How Scaling Back in 2025 Allowed Austin Berry Racing to Refocus and Regain Momentum

At the end of 2024, when Austin Berry made the decision to scale back his schedule in 2025 so he could make sure personal priorities and racing budgets all fit together and result in a better long-term situation, he did so because he felt it was a better option than shutting down the race team completely for a year.

“The advancements in this sport are nonstop.  If you don’t stay in the game, you fall behind, and it takes a long time to catch up.  We considered taking a break for a season to focus on building our house and saving some money in the racing budget.  I felt we would fall behind if we did that, so we agreed on a scaled-back schedule so that we could keep up,” Berry explained.

WHEN A PLAN COMES TOGETHER

Skipping 2025 would have meant significant savings in tires, parts, and fuel, not to mention eliminating an engine refresh bill.  

It turned out Berry’s decision was more right than he even thought it would be.  Not only did Austin Berry Racing keep up, they gained ground.  From Berry’s perspective, which is shared by folks outside the team as well, the team improved more during their limited 2025 schedule than they had in 2023 and 2024 combined.

Berry competed in eleven super late model events in his family’s Tuscarora Restoration, Juniata Veterinary Clinic, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Dye It Rite, SRI Performance, VP Racing Fuels No.86, and six limited late model events during the 2025 season, the latter in the seat of the Bobby Dunn Racing No.34D.

“Racing in two different divisions at several different tracks, and getting a lot of laps at some places I didn’t have a lot of laps at before, like Bedford, made me a lot better behind the wheel,” Berry shared.

“I got a lot better at reacting to the car instead of basically memorizing how I thought I should drive the car at a particular track.  I learned to do different things in the seat and race the car, not the track.”

What Berry learned behind the wheel had a positive ripple effect in the pits, too, as he was able to give better feedback to his team to help make setup decisions.

Berry’s improvements were noticeable statistically.  He qualified much better against the clock than in recent years, and he scored three top ten finishes in his last six super late model races.  In the limited late model, he finished 11th or better in five of his six main events.

“In the super late model, the tone for the whole night is set by qualifying, so that’s what we have been focusing a lot of our energy on,” Berry said.

“That focus, combined with a lot more laps at some tracks than we have had before, paid off.  Look at Bedford Speedway’s Labor Day 55, for example.  I have never made that race before, despite trying several times.  This year, we came to Bedford several times, got a better notebook, and made the show through our heat race.”

“Those are the kind of things you have to measure progress by.  Progress isn’t just measured by wins.  It’s a building block process to keep getting better and better.  You celebrate achievements like that because you know they show what you are doing is working.”

Berry says expanding the team’s network of resources and people to lean on, and leveraging those things more frequently than in the past, was a big part of their improvements, too.

“I talked to the guys at Rocket Chassis a lot, plus our crew chief, Josh, was communicating with our partners at Penske Shocks almost every day.  Then we would talk within the team, sharing information and ideas as well.  We had more information, but yet we actually simplified things overall, which helped keep our decisions more in line week to week.  It kept us from straying away from what we knew,” Berry explained.

On the budget front, 2025 has to be considered a win as well.  Berry’s scaled-back schedule put few enough laps on their Cornette engine that a refresh will not be needed over the coming offseason, plus the team’s fuel, tires, and parts schedules were greatly reduced as well.

DOWN THE ROAD

Berry’s primary goal for 2026 is a pretty straightforward one.

“We want to get back to being a staple at local super late model races, so people aren’t wondering if we will be there,” Berry said.

“My wife and I had put off building our home for a few years, but this year we tackled that project, and it’s almost finished.  With that done, I will be able to go into next season with a clearer mind,” Berry said.

Not only that, but he’ll go into next season with a brand new, larger race shop, too.  The new shop, which is attached to the new house, was a part of that construction project.  The race shop will be the last part of the build to be completed, but the team will race out of that shop in 2026. 

Even though the on-track portion of the 2025 racing season is over for Berry, he never loses focus on taking care of his marketing partners.  The promotions continue, and attention to those relationships requires effort year-round.

Austin Berry Racing is also interested in working with new partners who are interested in having the team represent their business and promote their products and/or services during the 2026 season.

Berry also noted the team is looking to increase its equipment depth for 2026.  The goal is to have two rolling cars ready by summer.

“With what we saved on a motor refresh, and hopefully if we have a good 2026 kickoff fundraiser party, we will have enough to pick up a new chassis and make that our primary car,” Berry shared.

The team’s current Rocket XR1 would become a backup car.  

Beyond 2026, the team would like to add a second powerplant, which could be another super motor, or they might choose to add a crate motor to use in the second car.

“What our second motor might be will be something we decide down the road.  A crate motor would give us more opportunities to race, but having a backup for our super would be valuable too, of course,” Berry added.

Berry would like to do more traveling in the coming year or two.  The team upgraded their toter situation after the 2024 season as step one toward that goal.  They did so by selling the truck they had been using for many years and acquiring a larger pre-owned one.  

Another upgrade that would be key to traveling more is a larger trailer, which is something Berry hopes the team can acquire within three years.

“I would really like to venture out to some races outside our region.  There are some good-paying races that would make it justifiable for us to travel, plus I just have some races on my bucket list that I want to check off before I hang up my helmet.  Not that I’m planning on going anywhere soon, but you never know how long anything will last, so I want to work toward getting to some of these races in the next few years,” Berry commented.

PARTY TIME

The fan-favorite Austin Berry Racing season kickoff party will return for 2026.  It will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.  Tickets are on sale now, and fans can contact the team through social media for advance ticket purchases.  Those in attendance are treated to a great meal, raffles, and games throughout the evening, plus music and dancing after dinner.

The team held very popular and successful parties in 2023 and 2024 with nearly 300 people attending each year.  The team opted to skip the party in 2025.

“We were forced to sit out the entire second half of 2024 after an engine failure, and I just didn’t feel right having the party last year after our fans had been so generous at the 2024 kickoff, then we ended up not being able to race as much as we had planned,” Berry explained.

“We sure have had a lot of people ask about it, though, so we are looking forward to hanging out with everyone and having a good time again in January!”

Berry’s Changes Producing Results, Strategy Shaping Up for Team’s Future

Austin Berry has put together three top-ten finishes in his last four races.  Keep in mind, he has only entered nine races over the course of the past four months.

The past year has probably been the most unusual and unpredictable of Berry’s twenty-plus years in racing.  Circumstances have forced him to scale back and reprioritize, but they have also brought new perspective and new opportunities.  

If the Mifflin, PA driver had drawn up his master plan a year ago, none of those would have been a part of it, but he has adjusted, and it’s all working out.

THE EQUIPMENT

Berry shared some insight on the team’s first priority as they entered the 2025 season – simplifying their setup program for the Tuscarora Restoration, Juniata Veterinary Clinic, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Dye It Rite, SRI Performance, VP Racing Fuels No.86.

“We have focused on our equipment and not over-complicating our program.  From adjustments and front-end geometry settings to shock and spring setups, we have worked hard to simplify things.  We have also relied heavily on several of our partners like Swift Springs, Rocket Chassis, and Penske Racing Shocks,” Berry shared.

“I think we have finally reached a point where the things we are working with our partners to implement are for our program and my driving style, instead of trying to make things work for us that have worked for others.” 

Berry went on to explain that the simpler setups “have reduced the number of knobs available to turn, so there are fewer ways to dial ourselves out”.  In other words, there’s less chance they can get away from their baseline.

THE DRIVER

While the team’s reduced schedule has had been beneficial in terms of freeing up time for Berry to build his house, not to mention saving equipment and reducing expenses, the reduced seat time has not worked in Berry’s favor as a driver.  He explained how he feels he is not only less sharp behind the wheel but also in the pits.

“I think racing less has held us back some.  In time trials Saturday, I messed up, and there was a night or two when Josh and I realized we didn’t make adjustments we needed to,” Berry said.

When Berry’s super late model engine experienced a failure midseason in 2024, he found himself sidelined for the balance of the year.  That situation led to opportunities to drive a modified and a limited late model at the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025.

At the time, Berry debated whether to take the opportunities.  He wasn’t sure there was value in it for him, but after making several starts in each car, he feels quite different looking back on it.

I definitely think that making starts in those other divisions has helped, even though they are completely different chassis and engine combinations.  Any time you can get behind the wheel, it helps, and I’m extremely grateful to Bobby (Dunn) and his family for those opportunities!”, Berry commented.

“If anything, I think it has helped me to try and detach the driving from the setup and not try to predict what I think the car is going to do.  I tried to just go out and react to the car and drive it to the best of my ability.”

FINISHING OUT 2025

Berry originally had laid out a 2025 schedule that extended into October, but he and the team have decided they will wrap up their season with the Labor Day 55 at Bedford Speedway on August 29th and the Butch Renninger Memorial at Port Royal Speedway on August 30th.

“Reducing our schedule this season not only allowed my wife and me to get our house finished, but it also means we spent a lot less on tires, fuel, and parts.  It also means we won’t have an engine refresh bill this winter,” Berry explained.

“We’ve had a very productive season, and we feel we have more to lose by continuing into September than we have to gain.”

THE FUTURE

No engine bill over the winter will certainly help, but Berry doesn’t plan to put his program in neutral.  He has other ideas for the upcoming offseason and beyond.  Ideas that are aimed at continuing to build the team for future goals.

“We are talking about possibly getting a new, or newer, car over the winter.  That would open up the possibility for us to have a limited/crate car or even possibly a second super together in due time,” Berry shared.

“Depending on track schedules going forward, we would like to start traveling more.  I believe four or five new races or tracks a year would help me improve as a driver and help us make our equipment even better.”

The team may have scaled back in 2025, but that is not an indication of things to come.  Berry’s goal is to get back to racing more.  Not just more than recent years, but more than he has ever raced on dirt.

Progress and Patience: Austin Berry Quietly Making Gains with New Approach on and off the Track

Austin Berry’s super late model schedule has been a little sparse so far this season.  That has been mostly an intentional thing.

Berry and his wife have made building a house their priority this year, plus engine bills last season have Berry focused on a lighter schedule to make sure he doesn’t face another offseason engine refresh bill.

That said, a lighter schedule doesn’t mean he isn’t focused on improving his program, and it certainly doesn’t mean he has any less desire to be competitive and win races.

THINKING AHEAD

“Unfortunately, those are the kinds of decisions a small, family-owned team like ours has to make.  Last year was hard on our racing budget, so we have to play the long game and make sure our equipment lasts.”, Berry shared.

“We bought a piece of land several years ago, and my wife has patiently waited to build our house while we focused on racing.  This was the year to change the priority.”

“If our plan works out, it should put us in a position in the coming seasons to race more than we have before, plus I’ll have a new, larger space to do it out of.”, Berry said, referring to the shop that will be a part of his newly built home.

June 7th at Port Royal Speedway turned out to be another good example of the way Berry and his team must make decisions.  During his heat race at the Appalachian Mountain Speedweek show, Berry was challenging for second, but his engine temp had risen to undesirable heights, so he was forced to drop out to prevent any significant damage.

Back in the pits, the crew found a broken engine cooling fan.  While Berry could have replaced the fan and raced the B-main that night, he and the team chose to park the car for the night so they could fully evaluate it at the shop to ensure there had been no damage to the Tuscarora Restoration, Juniata Veterinary Clinic, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Dye It Rite, SRI Performance, VP Racing Fuels No.86.

“We have to be smart and not take unnecessary risks with our equipment right now.  A major failure right now could sideline us for a long time.”, Berry said.  

PRODUCTIVE SHOP TIME

Even though the race schedule has been light so far this season, it doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of work going on.  Berry and his team have been busy in the shop evaluating their setups and looking for ways to improve the handling of their Rocket XR1 Chassis.

“We seem to find ourselves fighting a tight racecar a lot.  That means when I want it to turn and rotate, it wants to push the front end up the track instead.”, Berry explained.

“It’s something we have battled.  Sometimes we kinda solve it, but overall it doesn’t give the car the feel I want, so we have been working hard to find a setup package that gives me the balance I want and eliminates the push.”

After a lot of shop hours to make significant changes to their racecar, Berry was anxious to hit the track and find out if their hard work had them headed in the right direction.  The weather made it a bit of a gamble, but it looked promising enough to load up and hit the road June 28th to race the Spence Memorial at Winchester Speedway in Virginia.  

LET’S SEE WHAT WE’VE GOT

After a sunny afternoon, rain hit the track minutes before hot laps and delaying the start of the program.  When racing finally did get started, the track went from greasy to fast to rough as hot laps, qualifying, and heats took place, with weather still making itself known from time to time.

When he did hit the track, Berry timed 3rd quickest in his group and scored a runner-up finish in his heat race.

“It was a tricky surface for sure.  There was so much grip, I had a hard time keeping my left side tires on the ground.”, Berry commented.

“My car was really good.  It had more than I could use under the conditions.  I kinda had to be carefully aggressive and just take what I could get without risking my equipment.”

Ultimately, the promoter, in the interest of driver safety, pulled the plug on the show before the heats were completed.

THE NEXT TEST

Berry’s assessment of the changes to his car on the abbreviated night in Virginia was that they had something good going.  

“The conditions were unusual, but I could still tell the car was much better.  I wasn’t shoving the nose at all.”, an optimistic Berry explained.

With that in mind and anxious to get more laps, Berry planned two races around the Independence Day holiday.  The first was the Firecracker 76 at Bedford Speedway in Pennsylvania on July 3rd.

Berry started second in his heat race and held a firm grip on the spot throughout.  In the main event, he started 8th and made his way forward to challenge for 4th at one point.

He ultimately ended up 6th after dealing with some lapped traffic and doing battle with a familiar foe or two.  All in all, it was a solid night.

“We were pretty good.  It’s tough to pass here, so track position is key.  I’m happy with where we are.  We’ve made good progress on our setup, plus I got to race with my good buddy Tyler Ritchey for a while.”, Berry commented.  

BACK ON FAMILIAR TURF

Berry’s second event of the holiday weekend was just ten miles from his shop on July 5th at Port Royal Speedway.  ‘The Speed Palace’, as it’s known, is where Berry has the most laps in a super late model, so this would be a good opportunity to evaluate the recent setup changes.

The answer came quickly.  In Berry’s heat race, he raced to a runner-up finish from his 3rd starting spot.

“I had a great car in the heat race.  Best car I’ve had here in a while.  I’m excited because this new package we implemented has us competitive again.”, Berry said.

“I probably had a good enough car to win the heat race, but the line Andrew (Yoder) was running took away my best option, so I didn’t take any risks.”

The qualifying run provided Berry with the 4th starting spot and a lot of confidence for the 25-lap A-main.

Unfortunately, things went sour early.  Berry caught a rut in turn two of the opening lap, which not only cost him a couple of positions, it initiated the demise of his right rear tire.

“I could smell rubber right away, so I knew it was going flat from the get-go.”, a disappointed Berry explained.

With the tire going down, Berry lost another couple of positions, and then on lap five, the tire let go, shredding it and sending him to the work area for a replacement.

“Man, I don’t need good luck…I’d just like the bad breaks to stay away for a while so we can show what we’ve got.  I want my guys to get some payoff for all their hard work.”, Berry added.

Officially, Berry finished 17th, but at least he came away knowing they are making the right changes and they have speed again.

“I believe we were a top-five car tonight without the tire issue.  The bad breaks are hard to swallow, but I’m going to focus on the fact that we have speed and a good handling racecar again.  If we keep digging, we’ll get the finishes we are capable of.”, a very patient and confident Berry stated.

UP NEXT

Berry hasn’t set his upcoming schedule in stone just yet.  His day job and new home construction are both demanding a lot of attention at the moment.

“The Spence Memorial makeup at Winchester Speedway this coming weekend is on my radar but I can’t commit to it just yet.  I’ll need to see how things go this week.”, Berry shared.

“Patience is definitely key for me this year on and off the track.  I just have to manage everything and keep it all moving forward.  I appreciate the fans being patient with us this year too.  We’ll get the word out as soon as we’re able to make decisions about our schedule.  Keep an eye on our social media for the latest.”

Austin Berry Focuses on Continuous Improvement Ahead of Speedweek

Austin Berry kicked off his super late model season in mid-April, a little later than usual for the Mifflin, PA native in his 11th super late model season.  As he pulled into Port Royal Speedway in mid-May, he only had three races under his belt.  

Berry was still in early season learning mode, working to determine what his Rocket Chassis No.86 wanted to achieve the speed and consistency he was looking for.  The quality fields that are the norm at Port Royal make for an unforgiving place for learning.  You have to be on your game from start to finish.

QUICK RESULTS:

  • Date/Location:  May 17, 2025 / Port Royal Speedway, Port Royal, PA
  • DivisionSuper Late Model
  • Stats: Heat 6th (3), A-main 15th (17)

 Saturday night, was only Berry’s second visit of the season to Juniata County, Pennsylvania oval.  The night began with a little luck.  Berry was running 5th in his heat race when he cut a tire. Nevertheless, as a result of the misfortune of other drivers, he transferred to the A-main by virtue of officially finishing 6th. 

Despite starting 17th in the feature, Berry used a solid half-dozen opening laps o quickly move up to the 12th position.  However, the middle portion of the race proved more challenging and he slipped back a few spots in his Tuscarora Restoration, Juniata Veterinary Clinic, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Dye It Rite, SRI Performance, VP Racing Fuels No.86.

By the race’s end, Berry managed to regain momentum, finishing 15th. He noted that his lap times in the final stage were within two-tenths of a second of his quickest lap early in the race.

Reflecting on the race, Berry shared, “Overall, Saturday night was somewhat positive. We worked through some tightness in the car early on and discovered a few adjustments that could be beneficial moving forward. My conversations with Paul and the guys down at Rocket Chassis have equipped us with valuable insights; now, it’s a matter of applying them at the right times.”

“The way the car fired off the first few laps in the feature, I felt great.  I thought we were going to drive right up into the top ten.  I’m really not sure what happened in the middle of the race to be honest.  Might have been the car transitioning or maybe it was on me.”

UP NEXT

Looking ahead, Berry and his team have decided to take a weekend off from racing. This pause will allow them to regroup and focus on preparations for the upcoming Speedweek, where they plan to participate in the initial races at Clinton County and Port Royal. 

The team will look to cash in on past successes at those tracks.  Berry recorded a podium finish at Clinton County in the 2023 Speedweek opener and he has numerous top ten finishes, including one victory, at Port Royal Speedway.

“I need to get a lot done at the house my wife and I are building, plus we want to be well-prepared for the opening races of Speedweek, so there will be plenty to do this weekend.”, Berry shared.

“Those first two races of Speedweek are a good opportunity for us to find our groove and get a couple good runs under our belt.  We’re looking forward to those.”

Berry Returns to Super Late Model Action With Two-Race Weekend

Everything came together just in time last week for Austin Berry to roll his Tuscarora Restoration, Juniata Veterinary Clinic, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Dye It Rite, SRI Performance, VP Racing Fuels No.86 out of the shop and head to Selinsgrove Speedway for his first laps in a super late model since June of 2024.

His limited late model ride would be waiting there for him as well, making for a double-duty night.

SNYDER COUNTY DOUBLE

Berry didn’t seem to lose a step in his super late model despite the long layoff.  He qualified 5th quickest in his group in qualifying, then moved forward to a 4th-place heat race finish to give himself the 11th starting spot in the main event.  

In the 25-lap finale, Berry struggled a little, sliding backwards to a 17th-place finish.

“We just missed the setup for the feature.  We learned from it and put it in our notebook.  Things change rapidly in this sport, so we will have to play a little catch-up since we’ve been on the sidelines since the middle of last season.”, Berry said.

Berry had a great night going in the Dunn No.34D limited late model, scoring a runner-up finish in his heat race and then charging from his 6th starting spot in the feature to challenge for 3rd late in the race.  Unfortunately, with five laps remaining, his right rear tire gave up and he slipped to an 11th-place finish.

“We picked the wrong right rear, and it basically melted.  I had no grip the last few laps.  We’ll know better next time.”, Berry shared.

PALACE RECAP

Berry woke up Saturday morning with no plans to race that night, but by late morning, all that had changed, and the team decided to prep the car, load up their super late model, and make the short tow to The Speed Palace, Port Royal Speedway.

The stout field of 35 cars was split into two groups for qualifying.  Berry and his entire team were all smiles after qualifying after the Mifflin, PA driver timed 3rd quickest in his flight.

Berry started on the front row of his heat race, but one midrace bobble cost him a couple of spots and relegated him to a 4th-place finish.  In the uneventful main event, he started 14th and finished 16th.

“It never feels good to go backwards, but it was nice to have speed in qualifying again!  The motor ran great all weekend.  We just need to tune on our package for later in the night, and we will be ok.”, Berry commented.

“We have a couple of weeks off with the super, so we will wrench on her and get ready for the next one at Selinsgrove on May 2nd.  Thanks to my great crew for all their hard work all week long, getting both cars ready and all their efforts at the track! Also, a huge thanks to all our partners, without them it wouldn’t be possible!”

UP NEXT

Berry will be back in the Limited Late Model this Saturday, April 26th, at Selinsgrove Speedway.  On May 2nd, he will return to double-duty, racing both his super and limited at Selinsgrove Speedway.

Double-Duty Awaits: Austin Berry Set To Compete in Two Late Model Divisions in 2025

Austin Berry’s 2024 super late model season ended prematurely when his lone powerplant failed.  The issues were extensive and expensive to repair, leaving the Mifflin, Pennsylvania driver’s program sidelined for the remainder of last season.

It was a tough pill to swallow, given that the engine was refreshed prior to the season.  An expensive repair wasn’t in the budget, especially so soon.

What many fans didn’t know was that Berry strapped into a racecar a few more times before 2024 came to a close.  To have a little fun and keep his skills sharp, he accepted an offer to pilot Bobby Dunn’s modified in a handful of races in Pennsylvania and Virginia.  

Despite never wheeling a modified before, Berry scored a podium finish in his first outing and followed it up with some impressive stats.  In 5 races, he accumulated 4 top-tens, 3 top-fives, and 2 podiums. 

LIMITED OPPORTUNITY

The modified venture spurred offseason conversations that led to a 2025 opportunity for Berry. Dunn offered him the seat of his No.34D limited late model for 15-20 races.

Berry accepted.  Two of his primary partners, Tuscarora Restoration and Juniata Veterinary Clinic, will join him aboard the No.34D for 2025.

The Dunn/Berry limited late model team will focus primarily on Selinsgrove Speedway in 2025, but they did kick things off last weekend by entering the Sunday afternoon show at Hagerstown Speedway, then hustling to Bedford Speedway the same night to complete the double.  

Their efforts yielded feature finishes of 8th and 4th, respectively, at the MD and PA speedways.  Solid results for the new pairing.

SUPER RETURN

The good news doesn’t end there for Berry.  He will also return to the seat of the Austin Berry Racing Tuscarora Restoration, Juniata Veterinary Clinic, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, Dye It Rite, SRI Performance / Stock Car Steel & Aluminum, VP Racing Fuels No.86 super late model in 2025.

The team’s Cornett engine has emerged from the shop at Barron’s Racing Engines ready for battle, and the team plans to kick off their season at Selinsgrove Speedway Friday night, April 18th.

Berry plans to compete in 12-15 super late model events at Selinsgrove, Port Royal, Bridgeport, and Clinton County, including some Appalachian Mountain Speedweek and Fall Clash events.  The team is also considering possible trips to Path Valley and Bedford Speedways.

Approximately ten of Berry’s race nights will involve double-duty, wheeling both the No.86 and No.34D on the same night.

FULL PLATE

Not only will Berry be at the wheel of two racecars this season, but he will have a lot going on away from the track, too.  

“My wife and I recently broke ground for our new house.  We’re building on a piece of land we bought a few years ago, and we are managing the project ourselves, so we will be pretty busy with the house this year, not to mention continuing to raise our two young girls, who are getting busier and busier.”, Berry shared.

“With everything going on, our race schedule for both cars may be very fluid.”

Berry’s new house will also include a new race shop, which he hopes to be able to move into during next offseason.

BUSY 2025 AHEAD

Berry will be juggling a lot in 2025, on and off of the racetrack.  

His racing plans are being assembled around a major personal project Berry recently kicked off.  He is building a house and a new race shop on property he purchased a few years ago.  

Berry, with the help of his father and family, is managing the entire project and taking on aspects of it himself.  Add that to a full-time job, two young children, and a race team and you get one very busy young man.

Watch for more information about Berry’s 2025 racing plans, which will look quite different than in recent years, to be released in the next week or two.
