Austin Berry Continues Building on Consistency

Trip South to Hagerstown Speedway Proves Worthwhile

Following a top 10 run at Port Royal Speedway on May 1st, Austin Berry was anxious to return to the track and back up that finish with another consistent outing.  Unfortunately, Mother Nature forced the cancellation of the May 8th ULMS show at his home track and thus forced him and the rest of his ABR team to wait an additional week.      

 

Berry, crew chief Josh Sheaffer, and the team made the tow south to Hagerstown, MD for the annual Frank Sagi Tribute race.  Hagerstown Speedway is not a place where Austin has logged a lot of laps, and the event was sure to draw a competitive field, so it would definitely put the team out of their comfort zone and provide a good measuring stick for their progress this season.  

 

Sunday night 31 cars signed in for the $3500-to-win event just south of the Mason-Dixon line.  The field was divided into four groups for 5-lap, combined hot lap/time trial sessions.  Teams later heat-raced in the same groups.  On his laps under the clock, Berry registered the 4th quickest time in his group, which in turn meant he would start 4th in his heat race.  Despite having a car he believed was good enough to finish 3rd in that 8-lap heat race, Austin felt he made a couple mistakes that resulted in his 5th place finish.

 

Hagerstown can be a tricky place, especially early in the evening when the sun is beating down on one end of the track, but the other end of the track is in the shade.  You’ve got dust flying at one end and rooster tails of mud at the other.  Not having a lot of laps there probably hurt us in making setup decisions early in the night for qualifying.“, Berry explained. 

 

After making adjustments to his Rocket Chassis XR1 in an effort to keep up with track conditions and to improve the handling, Berry lined up 20th for the 30-lap main event.  He was able to make moves and gain positions early on, and as the racing groove got wider, the high line provided an opportunity to build momentum and make a few more passes.  One notable positive sign that the team had made the right decisions was that Berry accomplished the majority of his passing without the benefit of restarts.  The caution flag flew only once, with 5 laps remaining in the event.  Ultimately the Mifflin, PA wheelman came home 13th, in the midst of a 3-wide battle that nearly earned him 11th.

 

Berry was encouraged by the outing.  “In the past, we would have struggled to make the show against a field like this.  Tonight, we qualified through our heat race and passed cars in the feature.  We earned what we got tonight and that feels pretty good.”  Austin continued, “I really want to thank JDS Racing and Jim Stevens for his support.  With his guidance we have been having more and more nights like this.  We’re finally seeing the consistency we’ve been chasing for a while now.  I’m excited for the rest of this season.”

Quiet Weekend for #TeamA2D Provides Opportunity for Preparation

Schedule Beginning to Heat Up for Teams

Both Zach Newlin and Austin Berry planned to be behind the wheel this past weekend.  Mother Nature wasn’t cooperative.  

 

“Zach Daddy” was slated to strap into the Mansberger Motorsports 358 sprint car on Friday, May 7th at Williams Grove Speedway but racing was cancelled due to weather, as was his 410 season debut on Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway in the Burke Motorsports ride.

 

Austin Berry was anxious to get back to the track Saturday, May 8th at Port Royal to continue building on the top 10 run he had logged the week prior, but of course that was nixed as well.

 

The only unaffected team was Kyle Reinhardt and the RQM Enterprises, Capitol Renegade No.91 team, who had already planned to take the weekend off to prepare for an upcoming busy stretch.  Next up for Reinhardt is a trip to the Midwest for two events with the All Star Circuit of Champions.  On May 14th the tour will stop at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, MI, followed by a stop at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, IL on May 15th.

 

As for Austin Berry Racing, they are sorting out their options for the coming weeks.  Selinsgrove Speedway on May 15th and the the 2-day World of Outlaw Late Models show at Port Royal Speedway on Fri/Sat May 21st-22nd are all on their radar but final decisions have not yet been made.  Stay tuned to Addicted2Dirt PR’s website and social media for updates.

 

Next up for Zach Newlin will be a weekend off as well, then he will be back in the seat of the Mansberger Motorsports 358 sprint car for a show at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, May 21st, followed (tentatively) by Port Royal Speedway on Saturday, May 22nd in the Burke Motorsports 410 sprint car.

Kyle Reinhardt Looking Forward to Getting Back on Track After Challenging Weekend

Western PA and Ohio Provide Rough Weekend

Name almost any challenge for a sprint car team and Kyle Reinhardt probably experienced it over the past weekend when the All Star Circuit of Champions sprint car tour rolled through Western PA and Eastern Ohio.  If it wasn’t the weather, then it was probably a tricky track surface or maybe a part failure.  Some things you can’t control, some you can.  The bottom line is they collectively prevented Reinhardt and his Capitol Renegade team from continuing to build on any momentum they had from their most recent outings.

 

What was to be a 3-race weekend started off on a down note when Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, PA was forced to cancel Friday night’s event due to very wet and cold conditions.  The team instead headed north to Hartford, OH to get ready to tackle Sharon Speedway.

 

Sharon Speedway (Qualifying 29th, Heat 7th,  B-main 14th)

A sizable field of 41 teams signed in to compete on Saturday night.  The night’s format divided the field into 5 groups, with Reinhardt going out in the final group, 34th overall, for his qualifying laps.  His quickest lap was only good enough for 5th in his group and 29th overall.  

 

With four cars transferring from each heat race to the A-main, Reinhardt would need to move forward just one spot from his 5th starting spot in the final heat race of the evening but unfortunately he went backwards to a 7th place finish instead.  They would only get one more shot to make the finale but rolling off from the 12th starting spot in the B-main, which was only advancing four cars, was a tall order.  Again the team struggled to find the combination they needed and failed to reach a transfer position, ending their night.

 

We’re struggling in the slick right now.  If there are some patches of brown, we’re good and we can race.  We’ll get it figured out.“, Reinhardt shared.  

 

Tri City Raceway Park (Qualifying 13th, Heat 3rd,  A-main 22nd)

Sunday brought a new day, a new track and a new opportunity as Kyle and team unloaded at Tri City Raceway Park in Franklin, PA.  The evening started out on a positive note, with a good pill draw and a good qualifying lap.  Reinhardt went out 6th overall and registered the 13th best lap in the 34 car field.  It was also good enough for 2nd quick in his group.

 

The effort under the clock gave him the 3rd starting spot in the first of four heats.  Five cars would transfer to the A-main, but Reinhardt wanted to control his own destiny and put himself in the dash by winning the heat race.  The second best scenario would be Tyler Courtney winning, which would put Reinhardt in the dash by virtue of his time.  Although his Capitol Renegade No.91 was good in the 8-lap qualifier, it wasn’t quite good enough to win.  He settled for 3rd, behind runner up Courtney, and thus missed the dash.

 

Reinhardt and team were still encouraged though.  They had some speed back and would get a chance to leave town with a decent night under their belt, especially if they could move forward from their 12th starting spot.  The hope didn’t last long though.  Disaster struck as Reinhardt sailed his mount into the first corner on lap 2 and quickly found himself upside down, bringing an abrupt end to his night.

 

Reinhardt reflected on night saying, “Overall we had a decent night going.  We’ve been working on getting our engines running better and I think we were good enough to run top 10, maybe even top 5 if things went right.  We just wanted to survive and get out of here with a good finish.  Unfortunately our rear axle broke entering turn one on the second lap, so we ended up with a bent race car instead.”  He quickly turned his attention to the future.  “We have a long stretch of All Star races coming up this month, so we’ll skip The Grove and take next weekend off.  We need to get caught up, fix some equipment and make sure our motors are fresh.“, the All Star Rookie of the Year candidate shared.  It was a veteran-like perspective, recognizing the long haul that is a season on the road with the traveling series.

Austin Berry Impressive in Top 10 Run

Bedford Washed Out: Successful Shake Down at Port Royal

It had been a long, tiring three weeks full of hard work since ABR loaded up their bent Rocket XR1 at Selinsgrove Speedway after getting caught up in someone else’s mess.  In that span of time, the team found a lightly used, one year newer Rocket chassis, made a multi-day trip to Georgia for a family commitment, and assembled the newer car piece by piece.  It took a final push in the shop, one that included a lot of helping hands from another team over the final days, to be ready to load up just in time to head to Bedford Speedway on Friday, April 30th for their scheduled $8,500 to win show.  It was a big effort for a small team.

 

Unfortunately Mother Nature rained on their return, washing out the big ULMS show on Friday, April 30th at the old fairgrounds speedway.  On the bright side, Berry would get to shake down the new car the next night at the track where he has the most laps in a super late model, Port Royal Speedway. 

 

A stout field of 38 cars signed in at “The Speed Palace” Saturday night.  The program called for a dual heats with passing points, a format used once or twice each season to create a unique show.  In this format, each heat race is split into two 6-lap segments.  The initial lineup is set by a pill draw, then after 6 laps, points are awarded based on where a car started vs. where it finished.  Next, the original starting lineup is inverted and the field runs another 6 laps, after which points are awarded again in the same manner.

 

Austin started on the pole of the fourth heat and pulled out to a healthy lead until the caution flag waved with two laps remaining in the first segment.  On the restart, a desperation slider into turn one by the second place car pushed Berry to the wall to avoid contact.  He recovered, but Dan Stone slipped by both cars to grab the lead.  Austin held on to finish 2nd to Stone.  The second segment inversion saw Berry start 8th and methodically work his way to 4th in the quick 6-lap race.  Lap times showed Berry was turning the fastest laps in the field during that final segment.  It’s good news when your car works in clean air.  It’s great news when it works in traffic.

 

The qualifying effort was good enough to place Berry 8th in points, meaning he would start the feature event from outside row 4.  The feature lineup was loaded with notable northeast late model names like the Eckert, Robinson, Yoder, Suhler, Rine, Winters, Covert, Knaub, and several more.  No late model show at Port Royal is easy these days.

 

This car is definitely different than our old one.  It’s looser.  We have to tweak it to tighten it up just a bit.  Our old car was exactly the opposite even though every part we bolted on this car came off the old one.“, Berry explained as he shrugged.   He was also grinning as he shared that insight.  Maybe that’s because ‘loose’ is fun to drive…and maybe it’s because he knows ABR has something in this car they can definitely work with.

 

On the initial start of the feature, Berry surged around the top into 6th.  Only a couple laps into the 25-lap main event, the caution appeared.  On the ensuing restart, which utilized the ‘Delaware Double File’ method, Berry had to start on the inside line.  This is because in this restart procedure, the leader lines up out front all alone, then the second place car chooses whether he wants inside or outside of the second row.  From there, all even numbered positions follow his choice and all odd numbered positions take the opposite line.  Trapped down low, Berry lost a couple positions over the next lap or two.

 

Over the remaining 22 laps, there were three more restarts.  Despite another inside line restart with 10 laps remaining, Austin managed to stay in the fight.  With only a fraction of a second separating the back half of the top 10, Berry floated between 7th and 9th positions, claiming 8th for good with 4 laps remaining.  

 

Austin and the entire ABR team were all smiles following their run.  You could feel the positive energy in the pit as Berry recapped their night.  “Hell of a night for all the work that happened in the last two weeks. We spent more time the whole night working on making me comfortable in the cockpit than we did working on the setup of the car.  I feel the hard work ahead of time at the shop showed in the speed of the car.  The team all worked extremely hard and were able to give me a pretty damn good car for the feature.  Everyone worked well together.  Every time I came off the track, I had a list of things I wanted done and the whole team went to work.  It was a pretty solid night for our first night out with a new car and it was the first time this year we have been able to put an entire night together.  We heat raced well and were able to stay up front in the feature.“, Berry commented with a happy and confident tone in his voice.

 

That tone is likely because he knows this was just a shake down.  Now they will go back to the shop armed with some data and knowledge about this car that will help them be even more ready for the next race.  Certainly seems fair for Berry to be optimistic when you think about it that way.

Zach Newlin Wheels Mansberger 21m to Podium Finish at Williams Grove

New Pairing Achieving Early Success

For a driver wheeling a different chassis/engine combination than he is accustomed to, and a team working to understand the communication style of a new driver, early success is not typical.  It takes time for a team to gel.  The new 358 sprint car combination of Zach Newlin and Mansberger Motorsports seemed to show some early potential with a solid ending to their first outing together a week earlier at Williams Grove Speedway in the heart of PA Posse country, but one top 10 doesn’t prove anything on its own.  Friday, April 23rd found them back at “The Grove” to try to put a successful night together from start to finish in just their second outing. 

 

With 22 HJ Towing and Recovery 358 sprint cars signed in for action, three 8-lap heat races were lined up by random pill draw.  All cars would qualify for the A-main but only the top 4 finishers would be involved in the redraw to set the top 12 starting spots for the night’s main event.

 

Newlin’s team drew the pole position for the second heat but Zach quickly showed he was more than just good enough to stay out front.  When the green flag dropped, he pulled away quickly and built a 5 car-length advantage by the time he reached the famous bridge halfway down the backstretch.  The Mansberger Motorsports 21m almost appeared to be on a rail.  It was balanced and smooth on corner entry and exit.  Newlin continued to steadily build his lead, winning the event by nearly a straightaway.

 

A heat race performance like that can actually make the team’s setup decisions for the feature tougher.  Do you leave the car alone?  Do you attempt to make minor improvements?  Do you adjust to keep up with the ever-changing surface of a dirt track as more laps are turned by other divisions?  While it can appear from the stands that the drivers just strap in, mash the gas and turn left, it takes so much more than that.  These cars are finicky and sensitive.  One wrong educated guess on setup by the crew or the wrong approach with the throttle and wheel by the driver, and the car will be going backward through the running order instead of forward.

 

Next up was the redraw for the top 12 teams.  Fortunately, a favorable draw provided the team with the 4th starting spot for the 20-lap feature event.  Even the starting spot factors into the team’s decisions on setup, so now they could finalize their decisions.   

 

The initial drop of the green on the feature event saw Newlin get a great start and slip into second by the time the field exited turn 2, however the caution would come out before a lap was complete, forcing a complete restart.  Once the event was successfully underway, he was able to work his way up to second on lap 2 using a pass on the low side through turns one and two.  

 

Over the next several laps, Zach tried the low side and high side at both ends of the speedway, working to find a way to get quicker and close the 6 car-length lead Matt Findley had built ahead of him.  In the meantime, Derek Locke was pursuing Newlin and trying to find a way around him.  When Findley entered lapped traffic, Zach was able to close the gap slightly but the caution came out just after the field reached the halfway mark, which would mean a clear track for the leader on the restart.

 

On the restart, Newlin drove low in turn one to try to make a run on Findley and close the door on Locke at the same time.  Locke was strong though and managed to get around the outside of Zach, dropping him to 3rd.  Over the remaining laps, as the fuel load lightened on Newlin’s 21m, the handling wasn’t quite good enough to run down Locke and Findley, but it was good enough to maintain 3rd and record a podium finish for Mansberger Motorsports.

 

A dominating heat race win followed by a podium finish certainly meets the definition of a successful night from start to finish, so file this night under ‘mission accomplished’.

Reinhardt Caps 4-Race All Star Swing with Top 5 Finish at Bedford

Smart Decisions at Virginia Motor Speedway Result in Top 10 Finish

Coming into the 4-race swing that would take them from Virginia through Central Pennsylvania, Kyle Reinhardt and his new team had only competed in a handful of events, and those had been spread out on the calendar.  While it may appear much like the No.91 we’ve become accustomed to seeing in recent years, there are notable changes for 2021.  Two key ones are the J&J chassis and a new crew chief.  The team entered two races in Georgia in late January, one race in Florida in early February, a couple in Central PA in March and two early April races in Ohio and New Jersey.  That type of schedule can be good for a new team to make sure they have things together but it can also be hard to get into a rhythm and know where you really are as a team.  The upcoming four All Star points races in four nights would likely help them measure that.

 

Virginia Motor Speedway (Qualifying 13th, Heat 7th,  A-main 6th)

Reinhardt’s Capitol Renegade No.91 team was one of 26 to make the trip to Jamaica, VA to compete on Thursday night.  Per the All Star format for up to 30 cars, the field would time trial as one group to set the lineups for three 8-lap heats, which would be followed by a single dash and a B-main to round out the starting lineup for the night’s A-main.  Six cars would qualify for the feature event from each heat, with the heat winner and quickest transfer from each heat making the 8-car dash, in addition to the top two overall times who qualified through their heat.

 

It was the first-ever trip to the VA oval for Reinhardt.  He and crew chief Bob Curtis struggled early in the evening to find the right combination and were relegated to the B-main.  After transferring to the A-main with a third place finish in the consolation event, the team decided the best strategy for the feature would be tire conservation.  After starting 21st, Reinhardt had moved up to 18th by lap 8, then decided to ride there for a while.  The approach paid dividends late in the 30 lap main event, as other teams began suffering flat tires.  Through a combination of green flag passes and attrition, Kyle found himself in 12th when the caution lights flashed on at lap 28.  On the final restart for the green-white-checkered finish, Reinhardt decided to use the rubber he had preserved, overtaking four competitors in the final two laps, while another two suffered flat tires.  Reinhardt claimed the 6th position just before flashing under the checkered flag.  Summing up the satisfying result, Reinhardt said “We definitely struggled early tonight, but at the end of the day you’ve got to race the racetrack, and our strategy paid off.”   

 

Williams Grove Speedway (Qualifying 3rd in group/20th overall, Heat 2nd,  A-main 15th)

Friday night saw 35 cars register for action at the legendary oval known as “The Grove” in Mechanicsburg, PA.  The higher car count triggered a different All Star format for 31-40 cars.  The field was divided into four groups for qualifying and heat competition, which would be followed by two 5-car dashes and a B-main to set the field.  Four cars would qualify for the feature event from each heat race, with the winner and quickest transfer from each heat making the dash redraw, in addition to the top two overall times who qualified through their heat.   

 

An unfortunate pill draw meant Reinhardt would go out next to last for qualifying, which can often be difficult to overcome due to declining track conditions.  However, on this night, the car was good enough and Kyle was able to do so.  He recorded the 3rd quickest time in his group, which put him on the front row for his heat race.  Reinhardt pursued Tim Shaffer throughout the heat and kept Tyler Courtney at bay behind him, but was unable to pass Shaffer for the win, which would have put him in a dash and a much better position later in the night.  Instead, the winner (Shaffer) and fastest qualifier (Courtney) went to the dash.  

 

Reinhardt went on to start 13th and finish 15th in the main event.  Afterwards he commented, “We were just mediocre tonight.  There are some bugs we need to work out.  We had potential for a top 10 if things had worked out for us to get in the dash.

 

Port Royal Speedway (Qualifying 8th group/43rd overall, Heat 7th,  B-main 18th)

Saturday night at the “Speed Palace” saw yet another All Star format (for 41+ cars) utilized to accommodate the 44 drivers who signed in for action.  The only changes from the night before would be five groups instead of four and 6 cars per dash instead of 5.

 

It was apparent from the start of the night Saturday that some of the bugs Reinhardt had referenced the night before were either becoming more problematic or were more impactful to the car’s performance at the fast fairgrounds half mile in Port Royal, PA.  At a venue where Reinhardt has logged a 410 victory, top 5’s and several top 10’s in recent years, he qualified a disappointing 43rd.  Prior to the heat race, in an attempt to get the Capitol Renegade No.91 back up to speed, Kyle and crew made several changes, including an ignition box and spark plugs.  Unfortunately  the struggling continued in their heat race, resulting in a 7th place finish.  “The car wasn’t responding.  It just didn’t have any feel.  Bob (Curtis) and I tried a couple changes for the B-main to see if we could resolve the handling issues but we knew starting 16th we would have to be really good right away to move forward and make the race tonight“, Reinhardt shared.  After five laps of the B-main, he knew the issues were still there and he decided to call it a night.  It was time to head back to the shop and get to work.  

 

After loading up, Reinhardt shared some insight. “Running the All Star series, you don’t have the luxury of figuring issues out over time.  If you want to be competitive, sometimes you have to change all of the things that could be part of the issue – all at the same time, then figure out later which one of them actually resolved it.  That’s what we decided to do when we got back to the shop Saturday night.”   He continued, “We went back to basics and did everything we could to make sure we would be better the next night.

 

Bedford Speedway (Qualifying 8th, Heat 1st,  A-main 5th)

Thirty teams made the Sunday night trip a little further west in Pennsylvania to the second  fairgrounds half-mile in as many nights.  For the third straight night Reinhardt could only shake his head and grin as he drew a pill that placed him at the tail end of the qualifying order.  The first encouraging sign that the late hours in the shop the previous night were worth it, came when he logged the 8th quickest time overall.  

 

The qualifying effort put Kyle on the front row for the third heat race.  He settled into second, chasing leader Zeb Wise and holding off Rico Abreu.  Reinhardt will tell you he doesn’t believe in luck, “I believe you make your own luck.  You put yourself in position to earn things.”  Call it luck or being in position to earn it,  when Zeb Wise blew a left-rear tire with one lap remaining in the heat race, the Capitol Renegade No.91 held on for the win and the spot in the dash that comes with it.  Reinhardt started 6th and finished 5th in that dash, placing him inside row 3 to start the A-main.

 

At the start of the 30-lap main event, the Neptune City, NJ native got a little “crossed up” with the 39 of Anthony Macri and lost a few positions, slipping as far back as 8th in the early going.  Not the start Reinhardt wanted, especially knowing he had a pretty good car under him.  He remained composed, settled in and began working his way forward again.  By lap 14, he had climbed back up to 6th.  He remained focused and claimed the 5th position on lap 24, which he would hold to the finish.

 

Reinhardt reflected on the team’s effort at Bedford, “It was a really solid night for us.  Really good to know our hard work after Port Royal paid off.  This gives us a lot of confidence through the off week and into the next race.”  It seems the fairgrounds speedway in Pennsylvania is quickly becoming one of his favorites.  “Last year we came here for the first time ever, finished top 10 with the All Stars and got the Hard Charger award.  Now we’ve got a top 5 here with the All Stars.  This is a fun track.  I like it.“, Reinhardt commented.

 

It’s still early, but if this 4-race stretch is any indication, the driver/crew chief relationship between Reinhardt and Curtis is starting to gel just fine.  Despite missing the show Saturday night at Port Royal, the Jeff McCall/Wayne Quackenbush operation finds itself sitting 8th in the All Star Circuit of Champions point standings thus far in 2021.

Zach Newlin Logs Top 10 in Debut with Mansberger Motorsports

Team Recovers from Early Issues at Williams Grove

It was difficult to know what to expect from the new combination of Zach Newlin and Mansberger Motorsports.  Both had plenty of laps and success over the years, but none together.   This pairing would mean learning new equipment and new communication styles.  Hopefully the learning curve to find a good chemistry would be short.


Friday, April 16th was the season debut for the HJ Towing & Recovery 358 Sprints at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.  21 teams signed in for action, which meant three 8-lap heats from which all cars would qualify, however only the top 4 teams from each heat would go to the redraw.


The pill draw put Zach in the 3rd starting spot for heat two.  From the drop of the green, it was clear something wasn’t quite right.  The car was not rotating properly in the corners and Newlin was gradually losing track position.  He would end up finishing 6th in the non-stop qualifying race.


Upon his return to the pits, Zach reported that the throttle had been sticking on corner entry, which required him to lift it by force with his foot.  Essentially this meant he was either on the throttle or off the throttle, there was nothing in between.  That ‘in between’ is essential to be able to make a sprint car drive and handle properly.  Fortunately, it didn’t take the team long to identify the cause of the throttle issue and resolve it.  With that corrected and a few shock adjustments completed, they were ready to see what they could do in the feature.


Newlin started deep in the field in 17th for the 20 lap main event.  The second and final caution of the event came with 9 laps remaining.  The car was clearly handling much better and Zach had settled into a rhythm after the first few laps.  Under caution, he made a wing angle adjustment from the cockpit in an attempt to get a little more bite.  He restarted 14th and would go on to show he had made the right adjustment and had also figured some things out about the car and the racing surface during the first half of the event.  


Sticking to the low side of the speedway, Newlin was able to run down and pass a car every other lap over the remaining laps, including a hard-earned final pass for 10th coming to the white flag.  The feature run by Zach Daddy certainly helped the entire team forget about the woes earlier in the evening.


For Newlin and Mansberger, the top 10 in their debut together was great, but the most exciting part was the realization of how good this team may be when they don’t have to dig themselves out of a hole.  “Without the throttle issues earlier tonight, we’re probably a top five car in our first night together.“, Newlin said with a grin that exuded anticipation for their next outing and the remainder of the 2021 season.

Reinhardt Experiences Lows and Highs as Month of April Opens

Trip to Home State Provides Boost for Reinhardt

Entering his first full time season with the series, Kyle Reinhardt was hoping to kick off the All Star Circuit of Champions points races with a solid weekend, but Attica Raceway Park in Ohio didn’t cooperate with his plans.  A trip back to his home state to visit Bridgeport Motorsports Park in NJ a few days later, helped restore his confidence.

 

Friday’s Core & Main Spring Nationals program at Attica Raceway Park was canceled due to cold temperatures, taking away an opportunity to log some laps on a track he had not visited before and leaving Reinhardt with a one-day show on Saturday to accomplish his goal for the points opener.

 

Saturday night, April 3rd, saw 30 teams sign in to compete with the All Stars at Attica Raceway Park.  The format called for timed qualifying to set the lineups for three, 8-lap heat races.  Six cars would transfer to the A-main from each heat, with the balance of the field relegated to the B-main for a final shot at making the show.

 

Reinhardt was the 21st car to go under the clock.  His lap was only good enough for 27th quickest overall, which put him 9th in the starting lineup for the third heat.  Having learned a little from their qualifying laps, Reinhardt and team made some adjustments prior to the heat race.  Those changes seemed to be paying off, as Kyle worked his way into a qualifying spot.  Unfortunately Reinhardt made an untimely error and clipped one of the tires used to mark the inside of the racing surface.  The contact was enough to get him upside down and inflict enough damage to end his heat race.

 

The team was able to make repairs in time to run the B-main, hoping to race their way into the main event, however Reinhardt, who started near the back of that event, found himself struggling with the handling and in too deep of a hole to recover, ending the team’s night with a 10th place finish in the consolation event.

 

The RQM Enterprises, Capitol Renegade No.91 unloaded at Bridgeport Motorsports Park in Swedesboro, NJ on April 6th to compete in the event dubbed as the “Posse Invasion”, as several teams crossed the border from PA to compete.  Reinhardt was about to make his first laps on the speedway’s new 4-tenths mile configuration.  Aside from a couple visits to familiar Pennsylvania turf in March, he was getting plenty of opportunities to learn from new facilities, with trips to Screven (GA), East Bay (FL) and of course, Attica (OH) already in his notebook this year.

 

Bridgeport’s format for the special event included a pill draw to divide the 30 entered teams into 3 heat groups.  Each group would run a 3-lap timed dash to establish the starting order for their heat races later in the evening.  The top 4 would be inverted.  Reinhart was rolling pretty well and registered the 4th quickest time, placing him on the pole for the heat race.  “We had some ups and downs throughout the night but we definitely started off strong and were making gains each time we hit the track“, Reinhardt noted.

 

Kyle capitalized on his starting position, jumping out front quickly on the start of the third heat race.  He was never challenged, even withstanding a late race restart that put Ryan Smith, a recent winner in URC competition at the track, on his rear bumper.  The heat race victory put Reinhardt into the 6-lap dash that would establish the starting order for the top 6 cars in the A-main.  Unfortunately the dash draw turned up the six pill for the 91 team, putting Kyle at the back of the starting lineup for the dash.  He was unable to make up any ground, but crossed the line 5th thanks to someone else’s misfortune.

 

Reinhardt rolled off from the 5th starting spot in the night’s 30 lap main event.  In the opening laps, he slipped back a couple positions and as the leader completed lap 10, Kyle found himself in 8th trying to establish a rhythm.  He was able to find his groove and gain back some of the ground he had lost, recapturing 7th just before the halfway sign.  A restart after a late race caution presented an opportunity for Reinhardt to get more.  Danny Dietrich made a hard charge to the low side as the field took the white flag.  Freddie Rahmer, who had lined up right in front of Reinhardt, moved low to take the line away from Dietrich as the pack sailed into turn 3.  This opened the door on the high side for Reinhardt to blast around the top and claim 6th as he flashed under the checkered flag.

 

The Neptune City, NJ native was pleased with the team’s night but acknowledged his own mistakes that probably cost the team a couple spots at the end of the night.  “I was getting more and more comfortable as the night went.  The changes (crew chief) Bob was making to the car were working for me.  I just gave up too much at the start of the race.” Reinhardt shared.  He continued, “I made some poor lane choices the first few laps and the guys around me pounced on it.  There’s no room for mistakes when you’re racing against these guys.  They are in attack mode 100% of the time.”    

 

Overall it was a really good night for Kyle and the Jeff McCall/Wayne Quackenbush operation.  A solid top 10 against this competition is nothing to hang your head about.  Reinhardt just knew he could have had a little more, saying, “We could’ve been racing for 4th or 5th if I had made better decisions early in the race.  I have some things to work on.”  Reinhardt wrapped up his thoughts on the night with a knowing grin, commenting, “You can lose a lot quickly when you make mistakes out there.  Track position is so much easier to give than take.”

Two Steps Forward, One Step Back for ABR

Selinsgrove Delivers Setback; Williams Grove Washed Out

In recent weeks, performance has been trending the right direction for Austin Berry Racing.  The Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, Addicted2DirtPR.com, Nathan Berry Beef Farm, A&C Racing Engines, Ontime Body & Graphic, Swift Springs, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, VP Racing Fuels, Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86 has responded to recent changes.  For Austin, the feel he was looking for was almost entirely back and consistency finally existed again.  All the team wanted out of their April 9th/10th double-header weekend with the United Late Model Series (ULMS) was to continue that trend.  

 

During the week, the team investigated the engine miss that had arisen in the closing laps of the race at Port Royal Speedway on April 3rd.  Fortunately nothing serious was uncovered.  It appeared the ignition coil was going bad, so as part of necessary maintenance and to ensure they covered all bases, they replaced the coil, spark plugs, fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter, any of which could have resulted in similar symptoms.  A test fire of the engine proved the issue was resolved and they could turn their focus to preparing for the double-header weekend ahead.

 

Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, PA they never got the chance to continue their recent momentum and improve on the 11th place finish Austin had recorded a few weeks prior on his first trip to the legendary oval.  The day had a promising afternoon and evening forecast, but a persistent mist developed in the late afternoon, which led to the cancellation of the event around 6pm, less than an hour before hot laps were scheduled to occur.  

 

Twenty four hours later the team was one of twenty three ULMS teams unloaded at Selinsgrove Speedway in Selinsgrove, PA.  Austin was the 11th car to go under the clock for qualifying.  He recorded the 15th quickest time in the field, which placed him in the 5th starting spot in heat number three.  After one competitor was unable to make the call for the third heat, Berry was able to take the green from the 4th spot.  Despite experiencing an issue with the right front of the car bottoming out, he was able to finish 3rd in the heat race.  The issue with bottoming out was something that had surfaced the previous week but the team had made adjustments they believed would resolve the issue.

 

The team huddled to plan for the 30-lap feature, in which Austin would roll off 9th.  Their expectation was that the track would dry out a little, so they made their tire choice and adjustments accordingly, along with further adjustments to address the bottoming issue.

 

By the time we completed our pace laps before the green flag for the feature, I was pretty sure we had made the wrong tire choice.“, shared Austin Berry from the team’s shop the following morning.  “The track had held more moisture throughout the show than we expected.  At that point, I was just hoping once we got enough heat in the tires, they would start working.” 

 

Berry’s concern was realized when the green flag dropped and he slipped back four spots during the first two laps of the event..  His tires just weren’t ‘hooking up’ and it was costing him.  By lap 4 the tires had heated up and kicked in.  His lap times reflected the difference and Austin started to recover and run down the cars that had gotten by at the start.  He got back by one competitor and was battling a couple more when the caution lights flashed on with 11 laps complete.  

 

The ULMS uses what is known as the “Delaware Double File” lineup on restarts.  This means the leader is out front all alone, while the remainder of the field lines up double-file behind the leader.  The ensuing restart, which found Austin lined up in 12th, on the inside of row 7 didn’t play out well.  Wanting to capitalize on the restart, Berry was glued to the back of the car in front of him, Ken Trevitz, as the field headed into turn one.  Unfortunately, a car on the outside just in front of Berry, turned down and made contact with Trevitz, leading to a chain reaction.  Fortunately, thanks to quick thinking, Berry was able to spin his car and avoid contact, sliding sideways to a stop next to Trevitz.  Unfortunately, one of the cars behind Austin didn’t manage the same accomplishment and instead made heavy contact with the left front of Berry’s car, then rotated and contacted the left rear of his No.86 as well.  

 

The incident would end the night for ABR.  It didn’t take long to determine the damage was pretty extensive.  The front clip of Berry’s Rocket XR1 chassis was bent.  This was definitely going to mean a step backward from all the progress the team had been making, not only in terms of tonight’s result but also in terms of their finances.  This would definitely put a dent in the budget.  Replacing the bent front clip is expensive and will require tearing down the car, pulling the motor, and taking a trip to Rocket Racing in West Virginia.

 

Looking back on the incident, Berry shared, “I’m certainly not happy about it, but these things happen.  It’s part of racing.  I really thought the car behind us could have missed hitting us, but it’s behind us now and we have to focus on the work we have to do to get back to the track.”  Austin continued, “It’s really frustrating because the tires had just come in and I know we could have driven back into the top 10 in the remaining 19 laps.”  

 

The competition is so close, every decision made by the teams can be critical.  Would Austin have been ahead of the accident had they made a different tire choice?  Maybe.  Would he have been better off than the competition late in the race with the tire compound he chose?  Maybe.  None of us will ever know.  That’s just one of the things that makes this sport so challenging.  It also makes it rewarding when you get it right.

 

ABR was already planning to take the next couple weekends off, but now there will be a lot of unplanned work and expense during those off weeks.  The goal is to be ready to head to Bedford Speedway on Friday, April 30th for the $8,500 to win, ULMS sanctioned, Billy Winn 85th Anniversary Classic, but that could be challenging.  Stay tuned to all the social media outlets below for updates from ABR.
