Reinhardt Wraps Up Early Season in PA with Another Top 10

Capitol Renegade Team Primed for Friday All Star Opener

Kyle Reinhardt wrapped up his ‘preseason’ outings with a top-10 run at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night in the Weldon Sterner Memorial aboard his familiar Capitol Renegade / Capitol Custom Coaches & Trailers / Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants / J&J Auto Racing No.91.

 

It’s not really fair to refer to a string of tough races in Central PA as ‘preseason’.  Given the level of competition present, every race is a dogfight.  It was preseason in a sense though for Reinhardt, as he and his team have been working for the past few weeks to sharpen themselves and their equipment for their regular season with the Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions, which kicks off Friday, April 15th at Attica Raceway Park in Ohio.

 

April 9:  Weldon Sterner Memorial / Lincoln Speedway / Abbottstown, PA

      (43 cars, qualifying 2nd, heat 3rd, A-main 10th)

 

The lucrative Weldon Sterner Memorial event at Lincoln Speedway drew a quality field of 43 cars to compete for the $6,900 winner’s take.  Kyle Reinhardt was slotted 17th overall, part of group 1, for time trials.  He ripped off a lap of 13.851 to take the top spot on the chart.  Five cars later, Danny Dietrich knocked him from his perch, taking quick time by a mere 0.084 seconds.

 

The PA Speedweek format was in place for the night’s action, so four 10-lap heats were lined up with the four best times in each inverted for the start.  The top five from each race would transfer to the A-main, with two cars from each heat going to the redraw:  the winner and the fastest timer who transferred.

 

Reinhardt was able to advance from his number four starting spot to a 3rd place finish, thus transferring and putting himself in the redraw.  The results of the redraw made Reinhardt’s night a little tougher when he pulled the 8th starting spot.  

 

In the 35-lap feature event, Reinhardt moved into 7th at the drop of the green, but he slid backwards to 9th by the time the race had reached the halfway point.  He held his ground there until the final lap when Matt Campbell slipped by, relegating the Neptune City, NJ native to a 10th place finish.

 

Time trials were something we definitely wanted to improve on from last year, so I feel like we’ve done that so far.  We’ve been timing really well and have had good speed early in the night.  Now we need to work on making the right decisions later in the night, so we can finish as well as we start“, Reinhardt explained.

 

Lincoln Speedway has been a challenging venue for Reinhardt in the past, so while the finish may have been a few spots shy of the goal Saturday night, it was a solid step forward for him and his team.  It also establishes a trend in the right direction when coupled with his 6th place finish there last August in the Kramer Klash with the All Stars.

 

Up Next

 

Reinhardt finally gets to hit the road this week.  The team will travel to Attica Raceway Park in Ohio to begin their Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions campaign.  The season launches there with shows on both Friday and Saturday, April 15th-16th.

 

We struggled at Attica last year but I’m looking forward to kicking off our All Star season there.  I’d like to get a top-10 there.  We’re capable of it.  We just need to get a good lap down to start the night and we’ll be ok.  It’s a different type of track than we have been running so far this year, but a lot of the things we’ve improved will translate“, Reinhardt explained.

 

Following the 2-day All Star opener, Reinhardt will have the opportunity to return to his home state of NJ to compete in the special ‘Invasion of the Posse’ 410 sprint car show at Bridgeport Motorsports Park on Tuesday, April 19th.

Berry Digs Out of Early Hole to Make Lucas Oil Event

Positives Emerge from Challenging Day

If you’re competing against the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, you can’t have anything go wrong.  You can’t make a mistake.  The field is too deep to back your way into the finale.

 

Five minutes into Austin Berry’s day at Port Royal Speedway, a part of him had to be thinking “let’s just load up, we’re done”.  Why?  As he took to the track for his hot lap session, something went wrong mechanically.  It wasn’t clear exactly what at first, but back in the pits the diagnosis was a blown power steering line.

 

With only minutes to get in line for their spot in time trials, the Austin Berry Racing team went into high gear.  What likely appeared to some to be chaos was actually an organized, high speed repair involving at least a half-dozen crew members.  They did miss their spot in line, but they made it in time to join the end of the line and get the opportunity to run one lap under the clock.  The lap, 15th quickest in group two, wasn’t up to their standards but at least they still had a chance to get in the show, even if it was slim.

 

April 10:  River Valley 40 / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

       (37 cars, Qualifying 15th, Heat 7th, B-main 4th, A-main 20th)

 

Earlier that day the Central Pennsylvania high-banked half-mile track had rain, sleet and snow flurries blowing across its surface.  Against the odds, the afternoon brought 37 super late models, some moments of sunshine, and racing.

 

Following Berry’s scramble to get a qualifying lap in the books, he regrouped and rolled out 8th for the fourth and final 8-lap heat race.  The top four finishers would transfer directly to the A-main, while the remainder of the field would race for one of three final transfer spots in a B-main.  Berry managed to advance as far as 6th briefly but after a torrid battle with Garrett Alberson and Dylan Yoder, Berry settled for a 7th place finish.

 

It’s too bad we were buried deep in the starting lineup for that race because of our earlier issue.  That was one of the best handling cars I’ve ever had here“, Berry said as he climbed out of The Tire Mart / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Kevin Nouse Designs – K1 Race Gear / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / DirtCarLifts / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86.

 

Austin Berry was three spots away from a major recovery for his day.  If he could move from his 6th starting spot in the 10-lap B-main into the top three, he could still put his team in the show after an unfortunate start to their day.  He wasted no time charging into 4th by lap two.  He then set his sights on Hudson O’Neal, who held down the 3rd and final transfer position.  Berry worked high and low trying to find a way to get to O’Neal.  As the checkered flag fell on the event, Austin found himself just 0.5 seconds out of that 3rd and final transfer spot.

 

All the hard work had not all been fruitless though.  They found themselves in position to earn the track provisional into the evening’s finale.  The track provisional is awarded to the team highest in the speedway’s season point standings that did not transfer into the feature event.  The team’s entire season of hard work that had propelled them into 4th place in the season standings, paid off in that moment.

 

First off, I have to give a huge thank you to my crew.  How they diagnosed the issue, removed the power steering line, installed a new line, and got me rolling again in time to take a qualifying lap is amazing to me.  That was a significant effort to execute in a handful of minutes.  They get the credit for keeping us in the game today.  I also have to give a shout out to Hayes Mattern who let us borrow his spare, new power steering line.  Can’t thank him enough“, an appreciative Berry said.

 

Berry’s 40-lap A-main run was thankfully uneventful.  Starting at the back of the 26 car field, he finished off his day with a solid effort, coming home 20th.   He noted afterward he was encouraged that the car didn’t drop off over the course of the race, which was a longer one than they normally get to run.  

 

I feel pretty good.  We overcame a lot today.  Along with the blown line, after the B-main we discovered issues with two (spark) plug wires.  Maybe we wouldn’t have even needed the provisional if I would have had all eight (cylinders)”, Berry said with a shrug and a grin.

 

I give our day a ‘B’.  We learned a lot about what we are capable of.  We moved forward every time we hit the track and we passed some of the best in the business.  I learn a lot racing with these guys“.

 

Berry concluded his statements by saying, “Two years ago we would not have even come to this race.  Now our program is at a point where we come and believe we can qualify.  Leaving here today, I know we belong.  We can compete.

Halligan Consistent and Inching Closer to Victory

Confidence and Momentum Continue to Build

Never underestimate the value of back to back solid performances for a race team.  It’s proof one good result wasn’t a fluke.  It confirms correct decisions are being made.  Most of all, it brings confidence.  In motorsports, a confident driver behind the wheel can be more valuable than almost anything else.

 

Jeff Halligan is on exactly such a roll lately.  Saturday’s 4th place finish at Port Royal Speedway was his second consecutive top five finish, not to mention he has passed thirteen cars in recording three top-10 finishes this season.

 

April 9:  Open Wheel Madness / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     (27 cars, Qualifying 2nd, Heat 3rd, A-main 4th)

 

A chilly April afternoon saw 27 teams register to get their shot at the $5,000 winner’s share.  Time trials were completed in a group format, with three groups set by pill draw.

 

Halligan’s qualifying run as part of group two was somewhat eventful.  The Ephrata, PA driver completed a very quick first lap just before the engine on his Risser Motorsports / TheTreeCenter.com / Victory Auto of Lewistown / EMM Sales & Service / Jake’s Golf Carts, No.45 shut off unexpectedly, robbing him of a second lap that would likely have been even better.  Zeb Wise’s second lap knocked Halligan from the top of the chart by 0.062 seconds.

 

Upon his return pit-side, Halligan’s team immediately went to work and resolved the issue in plenty of time for Jeff to assume his starting spot inside row two for the second heat race.  He temporarily slipped back to 4th in the opening laps, but he was able to overtake Blane Heimbach to finish 3rd, just missing the redraw by one spot.

 

As the sun began to set, Halligan lined up 8th for the 25-lap feature event.  From the drop of the green, he began his workmanlike grind toward the front, climbing into 7th after five laps, then to 6th after ten laps.  Halligan was fast and battling with Zeb Wise for a spot in the top five when the red lights flashed on for T.J. Stutts, who was uninjured in the crash.

 

The late break in the action bunched the field with four laps remaining.  Halligan capitalized on the situation, clearing Wise for good to take 5th, then raced past Parker Price-Miller for the 4th spot as the main event drew to a close.

 

We were really good tonight.  Each time I got by someone, I was able to track down the next guy, even in traffic.  I never had a chance to get in clean air to find out how good we really were, but I know we passed some really good cars“, a clearly energized Jeff Halligan said.

 

Halligan now sits 5th in the competitive season championship point standings at Port Royal Speedway.  The top five are only separated by 165 points.  To provide some context, a win is worth 350 points and there are still 25 races remaining in 2022.

 

The car is really balanced well right now.  We just need to improve our starting spot to give ourselves a chance to be on the podium.  In two weeks, we have a big race here (at Port) with the All Stars, so we have been trying things the past few weeks.  We want to make sure we are ready for that race.  You have to be on your game for a race like that”, Halligan commented.

Kyle Reinhardt Continues Preparation for All Star Season

Start of Points Chase Delayed to April 15th at Attica Raceway Park

Kyle Reinhardt has been doing his best to use the month of March to prepare for the upcoming battle.  His second season traveling with the Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions will begin soon, so he and the Capitol Renegade team have been working hard to be ready.  Mother Nature hasn’t exactly cooperated, eliminating three of seven planned races.  His finishes have ranged from the podium to mid-pack, but every outing has been a winner in terms of learning and preparation.

 

Williams Grove Speedway was Reinhardt’s planned destination on April Fool’s Day, but that show fell victim to Mother Nature, leaving the Capitol Renegade team with a trip to Port Royal Speedway as their only opportunity of the weekend to hit the track.

 

April 2:  Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

      (30 cars, qualifying 1st, heat 6th, A-main 14th)

 

The Capitol Renegade / Capitol Custom Coaches & Trailers / Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants / J&J Auto Racing No.91 of Reinhardt was one of thirty 410 sprint cars to enter competition Saturday afternoon.  A group time trial format was in place for the event.  The field was split into three groups by random draw for laps under the clock and heat races.

 

Reinhardt got his day off to a promising start by turning in the fastest qualifying lap in his group.  A four car inversion for heat races put him on the outside of row two for his 8-lap heat race.  The top six finishers would transfer to the feature, but only the top two would earn their place in the redraw for one of the top six starting spots for the finale.

 

On the initial start Reinhardt charged into second spot by the time the field reached the backstretch.  Moments later the red lights flashed on for a crash in turn three.  With no laps complete, the field lined up for a complete restart after the cleanup was complete.  Take number two didn’t play out as well for Reinhardt.  Instead of gaining two spots, he lost one.  A few laps later, he lost another and ended up finishing 6th.

 

Next up was the 25-lap A-main.  To demonstrate how every spot matters, consider how different Reinhardt’s day might have been if not for the red flag in his heat race.  If he holds on to 2nd, he’s guaranteed to start in the top six.  Instead, he found himself starting 17th.  From there, Reinhardt managed to get to 14th by the time the checkered flag fell on the day.

 

I think our track time around home preparing for our regular season has gone well.   It’s been productive.  We definitely know our car better.  We just need to keep racing and continue building on what we’ve started“, Reinhardt said.

 

Reinhardt has had solid outings at Williams Grove thus far in 2022, but Port Royal has been a little more challenging.  After struggling at ‘The Speed Palace’ in 2021, the Neptune City, NJ native has shown improvement.  They have been fast early in the show but haven’t quite put the entire day together there yet.

 

We still have a lot to figure out there (at Port Royal).  We’re gonna keep chipping away at it“, Reinhardt commented.

 

Up Next

 

With the All Stars delaying their season opener due to weather, Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team will spend one more weekend in Pennsylvania preparing for the All Star season.  This weekend, weather permitting, they will race at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, Lincoln Speedway on Saturday, and BAPS Motor Speedway on Sunday.  It’s an unexpected opportunity they will capitalize on to get track time at Lincoln, where Reinhardt will compete in All Star shows later this season.

 

The following week they will finally hit the road to Attica Raceway Park in Ohio to kick off their Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions season.  The season launches with a 2-day show on April 15th & 16th.

Two races may not be enough to draw a conclusion, but if the first two 358 sprint car races of the 2022 season at Lincoln Speedway are any indication, Kody Hartlaub is going to be a factor there all year long.

 

Much like football when a team’s plus/minus turnover ratio is a great indicator of how good a team is, Hartlaub’s plus/minus in four total events (two heats and two features), is indicative of how good he has been.  He has advanced from his starting spot in all four events, netting +8 positions.

 

March 19th:  Lincoln Speedway / Abbottstown, PA

      (30 cars, Heat 2nd, A-main 2nd)

 

The season debut for the 358 sprint cars at Lincoln Speedway drew 30 teams out of their winter hibernation, anxious to get back to racing.  A random pill draw set the lineups for four 10-lap heat races.  The top five finishers from each transferred directly to the A-main, but only the top two would earn a spot in the redraw for a spot in the first four rows of the night’s finale.

 

Hartlaub wasted no time shaking the offseason rust, charging from 5th to 2nd by the time three laps were in the books.  He was able to maintain his position and claim a redraw spot in his Brewer Home Improvements / Moose Blocks / Smith Titanium / SRR Engines / Siegel Racing / T and N Solutions / Jason Emlet Iron Valley Real Estate / Bingham Appraisals / Pretzel Boy / HAAS Shocks / C.H. Folk & Son Feeds / Chop Designs / Herr Electric, Hartlaub Racing No.2.

 

The redraw was friendly to Hartlaub, providing him with the 3rd starting spot for the 20-lap main event.  Kody held a firm grasp on the runner-up spot throughout the event.  He had leader Matt Findley in his sights but couldn’t quite challenge him, flashing under the checkered flag less than one second behind Findley’s No.28.

 

I felt like we were good enough to win.  The track slicked off more than we expected.  We tightened up a little, but maybe not enough.  I was catching Matt (Findley) in lapped traffic, but after the caution he had clear track in front of him”, Hartlaub said.

 

He continued. “Over the offseason, I told myself not to be content this year.  Last year I would settle in and not push hard enough sometimes.  This year I want to be more aggressive and make sure I get everything out of the car that it has to give, but in our first race of the year I thought I had to be smart.  You don’t want to tear your stuff up on the first night“, Hartlaub said, describing the mental tug of war drivers go through when they don’t have unlimited resources.

 

Kody feels he and his team are much better prepared in 2022.  Even little things like being better stocked on parts at the track and having a white board in the trailer so they can make notes to prevent forgetting important information.  Those little things paid off immediately when the team had to replace the MSD ignition box after hot laps.

 

April 2nd:  Lincoln Speedway / Abbottstown, PA

      (30 cars, Heat 2nd, A-main 5th)

 

The 358 sprint cars returned to Lincoln Speedway on April 2nd, once again 30-strong in the pits and once again employing the same qualifying format.

 

Hartlaub lined up 4th for his heat race and bolted into 2nd early in the race, claiming a redraw spot for the second consecutive outing.  The redraw was a little less friendly on this night though, with the East Berlin resident pulling the seven pill, placing him inside row four for the 20-lap main event.

 

After initially settling into 7th, Hartlaub moved into 6th on lap six but at the halfway point, slipped back into 7th.  That didn’t last long though, as Hartlaub battled his way past two cars, including last week’s winner Matt Findley, to take over the 5th position.  Kody held that position for the final eight circuits, securing his second top-5 in as many outings.

 

It’s been really satisfying to see everything we worked so hard on over the offseason paying off like it has.  I’ve challenged myself to minimize mistakes behind the wheel and I feel like I’ve accomplished that so far.  We’re really happy with two top-5’s but we won’t start looking ahead.  We will just keep building on this week by week and do our best each time out.  If we do that, the stats will take care of themselves”, Hartlaub commented.

 

Hartlaub currently sits in a tie with Cameron Smith for 2nd in Lincoln Speedway’s season championship point standings.  The pair trail only Matt Findley in what is expected to be an interesting battle all the way to the final points race on October 15th.

Jeff Halligan Rebounds at The Speed Palace with Top 5 Run

Risser Motorsports Steadily Building Momentum in Early Season

There were a lot of smiles in the Risser Motorsports pit after Jeff Halligan’s top five effort at Port Royal Speedway Saturday night.  They had waited a long two weeks to get back to the track.

 

It was a different scene than two weeks earlier.  That weekend the team missed the show at Williams Grove Speedway, then watched a promising third place starting spot at Port Royal slip away when Halligan ended up turned the wrong direction and in the fence on a chaotic initial start.    

 

When the Risser Motorsports / TheTreeCenter.com / Victory Auto of Lewistown / EMM Sales & Service / Jake’s Golf Carts, No.45 finally rolled out of the trailer again at Port Royal Speedway on April 2nd, Halligan was more than ready to strap back in and turn the page.

 

April 2:  Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     (30 cars, Qualifying 2nd in group, Heat 4th, A-main 5th)

 

Due to forecasted chilly evening temperatures, the start of Saturday’s show at ‘The Speed Palace’ was moved up to 4pm, meaning teams would be treated to another tricky daytime surface.  Thirty teams signed in for the group time trial format show.

 

Halligan kicked things off on a positive note for Risser Motorsports by laying down the 2nd quickest lap in his group.  As a result of the 4-car inversion used to set the heat race lineups, Jeff lined up 3rd for his 8-lap heat race.  While the top six finishers would transfer to the A-main, the real goal was to finish top two.  Only those two would participate in the redraw, ensuring a starting spot in the first three rows for the day’s finale.

 

The car wasn’t quite where it needed to be for the tricky surface and Jeff slipped back a spot on the start.  He was never able to close the gap and had to settle for a 4th place finish, which translated to a 10th place starting spot in the 25-lap feature.  It wasn’t the redraw spot they were aiming for, but on the bright side, they were in the race and they knew what they needed to change.

 

Halligan’s machine was noticeably stronger when the green flag waived on the main event.  He surged into 7th by the completion of the opening lap, continued his charge into 5th with two laps complete, and reached 4th by lap six.  Over the next few laps, four cars waged a heated battle for two positions.  On lap 9 Jeff emerged from the exchange in 5th.  He held that spot to the checkered flag, sealing his first top-5 of the 2022 season.

 

I felt like I left a couple spots on the table.  The guys gave me a really good car.  I made a couple decisions that I wish I could go back and change.  I got myself in dirty air and lost ground I had made up.  Port (Royal) is slick but it always has multiple grooves.  It’s tough to make up ground on a daytime surface “, Halligan explained.

 

“We just need to race the track, make the car better, and be ready to seize opportunities that come to us.  It will help when we can race more.  It’s been tough to get in a rhythm and learn a lot this Spring with the weather we’ve had here in PA, but we’re getting there.  I’m pretty happy with where we are so far “, Halligan commented.

 

While they may not have the finish to prove it, they also feel they were good enough for a podium finish before the crash a couple weeks ago at Port Royal.  Halligan also said the team learned a few things at Williams Grove back in March, so they are looking forward to their next trip to the legendary Mechanicsburg, PA oval.  

 

With over 6 months of racing ahead of them this season, it’s highly likely this team will make some headlines in Central PA in 2022.

Berry Back on Track with Top 5 at Port Royal

ABR Up to 4th in Season Championship Point Standings

Austin Berry Racing came out of the gate strong in 2022, showing they had been doing their homework, learning from their opportunities in recent years, and applying it all to race consistently at a higher level.

 

A couple weeks ago they returned to their race shop after a two-race weekend, frustrated and scratching their heads a bit after 11th and 16th place finishes at Williams Grove and Port Royal respectively.  It wasn’t just the finishes really, it was the way the car handled and failed to respond positively to their changes.

 

It was time to hit the reset button.  To ‘go back to work’, as Berry put it.  Inclement weather provided an off weekend and an opportunity to do so.  The team went over the car with a fine tooth comb, replaced a couple damaged parts, and went back to the setup they started with a month earlier.

 

The team returned to Port Royal Speedway this past weekend with The Tire Mart / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Kevin Nouse Designs – K1 Race Gear / DMI / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / DirtCarLifts / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86 to find out what dividends their efforts would pay.  The results were certainly positive.

 

April 2:  Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     (23 cars, Qualifying 1st, Heat 2nd, A-main 5th)

 

The first Saturday in April found 23 super late model teams signed in to compete on a sunny but seasonably chilly day in Central Pennsylvania.  A random pill draw was used to separate the field into three groups for combined hot lap / time trial sessions.

 

Austin Berry wasted no time showing they were ready to race at the front of the field again.  He posted the quickest lap in group three with a 19.382, which was also the fastest lap in the entire field.

 

I’m very happy to see that the work we did following our subpar performance a couple weeks ago paid off.  That’s rewarding “, Berry said following the solid start to his day.

 

The top four in each group were inverted to set the heat race lineups, so Berry rolled off 4th in heat number three.  Finishing in the top two was the primary goal because those drivers from each heat would participate in the redraw for one of the top six starting spots in the feature event.  Once again Berry was strong from the drop of the green, surging into 2nd on the opening circuit of his 8-lap heat race.  

 

On lap three, Matt Cosner slipped by Berry to claim second, but the battle for a redraw spot wasn’t over.  Berry remained poised and worked his way past Cosner and back into second on lap five.  He then set his sights on leader Dylan Yoder.  Berry closed the gap slightly but there wasn’t enough time remaining to mount a challenge for the win.

 

The redraw could have been friendlier to Berry, but you have to play the hand you are dealt.  He pulled number 6, putting him outside the third row for the 25-lap, $3,000 to win feature event.  By lap two, Austin had claimed the 5th position and turned his focus toward Gary Stuhler, just ahead in 4th.

 

While Berry was on the move into the top five, Colton Flinner had claimed the lead, with Trever Feathers, Dylan Yoder and Gary Stuhler in pursuit.  An early yellow slowed the event but following that, the event went caution-free the rest of the way.  The top five remained largely in tact, with only a couple position changes occurring late in the race.  Berry was on the heels of Feathers in the closing laps but wasn’t able to get close enough strike, and rode home with a solid top five.

 

That was one of the best cars I’ve ever had in the slick.  The car didn’t take off very well, but it continued to build speed throughout the feature.  If we could’ve taken off the way we ended, we would’ve been much better.  We’ve still got work to do.  We’re still a long way off from that 48 “, Berry said, referring to Colton Flinner who has been the class of the field thus far in 2022 at Port Royal Speedway.

 

Berry is off to a solid start nonetheless.  His top-5 and earlier top-10 have him currently sitting in 4th in Port Royal’s season championship point standings, only five points out of 3rd place.

Update on Zach Newlin’s Recovery

It has been two weeks since Zach Newlin’s hard crash at Port Royal Speedway.  Since the accident, Newlin has been attending physical therapy to work on his balance issues and other symptoms related to his original vertigo diagnosis.

 

Newlin is improving but his therapy has evolved to better treat his symptoms.  His case is now being handled as a mild-concussion.  Newlin will be reevaluated in about a week.

 

I don’t have any headaches or nausea, so that means it’s mild, which is good news “, Newlin shared.

 

He doesn’t know yet exactly when he will return to the seat of a sprint car, but it will likely be a week or two longer than originally hoped.  His original goal of returning to pilot the Mansberger Motorsports No.21m 358 sprint car at Williams Grove Speedway on April 8th is unlikely at this point.  It will likely be mid or late April before Newlin is ready to return to that seat or the Pryde Motorsports No.29 410 sprint car. 

 

I’d like to thank everyone who has reached out to check on me.  I appreciate all the get well wishes.  There is a lot of racing to go this year, so I’m not going to push it to come back before I’m ready “, Newlin commented.

Reinhardt Posts Runner-Up Finish at Williams Grove

Strong Start Continues with Another Top-5

Now is the time to figure out how to get better.  How to find speed.  To learn what I can do to the car and what I can’t“, Kyle Reinhardt said recently on the Sprint Car Unlimited podcast.

 

That is Reinhardt’s objective for March 2022 as he prepares for the upcoming Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions season.  Every choice, every decision since the end of last season has been aimed at being the absolute most-prepared he can be for the series’ tour.  Sometimes that meant being smart, staying home and saving his resources.   When mid-March arrived, it was time to get started.

 

For the second consecutive Friday night, Reinhardt and team rolled the Capitol Renegade / Capitol Custom Coaches & Trailers / Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants / J&J Auto Racing No.91 into the pit area at Williams Grove Speedway for another night of homework, so to speak.  The first outing was deemed a success when the team logged a top-5 finish.  Now they were back looking to continue building their notebook and their momentum.

 

March 25:  Williams Grove Speedway / Mechanicsburg, PA

     (27 cars, Heat 1st, A-main 2nd)

 

The format for the 27 car field on week two at ‘The Grove’ called for three 10-lap heats, lined up by random draw.  The top six finishers of each would transfer to the night’s feature event, but only the top four would make the redraw.

 

Kyle Reinhardt lined up on the pole of heat number three and quickly showed strength, jumping out to a ten-car-length lead on the opening lap.  By lap nine he had built up a 3.5 second lead over Ryan Smith, but the caution lights flashed on for a slowing car.  The Neptune City, NJ native withstood a good restart by Smith and held on to win the heat race by 0.815 seconds.

 

The redraw put Reinhardt in the middle of the top ten to start the 25-lap A-main.  He looked strong, holding onto his 6th starting spot throughout the first ten laps.  In the middle of the event, Reinhardt picked up a couple spots on subsequent restarts and found himself in 3rd when the race entered the last ten laps.

 

At that stage, the Capitol Renegade No.91 got even quicker.  Reinhardt was rolling the bottom in turns 1 & 2 better than anyone else.  Not only was he gaining ground, he was staying out of trouble while the higher side of that end of the track was reaching out and biting some of the competition.  With 6 laps remaining, Reinhardt ripped off his fastest lap of the race, breaking into the 17 second bracket.  On the final lap, Reinhardt ran down Ryan Smith and wrestled 2nd away, capturing his first podium finish of 2022 and his second consecutive top-5 at Williams Grove.

 

If it had gone without a caution and we could’ve raced in lapped traffic, I think we had a chance to get to the front, but it didn’t play out that way“, Reinhardt said.

 

After two solid outings at the Mechanicsburg, PA oval, Reinhardt sits 3rd in the season points close behind Dylan Norris and Justin Peck.  It could be a preview for the upcoming All Star season, where Peck and Reinhardt will be two of the top contenders this year.

 

I feel really good after our first three races.  The car has really good balance.  We have a really good baseline for anywhere we go.  We know where we can make adjustments.  I’m making the calls myself this year and my guys are working really hard.  Can’t thank them enough.  We’re off to a good start”, Reinhardt shared.

 

Saturday’s planned trip to Reinhardt’s home state of NJ was scrapped when Bridgeport Motorsports Park cancelled due to weather, then ‘plan B’ at Port Royal Speedway fell victim to Mother Nature as well.  Sunday’s trip to Selinsgrove was also lost as a result of unseasonably cold weather.

 

We have a couple more races remaining before the All Star schedule starts.  Our goal is to continue to run up front at The Grove and to go back to Port (Royal) and get up front by applying what we learned a few weeks ago up there.  If we can accomplish both, it will be a good weekend”, Reinhardt concluded.

For their final tune-ups before kicking off the All Star Circuit of Champions season, Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team will make return trips to Williams Grove Speedway (PA) on Friday, April 1st and Port Royal Speedway (PA) the following night.

Zach Newlin Recovering from Hard Hit at Port Royal

Injury Will Sideline Wheelman for a Few Weeks

As Sunday afternoon’s event unfolded at Port Royal Speedway, Zach Newlin was writing a pretty good story.  He was having a solid outing.  As the sun began to set, the only remaining question was how the final chapter would read. 

 

Spoiler alert:  It wasn’t a happy ending.  Newlin will be out of action for a few weeks while he heals.

 

March 20:  Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal,  PA

     (25 cars, Qualifying 3rd in group 1, Heat 4th, A-main 24th) 

 

Newlin started 10th in Sunday’s A-main in the Grove Financial & Associates /

Dillman Hauling / Del Grosso Foods / Ron’s RV Sales / Kirby Kitner Excavating / FIT Transportation / Christine Booher, Realtor / Gio’s BBQ / T&M Homebuilders / Robert Lee Jr. Trucking / R&B Auto Proz / Strange Oval / Walker Performance Filtration / RAM Acoustics / Newlin Bar Service, Pryde Motorsports No.29.

 

As the field entered turn one on the start of the event, a car near the front of the field spun up the banking, across the track in front of the charging field.  Momentum carried the car all the way to the cushion, directly in the path of Newlin who was flying around the top of turn one.

 

Zach had no time to take evasive action and made hard impact with the stationary car, sending the Pryde Motorsports No.29 of Newlin flipping hard across the track toward turn two.  The initial high-speed impact was certainly significant, but the secondary impact was even harder.  Despite efforts to steer clear, another

passing car struck Newlin’s car while it was upside down.  Newlin’s car came to rest upside down in turn two, putting the Millerstown, PA native in a precarious position.

 

When everything stopped, I knew I was completely upside down.  I was awake and aware throughout the crash and afterwards.  I started talking to the rescue personnel right away because I wanted to get out quickly.  I’m sure I freaked out a little bit and got in a hurry because of a past experience“, Newlin shared.

 

Newlin was able to extricate himself from the destroyed race car.  He was immediately escorted to an ambulance for evaluation.

 

I guess a lot of the fans thought I was limping as I moved away from the car, but it wasn’t my leg, it was my unsteady balance that caused it.  I had to lean on the EMT’s to walk to the ambulance, then I sat and collected myself for a few minutes while they checked me over“, Newlin explained.  Eventually Zach was permitted to return to his pit area to pack up and head home.

 

The following morning, Newlin was experiencing some mild symptoms that were not present the night before.  Tests cleared Zach of a concussion but found the crash had caused him to develop vertigo.  As a result of the diagnosis, Newlin will need to sit out a few weeks to heal.

 

This week they are having me start some therapy to help speed up the recovery.  My shoulders and arm are bruised, but everything did its job.  The car held up good, the safety belts did their job, and my Hybrid (head and neck) restraint did what it was supposed to“,  Newlin said.

 

Zach’s goal is to be ready to strap back in on Friday, April 8th aboard the Mansberger Motorsports No.21m at Williams Grove Speedway.  Time will tell.

 

One aspect of a hard crash that many fans don’t often think about is the toll it takes on the driver’s safety equipment.  While he heals, Newlin also must go over all of his.  His five-point harness safety belt system will need to be replaced because belts become stretched during an impact such as Zach’s.  He will also have his helmet and Hybrid head and neck restraint system (a variation of a HANS device) evaluated to ensure neither has been not compromised.

 

If you are not familiar with head and neck restraints, the purpose of a HANS or Hybrid device is to keep the head from whipping in a crash, preventing excessive rotational movement as a secondary protection, without otherwise restricting movement of the neck.  In other words, it restricts head movements during a crash that would exceed normal range and cause severe injury.  A person’s body is decelerated by the seat belt, with the head maintaining velocity until it is decelerated by the neck.  A head and neck restraint device maintains the relative position of the head to the body, in addition to transferring energy to the much stronger chest, torso, shoulder, seat belts and seat as the head is decelerated.

 

While Newlin heals, Pryde Motorsports will button up their backup car and work to replace the lost equipment, so they are ready to return to the track when their driver is.
