Austin Berry Wins Thriller at Port Royal Speedway for First Career Super Late Model Victory!

The Little Team That Could…DID!

For years, Austin Berry was accustomed to winning.  He won in go karts.  He won in legends cars.  He didn’t just win now and then.  He won a lot.  Almost six years ago he stepped up to super late models and the wins stopped coming.  Knowing how competitive the division is, it certainly wasn’t a surprise, but after a few years, the moments of doubt began to creep in.  At times he doubted himself.  At times he doubted his equipment.  Would he ever win again?  

 

Through it all, Berry has been working hard and learning everything he can, trying to get back to victory lane in a very tough division.  He’s been doing it in and around the Central Pennsylvania region by competing at some of the toughest tracks, against some of the toughest weekly competition in the country.  Saturday night June 12th, 2021, all of that hard work finally paid off.  Berry won a nail-biting, thrilling 25-lap A-main, defeating top regional names like Feathers, Flinner, Stuhler, Lathroum and Rine.

 

A field of 32 cars entered competition Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway and were divided into four, 8-lap heat races, with lineups set by a random draw.  The top five finishers would transfer directly to the A-main, but more importantly, the top three finishers would be included in the handicapping system to line up the top 12 starting positions in the night’s feature event.

 

Berry started 3rd in his heat race, but slipped back to 4th and out of a handicap spot in the early going.  He was able to find his rhythm, improve his line, and chase down Mike Lupfer to reclaim 3rd on lap 6.  He held that position to the end and claimed one of the handicap transfer spots.

 

Troubles earlier in the season had Berry sitting lower in the track points than hoped, but it benefitted them on this night.  As a result of the handicapping system, the Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, Addicted2DirtPR.com, Nathan Berry Beef Farm, A&C Racing Engines, JDS Racing, Ontime Body & Graphic, Swift Springs, Penske Racing Shocks, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, VP Racing Fuels, Rocket Chassis XR1 took the green in the 25-lap feature from the second position.

 

Austin was able to surge to the lead at the drop of the green and build a comfortable lead in the opening laps.  Meanwhile, Trevor Feathers, Colton Flinner and Gary Stuhler, who had started 8th, 9th and 10th respectively, were beginning their charge toward the front.  Feathers was able to move into 2nd on a lap 7 restart.  He momentarily showed himself on the inside of Berry, but couldn’t complete the pass.  Meanwhile, Flinner moved past Stuhler into 3rd.  The three pursued Berry feverishly over the remaining laps, swapping positions among themselves on a couple occasions but remaining within striking distance of Berry throughout the battles.  

 

The final caution occurred with eight laps remaining.  After that the battles only got more intense, and far too close for Berry’s comfort.  Choosing his lines carefully in an effort to balance his own ability to drive hard, while playing some defense by taking away the momentum of those in pursuit, Berry used every inch of the Speed Palace, and then some.  He made contact with the outside wall with his spoiler on at least one occasion., bending it slightly and knocking out a support brace.  

 

Over the final three laps, Berry, Feathers and Flinner ran a torrid pace “under a blanket” as they say.  The white flag waived and the front pair entered turn one side by side, with Flinner hot on their tail.  Berry was able to get sole possession of the lead by the time they reached turn three and he dove to the bottom to take away Feather’s chance at a slide job.  Meanwhile, Flinner turned up the wick on his machine, hammering the top side hard to get a run off turn four to the checkered flag.  Stuhler continued to lurk close behind the trio, looking for a gap to shoot through.  With some quick thinking, Berry allowed his chariot to slide up across turn four, forcing Flinner to check up just enough for the ABR No.86 to speed away with lead for good.   Berry won by a slim 0.169 seconds and the top 4 flashed across the line in a span of just 0.639 seconds.  Feathers, Flinner and Stuhler had collectively passed 18 cars to finish 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively, but none of them was able to get by Austin Berry.  

 

A understandably excited, emotional and exhausted Berry climbed from his Rocket Chassis XR1, climbed on the roof, and let loose a celebration that had been building within him for six years.  “That was unbelievable.  That was the hardest 25 laps I have ever driven around this place.  I am absolutely worn out,” Berry said.

You’ve got the Dream going on at Eldora and you show up at Port Royal for a regular $3000 to win show and there is 33 of the best cars in the country in the pits“, Berry explained.  “We live 10 minutes from this place and we probably would have won one of these things sooner if we went somewhere else.  My dad and I always said if we were going to do this and win, we wanted to race against the best and that’s why we keep coming here“.  

 

Berry wanted to say thank you to a lot of people who got him through the past six years and onto the victory lane stage Saturday night.  “I’ve mentioned his name a lot lately but I can’t say enough about how much we appreciate Jim Stevens & JDS Racing.  Jim has accelerated our learning curve and put us in a position to make better decisions“.

 

I also need to thank a couple good friends who stepped forward to help us this year because they believed in what we were building here at ABR.  I want to send a huge thank you to Devin Hart for sharing knowledge, helping us out with some long hours at the shop, lending us parts when we were in a bind, and leading us to our relationship with JDS Racing”, Berry shared.  

 

“I want to mention Devin’s crew too because pretty much the whole KHK Motorsports team showed up one night when we had to put an entire car together after we crashed our old one at Selinsgrove.  There were so many people in the shop, we were tripping over each other trying to get that car done by the weekend”, Berry laughed as he recalled the long night.  

 

The other friend who helped us in a big way this season is Tyler Ritchey.  When our primary motor had an issue early in the season, we were going to be out of commission for a long stretch due to parts delays, but Tyler called us and insisted we borrow his motor so we could keep racing and not sit on the sidelines.  He wasn’t racing it this year, so it was the way he wanted to help us“, Berry explained.

 

Berry concluded his expressions of thanks saying, “Of course I also want to thank Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop who came on board this year, and all the others who help out silently without asking for anything in return.  We couldn’t do this without each and every one of them.  We can always use the help and support.  We would love to grow our resources to be able to run more.  You can’t get better if you’re not racing“.

 

ABR certainly has been slowly building momentum this season.  Saturday night may have been the win that broke the ice.  Austin Berry might get used to winning again.

Reinhardt and Capitol Renegade Team Making Gains

There’s No Substitute for Seat Time

As the All Star Circuit of Champions (ASCoC) prepared to make a swing through Illinois and Wisconsin just after the Memorial Day holiday, Kyle Reinhardt reflected on his first experience with Midwest bullrings just two weeks prior.  Those nights had provided some valuable information for both the driver and the team.  It was time to apply what they had learned and put themselves to the test once again.

 

6/3:  Fairbury American Legion Speedway, Fairbury, IL

      (Qualifying 5th overall/2nd in group, Heat 4th,  A-main 17th)

 

The series rolled into Fairbury American Legion Speedway (FALS) in Illinois to kick off the 4-race swing that was co-sanctioned with the IRA (Interstate Racing Association).  The event drew a field of 32 cars, including Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade No.91 team.  Right out of the gate they showed progress, recording the 5th quickest overall lap in time trials.  The lap was good for 2nd in Reinhardt’s group.  

 

Reinhardt’s qualifying effort was very good but being second quickest in your group is often a tough spot.  He would need to win the heat race to control his own destiny and make the dash redraw.  Otherwise, he would need to rely on others and circumstances to fall his way to make the dash.  He took the green from the 3rd starting spot in heat number three but came home 4th, missing a shot at the dash.  According to the All Star rule book regarding the dash redraw, “The Heat Winner then the Quickest Transfer from each Heat AND then the top Two (2) from overall time trials that also advance to the A-main through their heat race will, random draw for dash starting position”.  

 

The Neptune City, NJ native rolled off 15th in the A-main, but wasn’t able to mount any forward charge.  Reinhardt took the checkered flag in 17th and then offered his brief insights on the night.  “We were much better in time trials tonight, so I’m happy about that.  We just missed it (the setup) in the feature“, he shared.   

 

6/4:  Wilmot Speedway, Wilmot, WI

      (Qualifying 17th overall/6th in group, Heat 5th,  A-main 11th)

 

The tour ventured north into Wisconsin on Friday for stop number two of the four ASCoC/IRA events.  39 teams entered competition, setting up 5 qualifying and heat race groups for the night.  Reinhardt’s qualifying effort was a respectable 17th overall, however it was only good enough for 6th in his group, which meant he would have a little tougher road to a good finish at the end of the night.

 

Step one of the road back was checked off when Kyle managed to advance from 6th to 5th in his heat race, just making the transfer and putting himself into the A-main for the night.  Reinhardt started 17th in the 30-lap feature event and immediately went to work on step two of the road back, charging forward to reach the top 10 by lap 8.  Midway through the event, a torrid battle among several cars saw Reinhardt slip back to 12th but he continued to battle and ultimately cross the finish line in 11th.  Given the way the evening started, the finish was definitely good enough to consider step two of the road back complete. 

 

6/5:  Plymouth Dirt Track, Plymouth, WI

      (Qualifying 2nd overall/2nd in group, Heat 5th,  Dash 3rd, A-main 8th)

 

Rolling another two hours further north, the traveling band of racers unloaded on the Sheboygan County Fairground to race at Plymouth Dirt Track, a one-third mile bullring located an hour north of Milwaukee.  It was yet another new venue for Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team, which was the norm thus far in 2021, their first season touring with the series.  They were one of 36 teams who signed in to take a shot at the $6,000 winner’s share that was up for grabs in the 30-lap main event.

 

Once again, Reinhardt posted the 2nd quickest time in his group, but this time it was also good enough for 2nd overall in time trials.  Recalling the dash redraw rule mentioned earlier, this meant good news for the Rookie of the Year candidate and his crew.  They were locked into the dash, as long as they were able to transfer in their heat race.  That meant Reinhardt needed to finish in the top 5 of his heat race, which he accomplished.

 

Like his most recent opportunity to participate in the dash redraw, Reinhardt would have a little luck shine on him.  He drew the pole of dash number one, giving himself a good shot at starting on the pole of the A-main if he could fend off his competitors in the 4-lap dash.  Bill Balog, who has many more laps at the Wisconsin track, managed to get by Reinhardt to win the dash, while Kyle settled for a 3rd place finish.

 

Starting 5th in the feature event, Reinhardt was competitive and engaged in a multi-car battle inside the top 10 throughout the 30-lap event.  In the closing laps, the No.91 of Reinhardt faded slightly but still logged a solid 8th place finish.

 

6/6:  Angell Park Speedway, Sun Prairie, WI

      (Qualifying 19th, Heat 7th,  B-main 2nd, A-main 19th)

 

To conclude the 4-race series, 26 teams rolled into Angell Park Speedway, just over an hour west of Milwaukee.  To open the night, Reinhardt registered the 19th quickest time in the field.  Given their improved qualifying efforts on the bullrings so far on the trip, the result was disappointing but it was another opportunity to learn.

 

The struggles continued in the first heat race.  Reinhardt started and finished 7th, landing himself in the B-main.  On the bright side, he was able to race from 4th to 2nd in the B-main, giving himself and the team the 20th starting spot in the A-main.  The tough night continued, with Reinhardt ultimately riding home 19th.

 

Overall we improved nightly, until Sunday, so overall we’re happy.  We time-trialed better on the smaller tracks than we had been.  I feel like I definitely improved at that“, an encouraged Reinhardt commented.  He continued recapping the week, “We’re figuring stuff out night by night and racing a little better at these types of places too”.

 

Looking ahead to Ohio Speedweek, Reinhardt thinks his time on the Midwest bullrings the past month will pay off.  “These tracks were slick to a curb.  Slick is something we’ve been struggling with, so these races showed we’re heading the right direction.  We’ll carry that into Ohio where most of the tracks are slick as well.”

Newlin Headed Back to Williams Grove Friday for 358 Summer Series

Efforts Continue to Stabilize New 410 Chassis

With no 358 sprint car racing on his schedule over the past weekend, there was only one race on the docket for Zach Newlin.  He strapped into the Burke Motorsports/Grove Financial & Associates/Dillman Hauling, LLC. 410 sprint car at Port Royal Speedway on Saturday night.  

 

The night looked to be off to a promising start when Newlin registered the 5th quickest lap among the field of 19 cars during hot laps.  Given the challenges the team has faced as they figure out what their new Maxim wants, it was an encouraging sign.  Unfortunately, the optimism didn’t last.


An unlucky pill draw had Newlin starting in the back of the 2nd heat and he was unable to move forward in his 10-lap qualifying event.  Despite everyone’s best efforts, things didn’t improve for the feature.  After a handful of laps, the team made the decision to bring the No.54 in and save their resources for another night.  It’s been a tough start to the 410 season for this group.  All teams encounter struggles like this at some point and they will find their way through it.  

 

Next up, Newlin will climb aboard the Mansberger Motorsports No.21m again on June 11th for a 358 Sprint Car Summer Series race at Williams Grove Speedway, where he sits 7th in the season points.  That will be followed (tentatively) by another outing at Port Royal Speedway in the Burke Motorsports No.54 on June 12th.  Follow the social media outlets listed below for news and updates!

Austin Berry and Team Working Hard to Keep Their Rhythm

Appetite for Success Growing Even Stronger

As Austin Berry and the rest of the ABR team rolled their No.86 out of the trailer Saturday night, they had the same goal as every other time they had unloaded this season:  keep working, keep learning, and keep moving forward.  Something is different lately though.  The expectations are justifiably higher.  

 

Saturday, June 5th brought ABR to Port Royal Speedway.  It was Camera and Autograph night for the fans, which is enjoyable for the teams as well and gets the night off to a fun start.  Austin enjoyed meeting and chatting with numerous fans.

 

Three heats were set by pill draw for the 29 super late model teams signed in to compete.  Berry started 4th in heat number three in the Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, Addicted2DirtPR.com, Nathan Berry Beef Farm, A&C Racing Engines, JDS Racing, Ontime Body & Graphic, Swift Springs, Penske Racing Shocks, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, VP Racing Fuels, Rocket Chassis XR1.  He quickly jumped into 2nd and appeared capable of challenging for the top spot early on.  Following a heated battle, about halfway through the 10-lap qualifying race, Berry lost 2nd to Dan Stone.  The battle seemed to take Berry a little out of his rhythm and before the checkered flag dropped, he lost one more spot and finished in 4th.

 

I had a 2nd place car and made a couple poor decisions that landed me in 4th.  Nothing to do but learn from it and keep digging“, Berry commented after the heat race.

 

The qualifying result equated to Austin starting a little deeper in the feature lineup than desired.  In the opening laps, Berry started to push forward from his 12th starting spot.  There wasn’t a moment to let down his guard as the 25-lap main event wore on.  There was always someone challenging for position to Berry’s inside or outside.  When the dust had settled, he had slipped back a few positions, officially logging a 16th place finish.

 

After crawling from his car, Berry shared his thoughts on the night.  “We just missed it.  We were good early but not late.  That’s the opposite of our usual night, so maybe that’s progress.  We just need to put it all together now.”  He continued, “We’re starting to build a good notebook now and making finer adjustments for each place we go.”  Berry went on to express his thanks to JDS Racing and Jim Stevens, Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop and Berry’s Siding and Seamless Gutter for everything they do to make it possible to compete.

 

ABR achieved two of it’s three goals this week.  They worked hard and they learned a lot.  They just didn’t move forward, at least not on the track.  It’s likely though that in the big picture, they did.

 

Let’s remember Albert Einstein’s words:  “Failure is success in progress.

Berry Adds Another Top 10 to Resume

Building Momentum Through Attention to Detail

One major component of the equation for a race team to improve is simple, race more.  Another important part of the equation is travel.  Race a variety of tracks.  So far in 2021, compared to recent years, Austin Berry and his team are checking off those items, and it shows.  Of course, the equipment, knowledge, and decisions behind the wheel are big factors as well, and ABR has also seen improvements in those areas this season.  When you plug all of those into the equation, you get consistency and confidence.

 

After a week off, Berry and his team were anxious to get back to the track but rain forced the postponement of the Turk Burket Tribute race at Bedford Speedway in Pennsylvania.  Fortunately, the event was moved from May 28th to May 31st, which still fit the team’s schedule.  ABR was one of 20 teams to sign in to compete on Memorial Day.  Bedford Speedway is a half-mile oval located on the fairgrounds in Bedford, PA and it is a place where Berry doesn’t have many laps.  That means little experience or notes to rely on.  

 

After the hot lap sessions, Austin knew the car wasn’t quite where it needed to be, but there was no time to make changes before time trials, so he made some adjustments to the one thing he did have time to change, his driving approach.  It paid off.  Going out last for time trials, which is usually a disadvantage due to deteriorating track conditions, Berry registered the 8th quickest time overall and 6th best in his group.

 

The lineups for the heats were ‘heads-up’ based on the fastest time within their group, meaning the fastest cars started up front.  That meant Berry would start 6th in heat two.  After making some adjustments to his Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, Addicted2DirtPR.com, Nathan Berry Beef Farm, A&C Racing Engines, JDS Racing, Ontime Body & Graphic, Swift Springs, Penske Racing Shocks, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, VP Racing Fuels, Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86, he proceeded to post a strong run in the heat, moving forward two spots and finishing 4th in the stacked 8-lap qualifying race.

 

In the night’s 40-lap feature event, Berry started 8th and moved forward early.  He held strong in 7th, often using the top side of the track, trying to find his way into the top 5.  On lap 7, Matt Cosner was able to slip by, dropping Berry back to 8th.  For the bulk of the race, Austin held that position, right on the heels of 7th.  Unfortunately, the track began to take rubber, meaning there was a narrow line with the best traction, and little room to pass.  Following a mid-race restart, Berry got a little loose and gave up a spot to Chuck Clise.  Ultimately, he would ride home in 9th, logging a solid night overall for ABR.

 

We have learned a ton already this year.  We’ve changed a lot of things and so far, it’s all led us in the right direction.  We have great supporters who have helped us in a lot of ways.  Jim Stevens at JDS Racing has really helped us learn.  All of those things have enabled us to move past some things that have consumed our time and energy in the past, so now we are able to focus on the next level of improvement“, Berry explained.

 

He continued, “In the pits and at the shop, we’re keeping better notes to make better decisions.  We’re changing our approach on tires because they wear differently when the car handles betterI’m learning behind the wheel too.  A lot of folks don’t know how many years I spent racing in karts and legends on pavement.  I’m still working on how my approach behind the wheel should change on dirt.  We’re going the right direction but we still have a long way to go.  Now is when we have to work even harder.  We’re really close.

 

Austin Berry Racing will return to to their home track, Port Royal Speedway, the next two weekends.  This Saturday, June 5th, is Camera and Autograph Night, which means the pits will be open to all ticket holders for about an hour prior to racing.  Be sure to come early, stop by the pits to say hello, and take a photo with Austin!  Check the speedway’s social media for specific times.  June 12th at Port Royal will be Dollar Dog Night and senior citizens are admitted at a discounted price.

Zach Newlin Gaining 410 Experience Against Tough Competition

Seat Time Equals Learning

Despite 20 years of karting, 305 sprints and 358 sprints, Zach Newlin was only 12 races into his 410 sprint car career when he walked into the pit area on Monday for the rain-delayed Weikert Memorial at Port Royal Speedway.  Another race means more experience.  He’s not gaining it the easy way either.  Half of those previous events were against the All Stars or the World of Outlaws.

 

The $29,000 to win All Star Circuit of Champions sanctioned event at ‘The Speed Palace’ on Memorial Day would serve as Newlin’s 13th career 410 start, and yet again it would be against the All Stars.     

 

In his laps against the clock in the Burke Motorsports/Grove Financial & Associates/Dillman Hauling, LLC. No.54, Zach Daddy was able to record a very respectable lap, timing 26th quickest out of the 43 cars that attempted qualifying.  The effort provided him with a starting spot on the front row of the second heat race.  Since the format for the special event uses a system that awards drivers points during qualifying and heat races, his only objective was to stay up front, or very close to it.  Points awarded in the heat races are based on where you start vs. where you finish, commonly known in the sport as ‘passing points’.  Early in his heat race, Newlin was holding his own, running in the top 3 against stout competition.  As the race progressed, he slipped a few more spots, ultimately finishing 9th and capturing far fewer points than he was aiming for.  

 

My lack of experience in a 410 cost me there.  A few of those spots are on me“, Newlin admitted.  With no time to dwell on it, he tucked the lessons learned away and prepared for the B-main.  Only the top four finishers would transfer to the A-main.  Newlin knew his 13th starting spot in the last chance qualifying race would be tough to overcome but laps are laps.  Seat time is seat time.  It’s an opportunity to learn.  He managed to work his way forward as far as 9th for a handful of laps, then eventually settled for a 10th place finish in the 20-car field.  It wasn’t good enough to make the A-main but it was progress for the team in only their second outing of the 2021 season.

Reinhardt Shifts Focus to Upper Midwest

Team Ready to Put Frustrating Weekend in PA Behind Them

Kyle Reinhardt was looking forward to getting back home after two weeks on the road.  With three races slated on familiar turf, it would be a good opportunity to put together a few good outings.  It didn’t all play out as he and the Capitol Renegade team had hoped though.  Mother Nature stepped in and took away the shows at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday and Port Royal Speedway on Saturday, then she tried to get the weekend sweep by raining out Port Royal’s Sunday show as well.  Thankfully, the Memorial Day holiday provided a backup plan that allowed Sunday’s show to be held a day late.

 

Port Royal Speedway:  Port Royal, PA  (5/31:  Qualifying 19th, Heat 6th,  B-main 18th)

 

The sun finally appeared on Memorial Day, allowing the big half mile known as ‘The Speed Palace’ in Central Pennsylvania to run it’s annual Bob Weikert Memorial, paying $29,000 to win.  The event is a points-based race where teams earn points throughout qualifying.  At the conclusion of time trials and heats, points are totaled and the top 20 teams are locked into the A-main.

 

Unfortunately for Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team, the sunny weather left them just as frustrated as the weekend rain.  Kyle registered the 19th quickest time of the 43 teams who went under the clock.  Following the mid-pack qualifying run, which garnered Reinhardt 96 points, the team went to work making numerous changes to the No.91.  Reinhardt was slated to start 4th in his heat, and given the passing points format being used for the event, moving forward would be critical.  From the drop of the green, Kyle couldn’t get the forward bite he needed and instead slipped backwards, finishing 6th and only gaining 62 points.

 

The points tally left him a mere 7 points below the count that would have locked him into the main event.  Instead, he would have the 4th starting spot in the B-main.  Just two laps into the 12-lap last chance race, the Neptune City, NJ native’s left front tire went flat, causing him to spin in turn one.  He would restart from the rear of the field, but was unable to recover from the setback and did not make the starting field for the finale.

 

Understandably frustrated at the conclusion of the long holiday weekend, Reinhardt was a man of few words.  “We are still struggling on slick surfaces.  It’s definitely frustrating, especially at a place I have run really well in the past.  We will keep moving forward and keep trying to get better“, he shared.

Kyle and the Capitol Renegade team will be heading west for a swing through Illinois and Wisconsin with the All Star Circuit of Champions.  Thursday, June 3rd the tour will stop at Fairbury American Legion Speedway, known to many as FALS, where the winner will walk away with $5,000.  From there, the series will march north into Wisconsin for three weekend shows that will each pay $6,000 to the winner.  Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, WI will provide the action on Friday night and Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, WI will do so on Saturday night.  The finale will be held at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI on Sunday night.

Reinhardt Logs Top 10 to Open Indiana Swing with All Stars

Lucrative Events on Home Turf Up Next

Racing is no different than anything else in life.  You must always keep learning to keep moving forward.  In his rookie campaign with the All Star Circuit of Champions, Kyle Reinhardt and his team are being reminded of that on a regular basis.  Some lessons are fun to learn, others…not so much.  Regardless, the Neptune City native is eager to learn, improve and achieve consistent success. 

 

Circle City Raceway: Indianapolis, IN

     (5/20:  Qualifying 30th/6th in group, Heat 4th, A-main 9th)

 

The 2021 All Star Indiana Swing kicked off at Circle City Raceway, a brand new facility just outside Indianapolis.  Given the importance of time trials, night one of the four-race series in the Hoosier State didn’t get off to a great start for Kyle Reinhardt.  He registered the 30th quickest lap of 31 entries.  The time placed him 6th in his group, which meant he would need to advance at least one spot in his heat race to lock directly into the A-main.  Reinhardt was able to do one better, working his way into 4th place by the time the checkered flag waved on qualifying.

 

After starting deep in the field in 17th and only gaining a couple positions by the halfway point, Reinhardt showed his never-give-up attitude by running his best laps of the race and surging into the top 10 in the final 5 circuits.  It was a nice recovery and a positive ending to the night.  Reinhardt commented, “Took me a little bit but we got rolling late in the feature and made up some ground.”  

 

     (5/21: Qualifying 26th, Heat 9th,  A-main 20th)

 

Night two in Indianapolis saw 30 teams sign in for competition.  They found a heavier track waiting for them than Friday night had delivered.  Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team would find themselves working from behind after turning in the 26th quickest time under the clock.  Starting 9th in his heat race, Reinhardt found the team’s post-qualifying adjustments did not make the difference they needed to move forward.  He crossed the line in 9th, relegating him to the B-main.  

 

Unfortunately, Reinhardt’s 8th place start in the B-main turned into a 9th place finish.  The team elected to take their first provisional of the season to start 25th in the A-main.  By the halfway point, Kyle had made forward progress for the first time all night, moving up 7 spots to 18th.  As he was working a pass for 17th, two other competitors made contact, with one of them getting into Reinhardt.  While his Capitol Renegade No.91 never stopped, Kyle did lose a few positions and it became clear after the restart that the car was not the same and he was unable to regain the lost positions.  In the end, Reinhardt was credited with a 20th place finish.

 

Reinhardt put the team’s struggles thus far on the Indiana swing squarely on his own shoulders.  “I have got to get better at running time trial laps at the smaller places.  These places call for a different style than the smooth style that works on the bigger tracks.  It makes for a much tougher night when you don’t time well.

 

Gas City I-69 Speedway:  Gas City, IN

     (Qualifying 22nd/2nd in group, Heat 7th,  A-main 18th)

 

The teams moved just over an hour north on Saturday to race at the Gas City quarter-mile oval.  Driver Kyle Reinhardt’s focus on his qualifying effort on the bull ring seemed to pay off a little.  He registered the 2nd quickest time in his group and 22nd overall of the 32 cars that went under the clock.  The effort provided him with the 3rd starting spot in his heat race, from which the top 5 would transfer directly to the night’s A-main, giving the All Star Rookie of the Year candidate good odds of making the show.

 

Just went things were looking a little brighter for the New Oxford, PA resident, the cars at the front of the heat race got together on the start, spinning and collecting Reinhardt, who had no way to avoid the pair.  He lined up 7th for the complete restart but was not able to recover the lost ground, ultimately finishing 7th in the heat race.  

 

Dealt a 7th starting spot in the B-main, Reinhardt was determined to get in the show.  He charged into a transfer spot by the finish of the 12-lap event to accomplish his goal.  He would start 24th in the A-main but they were in.  Racing from deep in the pack always has the added challenges of ‘dirty air’ and traffic, but it’s also possible to race into the top 10 from the back, as Reinhardt has already proven this season.  Although he did move forward in the feature event, the Capitol Renegade No.91 just wasn’t quite good enough on this night and Reinhardt settled for an 18th place finish.

 

Kokomo Speedway: Kokomo, IN

     (Qualifying 25th/7th in group, Heat 9th,  B-main 21st)

 

Not surprisingly, the $26,000 to win Indiana finale at Kokomo Speedway drew the highest car count of the 4-race series, with 42 teams signing in to take their shot at the big money.  Reinhardt recorded the 25th quickest lap overall on the banked, quarter-mile oval, but was in the bottom half of his group, which meant he would start 7th in heat number two.  With only 4 cars transferring to the A-main from each of 5 heat races, his work was cut out for him.  A spin on lap 2 after contact required him to restart at the back of the field and made the job even more difficult.  Following the setback, Kyle was unable to gain positions in the 8-lap heat race, which translated to a 21st starting spot in the B-main.  Unfortunately, he didn’t fare any better in the B-main.  Reinhardt was unable to make significant forward progress and did not transfer to the A-main. 

 

Following his first career Indiana swing, a somewhat frustrated but determined Kyle Reinhardt summarized it this way:  “We show speed at times but we are struggling with consistency.  We will find it.”  He concluded by once again referring to time trials as the key to improving their consistency, sharing “Next week we’re headed back to PA to race.  I’m excited to get back home to familiar turf.  Getting a good lap down will be key.”

Newlin Battles Through Tough Sprint Car Weekend

Wheelman Determined to Rebound as Busy Summer Kicks Off in Pennsylvania

As is often the case during the 2021 racing season, Zach Newlin kicked off this past weekend by strapping into the Mansberger Motorsports No.21m 358 sprint car at Williams Grove Speedway.  This weekend was going to be a little different though, as he was also scheduled to make his 410 sprint car season debut the following night at Port Royal Speedway.  Unfortunately for Newlin, the weekend was going to be anything but typical for the wheelman who has established a track record of success.

 

Friday night, May 21st started off pretty normal with 21 358 sprint car teams signed in at Williams Grove Speedway, which meant the usual three 8-lap heats from which all cars would qualify for the night’s A-main but only the top 4 finishers would make the redraw.  

 

Zach started 5th in the second heat and was able to miraculously miss a hard 2-car crash in turn one on the start, somehow squeaking between the crash and the outside guardrail to avoid contact.  On the ensuing restart, Newlin made a strong move into the third position in turn 3.  He would go on to ride home in third to lock himself into the redraw.  

 

That part of the night seemed pretty normal.  The redraw results placed Newlin in the 8th starting spot for the 20-lap feature.  From the drop of the green, Newlin sensed the handling was off in the Mansberger Motorsports 21m.  On lap 8, things went from bad to worse and it became apparent the issue was with the right rear tire.  The tire went completely flat, forcing Newlin to the pits.  He was unable to return.  The team determined the cause of the tire failure was a bit unusual.  The tire was not cut or punctured; the valve stem had failed.  These types of things are just part of the sport, but it certainly wasn’t the norm for Newlin to end the night early in the pits.  He was credited with an 18th place finish.

 

Next up for Mansberger Motorsports will be the 358 Sprint Car Summer Series event on June 11th at Williams Grove Speedway.

 

All Zach Daddy could do was accept Friday night’s results and move on to Saturday at Port Royal.  After a couple prior unsuccessful attempts to kick off their season, Burke Motorsports was finally able to roll their beautiful orange and blue No.54 Grove Financial & Associates, Dillman Hauling, LLC., Heather Sims Realtor, T&M Homebuilders, Kirby Kitner Excavating, Walker Performance Filtration, Sander Engineering, DMI, out of the trailer to go racing in 2021.  Earlier in May, weather and a family situation had thwarted two prior attempts to race.

 

Zach and the team would need to jump right into the deep end of the pool with their brand new Maxim Chassis.  The format called for time trials, which meant there would be no chance to shake down the new car, other than the few circuits he would get in hot laps.

 

For those who aren’t familiar, even if they are from the same manufacturer, no two frames behave the same.  Each one has its own personality and the team must learn what it wants to get the most speed out of it.  

 

When he signed in for the night, Newlin had some luck at the pill draw.  He drew the lowest pill, giving him the first shot at the track for qualifying.  Time trials quickly provided feedback on the new car, indicating it was not at its best using a familiar setup they had used in the past on other cars.  They were at the bottom of the charts and had work to do.

 

The 24 cars on hand then participated in three 8-lap heat races, which were lined up based on their times in qualifying, with the quickest times up front.  Despite making numerous, significant changes to the car prior to their heat race, Zach was unable to move forward from his 9th starting spot in the heat race.  Upon his return to the pits, the team went back to work again.  They discovered an issue in the rear suspension and were able to resolve it before the feature.

 

Given their 24th starting position, the team’s plan in the A-main was to assess the car 5 laps into the event.  If Newlin was able to pass cars and move forward, he would continue to race, but if not, they would call it a night and save their resources for another night.  While the issue they resolved prior to the feature was definitely a big step in the right direction, the car was still not where it needed to be, so he called it a night 5 laps into the race, resulting in an official 24th place finish.

 

Having lost a couple opportunities earlier in May to begin to learn what this new car wants to make it fast, Newlin and the Burke Motorsports team will need a couple more nights to start to figure out their new piece.  Even the majority of this particular night was spent resolving a suspension issue, which means they don’t really yet know if the changes they made earlier in the evening would have worked had that issue not existed.

 

That’s how this sport is.  Three steps forward, two steps backwards.  As a team, you can’t lose sight of the fact that the net result is forward progress.  Fans want and expect quick success but it takes time for a team and a driver to make a car fast, especially when each has only a dozen 410 sprint car starts on their resume.  Both Newlin and Burke Motorsports have been very successful in their past racing endeavors.  In time, they will find success in a 410 as well.

Kyle Reinhardt Scores First Career All Star Victory

NJ Native Pockets $8k for the Illinois Triumph; Logs Top 10 at I-96 Speedway in Michigan

It was a moment he believed he would have someday, but nobody could guarantee it.  You just need to have the opportunity and you need to put in the work, then maybe it’ll happen.  

 

Standing in victory lane in Joliet, IL with a broad smile on his face, Kyle Reinhardt thanked Wayne Quackenbush & Capitol Renegade, his parents & family, his girlfriend, Jeff McCall and everyone else who had helped him pursue his dream.  Collectively they are the reason he was able to give up a career as an engineer to be a full-time racer.  It’s a high risk, high reward choice.  Although there is good money that can be won in a race car, in this case the reward is also about achieving something you are passionate about.  Feeling that satisfaction and sense of accomplishment that stems from your lifelong vision.  Kyle’s is a fascinating story.  There’s no yellow brick road.  Just a trail of hard work, preparation and creating opportunities over the years.  

 

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.  First we need to make a stop in Michigan.

 

I-96 Speedway: Odessa, MI (Qualifying 13th, Heat 2nd,  A-main 10th)

32 teams signed in to compete in the $8,500 to win Mace Thomas Classic on Friday night at the 4-tenths mile Michigan oval.  The format divided the field into 4 groups for time trials and heats.  Reinhardt was the 17th car to hit the track under the clock and he turned in the 13th quickest time overall, good for 4th in his group.

 

The qualifying effort placed him on the pole of heat three, from which he jumped out to a comfortable lead in the opening laps.  A caution with two laps complete bunched the field.  Second place Paul McMahan made the most of the restart opportunity, diving under Reinhardt and claiming the lead exiting turn 2.  While the Capitol Renegade No.91 was good, it wasn’t quite good enough to get back by McMahan.  Reinhardt settled for a runner-up finish that transferred him directly to the main event, but there was still a bit of disappointment.  A win would have provided a guaranteed top-10 starting spot in the A-main but more importantly, an opportunity in a dash to start even closer to the front of the field.  Instead, he would start the night’s main event in 12th.  

 

Your whole night changes so much based on each position in qualifying and heats.  You have to be on your game all the time.“, Reinhardt commented.  

 

When the green flag waved on the main event, Reinhardt had his eyes set on a top-10, or maybe even a top-5, finish.  Before one lap could be completed, Reinhardt was already passing for 10th when he suddenly found himself facing the wrong direction on the back stretch when a competitor made contact with the front of his J&J Chassis.  The good news was there was no damage, but the bad news was Reinhardt would have to restart the event at the back of the field, in the 24th position.

 

Racing from the back of the field can be tough.  There’s a lot of traffic and ‘dirty air’ that can make passing difficult.  That appeared to be the case for Reinhardt over the first dozen laps.  He found himself still riding in 21st when the caution appeared on lap 12.  On this night though, Reinhardt’s car was up to the challenge.  As the remainder of the 30-lap race unfolded, Kyle made a charge, methodically working his way forward.  When the final caution of the event appeared on lap 19, he found himself in 15th.  It was more of the same when the green lights flashed back on for the final 11 laps.  Reinhardt continued his steady push forward, advancing another position every few laps.  It culminated with a pass for 10th on the final circuit.

 

While the official results listed Reinhardt as +2 (12th to 10th), in reality he had been +14 and had earned all but one of those positions by making passes under green flag conditions.  We had a solid night going early.  We just missed the dash, but I knew we had a car capable of running in the top 10.  After the contact on lap one, I had to work a lot harder for it, but it feels good to know we have our speed back.  Earning a top 10 all the way from the back…I’ll take it for sure.“, Reinhardt shared, reflecting on the positive aspects of their night.

 

Dirt Oval at Route 66: Joliet, IL (Qualifying 3rd, Heat 4th,  Dash 1st, A-main 1st)

On Saturday, the tour made its way southwest along Lake Michigan to the half-mile just outside of Chicago.  28 teams were on hand to compete for the $8,000 winner’s share.  Under the format for 30 cars or less, all teams would qualify against the entire field, then be divided into three heats.

 

Reinhardt started the night strong, registering the 3rd quickest time in the field.  The top 4 were inverted for each heat race, giving the All Star Rookie of the Year candidate the 4th starting spot in heat three.  He held on to that spot in the 8-lap qualifying event to not only transfer to the A-main but, as the fastest qualifier in the heat, put himself in the dash redraw.

 

We’ve all heard the famous quote from a Roman philosopher: “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”  For Reinhardt, opportunity knocked in the form of drawing the pole for the 6-lap dash, and he was prepared.  Starting alongside Cory Eliason, Kyle had the advantage in the opening turns.  Eliason was strong and took the top spot away to lead lap one.  Reinhardt wasn’t done.  He powered back under the Rudeen Racing No.26 of Eliason on lap 2.  Once back in front, Reinhardt would not be denied.  He pulled out to a convincing lead and claimed his first career All Star Circuit of Champions dash victory, and with it, the pole for the A-main.

 

The 25-lap feature event had trouble finding its rhythm.  Over the first 8 laps, there 5 cautions.  For Reinhardt that meant clean air to race in, but it also meant having to pick the right line and withstand challenges on each restart.  He was up to the task.  Each time, he managed the restart like a veteran and consistently put himself in position to open up a lead.  The race remained green between laps 10 and 20, allowing Reinhardt to reach lapped traffic.  His lead over Tyler Courtney would vary during that stretch.  It would balloon to almost 1.5 seconds, then shrink to nearly 0.5 seconds at times in traffic.  Reinhardt kept making the right decisions at the right times and kept himself just out of reach of “Sunshine”.  The final caution appeared with five laps remaining.  Sometimes a late caution is a bad thing.  It can give the second place car a final shot on a restart.  In this case, it seemed to be in Reinhardt’s favor.  With clear track ahead of him on the final restart, he bolted away from the field, capturing his first career All Star Circuit of Champions victory and the $8,000 check that came with it.  

 

A very happy Reinhardt shared his insight on the night.  “I think the dash was the turning point tonight for me.  We were fast all night but when I was able to get back by Cory (Eliason), I knew we had a car capable of winning.”  Turning his thoughts to the feature, he continued, “All the yellows at the start were tough.  We don’t have any spotters, so I just had to go with my gut and try to get a good start each time.  Once we got going, I wasn’t sure how close anyone was to me, but I knew I had to keep up a good pace.  That got tougher when we got to lapped traffic, but I just kept trying to put (lapped) cars between me and Tyler (Courtney)When that last caution came out, I knew we would be alright in the clean air the rest of the way.

Kyle and the RQM Enterprises, Capitol Renegade No.91 team remained in the Midwest following the Route 66 event to compete in four upcoming All Star Circuit of Champions events titled as the All Star Indiana Invasion presented by the Rayce Rudeen Foundation.  The series will spend two nights at Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis, IN on May 20th-21st, where the finale will pay $10,000 to the winner.  Teams will then travel to Gas City I-69 Speedway in Gas City, IN on May 22nd and finally will close out the swing with a $26,000 to win event at the Kokomo speedway in Kokomo, IN on May 23rd.
