2021 Season Provides Welcome Fresh Start for ABR

New Partner Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop Joins Team

Mifflin, PA – March 5, 2021

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

To say the entire team at Austin Berry Racing is looking forward to the upcoming season would be a significant understatement.  2020 was a year pretty much everyone wants to put behind them for numerous reasons, and ABR is no different.  The struggles of last season are well documented.

The team is determined to return to the more consistent level of performance they had reached in 2019, when they finished 6th in Port Royal Speedways season championship standings.  Two keys to ABR’s fresh start for the upcoming season are a new partner and a new engine program.

Shade Gap, PA business Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, who provides custom butchering and packaging for beef, pork, and venison, has joined the team as a key new partner.  This new partnership will help the team freshen some equipment for the new campaign.

In an effort to stabilize one of the most important pieces of their program, the team has joined with Hagerstown, MD based A&C Racing Engines to manage their engines.  In business for over 20 years, A&C is a complete automotive machine shop, specializing in performance engines and offering dyno services.

Returning for the 2021 season are several long-time supporters as well.  Berry’s Siding and Seamless Gutter,  MS Shock Therapy, Nathan Berry Beef Farm, Ontime Body and Graphic, and Swift Springs all return for the new season.

The goal is to race a smart schedule that provides us with an opportunity to grow, improve and get the most out of our equipment.“, stated Austin Berry in a recent phone conversation about the team’s plans.  Exactly how the year will unfold in terms of schedule isn’t crystal clear yet, but ABR has laid out plans that include following the ULMS Racing Series South Region schedule, numerous Port Royal Speedway events and several other notable shows in the region.  They will evaluate where they are at performance-wise around the end of April or early May and adjust the schedule from there, if necessary.

Look for the Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, MS Shock Therapy, Nathan Berry Beef Farm, A&C Racing Engines,  Ontime Body & Graphic, Swift Springs, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, VP Racing Fuels, Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86 to kick off their season Saturday, March 13th at Port Royal Speedway.  The following week they will kick off the ULMS South season back at The Speed Palace.

ABR’s 2020: The kind of year a team must overcome to savor eventual success.

Mifflin, PA – February 15, 2021 – By Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

2020 was a challenging year in many ways for everyone. ABR’s season was no different.

After a successful 2019 campaign that saw them finish 6th in Port Royal Speedway’s season championship points and earn the Most Improved Driver award, the team worked hard in the offseason to make more improvements and seize on their momentum.

There were high hopes for the Rocket Chassis XR1, Swift Springs, MS Shock Therapy, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Nathan Berry Beef Farm No.86 heading into 2020. The season wasn’t easy. It seemed everything that could go wrong did. It was the kind of year a team must overcome to savor eventual success.

Despite all of that, there were high points and positives. There were small victories some nights, there were supportive fans, and there were the kids. The young fans always brought a reason to smile and to keep working hard.

Before we turn our attention to the upcoming 2021 season, let’s take a look back at 2020 and fuel the fire inside by remembering why we started this whole thing in the first place.

#TeamA2D Upcoming Weekend Outlook

The Latest Info on Newlin Racing and Austin Berry Racing

Harrisburg, PA – September 24, 2020By Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Friday night, September 25th, will find the Newlin Racing 358 sprint car team at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, PA. The 358 Sprints will be in action for the final time in 2020 at the historic facility as part of the 410 Sprint Car Outlaw Tune-Up.

Zach Newlin will be looking for back-to-back wins in the Smith Concrete & Construction / Heather Sims, Realtor / J.W. Smith Auto Body / T&M Homebuilders, Inc. / Ron’s RV Sales / Kirby Kitner Excavating / Hammaker Racing Engines / The Podium Awards / Advanced Septic Services / Walker Performance Filtration #11z, having visited victory lane the last time the division was in action, back on September 4th at “The Grove”.

Newlin currently sits 7th in the standings, just 90 points out of 6th and 105 points out of 3rd. He is also the only driver other than Derek Locke and Kevin Nouse to reach victory lane in 2020 on the Mechanicsburg half-mile.

Unfortunately, Austin Berry Racing will not be in action this weekend as neither of the team’s motors are race-ready. Repairs to their primary motor have not been completed and the backup motor is ‘lapped-out’ and in need of a refresh.

The team’s goal is to get their Rocket Chassis XR1, Swift Springs, MS Shock Therapy, Hershey Racing Engines, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Nathan Berry Beef Farm #86 to the track at least one or two more times before the 2020 season ends.

ABR Lucas Oil Weekend Recap

A singer once sang, “Sometime’s You’re the Windshield, Sometimes You’re the Bug”

Port Royal, PA – August 31, 2020By Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Mary Chapin Carpenter’s 1992 hit must have been playing somewhere. The song begins appropriately.

Well it’s a strange old game, you learn it slow
One step forward and it’s back you go
You’re standing on the throttle
You’re standing on the brake
In the groove ’til you make a mistake

The chorus gets right to the point.

Sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes you’re the bug

Those lyrics pretty much sum up Austin Berry Racing’s 3-day foray with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series at Port Royal Speedway. ABR came into the event as prepared as they could be and were coming off a top 10 qualifying run in the last super late model event held at The Speed Palace. Despite that positive momentum, by the time the Lucas Oil sanctioned event was over, the team had struggled through nightly challenges and did not make the field for the two feature events that were able to be completed.

Nobody’s making excuses. The 3-day show August 27-29 brought a range of challenges: rain delays, less than optimal pill draws, mechanical issues and conditions that were hard on equipment. Sometimes there was only time for repairs instead of setup adjustments. A team can put in an effort that goes above and beyond but sometimes it just doesn’t all come together to equal the results that would seem to be fair payback.

What do you do when you face challenges like that? You try to move past the frustration as quickly as you can. You pay attention so you can learn. You remain positive. You continue working hard to apply that knowledge. You continue to believe in yourself and the team. You remember to give back to the fans. You thank the people who get you to the track. You keep smiling.

Austin Berry and the ABR team are doing all of the above and will bring their Rocket Chassis XR1, Swift Springs, MS Shock Therapy, Hershey Racing Engines, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Nathan Berry Beef Farm #86 back at Port Royal Speedwayon Saturday, September 5th to compete in the the ULMS sanctioned Butch Renninger Memorial, as well as the ULMS makeup feature from August 8th.

ABR Ready to Take On the Lucas Oil Dirt Series in Rumble By the River

Three Consecutive Nights at Port Royal Speedway Starts Thursday

Mifflin, PA – August 27, 2020By Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

A large, highly competitive field of super late models is expected for the lucrative 3-day show at Port Royal Speedway featuring the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.

Thursday’s feature will be 30 laps and pay $10,000 to win and $800 to start. Friday night will conclude with a 40-lap A-main and will pay $12,000 to the winner and $1000 to start. Saturday night’s finale will cover 50-laps in distance, paying $15,000 to the winner and $1000 to start.

Austin Berry will pilot the ABR Rocket Chassis XR1, Swift Springs, MS Shock Therapy, Hershey Racing Engines, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Nathan Berry Beef Farm #86 against the expected stout field. Berry knows how difficult it can be to qualify for shows like this with such a high quality field from across the USA and more than twice as many cars in the pits as there are starting spots in the feature each night, so the main goal each night will be to make the show. The good news is the last time he hit the track, the car was the best it had been all season. They were quick and competitive, so the team enters this week’s action with a positive mindset.

The anticipation for the event is building rapidly. The campground started filling up early Wednesday morning and as of Thursday morning more than 200 campers were on site and 25 late model teams had already entered the pits to prepare. That number is predicted to double by the time teams hit the track Thursday evening.

For more information on gate times, admission prices and format for the event, go to PortRoyalSpeedway.com. Fans with a yearly subscription to LucasOilRacing.tv will be able to watch the action live via the website or app at 6:30pm Eastern each night.

Mother Nature Halts Promising Night for Austin Berry

ABR Finds the Handling They Have Been Missing

Port Royal, PA – August 1, 2020By Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Despite the rain that began to fall just before the night’s features were about to roll off, forcing ABR to load up and find cover, Austin Berry still had something to smile about at Port Royal Speedway Saturday night. All the hard work and long hours in the shop analyzing team notes from past races and a recent mid-week test session are beginning to pay off.

“That’s the best the car has felt this season”, Berry said while waiting to see if the weather was going to officially end their night. He added, “I could move around, change lanes and run just about anywhere I wanted…and the car still felt balanced, which is something we’ve been missing this year.”

The evidence collected earlier that evening certainly seemed to support that claim. 34 Super Late Models were signed in for the ULMS show that would pay $3,000 to the victor. In Group 1 qualifying, Berry logged the 8th quickest time of the 17 cars in his group. The division is ultra competitive and the slightest mistake on a lap can drastically change your night. As proof, consider this stat from Saturday night: only 0.762 seconds separated 1st from 10th in his group and Berry missed 7th by a mere 0.009 seconds.

A big reason ABR was able be ready to compete in the ULMS event Saturday night was the tremendous effort by and support from Joey Hershey of Hershey Racing Engines, who made sure the team’s primary motor was repaired in a short span of time from the failure that occurred in their previous outing. Both car owner Ken Berry and driver Austin Berry expressed their sincere thanks to Joey and Hershey Racing Engines (HRE) for their continued support. ABR has had a great relationship with HRE for several years, especially through Joey’s father Curtis, who recently passed away. Curtis was always available and came through for the team when they needed him. It’s clear Joey is cut from the same cloth and will continue that tradition.

The solid qualifying run for the ABR Rocket Chassis XR1, Swift Springs, MS Shock Therapy, Hershey Racing Engines, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Nathan Berry Beef Farm #86 meant they would line up outside row 2 in the 4th position for heat two. Austin launched around the high side of turns 1 and 2 on the opening lap to charge into 2nd place. He settled in there to pursue leader Max Blair. Bryan Bernheisel wasn’t ready to concede the final redraw spot though and challenged Berry, recapturing 2nd place a couple laps later. The pair went back and forth multiple times, including exchanging the spot twice on the final lap, with Berry ultimately missing a redraw spot by a slim 0.21 seconds but his 3rd place finish was good enough to transfer to the feature event.

Berry was slated to line up outside row 5 in the 10th starting spot for the main event but unfortunately they will have to wait until September 5th to run that finale because Mother Nature intervened and ended the night before any of the feature events could turn a lap.

Some Good News for ABR

Motor Issue Was Not Major; Return Set for Saturday

Mifflin, PA – July 30, 2020By Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

We now rejoin our regularly scheduled race season. When we last left you, Austin Berry had a good night ruined by engine failure. While you (or we) have been gone, Hershey Racing Engines got to the bottom of the issue and made the necessary repairs. Fortunately the issue was not as disastrous as it could have been.

The team will have their primary bullet back under the hood of their Rocket Chassis XR1 in time for the August 1st ULMS Super Late Model show at Port Royal Speedway, where they will compete for the $3,000 winner’s share.

Coming off a night that saw the Swift Springs, MS Shock Therapy, Hershey Racing Engines, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Nathan Berry Beef Farm #86 register the 7th quickest lap of a 32 car field, the ABR team hopes to continue to build on that as we enter the late summer portion of the schedule.

The 2020 season has been a bit disjointed for everyone. It’s been difficult to get into a rhythm and make progress. It’s been no different for Berry. Putting together a consistent home stretch to the season would not only be rewarding on its own merit, it would be extremely valuable toward knowing how to evaluate his equipment and plan for 2021.

A Sweet Night Gone Sour for ABR

Hard Work + Test Session = Positive Results

Port Royal, PA – July 12, 2020By Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Recent weeks have been filled with a lot of activity in the ABR camp. That activity was born from a determination to solve their handling mysteries and get back to where they were in the past with their Rocket Chassis XR1. The team has been putting in the hours in the shop, working with partners to find answers and most recently participated in a test session to gather some data about what is working and what isn’t.

Saturday night July 11th at Port Royal Speedway, ABR was among 32 super late models that signed in to try to claim of the $3000 top prize at the end of the night. The evening got off to a great start when Austin registered a lap of 20.093 in time trials, good enough for 7th quickest in the solid field. That lap alone seemed to serve as validation that the efforts the team has been making were paying off.

It was far too early to read too much into the good lap though. Time trials call for a slightly more aggressive setup in the car than race conditions do, so the team made the necessary adjustments to prepare for their heat race. Austin’s qualifying run put the Swift Springs, MS Shock Therapy, Hershey Racing Engines, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Nathan Berry Beef Farm #86 on the pole of heat 3 along side Ross Robinson. Five would qualify from each of the four 8-lap heats, with the top 2 from each event going to the redraw, thus guaranteeing the competitor a top 8 starting spot in the feature event. So far it appeared to be a sweet evening in the making.

At the drop of the green in heat 3 with Berry on the inside of the front row, he would enter turn one with a slight edge on Robinson, drive a little deeper into the corner and attempt to slide up to the higher groove in front of the 7r. He didn’t quite have enough momentum though and settled into second to begin his pursuit. On lap 2 after building some rhythm, he began to close slightly on the leader, indicating a battle for the lead may develop. The caution waved before the field could complete the lap and that’s when things suddenly and unexpectedly went sour for ABR. The two dreaded words: engine failure.

The motor produced sounds it shouldn’t and the power went away. Berry quickly shut it down to try to save it from any further harm and he coasted to a stop in turn 1, ending a promising night. Gregg Satterlee went on to defeat Ross Robinson and Kyle Lee in the feature event later that evening.

The good news for ABR: the team has clearly made significant progress during the past month. As a direct result of their hard work, research and testing, the car and its pilot were smoother, faster and more consistent Saturday night than that combination has been all season.

The bad news for ABR: until the motor is out of the car, torn down and examined, they won’t know the extent of the damage or how long it will keep them out of action. The best case scenario is probably a return when the super late models next compete at Port Royal Speedway on August 1st. Let’s not think about the worst case scenario for now.
