Kyle Reinhardt Scores Top-5 in First Trip to Huset’s Speedway

Eagle, NE – June 13, 2024

Kyle Reinhardt was preparing to race his own No.91 at Lincoln Speedway’s Elijah Hawkins Memorial last weekend but his plans quickly changed when Bernie Stuebgen reached out and asked the Neptune City, NJ native to wheel his Indy Race Parts No.71 at a couple of Midwest shows.

Reinhardt filled the seat of Stuebgen’s car at a High Limit Racing event last year at Grandview Speedway.  He recorded a top-ten finish that night.  Opportunity knocked again last week to wheel the car at Knoxville Raceway Saturday night and again a few days later at the Eagle Raceway (NE) High Limit Racing event.

MIDWEST MISSION

Reinhardt’s first trip to Knoxville Raceway in 2024 Saturday night was also his first time in the seat of the No.71 this year.  With only a few hot laps under his belt, he took to the half-mile for qualifying.  His best lap ranked him 19th in the field of 30.

A 7th-place run in his heat put him 19th on the grid for the A-main.  He netted a 17th-place finish in that 20-lap finale.

“We were behind the 8-ball tonight by about one track session.  We were playing catch-up all night but got better by the end.  I wish we had another go at it.”, Reinhardt said.

Ripped the nose wing off when a few cars stacked up coming to the green in the feature. Bernie had the wrench spinning & made some big changes that got us better.”

A last-minute decision early Sunday made Reinhardt and the Indy Race Parts No.71 a surprise entry at Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, SD that night.  The 3/8-mile banked oval was another first for Reinhardt but it didn’t show.

He posted the 3rd quickest lap in Group A qualifying, then converted a 3rd place start in his heat race to a runner-up finish, putting himself solidly inside the top ten to start the A-main.

From his starting spot inside row four, Reinhardt grabbed the 6th spot on the opening circuit and settled in there until near the midpoint of the 25-lap finale.

The car got even better in the late stages and Reinhardt didn’t waste it.  He cracked the top five on lap fourteen, then claimed the 4th spot on lap twenty-three, which is where he took the checkers.

“We definitely rebounded tonight.  That felt good.”, Reinhardt commented.

“I want to thank Bernie for the opportunity.  He gave me a great car.  I also want to thank Tod Quiring and Huset’s Speedway for having us.  That is a bad-ass track and I’m extremely happy I had the opportunity to race here.”

The third leg of Reinhardt’s Midwest tour took him to Eagle Raceway in Nebraska on Tuesday night.  A stout field of 43 teams was on hand for the $50,000-to-win High Limit Racing event.

Reinhardt clocked in 12th quickest in Group B qualifying.  A 6th place run in his heat race and 5th place finish in the B-main were both one spot short of claiming a spot in the A-main.

Reinhardt will take the upcoming weekend off to conserve his engines for the upcoming Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek.

He will return to action in his Capitol Custom Trailers & Coaches, Coors Banquet Beer/Ace Distributing of PA, E-Z-GO Golf Cars/Golf Cart Services, Henry’s Wrecker Service No.91 on June 22nd at Lincoln Speedway for their PA Speedweek tune-up event.

Berry Determined to Bounce Back After Early Speedweek Struggles

Spring Run, PA – June 12, 2024

Austin Berry entered Appalachian Mountain Speedweek aiming to improve on his 11th-place finish in the 2023 series standings.  He and his team put in a lot of work during the offseason to freshen their equipment and improve their motor program to take the next step in their progression.

Berry got a late start on his 2024 campaign after parts delays kept the team’s engine on the sidelines longer than expected.  As a result, he entered Speedweek with only three races under his belt.  In those three starts, he showed speed but had mixed results.

THE OPENING PAIR

Berry kicked off the series Friday night with a return to the scene of his best run in last year’s edition.  He posted a podium finish in the 2023 event at Clinton County Speedway in Mill Hall, PA, and was looking to get a strong start again this year.

Although he didn’t come out of the gate with a qualifying run that put him in the dash like the previous year, his 12th-quickest lap was good enough to put him in contention.  He started 5th in his heat race but couldn’t climb into a top-three transfer spot.

From inside row two in the B-main, Berry grabbed the runner-up spot at the drop of the green, then took command of the race at the halfway mark of the 10-lap affair.  The win put the Mifflin, PA native 19th on the A-main grid, which he converted into a 15th-place finish.

“We weren’t bad tonight but we were fighting a right front brake issue all night.  The caliper was hanging up and that was definitely limiting my options behind the wheel.”, Berry shared.

Saturday night the series rolled into Port Royal Speedway, Berry’s home track.  With a large, high-quality field of 45 cars on hand, he turned in the 7th-best lap in Group B qualifying, which put him on the front row of his heat race.

Berry transferred through his heat with a 3rd place finish but couldn’t mount any forward charge in the feature, officially finishing 19th in the 35-lap main event.

“We weren’t very good tonight.  We looked better than we were early on.  I think our experience here (at Port Royal) helped us qualify well and get through the heat.”, Berry commented.

NEW HOPE

Night three at Hagerstown Speedway in Maryland on Sunday was a night Berry was just as soon forget.  Rather than serving as a turning point, it only elevated the level of frustration in the ABR camp.

“Not a lot I can say about tonight.  The car was bad and so was the driver.”, Berry said.

After qualifying 14th in his group, finishing 7th in his heat, and not transferring through the B-main, Berry and his team loaded up and headed home right away to get started on going over the car and preparing for Path Valley Speedway Park on Tuesday.  The day off on Monday would give them an opportunity to regroup.

When the team unloaded for Tuesday’s show, quite a few changes had been made to the Tuscarora Restoration, Juniata Veterinary Clinic, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, SRI Performance / Stock Car Steel & Aluminum, VP Racing Fuels, Carquest of State College No.86.

After posting good lap times in hot laps, Berry’s qualifying run came up short of expectations when he landed 12th in the rundown for group A.

“I was really confused when the car got really tight in qualifying because it was good in hot laps and we had not changed anything.  When I got back to our pit we discovered the right rear tire was almost completely flat.  I ran over something in staging and cut the sidewall just before I started my time trial run.”, Berry explained.

From outside row two in his heat, Berry got into the 3rd and final transfer spot at the drop of the green and held it to the halfway point, but late in the race slipped to 4th and was relegated to the B-main.

Berry started on the pole of the 10-lap B-main and never looked back, winning over Drake Troutman and Kyle Hardy to put his Rocket Chassis in the show.

After starting 19th in the 35-lap feature, Berry slipped back as far as 21st before rebounding and charging forward to 14th on lap nine.  The second half of the race was more of a struggle when the right front brake issue surfaced again.  He finished 17th.

“After Hagerstown, we went over everything, talked with the folks at Rocket Chassis and with Jim at JDS Racing.  We determined some of the changes we made over the offseason were working against us, so we put some of those things back to how they were last year.”, Berry shared.

“It helped.  We were a lot better at Path Valley.  Only racing three times before Speedweek has hurt us.  If we had raced more we would have figured these things out sooner.”

“We have made tremendous gains in the handful of races we have run.  We expected to be better, but the good news is we know what our issues have been and we can work on them to get to where we should be.”

Berry has the equipment to do the job.  Facing tough fields with limited laps this year is part of the reality of the challenge they face, but they are battling through that.

“I want to give a shout-out to Tom Barron and Barron’s Racing Engines.  It’s no secret that our powerplants have been a pain point for us in recent years, sidelining us with a series of issues, so after last season we started working with Tom.  He has got our engine program on the right track.  We appreciate that, especially after what we have gone through the past few years.”, Berry said.

“We are hitting the reset as we head to Selinsgrove to start the second half of Speedweek.  It’s one of my better tracks, so it will be a good gauge of where we are.  We are looking to get some confidence back.”

UP NEXT

Four races remain on the Appalachian Mountain Speedweek schedule and Berry intends to enter all of them.  Thursday night the series will roll into Selinsgrove Speedway, then move on to Bedford Speedway, Lincoln Speedway and BAPS Motor Speedway on the next three nights, closing out the series on Sunday night June 16th.

Trever Feathers Rallies for Podium Finish in Backup Car at Hagerstown

Hagerstown, MD – June 11, 2024

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Photo Credit:  Jason Walls / WRT Speedwerx

One week ago, Trever Feathers noted that despite some quality runs in his black and blue No.20 Team Zero Chassis, he wasn’t satisfied.  The consistency he had in late 2023 with the same car was missing and he was struggling to dial it in on certain types of surfaces.

It can be a slow and frustrating process for teams to work through the trial and error required to find the root of a handling problem.  Sometimes the schedule allows for that but sometimes it doesn’t, and sometimes it’s an expensive journey until you get to the solution.

The ace up his sleeve was a second Team Zero car, a 2016 chassis the team acquired with the intent to go Limited Late Model racing.  Feathers did that early in the season with the No.27 on the door and he won at Hagerstown Speedway in dominant fashion.

In recent weeks, Feathers opted to bolt a super late model engine into the No.27 and keep it handy as a backup car as he entered Appalachian Mountain Speed Week.

  • Quick Stats:  36 cars, Group 1 Qualifying 12th, Heat 3rd (8), A-main 3rd (15)

NOT GREAT, NOT BAD

Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway, Feathers strapped into his McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, George’s Used Cars, Martin’s Pumping, North River Farm, Feathers & Son’s Roofing, Leggett Engine Research, Coffelt Graphics, Shane McDowell Racing, Fox Racing Shox No.20 super late model and turned in a respectable 11th quickest lap in group one qualifying.

With 45 cars on hand, the qualifying lap put Feathers in a decent position for the night.  From the 4th starting spot in his heat race, he muscled his way to a 3rd place finish to qualify for the finale.

Feathers started deep in the field, 17th to be exact, but churned his way forward to a 12th-place finish.  It was enough to earn Hard Charger.

It wasn’t a bad night but it was short of expectations for the Winchester, VA native when it comes to Port Royal Speedway where he has had considerable success.  There was frustration in the TFR pit.  At that point, the mindset was they would skip Hagerstown and instead get to work in the shop to figure out the issue.

YEAH, THAT'S BETTER

Sunday morning in the shop the team got to work and felt they had identified the source of some of the issues, so Feathers and the team loaded up and headed to Hagerstown, MD for the next stop on the speed week schedule.

Unfortunately, in hot laps Feathers experienced the same issue he has been having for a while.  The feel he was seeking still wasn’t there.

The field of 36 cars was split into two groups for qualifying.  Feathers turned the first of his two laps but the issues were significant enough that he opted to pull in before completing the second lap.  He was scored 12th quickest in group one.

Tense team discussions led to the decision to turn the page.  The team pulled down the No.27 backup car.  They would get back to solving the No.20’s issue on another night when the stakes were not as high.  Shocks and springs were moved from the No.20 to the No.27 to get ready for the heat race.

The swap to the backup car meant Feathers relinquished his 5th starting spot in his heat and he would have to go from the rear (8th).  With only the top three transferring to the main event, his work was cut out for him.

One lap into the heat race, everyone with eyes on the track knew Feathers had made the right choice.  He blasted from 8th to 3rd on the opening lap and never looked back, holding on to the spot to put himself and his team in the show.

Feathers lined up 15th for the 35-lap feature and used the opening laps to let the field sort itself out while he settled into a rhythm.  By lap seven he cracked the top ten.

The charge accelerated from there.  Feathers climbed into the top five on lap ten.  Over the last 25 laps, he battled with the front runners, climbing as high as 3rd and within striking distance of the lead.  Depending how it all unfolded, he had a shot to get to the front.

Ultimately, Feathers finished 3rd, completing an unexpected turnaround from his early challenges.

“Well obviously I’m happy with the result we were able to get tonight after making the swap, but to be honest while I was passing cars I was thinking about what’s wrong with our blue car (the No.20).  That car won three of the last six races it ran in 2023.  I kept telling people I didn’t forget how to drive.”, Feathers said with a grin.

“We built the 27-car using the 20-car as a template, so both Team Zero chassis cars are exactly the same but the 27 just has a much better feel right now.”

“We’ve managed some good results but I honestly haven’t been happy with the 20-car all year.  It’s all about the feel.  It’s a mystery we’re going to solve.  We’re not giving up on it.  We love these Team Zero cars and we are getting better with them.”

UP NEXT

Feathers will tackle two more Appalachian Mountain Speedweek events for super late models this weekend.

The team will travel to Lincoln Speedway in Abbotstown, PA, and BAPS Motor Speedway in York Haven, PA for the final two events of the series.

Carlisle’s Keen Gaining Ground in 410 Sprint Car Competition

Port Royal, PA – June 5, 2024

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

When the 2024 race season opened in PA Posse territory, Central Pennsylvania. Kyle Keen had plans to divide his time between his 358 and 410 sprint cars.

After an early great run in his 358, leading laps at BAPS Motor Speedway, motor issues forced Keen to jump in the 410 for a few weeks.  That period of time altered his plans for the season.  He has now committed to the 410 program and finds himself two months into that venture, taking his lumps and learning along the way.

Gaining experience in a 410 sprint car in Pennsylvania is like learning to play baseball at the major league level but the Carlisle, PA native has held his own thus far.  The first couple outings were rough but when last weekend came to a close, Keen had qualified for six of the last eight events he entered.

QUICK RESULTS

  • Division:  410 Sprint Cars

  • City, State:   Port Royal, PA
  • Stats:  29 cars, Heat 8th (6), B-main 6th (6), A-main 19th (24)

SMALL WINS, BIG STEPS

Keen’s weekend kicked off Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway where he turned in a qualifying lap that put him 18th of the 25 cars on hand.  A closer look was even more telling.  His lap was only 0.216 seconds slower than the 10th place car, a sign of not only how competitive the fields are in Central PA but also a sign of the progress the team is making with the Fine Line Auto Body, Hess Bid / Hess Auctioneers, Keen Parts / CorvetteParts.net, Shetron Trailers, Heishman Racing Fuels, DL Lehman Construction No.17k.

Keen went on to record a 7th place heat race finish and a 20th place feature finish.

Dialing in a car under race conditions where longer races, more traffic and dirty air are the primary challenges, is always the most challenging area for a young team to develop.  Keen is less than a dozen races into his 410 sprint car career, so it’s still very early for him and his team on that front.

Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway, Keen’s pill draw put him in the back of his heat race lineup.  He and the team struggled to overcome that and ended up running the B-main.

Keen was able to hold his own in the B-main and make the finale with a 6th place finish.  He then went on to convert that 24th starting spot into a 19th place finish.

“We had better weekend and made some progress.  We are starting to get a grasp on this 410 stuff.  Saturday night we really hit on something that made me much for comfortable in the B-main and used it for the feature, now just have to build off of that. “, Keen said.

Thanks to everyone who supports us! We will be back next weekend!

UP NEXT

Keen will return to both Williams Grove Speedway and Port Royal Speedway this weekend to continue building up his team’s notebook and his experience.

The team’s current plans are to race each opportunity at those two well-known facilities each weekend throughout the month of June.

Keen is racing more than ever to build his notebook and accumulate experience.  It will be a journey worth watching to see what level the Carlisle, PA native reaches by the end of his first season in a 410 sprint car.

Newlin Battles Back at Williams Grove After Early Contact

Mechanicsburg, PA – June 4, 2024

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Photo Credit:  Jeremy Zarfos / WRT Speedwerx

Zach Newlin kicked off his season at Williams Grove Speedway back in March with a runner-up finish but since then it has been an uphill battle to get back into the top five.

April’s events were rained out and earlier in May he struggled to two finishes outside the top fifteen.

As the month of May came to a close Friday night, Newlin was back at ‘The Grove’ in the Mansberger Motorsports No.21m aiming to get back to where the team started.

QUICK RESULTS

DATE:  May 31, 2024

  • Class:  358 Sprint Cars
  • Track:  Williams Grove Speedway
  • City, State:   Mechanicsburg, PA
  • Quick Stats:  29 cars, Heat 9th (7), A-main 12th (20)

COSTLY CONTACT

Newlin appeared to be on his way to achieving his goal at the start of the night.

The Millerstown, PA native started 7th in his heat, was up to 5th, and challenging for 4th with one lap to go when contact initiated by another car caused him to spin off turn two.  Although he was able to restart, the one remaining lap was not enough to climb back into a transfer spot.  He finished 9th.

In the B-main, Zach wasted no time ensuring he would put the Mansberger 21m in the show.  On the opening lap he charged from 5th to 2nd, then pursued Williams Grove 358 sprint point leader Doug Hammaker for the lead.  Newlin settled for the runner-up finish and a spot in the finale.

Starting deep in the 25-lap feature field, Newlin started moving forward from the drop of the green.  From the 20th starting spot, he climbed inside the top fifteen by lap seven.  His progress continued and culminated with a 12th-place finish.

“Moving forward a few spots in the heat and eight spots in the feature shows we made progress tonight, so we will build on that.”, Newlin commented.

UP NEXT

The next outing for Newlin in the Mansberger Motorsports No.21m will likely be June 21st at Williams Grove Speedway.

Stay tuned to Zach’s social media outlets listed below to be the first to know when schedule updates are posted!

Berry Strives for Rhythm as Appalachian Mountain Speedweek Nears

Port Royal, PA – June 4, 2024

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Photo Credit:  Christopher Hockley / WRT Speedwerx

The calendar turned to June on Saturday yet for Austin Berry it still felt like the beginning of the 2024 season.  His season started late due to parts delays and there was a mix of good and bad news on his first two race nights.

Appalachian Mountain Speedweek was fast approaching and Berry needed to find a rhythm and find it quick.

QUICK RESULTS

DATE:  June 1, 2024

  • Division:  Super Late Models
  • Track:  Port Royal Speedway
  • City, State:   Port Royal, PA
  • Stats:  34 cars, Heat 2nd (2), A-main 14th (12)

A COMPLETE NIGHT

Berry’s pill draw Saturday night put him on the outside front row for his heat race and he took full advantage early on, jumping out to a five-car-length lead by the end of lap one.

Berry endured three restarts before two laps could be completed.  Each caution erased a comfortable lead and bunched the field.  Meanwhile 8th-starting Rick Eckert had a good car as well and was cashing in on the restarts.  He took the lead away before the halfway point and Berry settled for a runner-up finish.

The 25-lap main event saw Berry take the green from outside row six.  He found himself in a heated battle with Gregg Satterlee, Shaun Jones, and others for the majority of the event.

Berry ran 11th in the middle segment of the finale but could not quite crack the top ten.  He eventually closed out the night in 14th.

“I’m happy to get a full night in.  Our season started late, we had troubles the first night out, then we started good at Bridgeport but couldn’t close out the night.”, Berry commented.  “I’m glad we got this run under our belt before we take on Speedweek.”

“It’s not easy here.  The competition is deep.  You have to really be on to move forward here.  No excuses.  We weren’t good enough tonight but our car was good.  It was all about track position and dirty air.  I feel like we were good enough to run near the front if we had started up there.”

UP NEXT

Berry will tackle the entire 8-race slate of Appalachian Mountain Speedweek for super late models beginning this Friday night, June 7th.  The full schedule can be found at AustinBerryRacing.com!

Feathers Strong but Not Satisfied, Striving for More

Port Royal, PA – June 3, 2024

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Trever Feathers will tell you he doesn’t feel he has been as good as his stats make it appear.

At the end of the weekend, he had three top-five and five top-ten finishes in six super late model races this season, but the highly-driven Feathers says he and the team are not as fast as they were at the end of 2023 when he clicked off 3 wins in his last ten races of the year.

Feathers has been spending many hours in the shop and venturing to racetracks that have been traditionally challenging for him as part of an effort to find the combination he needs to get back to victory lane.

QUICK RESULTS

DATE:  May 31, 2024

  • Class:  Super Late Model
  • Track:  Port Royal Speedway
  • City, State:   Port Royal, PA
  • Quick Stats:  34 cars, Heat 4th (8), A-main 7th (16)

PASSING CLINIC

Feathers rolled into Georgetown Speedway on Friday night.  The Delaware oval is one of those places that has been a struggle for the Winchester, VA driver.  Friday’s show didn’t reveal the answers Feathers was looking for and he departed frustrated again after a DNF.

“We had a transmission issue but we just weren’t good there again.  We will figure it out.”, a determined Feathers said.

Saturday night Feathers brought the McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, George’s Used Cars, Martin’s Pumping, North River Farm, Feathers & Son’s Roofing, Leggett Engine Research, Coffelt Graphics, Shane McDowell Racing, Fox Racing Shox No.20 super late model back to Port Royal Speedway and he showed speed right out of the gate.

In a nonstop heat race, Feathers drove from 8th to 4th to get in the show but he was one spot short of making the handicap for the feature lineup.

From his 16th starting spot in the 25-lap main event, Feathers steadily worked his way through the field, cracking the top ten at the halfway mark.  He moved into 7th on lap twenty but couldn’t wrestle 6th away from Kyle Lee in the closing laps.  A mere tenth of a second separated the two at the finish.

On the night Feathers passed thirteen cars and zero cars passed him.  He appeared capable of more than a 7th place finish but the format and the breaks don’t always go your way.  Sometimes you need a little luck too.

“That’s the first night in quite a while I didn’t get passed by anyone.  That’s a sign we are making progress.”, Feathers said.

“I think we passed more cars tonight than anyone except Rick (Eckert), so I’m happy about that.  I started in the back of the heat race and went forward but we probably needed a caution to fall our way to give me a chance to get one more spot to get in the handicap.  That would have put us at least two rows closer to the front for the feature, then we would have had a better shot at a podium.”

UP NEXT

Feathers will tackle four of the eight Appalachian Mountain Speedweek events for super late models over the next two weekends.  Saturday, June 8th he will return to Port Royal Speedway (PA), then move south to Hagerstown Speedway (MD) for Sunday night’s show.

The following weekend Feathers plans to head to Lincoln Speedway in Abbotstown, PA, and BAPS Motor Speedway in York Haven, PA for the final two events of the series.

Reinhardt’s Memorial Day Weekend Brings Another Top-10 at Williams Grove, Mixed Results with High Limit Racing

Bechtelsville, PA – May 31, 2024

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

The season has been a bit of a roller-coaster thus far for Kyle Reinhardt.  He and his Capitol Renegade team have been working hard to get back to the consistent results they achieved in 2023.

The Memorial Day weekend provided multiple opportunities for the team to find their groove.

ANOTHER TOP TEN

The John Trone Tribute race at Williams Grove Speedway was the weekend kickoff for Reinhardt in the Capitol Custom Coaches & Trailers, Capitol Renegade, Coors Banquet Beer, E-Z-GO Golf Cars, Henry’s Wrecker Service No.91.

Reinhardt’s qualifying lap scored him 6th in the Group B qualifying results and put him on the outside of the front row for his heat race.  He brought home a runner-up finish behind Danny Dietrich in that 8-lap qualifying race.

In the night’s 25-lap finale, Reinhardt took the green from outside row six.  He jumped into the top ten on the opening circuit, then continued to push forward.

At the checkers, Reinhardt crossed the line 8th, logging his second consecutive top-ten finish at the legendary oval.

MIXED BAG

Saturday night Port Royal Speedway, and every other track in the region, succumbed to the rain.  The weather condensed the High Limit Series’ sanctioned Bob Weikert Memorial to a one-night event boasting $75,000 to the winner.

Sunday brought beautiful weather for the finale at ‘The Speed Palace’.  Reinhardt timed 35th in the field of 53, then turned in a 3rd-place run in his heat.  His points total after qualifying landed him in the B-main, where he finished 13th.

Aiming to regroup on Tuesday night with 42 teams on hand at Grandview Speedway’s High Limit Racing event, Reinhardt registered a solid time trial lap that ranked him 8th quickest in Group B.

A 5th place finish in his heat race put Reinhardt 20th on the grid for the A-main, which he converted into a 17th place finish.

“Port has been a struggle for me for the last few years but I am making progress on my car everywhere else and definitely getting a more consistent feel.”, Reinhardt commented on his up-and-down weekend.

UP NEXT

Reinhardt will take the upcoming weekend off.  He will return to action June 8th at Lincoln Speedway for the Elijah Hawkins Memorial.

Berry Sets Quick Time, Dominates Heat Race at Bridgeport Before Setback

Swedesboro, NJ – May 31, 2024

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Original Photo Credit:  Bridgeport Motorsports Park

Austin Berry has waited, patiently, for the most part, to hit the track in 2024.  Delays in receiving motor parts and weather have left him unable to satisfy his appetite for speed.

His season debut at Port Royal Speedway a couple of weeks ago didn’t go well.  A series of nuisance issues kept him from being a factor that night.

Knowing he won’t be racing for points at his home track after missing several events, Berry has stepped back and looked at his schedule options.  He is trying to take lemons and make lemonade by rethinking his schedule and giving himself and his team a chance to grow and improve.

How does a racer accomplish that?  They get out of their comfort zone.  They race new tracks and challenge themselves.  Berry will still see plenty of laps at Port Royal Speedway this year but Sunday he took the first step in deploying a new approach by making the three-hour tow to Bridgeport Motorsports Park for their invitational super late model race.

QUICK RESULTS

DATE:  May 26, 2024

  • Division:  Super Late Models
  • Track:  Bridgeport Motorsports Park
  • City, State:   Swedesboro, NJ
  • Stats:  19 cars, Qualifying 1st, Heat 1st (1), A-main DNF/18th (6)

ON THE CUSP

Berry was one of nineteen drivers to accept the invite to compete Sunday evening at the high-banked 4-tenths mile oval not far across the river from Philadelphia International Airport.

He wasted no time making sure fans took notice.  With names like Covert, Eckert, Frye, Bernheisel, and Yoder in the field, Berry topped them all in qualifying with a blistering lap of 15.460 seconds, nearly two-tenths better than his closest competitor.

It was an impressive effort, especially when you consider Berry has never seen the facility before.  He spent weeks doing homework though.  He watched videos and looked for information about tire wear, doing his best to prepare his equipment and team for the venture.  He clearly passed the initial test.

Berry earned the pole for his 8-lap heat race.  There was never a question.  He drove away from the field and took the checkered flag 1.4 seconds ahead of second place.

The six-car redraw dealt Berry his first minor setback.  He pulled number six.

Berry took the green from outside row three, feeling confident he had plenty to get him to the front over the course of the 40 scheduled laps.  Unfortunately very early on he had lost power steering, which was compounded by a water pump issue that led to overheating, forcing him to the sidelines just a few laps into the main event.  Officially he was recorded as finishing 18th.

“First off, I want to give a huge shout-out to Chris Spotts Welding & Repair for the $300 Quick Time Award.  That’s money that makes a difference, especially for a team like ours.  Just getting here with gas, tolls, tires, and race fuel is expensive, so we needed to make some money.  We really appreciate what Chris did.”, Berry said.

“We didn’t get the finish we deserved but honestly we are all leaving here smiling.  We were fast even though we had never seen this joint before.  That gives us a lot of confidence in what we are doing.  That’s big.  We will carry this into Port Royal next weekend.”

UP NEXT

Berry will return to Port Royal Speedway this Saturday night, June 1st, aiming to erase the disappointment of his debut there a few weeks ago.

Kody Hartlaub to Drive Trone Outdoors’ No. 39 Sprint Car

Port Royal, PA – May 29, 2024

Kody Hartlaub has shown a ton of potential in his young 410 sprint car career.

He has some impressive stats but so far this year the combination of inexperience and being in the wrong place at the wrong time on a few occasions have prevented him from truly cashing in on the speed his Ninety Five Motorsports team has had.

Last week Hartlaub was collected in a hard crash at the start of his heat race that left him banged up physically and in terms of equipment.

Just when it looked like Hartlaub would be sidelined for a couple of weeks, the storyline changed.  Five days after the crash, he’s still sore but improving.

Then came the text from Steve Siegel that brought the East Berlin, PA driver to a meeting with John Trone and Kevin Frey on Tuesday night.

HISTORY OF THE 39

Just one week ago, Williams Grove Speedway presented the John Trone Tribute race.  That might be all you need to know about the impact of the longtime car owner on Central Pennsylvania sprint car racing.

Trone has owned and entered the No.39 in events since 2007, with well-known drivers such as Greg Hodnett, Keith Kauffman, and Doug Esh among others piloting his car to successful seasons.  Over the years, his team has won championships and big races and raced up front with the best of the best at Knoxville.

The roots of it all run back to John’s father, Ray, who first fielded the No.39 in 1955.  For 17 years he had success with names like Dubendorf, Zirkle, Spriggle, Hersh, and Leppo behind the wheel. When Ray retired from the sport in 1972, the dust settled until John resurrected the family’s ties to the sport by sponsoring TJ Stutts.  That evolved into ownership and the rest is history as they say.

THE PLAN

The outcome of Tuesday night’s meeting is that Hartlaub will pilot the Trone No.39 for a few weeks initially.  After that, a decision will be made about continuing the partnership for more races together.

Communication will be a big key during the trial.  Siegel is close friends with Frye and Hartlaub, mentoring the latter in recent years, so his involvement and input will be valuable.

“I’m excited to even have the opportunity to drive such an iconic car in the Central PA area. I’ve always said that history and experience is one thing that can not be replaced and that is one thing the 39 car has plenty of. If everything goes the best it can over then next few weeks I think that is a win in everyone’s book.”, Hartlaub said.

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER

Trone’s team certainly has the resources to be successful.  In recent years a handful of drivers have filled the seat of his car but success has been limited.  In racing, things ‘need to click’ as they say.  Sometimes they just don’t.

When the right people, resources, and partners do click, great things can happen.

Kody’s partners will join him in the Trone camp.  Brewer Home Improvements, J Fuels, MooseBlocks.com, Bigham Appraisal, Griffith Plumbing Services, T and N Solutions, and other long-time supporters of Hartlaub will appear on the car.

“I cannot thank my sponsors enough for allowing me to do this and John for doing whatever it takes to accommodate them.”, an appreciative Hartlaub added.

Hartlaub built his 358 program the right way but did so in a short span of time over the last few years.  He and partner Pat Brewer launched a 410 sprint car team last season for a few races as well.

Hartlaub’s success drew the attention of Bill Rose, who put Hartlaub in his seat for a few World of Outlaw races late last year.

Hartlaub entered this season as a full-time 410 driver in his own car with a goal of building it to a championship-caliber team just like he did with his 358 program.  That said, he knows the realities of what it will take to be good enough to be competitive week in and week out in Pennsylvania.  It will take time and experience.

This new pairing with Trone brings together a lot of knowledge, experience, resources, and ability.  That equals a lot of potential for all involved.

UP NEXT

The new Trone / Hartlaub combination will debut this Friday night,  May 31st, at Williams Grove Speedway at the legendary oval’s $8,000-to-win Diamond Series event.
