Kyle Keen returned to Lincoln Speedway over the weekend, nearly a month after his last visit resulted in a runner-up finish.

In the month that had passed, Keen endured multiple rainouts and had only completed one race, a URC event at Selinsgrove.  Saturday night he was looking to pick up where he left off and begin to build some consistent momentum.

Play the Hand You Are Dealt

As is typical at Lincoln Speedway when the 358 sprint cars are on the card, a deep field was pit-side.  Thirty-six teams signed in for the show, which lined up heats by pill draw, then set the feature lineup with the top five finishers transferring and only the top three being handicapped to the front.

Keen’s pill draw set him up with an uphill challenge for the night by putting him 8th on the grid for the fourth heat race.  He got a great start and raced into 6th on the opening lap, then started his charge for more.  

A few laps in, Keen was the victim of a spin in front of him.  With nowhere to go, he got collected in the incident.  Fortunately he was able to restart the race at the rear of the field, but he was only able to get back to 6th by the end of the 10-lap qualifying event in the Fine Line Auto Body, Keen Parts/CorvetteParts.net, Doubling Gap Ranch, Shetron, Auction & Equipment, LLC., Wicked Dog Grille, Heishman Racing Fuels, Wicked Cushion, DL Lehman Construction, Gearhead Coffee, Jeremy Zarfos Photography, Coyle’s Lawn Maintenance, 2B Wrapped, 4 Leaf Clover Farms, Turn 2 Terribles Podcast & Media, Kyle Keen Motorsports No.17.

After missing the transfer by one spot, Keen made his way into the feature with a 4th place finish in the B-main.  From his 24th starting spot in the A-main, he was able to climb to 18th over the course of the twenty laps.

“It wasn’t the night we were hoping for, but I felt we were decent all night despite the outcome.“, Keen said.  “It was just one of those nights when you have to play the hand you are dealt.“

“After the track took rubber, it was tough to really see how good or bad we were.  In that situation you just have to hold your ground and defend.  Going on offense is tough.“

Although not on his original schedule, Kyle Keen will return to Lincoln Speedway this Saturday, July 15th.

Date With URC at Selinsgrove Next on the Calendar

Kyle Keen is over two months into his 2023 season but only has five races on the ledger thus far in the Fine Line Auto Body, Keen Parts/CorvetteParts.net, Doubling Gap Ranch, Shetron, Auction & Equipment, LLC., Wicked Dog Grille, Heishman Racing Fuels, Wicked Cushion, DL Lehman Construction, Gearhead Coffee, Jeremy Zarfos Photography, Coyle’s Lawn Maintenance, 2B Wrapped, 4 Leaf Clover Farms, Turn 2 Terribles Podcast & Media, Kyle Keen Motorsports No.17.

Those five races have produced very up and down results, combined with glimpses of high potential.  Keen’s greatest desire right now is to get into a rhythm, something the weather and mechanical issues have prevented so far this season.  Seat time is the only way to keep getting better.

Learning Moment

Lineups for the four heat races for the 34 cars on hand at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night were set by pill draw.  The top five finishers would transfer to the A-main but only the top three would be handicapped to the front of the starting lineup for the finale.

Keen started 3rd in his 10-lap heat race and worked his way into the runner-up spot on lap three.  He held that spot, trying to run down the leader for the next seven laps.  On the final circuit the Carlisle, PA native slipped one spot to finish 3rd.

“With a lap to go I tried blocking the bottom line and I got out-experienced by a veteran racer. Definitely a good learning moment for me.“, Keen said.

Fortunately, the lost position didn’t hurt Keen, as he still claimed a handicap spot.

 

A Complete Night

Keen started on the pole for the 20-lap main event but front row mate Kyle Spence led the opening lap.

Keen chased Spence the entire distance but with the track taking rubber, it was tough to get close, let alone make a move.  He kept a firm grip on 2nd through the checkered flag.

“Tough for me to swallow being so close. I messed up the start and got out-experienced again on the initial green and was never able to get close enough to the leader to attempt to get it back.  While I’m not satisfied with second, I’m happy to be in contention for a win.  It also feels good to put a whole night together and bring home a career best for me in my second year in a 358 (sprint car).“, Keen said.

“Thank you to my crew, family, wife, sponsors and anyone who supports my program.  I’m hungry for that first win and we are working hard to do so.  Special thanks to my dad, Brint, Dakota Kuhn and Jordan Givler for a late evening Thursday dropping the motor back in so we could be here to race.”

 

Up Next

Kyle Keen will compete with the URC at Selinsgrove Speedway on Sunday, June 18th when the 360 sprint cars join the Appalachian Mountain Late Model Speedweek program. 

“Hopefully we can click off a couple full nights like that in a row and get into that rhythm we have been looking for.”, Keen commented.

Kyle Keen Motorsports and Keen Parts Partnership Rolls On

The partnership established last season between the Kyle Keen Motorsports 358 sprint car team and Keen Parts/CorvetteParts.net has been rolling on through second season together.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no blood relationship between them.  A happenstance meeting brought them together, a friendship formed and a partnership was born.

Racing Tradition

Keen Parts is no stranger to auto racing.  The Ohio-based business has a long history of partnerships with  racers at every level, from NASCAR to drag-racing television stars on Street Outlaws: New Orleans.

Owners Tom and TJ Keen enjoy racing so much, they sponsor several teams and have done so for many years, often through their alternate business name, CorvetteParts.net.  They have successfully partnered with familiar names in NASCAR and ARCA racing like Earnhardt, DiBenedetto, Lajoie, Boat, Tiff and Mullins.

Kyle Keen, his father Shawn and late grandfather Jesse also have a steeped tradition in racing.  Their history in dirt track sprint car racing is a well-documented one that is centered in Central Pennsylvania but whose reputation extends well beyond those borders.

Tom, TJ, Shawn and Kyle all have a rich tradition and a track record of success in racing, so it comes as no surprise a partnership was born.

Common Ground

The sprint car racing partnership all started through a chance meeting with sprint car driver Kyle Keen in early 2022.

“At the time I was working for a marketing company in the evenings. I received a phone call on my lunch break and Tom Keen was on the other line. I immediately knew who he was from watching NASCAR, and from that point forward we really hit it off, and never looked back. It was fun to share the same last name, and I joked with Tom, calling him my long lost uncle. We really try to keep it fun.”, Kyle shared.

Tom and TJ are also familiar with the Central Pennsylvania area.  They come to the Carlisle Fairgrounds twice each year for shows like ‘Corvettes at Carlisle’, which are key events for their business, Keen Parts.

Kyle Keen Hangs Tough With URC at Bedford Before Issues

Kyle Keen has had good speed so far this season.  Most weeks he has been in a good position with an opportunity to take his night down a path toward a positive result.  A driver can’t ask for much more than that.

Mechanical issues and mistakes, two things all drivers want a chance to go back and do differently, are a just a part of the sport.  Keen has certainly experienced both.  Those are the things that take your night down the wrong path, away from opportunity.  Those are the things teams work so hard to minimize.

The only way to get better at both is to race.  Rather than sit at home over the weekend and not get better, Kyle Keen and his team decided they would load up and haul to Bedford Speedway Friday night to compete with the URC.

I Hate Surprises

Keen and his Fine Line Auto Body, Keen Parts/CorvetteParts.net, Doubling Gap Ranch, Shetron, Auction & Equipment, LLC., Wicked Dog Grille, Heishman Racing Fuels, Wicked Cushion, DL Lehman Construction, Gearhead Coffee, Jeremy Zarfos Photography, Coyle’s Lawn Maintenance, 2B Wrapped, 4 Leaf Clover Farms, Turn 2 Terribles Podcast & Media, Kyle Keen Motorsports No.17 started inside row number two for his heat race by virtue of his pill draw.  

Although every driver wants to win every race they enter, with all cars transferring from both heats due to the short field, Keen was under no pressure in the heat race.  The laps were all about learning what the car needed for the feature later in the evening.  The Carlisle, PA native finished 3rd but was clearly using his track time to his advantage.  He turned his fastest lap of the event on the final circuit.

Keen started 4th in the 25-lap A-main but slipped to 5th in the early going.  For a handful of laps, he slipped back to 6th but around lap twelve the car came to life using the high side of the speedway.

Keen climbed back into 5th on lap twelve and began to run down the 4th place car despite noticing the brakes fading a bit on his No.17.  Unfortunately, that’s when he got an unexpected surprise.  For some reason, the car jumped out of gear.  As he tried to bring the car to a stop, Kyle discovered the brakes were completely gone.  That sequence of events brought an end to his night.  He officially finished 11th.

“Well, tonight was another night of having a fast race car but not really having anything to show for it at the end of the night.“, Keen commented.  “We learned a lot about the new tire and we had a fast car, so there are definitely positives to take away from tonight.”

“If we keep doing what we are doing and putting in the work to eliminate the little issues and mistakes, it will come together for us one of these nights!”, a positive Keen concluded.

Keen Flashes Speed All Weekend, Garners a Top Ten

Coming into the month of May, Kyle Keen still didn’t know much about his racecar.  He had a top ten in the season opener at BAPS Motor Speedway, but that was a daytime surface that took rubber.  His next stop, at Williams Grove Speedway, was a DNQ thanks to electrical issues.  Then Mother Nature showed up and erased pretty much the rest of April.

Finally, it was time for back to back races Friday and Saturday under sunny skies.  It was time to see what they had.

Gimme a Brake!

Keen’s night at Williams Grove opened with a friendly pill draw that put him on the pole of his heat race.  He lost the race to turn one, settling into 2nd and working to keep pace with the leader while feeling out his Fine Line Auto Body, Keen Parts/CorvetteParts.net, Doubling Gap Ranch, Shetron, Auction & Equipment, LLC., Wicked Dog Grille, Heishman Racing Fuels, Wicked Cushion, DL Lehman Construction, Gearhead Coffee, Jeremy Zarfos Photography, Coyle’s Lawn Maintenance, 2B Wrapped, 4 Leaf Clover Farms, Turn 2 Terribles Podcast & Media, Kyle Keen Motorsports No.17.

On lap six Derek Locke slipped by Keen, dropping the Carlisle, PA native to 3rd but in the end it wasn’t important.  Keen finished 3rd but the top four finishers made the redraw.

In the 20-lap A-main that closed out the night, Keen started 8th but immediately turned heads by charging into the top five by lap three.  He held a firm grasp on the spot to the halfway mark.  It was at that point a brake issue cropped up.

Keen fought hard to maintain his track position by altering his driving style to offset the loss of braking power.  He managed to only lose two spots over the next eight laps, then one more on the final circuit, landing him in 8th at the checkers.

“Tonight was a much needed night for our team. We were up to 5th but unfortunately a brake line came loose and I had no brakes the rest of the way.  It’s too bad.  The car was really good.  I had great speed.  I’m just glad I was able to hold on and finish 8th.  It’s another top 10 for us this year and a step in the right direction.”, Keen commented.

Lesson Learned

Saturday night brought a stout field of 38 teams to Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, PA for the National Fallen Firefighters “Guise-Little Memorial” race.

Keen started 5th in his heat race and blasted his way to 2nd in the early going, but before the field could be scored at the line, he got a little out of shape and slipped all the way back to 5th.

Never one to hang his head or dwell on his mistakes, Keen refocused and continued the battle.  Without the aid of a caution, he managed to claw his way to a 4th place finish.  A top three finish would have put Keen in the redraw with a shot to start close to the front, but instead he would take the green for the feature from 15th.

Keen was never able to build any forward momentum in the 20-lap A-main.  The tires just didn’t seem to ‘fire’ as they say and he slipped back a few spots on the opening lap.  He remained mired in traffic throughout and crossed the line in 20th.

“I made a mistake that derailed our night.  After I drove from 5th up to 2nd in the heat the cushion bit me and it cost me two spots, so I ended up 4th and out of the redraw.“, Keen shared.

“In the feature we just missed a few small things on the setup with adapting to the new tire in the slick.  The good news is we learned a lot about the new tire this weekend, so I’m really looking forward to hitting the track again soon. Just need to keep working on our small track driving and setup, but we will get there!“

Keen Welcomes Back Partner Doubling Gap Ranch for Fourth Season

Doubling Gap Ranch is a family-owned working ranch and event venue located in central Pennsylvania, just outside Newville, PA. They operate on over 200 acres nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Blue mountains. The family and facilities are dedicated to the development of quality Blue and Red Roan Foundation bred American quarter horses.

The ranch is also a world-class breeder of straight Egyptian Arabian Show Horses.  They have been the grand champion or reserve grand champion at the World Arabian Horse show in Scottsdale, AZ for the last three consecutive years.

Horses First

Doubling Gap Ranch selects most of their horses from Texas as yearlings and two year-olds where they have been with their Dams and large herds on an open pasture ranch environment.  Simply stated this allows a horse to be a horse, first.

Doubling Gap Ranch knows the background of every horse they own. Their program emphasizes and continues with the benefits of a horse gains from being able to live in a natural herd environment while moving through their high-touch methods.

Their program creates a soft, good minded, horse with a strong foundation that enables the horse and rider to move in any direction when they leave the ranch.

The ranch and horses are supported by expert resources from the fields of agronomy, healthcare, nutrition, training and handling. This includes working closely with Purina Feed Research to optimize the growth and conditions required to provide healthy horses that can stand up to the rigors of training and work.  Their horses have been also handled by some of the top trainers in the US who focus on traditional training methods.

Activities and Facilities

Doubling Gap also stocks cattle year-round, providing the opportunity for all the horses and clients to experience real Ranch activities.

The ranch offers AQHA Foundation Roan Ranch horses for sale, indoor & outdoor riding arena/event venue, a Rodear course, a working dog, horsemanship clinics and equine education, a beef cattle ranch, rail riding, and an obstacle course.

Kyle Keen Scores Top Ten at BAPS Motor Speedway in First Start of 2023

Lincoln Speedway 358 Opener on Tap This Weekend

Seven months is a long time.  That’s how long Kyle Keen was on the sidelines, waiting for his motor to be repaired and the cold winds of winter to subside.

By the time he arrived at BAPS Motor Speedway Sunday afternoon, he was more than ready to strap back into his No.17 and get the 2023 season rolling.

Keen has also been looking forward to this season for another very special reason.  His No.17 will be adorned with a throwback scheme to honor his late grandfather, Jesse Keen.  The design Keen and his father, Shawn, chose was the one the team was running the year Jesse passed away.

“Something felt right about bringing the car back from the year my grandpa passed away.  He had Brian Leppo behind the wheel and Steve Suchy on the wrenches that season but we lost him in May, so there was a lot of racing that never happened.  It feels like this car has unfinished business.“, Kyle Keen shared.

Debatable Decisions

Keen’s day started with some good fortune.  He drew the pole of the second heat race.  

On the top-dominant, slick daytime surface, the key would be for Keen to get to turn one first from his inside front row starting spot.  With a well-timed launch in turn four, he pulled it off and jumped out to a two car length advantage, leading the field down the backstretch.

Keen remained out front at the line and held his advantage by sticking to the high side of turns one and two.  As he exited turn two, the caution lights flashed on for a spin at the back of the field.

When the caution was displayed, it appeared the full field had crossed the start/finish line, but officials indicated that was not the case and ordered a full double-file restart.

The second time, Keen dropped the hammer again aiming to win the race to turn one but instead another caution was called and the Carlisle, PA native was penalized one row for jumping the start.  As is almost always the case, it was debatable, however the only option was to race hard.

Things went from bad to worse on the restart, as Keen fell to 5th in the running order.  The top six finishers would transfer to the A-main, but track position is always critical on a daytime surface.

Keen continued to battle.  On a late race restart, he was able to wrestle 4th away from Tyler Ulrich to claim the final redraw spot.  He held on to the spot to the checkered flag.

 

Staying Focused

Despite the events of the heat race and a tricky racing surface, the key to the remainder of Keen’s day would be his focus.

Car control would be key and if the track were to take rubber, keeping his machine in that narrow racing line would be essential.  

As a top four finisher in the heat race, he participated in the redraw.  The result wasn’t quite as lucky as his earlier draw.  With positions one through nine up for grabs, Kyle pulled the 9th starting spot for the feature in his Fine Line Auto Body, Keen Parts/CorvetteParts.net, Doubling Gap Ranch, Shetron, Auction & Equipment, LLC., Wicked Dog Grille, Heishman Racing Fuels, Wicked Cushion, DL Lehman Construction, Gearhead Coffee, Jeremy Zarfos Photography, Coyle’s Lawn Maintenance, 2B Wrapped, 4 Leaf Clover Farms, Turn 2 Terribles Podcast & Media, Kyle Keen Motorsports No.17.

There is little margin for error on a racing surface like drivers encountered Sunday at BAPS Motor Speedway.  Drivers find themselves fighting the balance between being aggressive enough to move forward but conservative enough to make it to the end.  Keen survived tight racing and multiple cautions, battling the rubbered-up racetrack throughout the 20-lap A-main for a 7th place finish.

“Overall, our car has decent speed and I’m excited for the rest of the season!  Thanks to everyone that helps make this possible! Can’t complain with a top 10 right out of the box.“, a smiling Keen commented.

Keen’s Solid Night Derailed Again; Balance of Season in Jeopardy

He has been searching for a way to break through and turn the potential into tangible results, but that has been a hurdle that seems to keep getting taller the closer he gets to it.  Keen has experienced a frustrating pattern of race nights that start strong but end with something short of reasonable expectations, usually as a result of things he can’t control.

 

Saturday night Keen and his team unloaded at Lincoln Speedway simply looking to head back home later that night credited with the kind of finish they were truly capable of.

 

August 20:  Lincoln Speedway / Abbottstown, PA

     [29 cars, Heat 3rd (1), A-main 21st (10)]

 

Heat lineups for the 29 cars on hand for Lincoln’s Barry Skelly Memorial race, a Summer Series event for the 358 sprint cars, were set by pill draw.  The top six finishers from each of the three 8-lap qualifying races would transfer directly to the A-main, with the top four finishers making the redraw.

 

Keen’s night started with a bit of luck when his pill draw landed him on the pole of the third heat.  Cody Fletcher was able to grab the lead at the drop of the green, with Keen falling in line behind him in second.

 

Keen held the runner-up spot to the halfway point of the race when Wyatt Hinkle worked his way past the Carlisle, Pennsylvania driver, dropping him to third.

 

Keen pulled the number ten in the redraw, and started outside row five in the 25-lap main event.  He was just looking to put his equipment in the trailer in one piece at the end of the night, hopefully after a top ten finish.  The night was on track to be just that when the race reached the halfway point.  

 

Keen had just turned his quickest lap of the event when a midrace caution slowed the field.  Just after the ensuing restart, the night derailed.  He lost power and coasted to a stop on the front straight.  He was officially credited with a 21st place finish.

 

“Not the night I was hoping for.  I felt an extreme vibration just after the restart and the motor started losing power.  Thought we had our third top ten at Lincoln for sure, but it wasn’t meant to be.  I’m hoping whatever happened isn’t too severe.  That’s the only bullet we have right now.“, Keen commented

 

Unfortunately for Keen, a closer examination back at the shop the following day revealed the internal engine damage was severe.  

 

Up Next

 

Given the significant engine damage and the fact there are only five races remaining on his schedule, it appears the 2022 season has likely come to an end for Keen.  That is, barring someone stepping forward to offer him assistance in the form of an engine or a ride.

For any new driver, there is nothing more valuable than seat time.  It’s a simple equation; seat time equals laps, and laps equals learning plus experience.

 

As a rookie in the 358 sprint car pits, Kyle Keen can attest to that.  Every time he unloads his car and hits the track, the notebook on the car expands and the driver’s own mental notebook grows as well.

 

Keen’s plan last weekend was to get two more nights under his belt, but unfortunately Mother Nature took away one of the two opportunities Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway.  Saturday, it was off to Lincoln Speedway under clear skies.

 

July 30:  Lincoln Speedway / Abbottstown, PA

     [31 cars, Heat 6th (6), B-main 3rd (4th), A-main 18th (23)]

 

Keen lined up 6th for his heat race, the result of an unfriendly pill draw.  The opening lap didn’t go his way and he slipped back to 7th, but the Carlisle, PA native recovered and found his groove.  By the completion of the second lap, Keen was in 5th and looking for more.

 

When the dust settled, Keen came home 6th, missing the transfer to the A-main by one spot in the Fine Line Auto Body / Keen Parts / Doubling Gap Ranch / Shetron Auction & Equipment, LLC. / Wicked Dog Grille / Heishman Racing Fuels / Wicked Cushion / DL Lehman Construction, LLC. / GearHead Coffee / Jeremy Zarfos Photography / Coyle’s Lawn Maintenance / One Nine Design, Kyle Keen Motorsports No.17k.

 

“The car was good enough to run 5th or maybe even 4th, but I missed a couple corners and slipped backed to 6th.  I learned what I need to work on there.“, Keen shared.

 

Keen lined up outside row two for the B-main, his last shot to make the show.  The top four finishers would transfer to the night’s 20-lap finale.  He held the final transfer spot firmly for the first eight laps, then with two laps remaining secured some insurance by grabbing the 3rd spot away from Tylar Rutherford.

 

Not all learning occurs on the track.  Between the consolation event and the main event, Keen and his team discussed a lot of information and made their setup decisions for the last twenty laps of the night.  Sometimes teams learn their decisions were right, sometimes they learn their decisions were wrong…but they always learn.  That’s the important part.

 

From his 23rd starting spot in the A-main, Keen invested all twenty laps in determining what he and his team would learn on this night.  The end result after slow and steady forward progress was an 18th place finish that came with a lot of positives.

 

“The finish may not show it, but I made big, big gains understanding my foot work in the car on entry, and my crew went to work and got the car to stick harder. It was certainly a good night even though the results don’t show it.  A lot of what we learned tonight will help us at Williams Grove too.  It was a confidence booster night, and we are looking forward to next weekend!”, an energized Keen commented.

Kyle Keen Motorsports will roll into Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night, August 5th, for a first-of-its-kind Match Race for the 358 sprint cars, offering a total purse of over $20,000.  Per Williams Grove’s website, the much anticipated Match Race, including matched sponsorship funds from the speedway, will go 25-laps in distance while paying $2,021 to win and $696 to start.
