with only 18 of 25 laps complete.  It was the first DNF, ‘did not finish’, of the entire season for ABR.

 

I couldn’t enter (turns) one and three as fast as I needed to.  The car was too loose.  I think the changes we made took us the right direction but we need to adjust some more.  We’re not happy with how the night ended, but we still feel good about where the car is handling wise.”, Berry concluded.

 

Before the team loaded up to head home, they had already made the determination there was no engine issue, which was good news.  Further investigation at the race shop revealed a failed coupling that joins the transmission to the driveline.  It was the first time in the team’s seven years they had experienced that kind of failure.  It was unfortunate but in the scheme of things, it could’ve been much worse.

Team ABR Invades Frank Plessinger’s Hagerstown Speedway

With Austin Berry Racing’s usual Saturday night track not running super late models this past Saturday night, Austin and the crew ventured south to the spacious and ultra-smooth Hagerstown Speedway in Hagerstown Maryland. 

 

While making their way to Hagerstown, the team encountered a problem with a power steering hose on their toter-home.  After a call to a friend who provided some rapid roadside assistance, the team was back on the road south.

 

July 16:  Hagerstown Speedway / Hagerstown, MD

     [30 cars, Qualifying 15th Group B, Heat 4th (7), A-main 11th (12)]

 

Temps near 80 degrees greeted the field of 30 super late models that were ready to do battle just south of the Mason-Dixon line.

 

The ULMS-sanctioned event split the field into two groups for time trials, followed by four heat races, from which the top four finishers advanced directly to the feature.  The remaining cars participated in the B-main to transfer six more drivers who to the night’s finale.  Two provisional starters rounded out the starting lineup for the A-main.

 

Austin Berry logged the 15th fastest lap in Group B time trials, which resulted in the No.86 starting 7th in heat number four.  Austin raced his way to a 4th finishing position in the 8-lap qualifying race.  

 

The strong heat race effort earned Berry the 12th starting position in the feature event in The Tire Mart / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1.

 

“We guessed wrong on some things for our time trial run and that left us playing catch up the rest of the night.  Our notebook is fairly limited for this place since we only get here once or twice each year, plus we haven’t been here with this smaller motor in a long time, so we just had to make a decision where to start the night.  It turned out to be the wrong choice.”, Berry shared.

 

In the main event,  Austin settled into the 11th position for the first 19 of 30 laps.

 

On lap 20, Austin passed Gary Stuhler to claim the 10th spot, but the veteran racer Stuhler regained the position on lap 24.

 

When the checkered flag flew at the conclusion of the 30-lap main event, Berry finished in 11th spot.  The race was won by Kyle Hardy.

 

“We set up to use the cushion in the feature and I think we got a lot better.  It was fun racing with Gary (Stuhler) tonight.  He was good on the bottom and we were good up top, so it was just a matter of who didn’t make mistakes.  After I got by him I thought I was good, but I bobbled late in the race and he got back by me.  He’s always smart out there, so he moved up to take my line away.”, Berry said.

 

“That was a stout field we were up against and we were competing for a top ten spot at a place we don’t run much, so overall we’re pretty happy with out night.  All the guys are really working well together lately.  We’re communicating and executing well, so I’m really pleased with that.  That’s the foundation that’s necessary for a team to move their program to the next level.”

Berry In the Top-5 Again at Port Royal Speedway

Kid’s Night Meet and Greet a Great Experience for Everyone

Austin Berry arrived at Port Royal Speedway Saturday night looking to maintain the roll he has been on since his recent return from the sidelines of the racing season in Pennsylvania.  His first two races back yielded a top-10 at Selinsgrove and a 2nd place finish at ‘The Speed Palace’.

 

Berry’s night was a good one from start to finish.  It kicked off with fun Kid’s Night activities and closed with another top-5 finish.

 

July 9:  Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     [24 cars, Qualifying 4th in Group B, Heat 2nd (1), A-main 4th (3)]

 

The speedway’s Kid’s Night meet and greet before the program was a great start to the night for Berry, who always enjoys interacting with fans, especially the young ones who are just being introduced to the sport.

 

There were countless hero cards signed, photos taken and smiles all around during the pre-race festivities.  Berry and his wife, Chasity, gave away goodie bags to all the kids who stopped by to visit, including two special bags that contained golden tickets, good for a free kid’s shirt.

 

The 24-car super late model field that signed in Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway was split evenly into three groups for time trials and heat races.  The top four cars from each time trial group would be inverted to set the starting lineup for the 8-lap heat races.  All cars would transfer to the 25-lap A-main, but only the top three finishers would be handicapped to make up the top nine starting spots in the finale.

 

Austin Berry took advantage of his pole position starting spot in heat race number two and jumped out to a commanding lead early.  He maintained that lead through the first six laps of the race.  Gary Stuhler had begun to gain ground on Berry mid-race, but Berry got back into his rhythm and had put some distance between himself and Stuhler again on lap seven when the caution lights flashed on.  When the race resumed, Stuhler found his way past and picked up the win, while Berry came home 2nd, still comfortably in a handicap spot.

 

As an added bonus to the Kid’s Night activities, following the heat races, two dozen nerf balls that were donated by Berry’s primary sponsor The Tire Mart of Harrisburg, PA, were tossed to kids in the grandstands.  One of those balls was autographed by Berry and the lucky boy or girl to catch the special ball won an Austin Berry shirt.

 

Berry started inside row two in the feature event.  He moved into 2nd spot on lap four and kept a firm grasp on the position through lap twelve.  It was then that, once again, Gary Stuhler came knocking and moved past the Mifflin, PA driver to take the runner-up spot.  

 

The very next lap, Jared Miley arrived on the scene and did the same to Berry.  In a race that lasted over 9 minutes, about 45 seconds had not gone Berry’s way, but it was enough to lose two spots.  

 

As the laps wound down, Berry began to reel Miley in, but it was too late to complete the recovery and he settled for a 4th place finish.

 

We had a 2nd place car, but the driver put on a 4th place performance.“, Berry said, summarizing his night with a combination of humor and disappointment in his voice.  “The guys who race here are all so good, it’s hard to get away with a mistake.  You make the wrong choice, they pounce.

 

Berry went on to tell the inside story to explain his comments.

 

Early in the race when Jeff (Rine) was out in front of us leading by the better part of a straightaway, I could only maintain the gap, not close it.  I changed my corner entry to try to improve on exit and try to reel him in.  Instead of helping, it made me worse.  I couldn’t tell for a few laps because Jeff didn’t seem to be getting any further away, so I probably ran a half dozen laps like that.  By the time I decided to give up on improving my corner exit, I had caught lapped traffic and Gary was on my heels.  Within a couple laps both he and Jared (Miley) had slipped past me.  At that point I went back to my original line, and I got quicker again, but it was too late.  I should have gone back to that line two or three laps earlier.  If I had, we probably finish second.  Lesson learned the hard way.”, Berry shared.

 

The finish may have fallen short of Berry’s growing expectations for himself and the team, but it kept their momentum going.   Finishes of 10th, 2nd and 4th since their return are a solid stretch of runs they can continue to build on.

 

I’m glad we were able to have a solid run tonight when our partner The Tire Mart was here at the track.  We thank Greg and his family for coming out tonight.  We hope they had a great time and we thank them for their support of our race team.  We truly appreciate it.“, Berry said.

Berry Runner-up at Port Royal Speedway in Impressive Return

Veteran Eckert Wrestled the Lead Away in Closing Laps

Austin Berry and the entire ABR team know what they are capable of.  They just haven’t had ample opportunities to demonstrate it this season, thanks to a series of issues, which were further complicated by parts delays.

 

Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway it looked like Berry may have finally disposed of the monkey that had been firmly entrenched on his team’s back lately.  The Mifflin, PA native backed up his top ten at Selinsgrove last week with an impressive run at ‘The Speed Palace’, leading laps 3-20 and finishing runner-up to veteran Rick Eckert, who was the only one capable of spoiling Berry’s party.

 

July 2:  Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     [17 cars, Heat 1st (2), A-main 2nd (3)]

 

A little luck at the registration pill draw provided Austin Berry with the outside front row starting spot for the first of two heat races for the evening.  Each qualifying race would be eight laps and all cars would qualify, however only the top four finishers would be handicapped for the A-main starting lineup.

 

Berry got out of the gate quickly in his heat race, grabbing the lead from front row mate Tim Wilson.  Berry never looked back, and went on to win by 1.092 seconds, securing a handicapped starting spot for the finale in The Tire Mart / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86.

 

Larry Neiderer and Tim Wilson occupied the front row of the 25-lap feature starting lineup, with Berry and Hayes Mattern in row two.  Wilson and Berry wasted no time assuming the top two spots by overtaking Neiderer on the start.

 

Austin Berry then went to work, nipping at Wilson’s heels looking for a way to the front.  He pulled alongside Wilson’s No.3 in turn two on lap two but couldn’t complete the pass.  When the pair reached turn four, Wilson slipped just a bit out of the racing groove.  In the split second it took to gather it back up, Berry had charged by on the low side to take the lead.

 

From laps three through twenty Berry was in command, at one point holding a lead of 3.1 seconds.  He survived multiple restarts, a near miss of a slowing car in turn four, and navigated lapped traffic smoothly.  

 

On a lap three restart, Wilson and Colby Frye lined up behind Berry and on the lap 13 restart it was Wilson and Trever Feathers.  Berry maintained his lead through both.  With twelve laps remaining, Rick Eckert moved into 3rd behind Feathers, then moved into 2nd one lap later.

 

Berry fended off Eckert for the next seven laps, but as the pair came to the line to complete lap 21, Eckert nosed ahead and slid up in front of Berry in turn one to claim the top spot.  Berry came home with his best finish of the season, a runner up showing in front of his home crowd.

 

We were close. Josh (Sheaffer, crew chief) and I went back to a baseline we know works for this car.  We gambled on tires and I got too tight during the long green run.  I couldn’t hold the center, so I slowed my entry but it got worse.  We were fast but I think the clean air made us a little better than we really were.  It was definitely tighter in traffic.  We got off to a really good start this season but then struggled with part failures and different things, so we’ll take this.  Feels good to be back.  I really like coming here.”, Berry commented.

“I’m excited for the rest of the season.  We have stuff to work on but I’m comfortable in the car.  Despite being sidelined for a while, I think we’re closer to where we need to be than we were back in April when we ran in the top five.

Berry will return to Port Royal Speedway this Saturday night, July 9th, on Kid’s Night to try to grab his first win of the season.

 

Before racing begins Saturday night, Berry’s No.86 Rocket XR1 late model will be on display behind the grandstands starting at 4pm.   Kids are invited to stop by, pick up a hero card and take a picture with Austin!  The team will also have some goodies for the kids!

Austin Berry Earns Top-10 in Return After Four Week Absence

Port Royal on Tap This Weekend

Austin Berry’s 2022 season got off to a solid start back in March and April and optimism in the ABR pit area was high.  The team appeared poised to build on their 2021 success, which included Berry’s first super late model victory.

 

The month of May wasn’t as encouraging.  The team was sidelined as a result of parts delays.  That was followed by a short-lived return in late May when they encountered another part failure.

 

Last weekend, The Tire Mart / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86 finally returned, and Berry appears ready to pick up where he left off in April.

 

June 25:  Selinsgrove Speedway – Selinsgrove, PA

     (22 cars, Heat 5th, A-main 10th)

 

Austin Berry unloaded at Selinsgrove Speedway on Saturday night, June 25th along with 21 other teams.  The field was divided into three, 8-lap heat races using a pill draw.  The outcome of the qualifying races would set the starting lineup for the feature event.

 

When a team isn’t racing, they aren’t able to keep up with the changes in the sport and they aren’t improving themselves.  The goals for ABR Saturday night were simple:  get back to work on the handling of their Rocket XR1 and get through a complete night in one piece.

 

The night started with a brief hot lap session and ABR’s plans quickly got derailed.  During the three lap session, a clump of mud had impacted the cooling fan, broke the blades and sent one into the radiator, damaging it beyond repair.

 

Berry’s team was able to borrow a radiator from Trent Brenneman’s limited late model team and install it just in time to make the call for their heat race.  Using a great start to surge forward, Berry raced his way from his 8th starting spot to a 5th place finish in the first heat race of the night.

 

Upon his return pit-side, Berry learned his newly installed radiator was leaking.  The issue was significant enough that it was clear it would not last long enough to get through the 25-lap feature event later in the evening.

 

Once again, the team turned to a fellow competitor for help, this time borrowing what they needed from Tim Wilson.  They scrambled to complete their 2nd radiator change of the evening in time for the main event.

 

The work was wrapped up in time for Berry to assume the 13th starting spot for the feature.  He used the opening laps to find his rhythm, then began to move forward.  By lap nine Berry had cracked the top ten and began challenging for more.

 

Late in the race, Berry found himself in the midst of a battle for positions seven through nine when the caution lights flashed on.  The final restart didn’t play out in Berry’s favor.  He slipped slightly to a 10th place finish.

 

Considering we spent the majority of the night solving radiator problems, we weren’t too bad out there tonight.  I just wish we had been able to spend a little more time focusing on improving the handling of the car, but that’s how it goes sometimes.“, Berry shared.

 

Berry and his team may have only accomplished one of their goals for the night by finishing the 25-lap feature and putting the car in the box in one piece, but they’ll take it.  

 

What happened after the last restart and during the final few laps is on me.  I didn’t take care of my tires the way I should have during the caution, so my restart wasn’t what it should’ve been.  Learned a lesson the hard way.

 

I can’t thank Trent (Brenneman) and Tim (Wilson) enough for helping us out tonight.  We needed to get through a night, and we couldn’t have done it without them.  I’m really looking forward to getting back to Port Royal next week.  We were tied for 3rd in the points there when we had issues in late April, so I want to get back there and pick up where we left off.  I’m ready for this monkey on our back to find somewhere else to hang out.“, Berry commented, trying to bring some humor to what has been a frustrating stretch for him and his team.

Austin Berry Racing will return home to Port Royal Speedway for their first race there since April.  The super late models will be on the card as part of the PA Sprint Car Speedweek Greg Hodnett Classic.

After six long weeks on the sideline waiting for parts for both ABR engines, Austin Berry is finally ready to strap back into his dirt super late model and get back to work.

 

Berry will be in action at Selinsgrove Speedway’s Thursday Night Thunder $3,000-to-win show on May 26th in The Tire Mart / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86.

 

Austin Berry Racing will then venture to the Hesston Speedway in Hesston, PA on Saturday night May 28th for their $3,500-to-win event.

Berry’s Return Delayed; Team Reevaluating Objectives

Mifflin, PA – April 28, 2022

Austin Berry has been forced to sit out of action the last two weekends while waiting on engine parts to put either of their two engines back in action.  In an effort to shorten their time on the sidelines they worked with their engine builder, A&C Racing Engines, to possibly combine resources from the two engines to make one that would get them back to the track.  Unfortunately, the team encountered challenges with that concept and has determined it isn’t a viable option.

 

Given that, ABR will sit out a bit longer until A&C Racing Engines has the proper parts to make repairs.  The team expressed their thanks and appreciation to Allen for the time and effort he has dedicated to trying to get them back to the track as quickly as possible.

 

Allen and everyone at A&C has been great.  It’s certainly not their fault we have been forced to sit out”, car owner Ken Berry commented.

 

“There are a lot of supply issues this season and we’re not the only ones affected.  We tried to do everything we could over the winter to try to prevent needing to sit out any races this year, but it still happened.  We just want to apologize to our fans.  We’ll be back soon, and we’ll be ready to go after another win“, Austin Berry added.

 

Although Berry had his No.86 The Tire Mart / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 in the thick of the points battle at Port Royal Speedway before the engine issues occurred, that has changed due to their absence.  

 

We’re going to step back and look at our schedule.  It probably doesn’t make as much sense to chase the points (at Port Royal) now, so we will look at our options for some weeks and possibly venture to other places when it makes sense.  We’ll still be at Port Royal most of the time but everything that has happened opens up some other options“, Austin shared.

 

ABR is anxious to get back to the track of course.  The team is currently planning some cool things for this summer’s Kid’s Night at ‘The Speed Palace’ and they are working on some promotions for their primary partner, The Tire Mart in Harrisburg, PA.

Berry Digs Out of Early Hole to Make Lucas Oil Event

Positives Emerge from Challenging Day

Port Royal, PA – April 12, 2022

If you’re competing against the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, you can’t have anything go wrong.  You can’t make a mistake.  The field is too deep to back your way into the finale.

 

Five minutes into Austin Berry’s day at Port Royal Speedway, a part of him had to be thinking “let’s just load up, we’re done”.  Why?  As he took to the track for his hot lap session, something went wrong mechanically.  It wasn’t clear exactly what at first, but back in the pits the diagnosis was a blown power steering line.

 

With only minutes to get in line for their spot in time trials, the Austin Berry Racing team went into high gear.  What likely appeared to some to be chaos was actually an organized, high speed repair involving at least a half-dozen crew members.  They did miss their spot in line, but they made it in time to join the end of the line and get the opportunity to run one lap under the clock.  The lap, 15th quickest in group two, wasn’t up to their standards but at least they still had a chance to get in the show, even if it was slim.

 

April 10:  River Valley 40 / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

       (37 cars, Qualifying 15th, Heat 7th, B-main 4th, A-main 20th)

 

Earlier that day the Central Pennsylvania high-banked half-mile track had rain, sleet and snow flurries blowing across its surface.  Against the odds, the afternoon brought 37 super late models, some moments of sunshine, and racing.

 

Following Berry’s scramble to get a qualifying lap in the books, he regrouped and rolled out 8th for the fourth and final 8-lap heat race.  The top four finishers would transfer directly to the A-main, while the remainder of the field would race for one of three final transfer spots in a B-main.  Berry managed to advance as far as 6th briefly but after a torrid battle with Garrett Alberson and Dylan Yoder, Berry settled for a 7th place finish.

 

It’s too bad we were buried deep in the starting lineup for that race because of our earlier issue.  That was one of the best handling cars I’ve ever had here“, Berry said as he climbed out of The Tire Mart / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Kevin Nouse Designs – K1 Race Gear / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / DirtCarLifts / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86.

 

Austin Berry was three spots away from a major recovery for his day.  If he could move from his 6th starting spot in the 10-lap B-main into the top three, he could still put his team in the show after an unfortunate start to their day.  He wasted no time charging into 4th by lap two.  He then set his sights on Hudson O’Neal, who held down the 3rd and final transfer position.  Berry worked high and low trying to find a way to get to O’Neal.  As the checkered flag fell on the event, Austin found himself just 0.5 seconds out of that 3rd and final transfer spot.

 

All the hard work had not all been fruitless though.  They found themselves in position to earn the track provisional into the evening’s finale.  The track provisional is awarded to the team highest in the speedway’s season point standings that did not transfer into the feature event.  The team’s entire season of hard work that had propelled them into 4th place in the season standings, paid off in that moment.

 

First off, I have to give a huge thank you to my crew.  How they diagnosed the issue, removed the power steering line, installed a new line, and got me rolling again in time to take a qualifying lap is amazing to me.  That was a significant effort to execute in a handful of minutes.  They get the credit for keeping us in the game today.  I also have to give a shout out to Hayes Mattern who let us borrow his spare, new power steering line.  Can’t thank him enough“, an appreciative Berry said.

 

Berry’s 40-lap A-main run was thankfully uneventful.  Starting at the back of the 26 car field, he finished off his day with a solid effort, coming home 20th.   He noted afterward he was encouraged that the car didn’t drop off over the course of the race, which was a longer one than they normally get to run.  

 

I feel pretty good.  We overcame a lot today.  Along with the blown line, after the B-main we discovered issues with two (spark) plug wires.  Maybe we wouldn’t have even needed the provisional if I would have had all eight (cylinders)”, Berry said with a shrug and a grin.

 

I give our day a ‘B’.  We learned a lot about what we are capable of.  We moved forward every time we hit the track and we passed some of the best in the business.  I learn a lot racing with these guys“.

 

Berry concluded his statements by saying, “Two years ago we would not have even come to this race.  Now our program is at a point where we come and believe we can qualify.  Leaving here today, I know we belong.  We can compete.

Berry Back on Track with Top 5 at Port Royal

ABR Up to 4th in Season Championship Point Standings

Austin Berry Racing came out of the gate strong in 2022, showing they had been doing their homework, learning from their opportunities in recent years, and applying it all to race consistently at a higher level.

 

A couple weeks ago they returned to their race shop after a two-race weekend, frustrated and scratching their heads a bit after 11th and 16th place finishes at Williams Grove and Port Royal respectively.  It wasn’t just the finishes really, it was the way the car handled and failed to respond positively to their changes.

 

It was time to hit the reset button.  To ‘go back to work’, as Berry put it.  Inclement weather provided an off weekend and an opportunity to do so.  The team went over the car with a fine tooth comb, replaced a couple damaged parts, and went back to the setup they started with a month earlier.

 

The team returned to Port Royal Speedway this past weekend with The Tire Mart / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Kevin Nouse Designs – K1 Race Gear / DMI / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / DirtCarLifts / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86 to find out what dividends their efforts would pay.  The results were certainly positive.

 

April 2:  Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     (23 cars, Qualifying 1st, Heat 2nd, A-main 5th)

 

The first Saturday in April found 23 super late model teams signed in to compete on a sunny but seasonably chilly day in Central Pennsylvania.  A random pill draw was used to separate the field into three groups for combined hot lap / time trial sessions.

 

Austin Berry wasted no time showing they were ready to race at the front of the field again.  He posted the quickest lap in group three with a 19.382, which was also the fastest lap in the entire field.

 

I’m very happy to see that the work we did following our subpar performance a couple weeks ago paid off.  That’s rewarding “, Berry said following the solid start to his day.

 

The top four in each group were inverted to set the heat race lineups, so Berry rolled off 4th in heat number three.  Finishing in the top two was the primary goal because those drivers from each heat would participate in the redraw for one of the top six starting spots in the feature event.  Once again Berry was strong from the drop of the green, surging into 2nd on the opening circuit of his 8-lap heat race.  

 

On lap three, Matt Cosner slipped by Berry to claim second, but the battle for a redraw spot wasn’t over.  Berry remained poised and worked his way past Cosner and back into second on lap five.  He then set his sights on leader Dylan Yoder.  Berry closed the gap slightly but there wasn’t enough time remaining to mount a challenge for the win.

 

The redraw could have been friendlier to Berry, but you have to play the hand you are dealt.  He pulled number 6, putting him outside the third row for the 25-lap, $3,000 to win feature event.  By lap two, Austin had claimed the 5th position and turned his focus toward Gary Stuhler, just ahead in 4th.

 

While Berry was on the move into the top five, Colton Flinner had claimed the lead, with Trever Feathers, Dylan Yoder and Gary Stuhler in pursuit.  An early yellow slowed the event but following that, the event went caution-free the rest of the way.  The top five remained largely in tact, with only a couple position changes occurring late in the race.  Berry was on the heels of Feathers in the closing laps but wasn’t able to get close enough strike, and rode home with a solid top five.

 

That was one of the best cars I’ve ever had in the slick.  The car didn’t take off very well, but it continued to build speed throughout the feature.  If we could’ve taken off the way we ended, we would’ve been much better.  We’ve still got work to do.  We’re still a long way off from that 48 “, Berry said, referring to Colton Flinner who has been the class of the field thus far in 2022 at Port Royal Speedway.

 

Berry is off to a solid start nonetheless.  His top-5 and earlier top-10 have him currently sitting in 4th in Port Royal’s season championship point standings, only five points out of 3rd place.

Austin Berry: Time to Get Back to Work

Frustrating Weekend Builds Notebook, Refocuses ABR

Coming off a season opener back on March 6th that saw Austin Berry come out of the gate looking strong, ABR entered their first three-race weekend of the season feeling positive and ready for the very competitive ULMS weekend.  

 

March 18:  ULMS / Williams Grove Speedway / Mechanicsburg, PA

     (21 cars, Qualifying 10th, Heat 6th, A-main 11th)

 

Friday night brought 70 degree weather and 21 super late models to the famous Williams Grove Speedway on a mid-March evening.  Warm weather in March and super late models at ‘The Grove’ are both rare occurrences in PA.

Over the past couple seasons, Berry and team have made it a goal to compete at multiple tracks each year.  The team knows that is an essential aspect of learning and growth.

 

You have to race as much as you are able and challenge yourself at a variety of facilities.  It’s the best way to improve.  It makes me better behind the wheel and it makes all of us better at understanding what our car needs”, Berry shared.

 

Berry’s night started off reasonably well with a 10th quick qualifying effort and a surge into 3rd place early in his heat race.  Contact with another car entering turn 3 early in that race sent Berry spinning and relegated him to the rear of the field for the restart.  He was only able to rebound to a 6th place finish in the short event, which put him 16th on the starting grid for the 30-lap feature event, instead of the top-10 starting spot it appeared he would have.

 

The Mifflin, PA native clawed his way to an eventual 11th place finish on a surface that was a bit narrow and challenging to pass on.  It wasn’t quite the finish Berry felt they were capable of, but they had added a couple lessons to their notebook.

 

March 19:  ULMS / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

 

Saturday’s ULMS event at the ‘Speed Palace’ was cancelled due to rain.

 


One highlight of the weekend occurred prior to Sunday’s on-track activities at Port Royal Speedway.  The speedway officially presented Berry with a beautiful plaque to commemorate his 2021 Most Improved Driver award.

 

 

 March 20:  ULMS / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     (32 cars, Qualifying 3rd in Flight 2 , Heat 3rd, A-main 16th)

 

The weather front that moved through Pennsylvania and washed out Saturday’s event brought everyone back to reality as more normal March temperatures and conditions set it.  A high of 50 degrees, spitting rain and 15 mph winds were the order of the day for the final event of the weekend.

 

None of that kept the race teams away though as 32 super late model teams signed in.  Austin Berry’s pill draw placed him in the second flight for group time trials, and he promptly ripped off the third quickest lap in a stout group.

 

The lap put Berry in a good position to claim a spot in the redraw through his heat race.  He earned the second starting spot in heat three.  A top two finish would hand him a spot in the redraw and would mean he would start no worse than 8th in the 30-lap A-main.

 

On the opening lap Berry slipped back one spot to third.  He spent the remainder of the 8-lap qualifier trying to reclaim that prized spot, pulling to the bumper and even alongside Jacob Hawkins on multiple occasions.  Berry was working hard to time his passing attempt just right in hopes he would be close enough to strike if the door opened.

 

When two cars run so close together, the air flows over the trailing car and therefore no longer creates downforce on the nose of the car.  That loss of pressure on the nose of the car will cause the car to wash up the track, unable to hold its line.  That’s what happened to Berry on multiple occasions as he tried to work back into second.  He ultimately finished 3rd, which meant an 11th place starting spot in the feature event.

 

In an effort to keep up with the tricky, cold weather, day-turned-to-night, surface, as well as solve problems from earlier in the day, Berry and team made some major changes prior to their feature.  Those changes did not pan out.  Berry knew early on he had a very loose racecar and was unable to enter the corners as aggressively as he wanted to.  As a result, he slid backwards through the running order as he fought the ill-handling racecar to a 16th place finish.

 

I’m extremely frustrated.  We all are.  We have been fighting little issues since our test session back at the beginning of March.  We have been trying new stuff and I think we got off our sequence for adjustments.  Nobody to blame.  We made our decisions together”, Berry commented.

 

Berry and team have certainly raised the bar for themselves the past year.  They have been running more consistently than ever and as a result, they expect more.  

 

We push ourselves.  We know we have the stuff it takes, so we want to get our program to a place where being off a little off means running 10th“, a determined Berry explained.

 

We just need to get back to work”, Berry concluded.
