ABR Addressing Motor Issues, Looking for Qualifying Speed in 2024

Tickets Are Now on Sale for the ABR 2024 Kickoff Party, Read Details Here

Mifflin, PA – November 22, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

It’s that time of year again when race teams assess their program and begin preparations for the new season, making improvements and adjustments based on weak spots and lessons learned.  While Austin Berry Racing carries out those tasks, they are also preparing to celebrate with their fans and build excitement for the 2024 season.

Before we look back at the 2023 season and hear from Austin about the team’s plans to address their biggest pain point, let’s take a look at everything you need to know about the upcoming party the team is putting together!

PARTY TIME WITH THE FANS

To get everyone primed for the upcoming racing season, Austin Berry Racing will hold its 2024 Season Kickoff Party on January 27th at the Port Royal Speedway commercial building.

It will be the second consecutive year for the event.  The 2023 edition was a win-win for everyone.  The event was very popular with fans and successful for the race team as well.

It’s always cool to take advantage of chances to meet fans and supporters!  It’s always a really good time and it gives fans a chance to talk to the race team and myself out of race mode.”, Berry said.  “Fans get to see the personalities that all the guys have and we get to know them.  We enjoy connecting with fans so they can stop by and say hi anytime during the season and they are a familiar face to us.

The evening begins at 5pm with a dinner of BBQ chicken, seasoned potatoes, and Texas beans.

At 7pm Chris Woodward and Shindiggin’ will take the stage to deliver live music.  The band promises it’s “always a rockin’ country party” when they show up!

Throughout the evening there will be cash giveaway drawings, 50/50 drawings, raffle baskets, and other games.  There will be something for everyone.

Just 300 tickets will be sold for the dinner and music evening, with prices discounted to $25/person until December 31st, 2023.  During January, prices will increase to $30/person.  If availability remains, tickets will be $35 at the door.

Earlier in the day from 11am-3pm, ABR will host their 2nd Annual Cornhole Tournament in the same facility at Port Royal Speedway.  The tournament is limited to 40 teams, with preregistration required.  Registration is $40/team and payouts to the top four teams are guaranteed.  The winning team will take home $300, with 2nd through 4th receiving $160, $80, and $40 respectively.  Concessions will be available during the tournament.

To obtain tickets for the evening event or to preregister for the cornhole tournament, fans can call 717-994-8451 or message the team via Facebook.

Tickets for the evening dinner and music event are also available at AustinBerryRacing.com in the merchandise store.  Tickets purchased via the website will be held at will-call to be picked up the day of the event.

Anyone who is interested in donating a basket for the raffle can contact the team via any of the same methods listed for tickets and registration.  The team will promote your business or cause on social media in exchange for the donation.

ASSESSING 2023 AND ABR'S PATH

The 2023 season contained a few really shining moments for Austin Berry.  No, they didn’t find victory lane, but they kicked off the season with a top-ten finish, posted a runner-up finish at Selinsgrove in May after leading the most laps, and kicked off June with a top five at Port Royal and a podium in their first ever race at Clinton County during Appalachian Mountain Speedweek.

Statistically, the 2023 season was very similar to 2022 but that wasn’t the goal.  Berry and his team were looking to log more podium finishes, top fives, and top tens, and of course, hopefully get back to victory lane.

It was the similar statistics and the finishes in between those shining moments that made Berry feel he was underachieving and not making the progress he and the team expected of themselves.

There was a recurring theme behind that feeling.  A closer look shows The Tire Mart Tire Pros of Harrisburg, Juniata Veterinary Clinic, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, SRI Performance / Stock Car Steel & Aluminum, VP Racing Fuels, JDS Racing, Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, Nathan Berry Beef Farm, Addicted2DirtPR.com, GO Lithium, Valvoline Pro-V Racing, Super Clean, Rocket Chassis, Austin Berry Racing No.86 raced really well but often couldn’t overcome early qualifying laps that didn’t put the team in an optimal position for the night.

This certainly isn’t a gloom-and-doom story though.  There are a lot of other positives to go with the shining moments we covered earlier.

The team logged more races than it ever had in the past and only missed qualifying for the main event twice all season.  Another positive note was only one DNQ was a mechanical issue, plus Berry’s average finish for the season was just outside the top ten.

I think that we have definitely gotten a lot more consistent. We no longer have flashes of brightness and then struggle to make the show the next weekend. With the exception of national touring series races, we are consistently qualifying for shows and making most of those through the heat races.“, Berry shared.

We haven’t found the consistent speed early in the night to put ourselves in a starting position where we are capable of winning.  We only started on the front row twice this past season.”

Our team has been on a steady progression since 2019.  I know it hasn’t come as quickly as any of us have wanted it to, especially me, but if we stay the of course and continue to work with our awesome partners, we will be fighting for multiple wins a season in the near future.

TAKING A STEP BACK MENTALLY

After the season’s second engine failure sidelined his super late model program in late August, taking away three or four more potential starts, Berry decided to take a friend up on an offer to borrow a steel block engine and have a little fun racing with the limited late models.

He took to the track three times in September, each at a different speedway, and logged finishes of 4th, 2nd, and 8th.

Running the limited was probably one of the highlights of the year, to be honest, not only for me but also for the race team. It was just fun to put it bluntly!  We had absolutely zero expectations and we were going to just have fun and race.  It allowed all of us to open up our mindsets and kind of just let loose a little bit.“, a smiling Berry shared.

I had no idea what to expect from the driver’s seat with the drop in horsepower and we didn’t really know where our setups needed to be either, so we just went and raced and I think it actually allowed us to learn more about our racecar and learn ways that we can be better when we go back super racing in 2024.

2024 PREPARATIONS

It’s no secret the Achilles heel for Austin Berry Racing in recent years has been motors.  A team on a limited budget unfortunately can’t buy brand new, top-of-the-line powerplants.

We tried to grow depth in our motor program in recent years, working to have two motors so we didn’t have to be sidelined when we had issues.  Late in 2023, we decided to shift from quantity to quality.  We bought a lightly used Cornett Racing Engine and ended up having a small issue with that, but in the long run, it will be much better for us.“, Berry explained.

The team also moved on from their engine builder of recent years and will work with local builder Barron’s Racing Engines for the coming season.

Heading into 2024 we are prepping the Cornett, crossing all the T’s and dotting all the I’s.  We are going over everything, installing new fuel lines and other components on the car to make sure all of that is fresh.  We are also working with Randy at SRI Performance to upgrade our entire brake package.  Ours was getting worn out, so the time was right to improve that aspect too.

Aside from those things, the offseason is full of the normal maintenance work.  The team will be making a trip to Rocket Chassis in West Virginia this winter to have the frame checked and fix up a couple of minor tweaks on the front end.

The team will officially close out 2023 by attending PRI, the Performance Racing Industry trade show in Indianapolis, Indiana December 7th-9th.  It’s a big part of preparing for the upcoming season.

PRI is our best opportunity to maintain the relationships we have with our partners because everyone is in one place at the same time, unlike during racing season, we all have the time available to talk things over, share information, and make plans for the new season.“, Berry said.

We also go to PRI to develop new relationships and partnerships.  There are a lot of educational seminars that help us build aspects of our program both on and off the track.  It’s a productive and fun few days for sure.

Feathers Records Runner-up Finish in Fall Classic at Natural Bridge

With Curtain Closed on 2023, Attention Turns Fully to 2024 Prep

Natural Bridge, VA – October 18, 2023

With the leaves beginning to change color, Trever Feathers had already parked his super late model to begin 2024 preparations but he was still looking to get one more race under his belt before calling it a season.

In 2022 Feathers was victorious at Natural Bridge Speedway’s Fall Classic for super late models.  It is a facility that he enjoys competing at, so when the announcement came that the 2023 edition of the 50-lap, $ 5,000-to-win race would be for limited late models, he connected with Brad Omps’ to take the seat of the No.5T for the event.

  • City, State:   Natural Bridge, VA
  • Quick Stats:  29 cars, Qualifying 3rd, Heat 1st (1), Dash 3rd (2), A-main 2nd (3)

CLOSING IT OUT

Feathers unloaded as one of twenty-nine competitors on hand to take a shot at capturing the Fall Classic.  Mother Nature threatened the region all weekend and despite some minor delays as a result, Natural Bridge Speedway did finally get action underway and complete the night’s action.

Despite hitting the track for time trials in the back half of the field, Feathers put the 3rd quickest lap of the qualifying session on the board, earning him the pole of the third heat race.

Feathers dominated the 8-lap heat race, winning by 1.553 seconds over runner-up Cody Wright.

The heat race victory put Feathers into the Dash 4 Cash that would set the first three rows of the feature lineup.  By luck of the draw, he started outside the front row and held the runner-up spot in the early going.

Feathers was challenging for the lead in the Dash when the handling of his ride changed abruptly.  He ultimately slipped to a 3rd place finish.

After an early evening rain delay, the program was moved along quickly—that limited Feather’s time to investigate the handling issue prior to the main event.  The team checked the car over but was unable to identify what caused the sudden change in handling.

The 50-lap feature provided plenty of time for Feathers to find his way to the front from his 3rd starting spot.  Seven laps into the race he moved past Justin Williams to claim 2nd and set his sights on leader Kyle Hardy.

Still battling the earlier issues that cropped up, Feathers pursued the top spot but was unable to get there.  He settled for the runner-up finish just 1.684 seconds back.

Our car was so good all night but we did develop some kind of issue a few laps into the dash and we fought that the rest of the night.”, Feathers commented.  “Early on it was really in the track but then I just got loose on entry.  It was still a good night for us and a good way to wrap up our year.

LOOKING AHEAD

Last weekend was the final race of the season for Feathers.  With the curtain closed on 2023, his attention has fully turned to preparation for 2024.

In order to fully prepare for next season, Feathers’ goal is to have his No.20 super late model completely torn down, refreshed, and rebuilt by the end of November.  That work is already underway.

The work doesn’t stop there.  The race shop, trailer, and toter all need attention.  There is maintenance, parts stocking, and plenty of other work to get done.

In today’s late model racing, you win more races as a result of your effort at the shop than you do purely on race night.  We have always put in the work throughout the winter to be the best-prepared team we can, and this offseason will be no different.”, Feathers shared.

Feathers wants to grow the team, expand the schedule, and travel more, so he will also invest time working alongside Addicted2Dirt PR and Media Management to build relationships to bring new marketing partners to the team, as well as maintain relationships with current marketing partners.

We would like to be able to expand our schedule from the 20-25 races our budget allows right now.  Our goal is 35-40 races in 2024.  We would like to get down south to places like Tennessee to race more, or maybe get to the Midwest for some bigger races, but we need to add a key partner to reach those goals.“, Feathers said.

I am blessed to have an amazing group of people around me that support what we do.  My uncle Jimmy, my granddad, my dad and mom, Larry Royston, Jon Coffelt, Rick Leggett, Jonathan DeHaven…the list goes on.  Everything they contribute, big or small, adds up and makes this possible.  I can’t possibly thank them enough.

The reason we want to travel more is to make ourselves better.  You get better by challenging yourself against tough competition and on new race tracks.  Sometimes the best way to learn is to get your ass kicked.  We want to compete with the best, so we are ready to do the work to achieve that.“, Feathers concluded.

SEASON STATS

Trever Feathers Wins Lincoln Super Late Model Clash

Third Victory Puts Exclamation Point on Strong Second Half of 2023

Abbottstown, PA – October 11, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

After his first ten races of the 2023 season, Trever Feathers had an average finish of 13.2 and no wins.  At that point, the team made changes, the cornerstone of which was a move to Team Zero Race Cars.

What a difference fans have seen since that change occurred at the beginning of July.

Feathers has an average finish of 7.1 in his last ten races, and that stretch includes three wins.  If you set the Lucas Oil Late Model series races aside, he has an average finish of 4.25 in his last eight starts.

The most recent victory, which required a late-race rebound by Feathers, occurred this past Saturday night at Lincoln Speedway in the Lazer Late Model Clash at the wheel of the McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, Larry Royston’s Septic Services, Martins Pumping Service, Feathers & Sons Roofing, North River Farm, Leggett Engine Research, Hot Rod Septic Treatment, Team Zero Race Cars, Shane McDowell Racing, Coffelt Graphics, Larry Royston Properties, Larry Royston Equipment, Fox Racing Shox, Bo Feathers Racing, Clem’s Garage, No.20.

A CAREER FIRST

Feathers signed in at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, PA on Saturday night as part of a quality 29-car field on hand to take their shot at the $3,500 winner’s share that was up for grabs.

The event used the PA Late Model Speedweek format, which kicked off with time trials.  The fastest eight advanced directly to a timed dash later in the evening to set the top four rows of the main event.  Meanwhile, the remainder of the field would be split to compete in two qualifiers and a consolation race to set the rest of the starting field.

Feathers came out of the gate fast and locked himself into the dash with the 5th quickest overall lap.  Applying what he learned by way of some adjustments to his Team Zero No.20, he then went on to lay down the fastest lap in the timed dash, which put the Winchester, VA native on the pole for the Lazer Late Model Clash finale.

Working the bottom of the speedway during the opening laps of the 30-lap feature, Feathers got out front and took command.  Ross Robinson worked the top of the speedway following an early restart and slipped by on the outside to take the lead.

The pair ran one-two for the next thirty laps.  Feathers never left Robinson get more than a few car lengths away.  When they caught lapped traffic, Feathers closed in.

Feathers pulled alongside Robinson with three laps remaining and took the lead for good with just two circuits to go.  He held on to take the victory.

I’m glad I got by when I did.  I got so focused on him (Ross) and looking for a shot to get by, I didn’t realize I was running out of laps until I saw the white flag.”, a happy Feathers said.  “I don’t really agree with the mentality that it’s better to be in second when you get to lapped traffic.  I would have rather been out front, controlling the race.  My dad (Bo Feathers) taught me to race everybody the same and I stick to that approachI think that helped me during the last five laps.

Feathers definitely got through traffic efficiently.  Once taking command, he built up a 1.134-second advantage over the two remaining laps.

This car is a breath of fresh air.  I can’t thank Shane McDowell enough for helping us get this car going.”, Feathers added.  “We made the right tire choice tonight.  I was a little free on entry, so I was on the edge and had to be careful not to over-rotate but this car was great.”

As a driver, when things aren’t going right like earlier this year, you start to doubt yourself, both with adjustments and behind the wheel.  I didn’t change anything about how I drive or the adjustments I make.  The only change we made was to get this car, and now it all clicks.  That’s a huge confidence boost, not only for me but the whole team.  I am always striving to be better, in the shop and on the track.  In this sport, you have to be constantly learning and preparing to handle new situations.

UP NEXT

This weekend, weather permitting, Feathers will head to Natural Bridge Speedway in Virginia where he will wheel Brad Omps’ No.5T limited late model in the Fall Classic on Saturday night.

On the super late model front, Feathers has decided to draw the curtain on his 2023 season and turn his attention to 2024 preparations.  The team will be working to build depth to their program from cars, to spare parts, to partnerships.

We are definitely looking to add partners for 2024 and that work is already underway.  We feel we have good things to offer potential partners so they get value for their investment.  We would like to travel more and race more in general.  We are open to working with a marketing partner to race where and when is good for them.“, Feathers commented.

Feathers’ goal is to go over his No.20 super late model from top to bottom, freshening parts with new parts with a target of having it ready. for 2024 by the end of November.

Feathers’ Visit to Georgetown Gets Muddied Up

Lincoln’s Lazer Late Model Clash Up Next Saturday

Winchester, VA – October 5, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Trever Feathers had plans to head to Georgetown Speedway Saturday night for the annual Camp Barnes Benefit, but Mother Nature had other ideas.

The race and his trip toward the eastern coastline was delayed to Sunday by the weather, so Feathers switched to ‘Plan B’ for Saturday night and strapped into Brad Omps’ No.5T limited late model at Winchester (VA) Speedway instead.

QUICK RESULTS

  • Quick Stats:  Qualifying 1st in group, Heat 1st, A-main 4th

DATE:  October 1, 2023

  • Event:  Camp Barnes Benefit
  • Track:  Georgetown Speedway
  • City, State:   Georgetown, DE
  • Quick Stats:  Heat 8th (4), A-main 14th (16)

CHANGE OF PLANS

Saturday night was the third time in the past month that Feathers took advantage of an open schedule to race the No.5T at Winchester.  He had already racked up two quick times, a heat win, and feature finishes of 1st and 3rd in his first two outings.

Picking up where he left off, Feathers was fast time in his group and won his heat race with a four-second advantage.

The redraw handed Feathers the 4th starting spot for the main event but he was unable to make any forward progress and finished in the same spot.

ACROSS THE BAY BRIDGE

Feathers was fast out of the trailer with his McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, Larry Royston’s Septic Services, Martins Pumping Service, Feathers & Sons Roofing, North River Farm, Leggett Engine Research, Hot Rod Septic Treatment, Team Zero Race Cars, Shane McDowell Racing, Coffelt Graphics, Larry Royston Properties, Larry Royston Equipment, Fox Racing Shox, Bo Feathers Racing, Clem’s Garage, No.20 Sunday evening in Delaware, posting the 2nd quickest effort in hot laps.

In his heat race, Feathers blasted from the 4th starting spot to the runner-up position on the opening lap.  He gave chase to leader Bryan Bernheisel but soon noticed his No.20 began pushing water out the overflow.  The engine temp began to climb, forcing the Winchester, VA native to the pits prematurely and making him officially the 8th place finisher.

Feathers’ team found the source of their problem.  A clump of mud had knocked the belt off the water pump.  With repairs made, Feathers joined the rear of the starting lineup for the 30-lap feature.

At the drop of the green on the main event, Feathers once again showed how good his Team Zero car was.  He charged toward the front, cracking the top ten before the race was ten laps old.

Feathers reached 8th a few laps later and appeared poised to be headed toward the top five when the car suddenly got tight and pushed hard entering the turns.

Feathers lost a couple of spots and had his hands full with a very ill-handling racecar.  Just past the halfway mark, rather than fight and abuse his equipment, he took it pit-side and was credited with 14th.

The reason for the sudden change quickly became apparent.  A clump of mud had caved in the filler panel, which is located above the nose of the car.

Well, I guess that’s racing.”, Feathers said about his tough night.  “With the speeds we run here, aerodynamics are critical.  Once our filler panel was caved in like that, I had my hands full.  We can’t afford to bust our stuff up, so I had to call it a night.

“I love coming here.  The facility, the people…hanging out with guys like Clayton (Peters) and everyone we see when we are here.  I love the trip over the Bay Bridge anytime I can do that.  But man, we haven’t had any luck here lately.

UP NEXT

Feathers will return to Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, PA on Saturday night for the Lazer Late Model Clash in the McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, Larry Royston’s Septic Services, Martins Pumping Service, Feathers & Sons Roofing, North River Farm, Leggett Engine Research, Hot Rod Septic Treatment, Team Zero Race Cars, Shane McDowell Racing, Coffelt Graphics, Larry Royston Properties, Larry Royston Equipment, Fox Racing Shox, Bo Feathers Racing, Clem’s Garage, No.20 super late model.

For the second consecutive weekend, Trever Feathers climbed aboard the Brad Omps-owned 5T limited late model to compete at his hometown track, Winchester Speedway in Virginia.  Feathers was victorious the previous week and returned looking to back up the impressive run.

QUICK RESULTS

  • Track:  Winchester Speedway
  • City, State:   Winchester, VA
  • Quick Stats:  Qualifying 1st, Heat 1st (1), A-main 3rd (6)

GOOD ISN'T ALWAYS ENOUGH

Feathers was on top of his game right out of the box again Friday night, setting quick time in qualifying.  He backed it up by winning his heat, finishing just ahead of car owner Omps.

The redraw handed Feathers the 6th starting spot for the feature.  He fell as far back as 9th during some heated battles but found his rhythm and recovered to record a 3rd-place finish.

We were good enough to contend for the win, but ran out of laps after getting caught up in some stuff earlier.“, Feathers said.  “Glad we were able to recover and get on the podium.

Austin Berry Picks Up Top Ten at Small Car Nationals

Season Is a Wrap for ABR

Hagerstown, MD – September 21, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Photo Credit:  WRT Speedwerx / Jason Walls

Austin Berry has been on a late season roll since being forced to end his super late model season due to the loss of two engines and shift gears to the limited late model ranks.

The postponement of Hagerstown Speedway’s Small Car Nationals for limited late models to September 16th gave Berry the opportunity to add it to his schedule.

QUICK RESULTS

DATE:  September 8, 2023

  • Event:  Small Car Nationals
  • Track:  Hagerstown Speedway
  • City, State:   Hagerstown, MD
  • Division:  Limited Late Model
  • Quick Stats:  30 cars, Qualifying 16th, Heat 3rd (4), A-main 8th (13)

IT'S NOT EASY

The rescheduled limited late model event brought 30 of the top teams from the region to compete.  In this third career start in the division, Austin Berry turned in the 16th quickest lap during time trials in The Tire Mart Tire Pros of Harrisburg, Juniata Veterinary Clinic, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, SRI Performance / Stock Car Steel & Aluminum, VP Racing Fuels, JDS Racing, Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, Nathan Berry Beef Farm, Addicted2DirtPR.com, GO Lithium, Valvoline Pro-V Racing, Super Clean, Rocket Chassis, Austin Berry Racing No.86.

Berry’s time was disappointing to the Mifflin, PA driver given the speed the team had shown in their first two outings in the division.  It put Berry in a hole he would need to dig out of to reach the front of the field in the main event.  From outside row two in his heat race, he gained some ground back with a 3rd place finish.

Starting 13th on the grid in the 30-lap main event, Berry went forward at the drop of the green.  He broke into the top ten on lap four but then slipped back to 11th at the midpoint of the race.

Berry regained his rhythm and began to go forward again late in the race.  He reached 8th with six laps remaining and took the checkered flag in that position.

We weren’t very good tonight, so I’ll take a top ten.”, Berry said.  “This is a good group of cars and it’s a very competitive division, so I don’t expect it to be easy, but we should’ve timed better and put ourselves in a more competitive position for the night.  We just messed up early and couldn’t fully recover.

UP NEXT

Berry and his team have made the decision to draw the curtain on their 2023 season so they can get started on the work required to prepare for 2024.

News Coming Soon on PanCan Raffle Items and 2024 Season Kickoff Party Tickets

With the season coming to a close, Berry will be raffling off the team’s tail banner that has been used all season to cover the rear suspension of the car, plus his special edition Pancreatic Cancer Awareness racing gloves.  Details will be coming soon on how to enter.  All proceeds will go to charity.

In January, Austin Berry Racing will host their annual season kickoff party which features great food, prizes and a live band.  The popular event sold out last year with just over 300 fans attending.  It was a fun event for all who attended and a big success for the team.  Stay tuned for more information about that event in the coming months.

Feathers Wins Winchester Limited Lates For Brad Omps

Winchester, VA – September 18, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Friday night, for the second consecutive year, Trever Feathers jumped behind the wheel of Brad Omps’ No.5T limited late model and drove to victory in September at Winchester (VA) Speedway.

QUICK RESULTS

DATE:  September 15, 2023

  • Event:  Nichole Hess Tribute Race
  • Track:  Winchester Speedway
  • City, State:   Winchester, VA
  • Quick Stats:  20 cars, Qualifying 1st, Heat 2nd (1), A-main 1st (6)

TWO IN A ROW

Exactly one week after his super late model win at Port Royal Speedway, Feathers made a rare limited late model start Friday night.

Feathers was part of a 20 car field signed into compete for the $1,992 winner’s share of the Nichole Hess Tribute Race at Winchester Speedway in his Virginia hometown.

Feathers served notice quickly that he would be a factor by posting quick time in qualifying.  He followed that up with a runner-up finish to Brad Omps in his heat race.

In the feature event, Feathers started 6th but moved quickly to the front, taking command on lap five.  It was never in question after that as the Winchester, VA native was never challenged.  He claimed the victory by four seconds over veteran Gary Stuhler.

I have to thank Brad for the opportunity to drive his car.  His stuff is always good and this car was spot on tonight.  I could run it wherever I wanted and as hard as I needed to.“, a very happy Feathers said.  “Always cool to win here our hometown.”

Berry Scores Top Ten Finish in Last Minute Schedule Addition

Hagerstown and Selinsgrove Limited Late Model Action Up Next

Port Royal, PA – September 13, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Austin Berry’s two super late model engines are both sidelined for repairs, so the Mifflin, PA driver had no plans to hit the track last weekend.

He had recently bolted a borrowed limited late model engine under the hood and produced a couple outstanding runs with it but there were no plans to race that either.

Late Friday afternoon when he learned of a low turnout of super late models at Port Royal Speedway as a result of an extremely ominous weather forecast, Berry did some math and changed his mind.

QUICK RESULTS

DATE:  September 8, 2023

  • Event:  Final Points Race
  • Track:  Port Royal Speedway
  • City, State:   Port Royal, PA
  • Division:  Super Late Model
  • Quick Stats:  18 cars, Qualifying DNS, A-main 10th (18)

LAST MINUTE SCRAMBLE

Berry’s blown engine during the Lucas Oil Late Model event weekend at Port Royal had cost him the chance to race the finale, and along with that he didn’t earn any show up points.  That was enough to drop Berry from 8th to 11th in the track’s season championship standings.

That might not seem important, but the top ten in points at the end of the season receive a complimentary season pit pass from the speedway for the following season.  It’s a gesture made by the track to show appreciation for the team’s season-long support and also an enticement for them to return the following season.

Berry’s decision came so late that the team missed the combined hot lap/group time trial session.  As a result, he would line up last (18th) for the 25-lap main event in The Tire Mart Tire Pros of Harrisburg, Juniata Veterinary Clinic, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, SRI Performance / Stock Car Steel & Aluminum, VP Racing Fuels, JDS Racing, Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, Nathan Berry Beef Farm, Addicted2DirtPR.com, GO Lithium, Valvoline Pro-V Racing, Super Clean, Rocket Chassis, Austin Berry Racing No.86.

The entire Austin Berry Racing team hoped that just showing up would be sufficient to move them into the top ten in points since they were underpowered racing the limited motor against the super late models.

Surprisingly, Berry was able to make the most of the power he had on the slick racing surface, which acted as a bit of an equalizer.  He methodically chipped away, moving up to 15th by lap four.  He reached 11th with ten laps remaining and broke into the top ten on lap twenty one.  He held on to that spot to log a 10th place finish he wasn’t sure was possible.

We had no expectations for tonight.  It was such a spur of the moment decision solely aimed at earning enough points to put us back in the top ten, which we accomplished.  That gets us one season pit pass for 2024.  That may not seem like much, but for a team like ours that races on a tight budget…and given we have two motors to repair…every dollar counts.  We spent very little to race tonight and came out on the positive end of our decision.”, Berry said.

UP NEXT

Berry’s current plans for the upcoming weekend include two limited late model races.  He’ll start with Hagerstown Speedway’s Small Car Nationals on Saturday, September 16th, then will head north to Selinsgrove Speedway for their Sunday night race.

Stay tuned to Austin’s social media outlets and Addicted2DirtPR.com/Events for schedule updates and announcements.

Hart’s Stellar Year Continues With Emotional Win and Track Championship

Hagerstown’s Small Car Nationals Up Next

Port Royal, PA – September 12, 2023

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Photo Credit:  WRT Speedwerx / Brian Rhoad

Devin Hart said two things coming into the 2023 season.

First, his main goal was to win the Butch Renninger Memorial, a race held annually at Port Royal Speedway in honor of his grandfather.  A win in that personally important race has eluded him in his first nine years in a limited late model.

Second, he had no plans to race for points.  Instead, he would race where it made sense for his team and they would take a shot at some of the bigger races when they could.

You might think we’re about to tell you he accomplished his goals.  Well, you’re right.  He did.  But in doing so, he managed to win a points championship too.

FINALLY!

Hart has raced a limited late model since 2014 and he has won a lot of races at Port Royal Speedway during the years since he started, but in nine attempts to win the Butch Renninger Memorial he had not been able to be the first one to the checkered flag.

He certainly had been close though.  As a matter of fact, his stats are astoundingly good in the race.  In his first nine attempts at the Renninger Memorial Hart had finished on the podium five times and in the top five a total of seven times.

He just had not won it yet.  Hart didn’t think it was possible to want to win it more than he did but the desire grew deeper every time he came up just short.

With 31 cars on hand, there were plenty of good teams who were there with the same goal.  Hart made it clear in his heat race he was ready to give it his best shot again.  He drove from 4th to the lead on the opening lap and never looked back, taking the win by 3.2 seconds in his Lucky Buck, Hungry Run Wine Cellars, FK Rod Ends, JDS Racing, Penske Racing Shocks, Barron’s Racing Engines, Centre Boot Company, Gridiron Pizza & Gridiron Pub, Harling’s Hoagies, Brown’s Automotive, Rocket Chassis XR1 No.33k.

Hart started 3rd in the 25-lap feature event and jumped into 2nd on the opening lap.  For the next 18 trips around the Juniata County Fairgrounds half-mile oval, he pursued leader Spike Moore, trying to find a way to the top spot.  With nine laps remaining he pulled alongside Moore and the race was on in lapped traffic.

On lap twenty he made the pass by driving under Moore into turn three to take command of the race.  Only five laps, 2.5 miles, remained between Hart and the goal that mattered more to him than anything in racing.  While he tried to hit his marks and keep Moore at bay, his entire family held their collective breath.

With four laps remaining, the caution lights flashed on and forced Hart to deal with a restart.

Hart survived the restart and drove a smooth final three laps.

Finally, it happened.  Hart crossed the line first, with a 1.282 second advantage, to win his grandfather’s race.

I can’t believe this just happened.”, an emotional Hart said as he was congratulated by cousin Trent Brenneman in victory lane.  Brenneman, who is also family to the late Butch Renninger, had also come up short on winning the race over the years and shared in Hart’s desire to someday win it.

I can’t believe we just won this thing.  Every year everyone tells Trent and me it’s just another race but it’s not.  You can’t come in here with that mentality.  I’ve tried it and it doesn’t work.“, Hart explained to Port Royal Speedway announcer Brad Strawser.

My whole family is here every year making this race happen.  This is the 20th year now remembering my pap.  Everybody knows what a great guy he was around these fairgrounds.  I have to thank everyone on my crew, my family who always supports me, and of course my wife who lets me do this every week.

THE UNPLANNED CHAMPIONSHIP

As Hart had stated in March of this year, he had no plans to race for points.  He had been there and done that before.  He won the track championship at both Port Royal Speedway and Selinsgrove Speedway in 2021.  This year he was thinking more about winning at tracks he had not won at before and hopefully winning a couple of the bigger events he had not won before.

By April 7th this year, Hart already had wins at Winchester (VA), Port Royal (PA) and Bedford (PA).  He ventured to Hagerstown (MD) on April 8th and qualified up front before the show rained out.

The way the schedule worked out, Hart’s option on April 15th was Hagerstown.  He finished 3rd that night.  On May 6th he returned to Hagerstown because they were running the makeup feature from April 8th that he had already qualified for, plus a full show.  That night he collected a win and a runner up finish.

The season reached mid-June and Hart had already raced six times at Hagerstown, versus two at Port Royal, plus a few other one-off races.  It was all a result of rain outs and scheduling options, but the bottom line was that Hart was now in command of the point standings at Hagerstown.

He was also on top at Port Royal, so Hart figured he would pick the races he wanted to run, where ever they were, and things would shake out on their own.

One of the races Hart wanted to win in July was a Steel Block Bandits race, which was…where else…Hagerstown.  He gave it a shot and finished 2nd in that race.

Ultimately, Hart rolled into Hagerstown Speedway on September 1st for their final points races of the season looking to clinch the championship that he never intended to pursue.

He didn’t back into the title either.  That night he drove from 4th to 1st to win his heat, then led every lap of the feature to clinch the title with his third win there this season.  Hart’s worst finish in eleven races at the Maryland facility coming into that night was 5th, and he had only been off the podium two times in those eleven races.  He had been astoundingly consistent.

We never set out to do this but the way things fell into place, when we reached mid-summer, I figured why not try to win one here.  It was something I had not done before, so I’m pretty proud of that, especially when we were able to clinch it with a win and run so consistently here all year.”, Hart shared.

Hart and the KHK Motorsports team will be at Hagerstown Speedway Saturday, September 15th for the Late Model Sportsman portion of the Small Car Nationals.

Trever Feathers Scores Convincing Victory at Port Royal

Limited Late Model Racing Planned This Weekend

Port Royal, PA – September 12, 2023

Since debuting his Team Zero Bloomquist by Shane McDowell ride in early July, Trever Feathers had accumulated an average finish of 4.8 at Port Royal Speedway over a span of five main events.

That’s quite an improvement over his average finish of 14th in his first six races of the season at ‘The Speed Palace’, which were in a different chassis brand.

Feathers had nabbed one victory back in early August and as he headed to Port Royal for the final super late model race of the season on September 2nd, his sights were set solely on getting another one.

QUICK RESULTS

DATE:  September 8, 2023

  • Event:  Final Points Race
  • Track:  Port Royal Speedway
  • City, State:   Port Royal, PA
  • Quick Stats:  18 cars, Qualifying 3rd, A-main 1st (4)

BEATING THE WEATHER

Threatening weather combined with a rare Friday night race at Port Royal Speedway as part of the Night Before the 50 program left the Central Pennsylvania oval with a lower than usual car count in the super late model pit area.  That said, the phrase quality over quantity came to mind as the field contained the usual tough competitors such as Eckert, Yoder, Rine, and Stuhler.

The weather also played a role in the format for the night.  Teams were presented with an option to time trial and race a feature, skipping the usual heat races.  The plan would give teams a much better chance of completing their feature and earning a paycheck, rather than drag the program out and risk getting rained out.  The plan was adopted and set into motion.

Feathers got his night off on the right foot by ripping around the big fairgrounds half-mile in 19.024 seconds, good enough for 3rd quickest in his McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, Larry Royston’s Septic Services, Martins Pumping Service, Feathers & Sons Roofing, North River Farm, Leggett Engine Research, Hot Rod Septic Treatment, Team Zero Race Cars, Shane McDowell Racing, Coffelt Graphics, Larry Royston Properties, Larry Royston Equipment, Fox Racing Shox, Bo Feathers Racing, Clem’s Garage, No.20.

IN CONVINCING FASHION

The format called for a 6-car inversion for the feature, so Feathers took his spot outside row two for the 25-lap main event.  From the drop of the green, he assumed the runner-up spot behind leader Drake Troutman.  That pursuit continued to the halfway point of the race, with Feathers alongside Troutman’s No.7 several times but unable to lead at the line.

The caution appeared for a lapped car that spun in turn four right in front of the side by side Troutman/Feathers battle.  Both drivers were able to avoid the spinning car but then under caution, Troutman’s No.7 rolled to a stop on the high side of turn three with a mechanical issue.

With a few light, intermittent sprinkles floating down from the sky, the race resumed.  Feathers was in command and he would not be challenged.  He drove away from the field to a dominating win by 4.123 seconds over Dylan Yoder who was followed across the line by Rick Eckert, Jeff Rine and Hayes Mattern.

This car has been unbelievable.  The information we are getting from Shane McDowell and Bryan Conrad, Chris Ferguson’s dad, has been huge.  It’s so much fun to drive.“, Feathers said.

I wanted to slide him (Drake Troutman) into three but he was carrying so much speed I figured that wouldn’t work, so I just kept the pressure on him hoping he would slip up.  I hate that for him that he broke.  He’s a really good kid.  It’s fun racing with him.  It’s hard to believe he’s only 18 years old.  He races us clean and we race him with respect too.” Feathers shared when asked about his door to door racing with the young Troutman.

Feathers, a third generation racer, was joined in victory lane by his father and grandfather, Bo and Wayne Feathers.  Both have solid racing resumes of their own.

Thank you to Shane and Sarah McDowell, Bryan Conrad, my uncle Jimmy, my granddad, Larry and Lisa Royston, my mom and dad, all my guys who work so hard all week long.  I also want to thank Rick Leggett and John Coffelt for making us look good.

Last but not least, I want to give a huge thank you to Barnes Custom Painting in the Winchester, VA area.  They helped us immensely with our tire bill this week and we greatly appreciate that.  It takes everyone who helps us for us to do what we do.  We don’t take any of our partners for granted.

MOVING ON UP

The win moved Feathers into 2nd in the Championship Point Standings to finish the season behind the 2023 Champion, Eckert.

It was a big night for us…to end the season that way with a win and move into second in the final points.  Both pay pretty well, so that definitely helps us out financially.  We appreciate what Port Royal (Speedway) does for teams.“, Feathers commented.

UP NEXT

Tuesday night, September 12th, Feathers will appear live on The NEW Turn 5 Turn Around‘s Facebook show at 6:30pm EST when the show visit the Feathers Racing’s shop as part of their series of race shop visits.  You will hear about the team’s recent speed, upcoming plans and more!

When the weekend comes, as he did a few times in recent years, Feathers will strap into Brad Omps Limited Late Model this weekend at Winchester Speedway in Virginia on Friday night.  The pair might travel to Hagerstown Speedway in Maryland on Saturday night for the Small Car Nationals but a firm decision has not been made yet.

Stay tuned to Trever’s social media outlets listed below or check Addicted2DirtPR.com/Events to find his latest schedule at any time.
