WINCHESTER, Va. – Trever Feathers and Larry Royston Racing will start their new race season Sunday, March 6, at Port Royal (Pa.) Speedway’s 73rd annual Opening Day event with a chance to advance the record books.

 

The 29-year-old has won the past two Port Royal season openers, which means a third win next month would give Feathers the most all-time Opening Day feature victories in the Late Model division at Port Royal

 

Feathers is tied with Andy Haus and Jason Covert for most Opening Day Late Model wins at the Juniata River Valley half-mile clay oval.

 

All told, Feathers and Royston are gearing for their boldest season to date.

 

The team, at the moment, aims to run 30 to 40 races around the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond this year, with potential for 10 to 20 additional events on the national level contingent upon resource inventory.

 

“We’re looking pretty hopeful to start this year,” Feathers said. “A lot’s changed over the winter. Hopefully we can start the year the way we finished.

 

“What makes Opening Day at Port Royal so special is there’s not many places that are racing in early March, especially in Pennsylvania. They have some racing going on in Florida, and there’s always racing going on in the south. But Port Royal has become a staple in racing – in our area and on the national level.

“It’s cool to win that first race because you know a lot of people are watching, a lot of eyes are on that day. It’s always a good thing to start the year off with a win. Anytime you win at Port Royal is big.”

 

Feathers enters his 13th season running Late Models full-time in which he vies to improve upon last year’s three-win result and effectively grow his brand on the national stage.

 

Longhorn Chassis and Bilstein Shocks, the equipment behind Tim McCreadie’s run to last year’s Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series championship, returns for its third and 13th seasons, respectively, with Feathers.

 

Since 2009, Feathers has collected 42 wins in the Late Model and two track championships, numbers that have earned him the reputation of a regional stalwart.

Feathers will be a frequent competitor at Port Royal Speedway this year, the Central Pennsylvania facility that’s turned into one of the nicest motorsport venues in recent years and streamed nationally to race fans abroad via FloRacing.

 

Last year, Feathers finished seventh in the Port Royal Late Model standings despite running only 13 of 18 scheduled events.

 

Feathers will also make Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series stops on April 9 at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway and April 10 at Port Royal Speedway.

 

The $20,000-to-win USA 100 on Aug. 7 at Virginia Motor Speedway is on Feathers’ radar, as well as the $50,000-to-win finale of Rumble by the River weekend on August 26-27, sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.

 

Outside that, Feathers’ schedule remains wide open and fluid.

 

If feasible, Feathers would like to run the Castrol FloRacing Night in America opener at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway on Tuesday, April 12.

 

FloRacing Night in America is a 12-race miniseries from April 12 to Nov. 12 that pays $22,000-to-win the first 11 races with the Nov. 12 finale at Senoia (Ga.) Raceway cashing out $53,053-to-win.

 

Feathers is exploring business partnerships that’d allow his Larry Royston Racing team the autonomy to travel outside the Mid-Atlantic region.

 

“We’d be able to put on 10, 20 races if we were able to find some other partners in this situation,” Feathers said. “Things have kind of gotten a little higher cost-wise. We would like to run some bigger races a little further out of the area. I know we are more than capable of running at that level.”

Feathers hopes this year is a springboard into some of his greatest desires. When the time is right, he and his Larry Royston Racing team would like to run a national tour – perhaps the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series or the World of Outlaws Late Models. 

 

Therefore every opportunity is a valued stepping stone along the way.

 

“First thing’s first, we have to be able to find some consistency,” Feathers said. “We have to be able to go to different race tracks and be competitive. That’s how you win races, you know? You can’t go there and throw stuff at the car and hope you’re going to win.

 

“That doesn’t work anymore. We have to find consistency. Once we find the consistency, then make the right changes to be the fastest car or put ourselves in position to win.”

Devin Hart Compiles Career Year

2021 Success May Be Just the Beginning for the Up and Coming Talent

Devin Hart and KHK Motorsports certainly amassed impressive statistics during the 2021 season.  The stats tell quite a story, but not the whole story.

 

There were some personal accomplishments that will make Hart, his family, and his team smile for a long, long time to come.  Before we get to those stories though, let’s take a quick look at the stats.

 

The Stats

 
In 2021, the KHK Motorsports team entered competition 32 times at 10 tracks in 3 states in their FK Rod Ends / Hungry Run Wine Cellars / JDS Racing / Barron’s Racing Engines / Penske Racing Shocks / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.33K.  They were victorious in 10 of those events, equating to an impressive win percentage of 31%.  

 

A closer look is even more impressive and backs up the use of the phrase ‘career year’.  Hart recorded 22 top 5’s (69%) and 27 top 10’s (84%) in those 32 outings.  In 13 starts at Port Royal Speedway, the 3rd generation racer from Port Royal, PA finished on the podium 9 times, including 4 wins and 4 second place runs. 

 

He was no ‘one track wonder’ either.  At Selinsgrove Speedway, Hart entered 7 events, never finishing worse than 8th and accumulating 3 wins and 5 podium finishes in the process.

 

Need more evidence?  The KHK Motorsports team also won at Bedford Speedway (PA) and Hagerstown Speedway (MD).  The latter included 2 wins and a 4th-place finish in his only 3 starts south of the Mason-Dixon line.

 

The Highs

 

The 2021 season started off strong for Devin Hart and the KHK Motorsports team.  They didn’t just win early; they were winning in convincing fashion from outside the top 5 starting spots.  There were wins from 6th and 10th at Port Royal Speedway in late March and early April, then a win from 9th at Hagerstown Speedway, followed by another win from 6th at Bedford Speedway just a couple weeks later.

 

The Hagerstown win was a career first at the Maryland facility for Hart, a track where he had been close in the past but had generally struggled.   “Mom, Bill (Weimer) and I were here in this victory lane 42 years ago with my dad, so that was pretty special“, Heidi Kauffman, Hart’s mother, shared about that night.

 

Four wins by the end of April, especially quality wins like those, will put a smile on the faces of any race team, but Hart’s team had no idea the best was yet to come.

 

The next chapter to unfold came on May 15th when Hart broke through for his first career win at Selinsgrove Speedway, another place where he had come close but never been able to close the deal before.  He would go on to back it up with a 2nd place finish the following week, plus two more wins in June at the 75 year old half mile.

 

Friday night, May 21st brought Devin Hart and the KHK Motorsports team to Port Royal Speedway for the Billy Vacek / Huey Wilcoxon Memorial race for the World of Outlaw Super Late Models and the Limited Late Models.  This was an event Hart had circled on his calendar at the start of the season.  On a personal level, this one mattered.  It mattered a lot.

 

Hart and the late Billy Vacek were friends, but it was more than that.  A few years back, their race shops were only a few miles apart.  The pair got to know each other when Devin would stop in to talk or help Billy any way he could around the shop.  As the 2018 season was getting started, Hart acquired a newer car and did some testing to shake it down.  The very next day Vacek sent a text asking how the new car was.  He even offered to stop at Hart’s shop and help him get familiar with the new equipment.  From that day on, Billy was never more than a text or a call away when Devin had a question.  Vacek even went to the track with the team about once a month, sharing his knowledge to help the talented young wheelman.  The bond continued to grow throughout the 2018 season and into the 2019 season.  Early in the 2019 season Billy had the opportunity to move to North Carolina to help Brandon Overton, so he headed south to pursue his dreams.  He continued to teach Devin from afar until his untimely passing in an unfortunate accident that summer.

 

So here Hart was, just a few weeks shy of the two year anniversary of losing Billy, strapping in for his memorial event, and wanting nothing more than to make his mentor proud.  I think you can say without a doubt he did just that.  Hart not only won the 25-lap feature event; he dominated.  He never relinquished the top spot, leading from wire-to-wire in an incredibly emotional win for himself, the entire family, and team.  There wasn’t a dry eye in victory lane.

 

Billy’s mom was on hand to congratulate Devin, present the trophy, and pose for photos with the ecstatic team.  The moment meant so much to everyone involved and it came to mean even more less than two months later when Billy’s mother sadly passed away after a battle with cancer.  Hart went on to back up the win with yet another trip to victory lane at Port Royal Speedway the following Saturday night.

 

The Lows

 

The season wasn’t all glory and checkered flags though.  Maintaining the level of performance Hart and his team had achieved is not easy over a long, seven month season.  When the weather heated up, Hart cooled down.  The team went through a stretch in July and into early August when nothing seemed to go their way.  There were mechanical failures, wrecks, and subpar finishes.

 

The sign of a great team though is how they respond to those times.  The entire crew kept putting in the effort and in mid-August, the team returned to victory lane, capturing the ‘W’ at Hagerstown Speedway in special fashion.  Hart battled throughout the race with cousin, and Tyson Hill Race Shop mate, Trent Brenneman and ultimately edged him to complete a memorable 1-2 family finish.  It was a night that would have made the boys’ grandfather and Port Royal Speedway legend, the late Butch Renninger, proud.

Speaking of his grandfather.  As successful as Devin Hart has been, not only during his stellar 2021 season but ever since he moved into the Limited Late Model division in 2014, one very meaningful race has eluded him:  The Butch Renninger Memorial.  The event in honor of his grandfather is arguably the race Hart would most like to win.  He recorded a solid 4th place finish in this year’s 18th Annual edition of the event, but that wasn’t what Hart was after.  Next year’s event is already circled on the calendar.

 

Measuring Up

 

The team decided to venture to Portsmouth Raceway Park (PRP) in Portsmouth, OH for the Dirt Track World Championships in mid-October.  It would be their first time turning laps at the well-known 3/8th-mile, high-banked oval in southern Ohio, and it would give the team a chance to measure themselves against many of the best in the country.

 

The 2-day event showcases the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and the Limited Late Models.  Friday’s on-track activity was rained out, taking away hot laps and time trial sessions.  With no opportunity to acclimate to the new surface, Hart was forced to dive into the ‘deep end of the pool’ so to speak on Saturday.  He certainly didn’t sink in that deep end.  He registered the 10th quickest lap of the 59 entries that went under the clock, putting himself in a solid position to make the show, something only 24 of the 59 teams would accomplish.  

 

Following a 3rd place finish in his heat race, Hart started 16th in the feature at PRP.  He proceeded to work his way into the top 10.  With seven laps remaining, while running in 8th position, a mechanical failure forced Hart out of the event.  Regardless of the official finish, the KHK Motorsports team had shown they belong in the conversation about the best Limited Late Model teams in the country.

 

When the dust had all settled on the 2021 season, Hart and his KHK Motorsports team had garnered a few more cherries on top of it all.  They won two track championships (Port Royal Speedway and Selinsgrove Speedway), plus were recognized on DirtOnDirt’s ‘Best Of 2021’ list.

 

“The thing that stands out in my mind about our season is winning two track championships.  That’s pretty cool.  It’s a tough thing to accomplish“, Hart shared as he reflected on his season.

 

What’s Next

 

“The things we accomplished in 2021 year may change things a little for 2022, I think.  We don’t have to be locked into points racing.  These days you really can’t go into a season with a strict plan.  Schedules change; parts can be hard to get.  You have to manage your resources accordingly.  We are constantly reevaluating our schedule throughout the season to do what makes sense“, Hart explained.

 

The upcoming 2022 season schedule will likely look similar to recent seasons for KHK Motorsports, including some travel, but who knows where it may lead them.  One thing is for sure.  They will look to improve on their achievements of the past year.  That may sound like a tall order, but this wheelman and his team have shown they have what it takes.

 

“Yeah, I guess it was a career year…so far anyway“, Hart said with a grin that clearly indicated he’s not done yet.  He’s got more to add to an already impressive resume.

Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, PA recently announced their 2021 season award recipients.  Among them was Austin Berry who won the Super Late Model Division’s Most Improved Driver Award.  Not only was Berry appreciative of and humbled by the award, to him it validated the team’s determined efforts over the past few seasons.  It’s hard to argue with that, especially when you consider it was the second time in three years the 26 year old wheelman had been recognized with the same award. 

 

“It’s very rewarding to receive this award, especially a second time, because it’s not something they are basing off of statistics.  This is awarded by speedway staff, voting based on what they observed throughout the season“, Berry commented when asked about the award during an interview at the Performance Racing Industry trade show in Indianapolis, IN last week.

 

2021 Recap

 

Berry, aboard the Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Nathan Berry Beef Farm, A&C Racing Engines / JDS Racing / Swift Springs / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86 logged a season that continued the team’s recent trend.  Their performance demonstrated the improved consistency that has resulted from efforts to steadily build the program the right way.

 

Austin Berry competed in 14 events at ‘The Speed Palace’, where he captured his first career super late model victory in June and qualified for his first ever Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series main event in August.  

 

The June triumph at Port Royal was a thrilling, drama-filled feature event that saw Berry survive multiple restarts and fend off attacks from Trever Feathers and Colton Flinner to capture the emotional victory.  On that night, nearly everyone in the stands was a fan of the blue and yellow #86.  It was a long time coming and it seemed to be appreciated by those who were lucky enough to witness it.

 

Speaking about his Lucas Oil Series achievement, Berry said, “The Lucas show for me was very humbling, because ever since we started racing super late models, time-trials have not been my strong suit.  To time 2nd only to Jonathan (Davenport) was very special to me.“

 

The team also made the decision to travel just a little bit more regionally, believing the only way to get better was to challenge themselves by racing a variety of speedways.  The team made stops at five other regional tracks:  Selinsgrove Speedway, Williams Grove Speedway, Hagerstown Speedway, Path Valley Speedway and Bedford Speedway.  As the season progressed and the team showed more consistency and competitiveness, the approach seemed to be proving itself. 

 

 

 

2022 Plans

 

Fans can expect a similar schedule for Berry and his team in 2022.  Home base will still be Port Royal Speedway and they still want to travel regionally to expand their knowledge, while hitting some of the more lucrative events at the same time.

 

Berry was asked how he will follow up on his 2021 victory and what his goals are for 2022.

 

“Winning multiple races in a season is tough around here.  Sure, we want to do that, but for me it’s not about the number of wins, it’s about quality wins.  We’ve won a $3,000 weekly show, so now I’d like to win a $5,000-to-win show.  If you do that, it typically means you’ve won a special show or a touring series race, and that would mean we beat the best.  That’s a quality win and you know you’ve really accomplished something“, Berry explained.

 

Performance Racing Industry Trade Show

 

Last week, several members of ABR made the trek west to Indianapolis, IN for the annual 3-day PRI Show.  The event is so large, the product displays and educational seminars consume all available space in both the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts.

 

Teams descend on Indianapolis for the event each year to see the latest technology and newest products, while maintaining existing partnerships and developing new ones as well.

 

“Our number one priority at PRI is to thank our current partners and the people who provide the products we use.  We thank them for their support and for everything they’ve done for us.  Our number two priority is to explore the new products that might make us better and hopefully we develop some new relationships and new partners along the way.  I think we accomplished all those goals this year’s trip”, Berry shared as he prepared to travel back to PA after the show.

 

Berry and his team will spend the next two months rebuilding their car to be ready to start the new season.  That new season is a mere 83 days away as of this writing.  Port Royal Speedway opens Sunday, March 6th.

Kyle Reinhardt Closes Out 2021 with Top 10 in Sprint Showdown

Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team have already been thinking about the 2022 season for several weeks, if not longer.  There is much to plan and coordinate to prepare for a season that is comprised of over 70 races spanning 9 months as theirs did in 2021.  Before they could fully turn their attention to that task, there was one more race to run.  The traditional final 410 race in the country:  The Capitol Renegade Sprint Showdown at BAPS Motor Speedway.

 

11/13:  Sprint Showdown, BAPS Motor Speedway – Newberrytown, PA 

     (38 cars, Qualifying: 2nd in Group 2 & 3rd overall, Heat: 2nd, A-main: 7th)

 

The November weather in Central Pennsylvania is notoriously unpredictable to say the least.  Some years fans are able to show up to the season finale in t-shirts, other years winter coats are the apparel of choice.

 

2021 brought its own memorable combination of elements.  Rain and wind moved in during the late morning, making for a chilly autumn day.  It didn’t matter though.  This was the final race of the season, so when the weather passed, and the sun popped out briefly in the

midafternoon, the race teams, and loyal Posse race fans poured into the facility, equipped
with the aforementioned winter coats.

 

The Capitol Renegade, Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants, Henry’s Wrecker Service No.91 was one of 38 cars signed in for action Saturday afternoon. 

 

Format

The annual season-ending event employs a somewhat unique format that uses a pill draw to divide the field into groups of 8-10 cars each.  Teams remain in their groups for hot laps, time trials and heat races.  To allow for spacing during time trials, half of each group takes to the track at a time for three green flag laps under the clock.  Heat races would be 10 laps, lined up by time but with the top 4 inverted, and the top five finishers transferring directly to the A-main.  The winner and the fastest qualifier go to the redraw.

 

Qualifying Recap

Reinhardt’s pill draw landed him in the first half of a very stout qualifying group number two.  The Neptune City, NJ native was up to the task though as he attacked the 4-tenths mile oval, turning in a lap of 14.736.  It turned out to be 2nd best in his group and 3rd best in the entire field.

 

The inversion meant Reinhardt would take the green in his heat race from the 3rd starting spot.  On the initial start, Logan Schuchart claimed the lead and Freddie Rahmer kept Reinhardt at bay in 3rd.  In the midst of lap two, Tyler Ross got upside down, bringing out the red.  On the ensuing restart, Reinhardt charged hard and wrestled 2nd away from Rahmer.  He then set his sights on Schuchart and the lead but couldn’t get close enough to challenge and settled for the runner up finish.

 

Main Event Recap

Reinhardt’s qualifying efforts garnered him the 10th starting spot in the 30-lap A-main.  The Capitol Renegade, J&J Auto Racing mount was competitive from the start.  Reinhardt quickly found his rhythm and began moving forward.  He was able to claim 9th early on, then 8th by lap ten.

 

Despite being tested by a couple restarts, which are double-file by rule at BAPS Motor Speedway, Kyle managed to hold his ground.  By lap 21 Reinhardt had claimed 7th from Jacob Allen.  Allen, a World of Outlaws regular, didn’t give up easily though and the pair exchanged  sliders for several laps until Reinhardt finally claimed the spot for good.  From that point on, there were no cautions to bunch the field and Reinhardt wasn’t close enough to take a shot at Anthony Macri for 6th.

 

“We had good speed all night and we raced well.  We were better than we had been in recent outings, so that’s a good way to finish the season.  We’ve been getting back to basics and giving the car what it needs.  It’s been responding well, so my confidence is up too as a result“, Reinhardt shared.

 

“Looking back on 2021 now that we are done, it wasn’t a bad year for us.  It was tough going on the road for the first time.  We kept plugging away though and we learned a lot as a result of traveling and seeing a lot of new places for the first time”, Kyle reflected.  

 

“We got our first All Star win and our first quick time.  We had some good nights, but we also had some tough ones.  I feel like we left a lot on the table“, Reinhardt concluded.

  

Up Next

Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team plan to hit the road with the All Star Circuit of Champions again in 2022, so the offseason will be short and very busy.  Preparing a shop, a hauler, and multiple cars for the grind of a long season requires a lot of planning and coordination.  Often teams work as hard or harder from November to February as they do during the season.

 

“We are still looking to fill the crew chief role on the team, so hopefully we can do that soon.  I’m looking forward to 2022.  We know we can take what we learned this year and improve.  We already have goals.  Obviously, we want to be more consistent, but we also believe we can win multiple races and put ourselves in the top 5 in All Star points“, Reinhardt said.

Zach Newlin Displays 2022 Potential at BAPS Motor Speedway

Zach Newlin and Pryde Motorsports raced together seven times since the new pairing formed at the start of September.  They made a couple headlines in that short time.  There was a Hard Charger award at Port Royal Speedway in the Labor Day Classic and there was Newlin’s first World of Outlaws A-main a few weeks later.  To learn all they could for 2022, they were trying to make good use of their short 2021 season together.  They certainly weren’t going to pass up the opportunity to race one more time before spending the winter in the race shop.

 

11/13:  Sprint Showdown, BAPS Motor Speedway – Newberrytown, PA

     (38 cars, Qualifying 2nd in group 2 & 4th overall, Heat 5th, A-main 20th)

 

Each November, the Sprint Showdown at BAPS Motor Speedway, which is traditionally the final 410 sprint car show in the country, brings unpredictable weather.  The 2021 edition was no different.  Rain and wind moved in during the late morning to combine with chilly autumn temperatures.

 

Long story short, it didn’t matter.  This was Central Pennsylvania, and it was the final race of the season, so when the weather passed and the sun popped out briefly in the midafternoon, the race teams and fans poured into the facility, equipped with multiple layers of warm clothing.

 

The Pryde Motorsports No.29, sponsored by Del Grosso’s Foods, Gio’s BBQ, Robert Lee Jr. Trucking, R&B Auto Proz, Quality Masonry, Grove Financial & Associates, Dillman Hauling, Ron’s RV Sales, and Strange Oval was one of 38 cars signed in to compete.  

 

Format

Qualifying Recap

Zach Newlin’s draw placed him in the second half of the 4th and final qualifying group.  Considering how a track typically slows down during qualifying because of deteriorating grip, a late draw such as that isn’t ideal.

 

None of that seemed to matter to the wheelman known as ‘Zach Daddy’.  He proceeded to blister the 4-tenths mile clay oval in 14.773 seconds, which was good enough for 2nd in his group and 4th quickest out of the entire field of 38 cars. 

 

Newlin’s heat race didn’t go as well as planned.  He hoped to leverage his 3rd starting spot to earn a mid-pack starting spot in the feature, however a tight condition led to the loss of a couple spot.  The Millerstown, PA native held on to transfer to the A-main but would start 20th in the 30-lap finale.

 

Main Event Recap

Knowing they would be racing in heavy traffic from the start, the Pryde Motorsports team made adjustments that would hopefully give Newlin a chance to move forward.  It didn’t take more than a few laps to figure out they had over-adjusted.  Zach fought a tight race car throughout the event and ultimately managed to do no more than hold his ground for a 20th place finish.

 

“We had really good speed earlier in the night and the car was handling great” Newlin shared.  “We just got too tight with the adjustments we made after that, so we learned something for next time.  I want to thank Allen (Pryde) for giving me this opportunity and all the partners who help make this possible for us.  We couldn’t do this without Del Grosso Foods, Grove Financial & Associates, Dillman Hauling, Gio’s BBQ, Ron’s RV Sales, FK Shocks, Strange Oval Torsion Bars, and Newlin Bar Service“, Newlin commented.   

 

“We had a fast car last night.  Just wasn’t able to capitalize.  Next time.  This is how you learn.  Little by little“, said car owner Allen Pryde Sunday, reflecting on the team’s night at BAPS.

 

Up Next

Pryde Motorsports, along with brothers Zach and Lance Newlin, are already getting things in place for the 2022 season.   Saturday’s outing at BAPS Motor Speedway was a shake-down of a new Triple-X car, plus another car and its components are being refreshed.  The team expects to enter next season well-prepared to run Royal Speedway on a weekly basis.

Reinhardt Posts Successful World Finals Weekend

Shows Speed Against Stout Field

Three years had elapsed since Kyle Reinhardt’s last, and only, attempt at the World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.  That trip in 2018 was full of challenges.  Engine issues on qualifying night put the Capitol Renegade team behind the eight ball from the start.  Combine that with the lack of a notebook to turn to for the track, and you get what’s politely called ‘a learning opportunity’.

 

When the team returned to take part in the 2021 edition of The World Finals, they had a lot more experience in their pocket than they did three years earlier.  Not only did they have a couple Central PA victories on their resume, but they had also just completed their first season on the road with the All Star Circuit of Champions, which included their first ASCoC series win.

 

11/4:  World Finals Night 1, The Dirt Track at Charlotte – Concord, NC

 

Persistent rain Thursday forced officials to cancel qualifying night and alter the order of events on Friday and Saturday night to include time trials.

 

With nearly twice as many cars pit-side as the A-main lineup would hold, and a quality field at that, it would be no easy task to make the World of Outlaw sanctioned main event either night.

 

11/5:  World Finals Night 2, The Dirt Track at Charlotte – Concord, NC 

          (46 cars, Qualifying 8th in Flight 2, Heat 3rd, A-main 14th)

 

Friday’s 46 car field was split into two flights for time trials.  Late that afternoon, Kyle Reinhardt rolled the Capitol Renegade, Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants, Henry’s Wrecker Service No.91 onto the clay at The Dirt Track as the first car in Flight 2 for qualifying.  He laid down a solid lap that placed him 8th in the group and handed him the 4th starting spot in heat number four.  

 

The top five finishers were slated to transfer to the A-main from each 8-lap heat race, but each spot closer to the front held increasing value because it meant four spots better in the starting lineup for the night’s finale .  Reinhardt charged into 3rd on the opening lap and held onto it to the checkered flag, putting himself and the Capitol Renegade team into their first World Finals A-main.

 

Reinhardt lined up 12th for the 30-lap main event and survived numerous battles to hold on to a mid-pack spot, eventually bringing it home in 14th.  

 

“Our trip here a few years ago was frustrating.  We had issues from the time we unloaded.  We probably should have loaded up and gone home after the first night that year, but we battled through it and learned everything we could.  I think that effort paid off tonight“, Reinhardt commented.

 

11/6:  World Finals Night 3, The Dirt Track at Charlotte – Concord, NC  

          (43 cars, Qualifying 20th in Flight 2, Heat 4th, A-main 20th)

 

Saturday’s World of Outlaws season and World Finals finale was moved up to an early afternoon start due to a deteriorating nighttime forecast in the Charlotte region.  43 teams returned to compete.  

 

Once again, per the Outlaw format, the field was divided into two flights by random draw for qualifying under the clock.  Kyle Reinhardt found himself in flight two again, but this time a little deeper in the order.  He hit the track 14th in the flight and had good speed once again, however a minor issue cost him a few tenths on the clock and left him 20th in the standings when the dust settled.

 

The team quickly went to work resolving the issue and had Reinhardt ready to go to work from the 10th starting spot in the 4th heat.  With the top five transferring to the A-main again, and the remainder of the field being relegated to the B-main to compete for the final four spots in the main event, the Neptune City, NJ native had his work cut out for him.

 

Reinhardt and his J&J Auto Racing No.91 were up to the challenge.  He charged into 6th on the opening lap using the high side and continued to press forward, claiming the 4th spot by lap three.  Kyle would hold on to that spot, completing an impressive recovery from a disappointing qualifying time and putting himself and his Capitol Renegade team into their second consecutive World Finals A-main through a heat race.

 

“We were good both nights.  We had a minor issue in qualifying Saturday that put us at the back of our heat race, but we were able to correct it and show our speed by going 10th to 4th and putting ourselves in the show.  We went backwards in the feature unfortunately, but we figured out why.  We’ll put it in the notebook, learn from it and be even better next time“, Reinhardt concluded.

 

The 2021 World Finals experience was quite different than 2018 for Reinhardt.  The results are a good indication of how far this team has come over the last few seasons.  As they continue to build their notebook and put the right pieces in place, they are poised to be a consistent front-runner wherever they go.

Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team will close out the 2021 season back home in PA at BAPS Motor Speedway on Saturday, November 13th.  The Capitol Renegade Sprint Showdown presented by FK Rod Ends features the 410 Sprint Cars ($5,000 to win), 358 Modifieds ($4,000 to win), and two Enduro races (each $1,000 to win).  Racing begins at 3:00 PM.

Kyle Reinhardt Wraps Up Rookie All Star Season at Fremont

Back in January 2021, there was no doubt in Kyle Reinhardt’s mind that he and his Capitol Renegade team would face new challenges and learn a lot in their upcoming inaugural season on the road with the All Star Circuit of Champions.  They were about to go to school and build quite a notebook.

 

Just over eight months later, the All Star season was poised to fade into the rear view mirror and Reinhardt’s freshman year, so to speak, would be complete.  There was just one more weekend to study, and it took the team to Fremont, Ohio.

 

10/8:  Jim & Joanne Ford Classic Prelim Night at Fremont Speedway – Fremont, OH

 

The story Friday night was all about Mother Nature.  Storms passed through the northern Ohio area, bringing rain and hail.  Despite their best efforts, the track crew was unable to overcome the weather, forcing officials to cancel the program.

10/9:  Jim & Joanne Ford Classic at Fremont Speedway – Fremont, OH 

          (48 cars, Qualifying 9th in group D, Heat 8th, C-main 2nd, A-main 18th)

 

Saturday brought better weather and 48 teams to compete for the $10,000 winner’s share in the Jim & Joanne Ford Classic at Fremont Speedway. It was the All Star Circuit of Champions season finale.  

 

The large car count meant the field was aligned into five groups.  Teams would qualify and heat race against those in their group.  Kyle Reinhardt was the 5th to hit the track in group D but the resulting time of 13.781 was 9th quickest in the group.

 

Only the top four finishers would transfer from each 8-lap heat race to the A-main, so Reinhardt had a tall order in front of him from his 9th starting spot in heat number four.  His 8th place finish relegated him to the C-main, leaving him with an even taller order.

 

Reinhardt was able to move his Capitol Renegade, Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants, Henry’s Wrecker Service No.91 forward in the 10-lap C-main, finishing 2nd and transferring to the B-main.

 

The team opted for a series provisional to start the A-main, bypassing the last chance qualifying race.   The Neptune City, NJ native was able to go +7 from his 25th starting spot in the A-main, recording an 18th place finish.  

 

Reflecting on the 2021 ASCoC Season

 

“It was definitely a learning year.  I learned; the whole team learned…every night.  We saw a lot of new places.  In the long run it will make me and the team better.  It already has honestly“, Reinhardt shared candidly.  

 

Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team appeared in 37 All Star features and 16 dashes, finishing 8th in series points.  The team captured victories in 7 heat races, 2 dashes and 1 A-main during the 2021 season.

 

“We had some good moments, like our first win, but of course we expected more of our team.  Going into the season we weren’t sure what to expect.  After Florida we felt like we should be able to compete for a spot somewhere in the middle of the top 10 in points.  We fell short of that, largely because of all the new challenges we faced in the early part of the season.  We missed features because we didn’t solve those problems as quickly as we needed to.  It was a whole new team learning to work together and seeing new tracks all at the same time.  No excuses.  That’s just how it was“, Reinhardt surmised.

 

Up Next

 

Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team will race close to home, making a stop at BAPS Motor Speedway on Saturday, October 23rd.  It will be their final tune up before heading to The World Finals in Charlotte in early November.

Zach Newlin Makes First Career World of Outlaws A-Main

As a race car driver, Zach Newlin has had many years of success at various levels, but when his 2021 410 sprint car season opened in Pennsylvania, something wasn’t working.  Newlin and the team he started the season with were not gelling.  It happens in racing.  A lot of combinations just don’t work.  A few do.

 

The Millerstown, PA native was fired from that ride and turned his focus back to 358 sprint cars, wondering if he would get another shot at the top level.  That chapter left Newlin in a bad place mentally, his confidence shaken.

 

Fortunately, the next chapter of his story requires no sugar coating. 

 

Friday 10/8:  38 cars, Qualifying 19th in flight 1, Heat 8th, B-main 5th

 

Having recently joined forces, Zach Newlin and the Pryde Motorsports team only had four races under their belt coming into the 2-day World of Outlaws event at Port Royal Speedway.  Those races had only resulted in a single A-main appearance.  That one appearance did result in the Hard Charger Award at Port Royal’s Labor Day Classic, but the new pairing knew it would take time to learn to work together to reach their potential.

 

A high quality field of 38 teams were on hand Friday night at ‘The Speed Palace’ for The Nittany Showdown preliminary night action.  The World of Outlaws format split the field into two flights of 19 cars for time trials, which would set the lineups for four 8-lap heat races.

 

Newlin was the 18th driver to hit the track for qualifying.  He turned in a disappointing lap that left him last in his flight.  It would be a tough road the rest of the night.

 

The Pryde Motorsports team hurried to make changes before rolling out to their 10th starting spot for heat number one.  The top five finishers advanced to the A-main, while the remainder of the field, including Newlin who came home in 8th, were relegated to the B-main for a final shot at making the main event.

 

Newlin, a Millerstown, PA native, took the green for the 12-lap B-main from the 9th position and immediately went to work.  The top four finishers would transfer to claim the final four starting spots in the $10,000 to win, 25-lap A-main.  

 

It was clear the team and Newlin were both applying what they were learning as the night went on because the Del Grosso’s Foods, Gio’s BBQ, Robert Lee Jr. Trucking, R&B Auto Proz, Quality Masonry, Grove Financial & Associates, Dillman Hauling, Ron’s RV Sales, Strange Oval No.29 was on the move.  

 

Zach methodically worked his way through the field and appeared poised to accomplish the unthinkable.  Making a World of Outlaws A-main after qualifying last in your flight is nearly impossible and certainly uncommon.  Newlin came up one spot short, finishing 5th.  Had there been a late race caution to tighten up the field, it appeared quite possible he would have pulled it off.

 

The night ended one step short of the goal, but the team loaded up with smiles on their faces after making great strides during the show.  They would be in a much better position going into Saturday night’s finale.

 

Saturday 10/9:  38 cars, Qualifying 7th in flight 2, Heat 4th, A-main 27th 

 

Saturday night rolled around and once again 38 teams signed in to compete.  The Nittany Showdown finale offered $15,000 to the victor.  The format would be the same as the prior night.  For the second consecutive night, Zach Newlin would take to the track for his laps under the clock late in his flight.  This time he fired the engine to go out 16th in flight two.  

 

The night would not be the same in every way though.  Newlin powered his way around the big, fairgrounds half-mile in 15.626 seconds, claiming the 7th quickest lap in his flight, a mere 0.113 behind Donny Schatz and 0.120 behind Anthony Macri.

 

The solid qualifying effort handed Newlin the 4th starting spot in the third heat race.  Once again, the top five finishers would transfer to the A-main.  Zach would just need to hang on to one of those spots.  He did better than that.  He got steadily quicker as the race went on, looking like a veteran wheeling the high line.  Newlin pulled away from veterans Wayne Johnson and Danny Dietrich, besting Johnson by 1.1 seconds at the checkers and putting himself in his first career World of Outlaws A-main.

 

The performance caught the attention of the Dirtvision team, the group who broadcasts all Outlaw races live.  They selected Zach Daddy to be interviewed on the front stretch following the accomplishment.  As reporter Chase Raudman asked him how he felt about what he had just done, Newlin let out a celebratory shout that could be heard anywhere on the Juniata County Fairgrounds, and maybe beyond.  In an instant, the weight of everything that had happened earlier in 2021 was gone.

 

“Oh man, this is awesome!  I still don’t even have 20 races under my belt in a 410” an ecstatic Newlin told Raudman.  “We started the year out rough, got fired from one ride, then Allen called me up for this car.  One door closes and a really good one opens up.  I’m so grateful.“

 

Newlin earned the 14th starting spot in the 30-lap A-main.  At the drop of the green, he took to the high side in turn one.  In heavy traffic another car slid up across directly in front of Newlin’s No.29, taking the air off the nose of the car.  For a split second, the front end got light and Newlin was unable to steer away from the wall.  He slapped the wall with the right side of the car, then managed to get off the wall and continue on.  He lost several positions during the ordeal but tried to soldier on.  It wasn’t to be thought because the W-link had broken on contact and left his machine limping, forcing him pit-side after six laps, officially placing him 27th in the final rundown.

 

“My mind wasn’t in a good place from the stuff I dealt with in the beginning of the year, but I feel good now.  I’m excited as hell” a happy Newlin shared.  “I want to thank Allen (Pryde) and all the partners who help make this possible for us.  We couldn’t do this without Del Grosso Foods, Gio’s BBQ, Grove Financial & Associates, Dillman Hauling, Ron’s RV Sales, FK Shocks, Strange Oval Torsion Bars, and Newlin Bar Service.  I also want to say a special thanks to Jeff Halligan and Kyle Defibaugh for coming out and helping this weekend.  Their help and tips were extremely valuable“, Newlin commented. 

 

Car owner Allen Pryde expressed his thanks to all the team’s supporters via a Facebook post and offered a peek at the team’s 2022 plans with Newlin.  “Looking forward to a great season next year.  Our plans are to be at Port Royal each week“, Pryde posted.

 

Zach Newlin and Pryde Motorsports rolling into Port Royal together in that open trailer next season is sure to be a story to watch.  When they win a race, I have a feeling a microphone won’t be necessary for the folks in the town of Port Royal to hear the excitement when Newlin climbs from the car.

Two races remain on the 2021 schedule for Zach Newlin and Pryde Motorsports.  They will head to BAPS Motor Speedway for Saturday afternoon shows on October 23rd and November 13th to continue building their notebook for the 2022 season.
