Halligan Makes Big Gains at Williams Grove

Mid-Week Battle with Outlaws on Home Turf is Next

Mechanicsburg, PA – July 20, 2022

Jeff Halligan took advantage of the World of Outlaw tune-up show at Williams Grove Friday night.  It provided a chance to improve the Risser Motorsports No.45 at a place they have struggled this season, and it was an opportunity to compete under the time trial format that will be employed when the traveling series comes to town.

July 15:  Williams Grove Speedway / Mechanicsburg, PA

     [21 cars, Qualifying 2nd, Heat 1st (1), Dash 1st (1), A-main 7th (1)]

Only 21 teams signed in at ‘The Grove’ Friday night but from the very start of the evening, it was pretty clear the Risser Motorsports / TheTreeCenter.com / Victory Auto of Lewistown / EMM Sales & Service / Jake’s Golf Carts / Pine Hill Trailers / Keystone Ag SprayingNo.45 was going to be a factor.

Halligan turned the quickest lap in hot laps, then backed it up with the second best lap during qualifying.  His 17.305 was second only to Lance Dewease’s 17.233.

He didn’t stop there.  Starting on the pole of heat race number two, the Ephrata (PA) driver rode the cushion for a convincing heat win, ripping off the eight laps in just over two and a half minutes (2:35.379).

The Outlaw format also includes a 6-lap Dash for the top qualifiers.  Halligan won again in convincing fashion, besting Devon Borden by 1.360 seconds.

The 25-lap A-main was the only part of the night that didn’t go Halligan’s way.  It was a solid effort, but not quite what he and the team had in mind.  Jeff held the 2nd spot behind Dewease in the early going, but then slipped to 4th by mid-race.

The trend continued and Halligan found himself in 7th by lap fifteen.  He managed to settle in there and hold the spot to the checkered flag.

We had a great night. We had really good speed early and learned a lot.  It was a big step from where we were earlier this season here (at Williams Grove).  I’m looking forward to cleaning up my driving and making the right feature adjustments for this place.“, Halligan shared.

Up Next

The team’s planned trip to Lincoln Speedway last Saturday night was washed out by Mother Nature, so next up will be a date with the World of Outlaws on Wednesday, July 20th.  The battle is one of those key dates Halligan and Risser Motorsports have been targeting on their schedule, and it will take place on Jeff’s home turf, Port Royal Speedway.

Keen Shows Speed Early at Williams Grove, Comes Up Short Late

Mechanicsburg, PA – July 17, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  Jeremy Zarfos Photography

Kyle Keen returned to Williams Grove Speedway Friday night July 15th in the Fine Line Auto Body / Keen Parts / Doubling Gap Ranch / Shetron Auction & Equipment, LLC. / Wicked Dog Grille / Heishman Racing Fuels / Wicked Cushion / DL Lehman Construction, LLC. / GearHead Coffee / Jeremy Zarfos Photography / Coyle’s Lawn Maintenance / One Nine DesignKyle Keen Motorsports No.17k.

He and his team were looking to put a full night together and finally earn a finish at ‘The Grove’ that reflected how good they have been there this year.  Their previous races at the legendary Mechanicsburg (PA) half-mile had started very strong but ended with Keen pit-side before the checkered flag fell.

July 9:  Selinsgrove Speedway / Selinsgrove, PA

     [18 cars, Heat 8th (3), A-main 16th (15)]

Keen and his team were also ready to put last weekend’s frustrating night at Selinsgrove Speedway behind them.  Their night with the URC for the 360 National Open started with hot lap times near the top of the charts and a second row starting spot for their heat race.  Unfortunately a minor issue caused the motor to stumble on the start of the heat race and the night went downhill from there, ending with a 16th place finish.

July 16:  Williams Grove Speedway / Mechanicsburg, PA

     [27 cars, Heat 2nd (2), A-main 15th (5)]

The line-up of the heat event will be determined by drivers season average money (lowest to Highest). A driver who misses a race at Williams Grove and competes in another 410/360/358 sprint car race, upon his/her return will be lined up at the rear of the heat race for 1 week. The feature will be lined up straight up from heat race finishes.

Three heat races were on the card for the 27 teams signed in.  Per Williams Grove rules, the heat lineups were set by the drivers’ season average money (lowest to highest).  The top six finishers from each would transfer directly to the feature event, and the lineup for the 20-lap finale would be straight up from the heat race finishes.

Kyle Keen started outside the front row for heat number two.  The 8-lap qualifier provided an intense battle between Keen and the No.66 of veteran Doug Hammaker.  Keen fought off the challenge and got a well-earned runner-up finish in the heat, not only putting himself in the 5th starting spot for the A-main, but gaining some valuable seat time and confidence in the process.

From his starting spot inside the third row in the feature, he was unable to capitalize on the opportunity near the front of the pack.  Keen’s car just wasn’t in the ‘mood’ he needed it to be and he began to slide backwards through the running order soon after the green flag waived on the event.  He fought the good fight but only came away with a 15th place finish to show for it.

We just weren’t any good at the end of the night when we needed to be.“, a somewhat frustrated Keen said.

“We were decent in the heat race but I missed the setup big time in the feature.  It wasn’t the finish we wanted of course, but we raced all 20 laps and put it in the trailer in one piece, so I guess it’s one step closer to the kind of night we know we’re capable of.  Next time hopefully we can put the last piece of the puzzle in place.

It is Keen’s first year in a 358 sprint car and it was only his fourth trip to Williams Grove, so there is still plenty of notes to be made and experience to be gained.

This is a very humbling sport, but I think for being our first year in a 358 we are ahead of the curve.  We’re having a lot of fun too.  I just have to keep improving as a driver every week and understanding track states and conditions.“, Keen commented.

Williams Grove has done an incredible job with the 358’s this year and the numbers show.  I hope we can get some more races there next year, because it’s a badass racetrack!

Zach Newlin’s Williams Grove Return Ends Early

Mechanicsburg, PA – July 16, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  Jeremy Zarfos Photography

Zach Newlin returned to the seat of the Mansberger Motorsports No.21m Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway.  It was their first race since May 20th after missing a couple shows due to non-racing related circumstances.  They were back and looking to improve on the season-best 7th place finish they recorded that night.

July 15:  Williams Grove Speedway / Mechanicsburg, PA

      [27 cars, Heat 4th (7), A-main 22nd (10)]

Three heat races were on the card for the 27 teams signed in.  The lineups were set by a pill draw and the top six finishers from each would transfer directly to the feature event, with the top four participating in a redraw to claim one of the top-12 starting spots in the 20-lap finale.

Newlin started deep in the field for the first heat race of the night.  From his 7th starting spot, he steadily worked his way toward the front and managed to snag the final redraw spot on lap six.  He held on to the spot to record a 4th place finish.

The redraw turned up a number ten for the Millerstown (PA) wheelman, putting him outside row five to start the 20-lap A-main.  The opening lap didn’t go Newlin’s way and he slipped back to 13th by the time the first circuit was complete.

Newlin quickly found his groove and drove his way to the 10th position by the completion of lap three.  A tight battle among several cars in the middle of the pack continued, and he found himself just outside the top ten looking in for a large portion of the race.

Zach Daddy was searching for a way to work himself back into the top ten when his night ended abruptly on lap 17.  Newlin was officially credited with a 22nd place finish.

We were too tight and then I had a really bad vibration develop as the race went on.  That’s what put us out of the race.  The car was better in the heat race.  We just didn’t make the right adjustments for the feature.“, Newlin explained.

Up Next

The next outing for Newlin in the Mansberger Motorsports 358 sprint car will be Friday, July 29th at Williams Grove Speedway.

Zach’s next 410 sprint car race in the BK Motorsports No.77 is currently planned for Saturday, July 30th at Port Royal Speedway.

Henderson and Sandvig Motorsports Experience Heartbreak at Knoxville Raceway

Knoxville, IA – July 15, 2022

by Justin Snyder, Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  Spot-Photos.com

Justin Henderson scored a disappointing 23rd-place finish at Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night after a mechanical issue ended what appeared to be  a promising night behind the wheel of the Mike Sandvig Motorsports No 7 410 Sprint Car.

“Luckily I saved the car from getting into the wall, but overall, a tough night for our team,” said Henderson. “Sometimes I feel like we’d have no luck at all if not for bad luck. So overall it’s not much to write about.”

Henderson began the evening by timing in 5th quickest out of 32 cars in attendance with a fastest lap of 15.837 seconds during qualifying. He then advanced one position in a heat race to finish fourth and secured a spot in the night’s feature event.

“Qualifying well makes  everything easier and it seems we turned the corner there,” said Henderson. “We were not great in the heat race and just managed to hold on to get her in the show, so we’re still working on that part of things.”

Following a fortunate re-draw, Henderson lined up from the 5th starting position for the feature. However, his night practically ended before it ever started when he came to a stop against the outside guardrail on lap two with a broken tie-rod bolt. As a result, he was  credited with finishing in the 23rd position.

“We didn’t really start too well, so there’s not much we can take from that experience,” he said. “I’d have liked to maybe learn a few things from the changes we made, but that’s the way things go sometimes.”

While the finish was frustrating, Henderson was able to find encouragement in the early speed the car had on track.

“We turned the corner a little bit and we’re kind of trial and error until we get it right,” he said. “I feel like we’re getting back on track as a team, and we had some speed. So, we’ll just take the positives we can from it and just keep moving forward.”

Next up for the duo will be another Saturday of racing at Knoxville Raceway, followed by a return to Huset’s Speedway on Sunday.

Henderson currently sits on top of the point standings at Huset’s, where he holds a 12-point advantage in search of his second consecutive track championship at the Brandon, S.D Speedway.

“We’re leading the points at Huset’s and It’s always a good time when you enter as the points leader, ” said Henderson. “The crazy thing is that I don’t know that we have really scratched the surface in how good we are as a team this season yet.

“We’re really grinding away at this deal and we’re working hard to be ready come Nationals time. I feel like the best is yet to come for this team and I’m looking forward to clicking off a few wins hopefully in the near future.”

Reinhardt Scores Two Top Tens on New York All Star Swing

Missouri’s Lake Ozark Speedway Up Next

Port Royal, PA – July 14, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  Zack Anthony Photography

Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team had enjoyed a two and a half week break from the grind on the road following the completion of the first 31 points races of the All Star Circuit of Champions season, which wrapped up with the grueling 10-day Ohio Speedweek in mid-June.

The break was a busy one, regrouping, restocking, making repairs and preparing for the final 26-race homestretch of the season.

July 6:  Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup, Lernerville Speedway / Sarver, PA

      [36 cars, Qualifying 7th Group C, Heat 5th (7), A-main 21st (19)]

The prestigious Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup at Lernerville Speedway in western Pennsylvania, offering a $25,000 payday to the winner, was the scene for the kickoff of the second half of the Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions schedule.

Reinhardt’s night got off to a tough start when he clocked in at 7th quickest in Group C.  Following qualifying for the 36 cars on hand, four 8-lap heats were slated, with the top five finishers from each advancing to the A-main.

The Neptune City, NJ native was able to start digging out of the early hole by moving forward from his 7th starting spot in the heat to finish 5th and capture the final transfer position.

Reinhardt wasn’t able to complete the recovery in the 30-lap feature event.  After starting 19th, on lap six he suffered a right rear flat on his Capitol Renegade / Capitol Custom Coaches & Trailers / Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants / J&J Auto Racing No.91.  He was one of three drivers who experienced the same fate when debris on the speedway cut multiple tires.

Reinhardt rejoined the field but was unable to move forward and ultimately recorded a 21st place finish.

July 8:  Ransomville Speedway / Ransomville, NY

      [20 cars, Qualifying 13th, Heat 5th (5), A-main 7th (13)]

Teams used a day off to make the four hour trek north to Ransomville Speedway in NY, north of Buffalo.  Twenty teams signed in to compete at the half-mile facility situated just twenty minutes from Niagara Falls.

Kyle Reinhardt was aiming to get his team’s night off to a stronger start.  A late slot in the qualifying order resulted in the 13th quickest lap overall and a 5th place starting spot in the first of three 8-lap heat races.

Reinhardt held his ground but wasn’t able to advance in the heat race.  His 5th place finish translated to a starting spot inside row seven in the 30-lap A-main.  During the first dozen laps of the feature, once again he was unable to push forward in the running order.

Following a lap twelve caution, the car and the surface came to Reinhardt.  On the restart he started his steady march forward, cracking the top ten at the halfway point.  From there on, Reinhardt cleared a competitor every few laps, reaching 7th on the final lap to claim his eighth top ten of the season.

We struggled with some brake issues at Lernerville Wednesday and again early tonight, but we finally resolved the problem and got better for the feature.  We weren’t great tonight, but we never quit and were able to make a decent night out of it.”, Reinhardt commented.

July 9:  Stateline Speedway / Busti, NY

      [21 cars, Qualifying 15th, Heat 4th (5), A-main 10th (13)]

The final night of the brief NY swing for the All Stars brought 21 teams to the Pennsylvania border to race at the 1/3-mile Stateline Speedway in Busti, NY.  It was a different night and a different track, but it was a similar outcome for the Capitol Renegade No.91 team.

Reinhardt recorded the 15th best lap overall in qualifying, then advanced one spot to finish 4th in his heat race.  He went on to convert his 13th starting spot in the 30-lap main event to a 10th place finish, his second top-10 in as many days.

We didn’t qualify well this weekend and that obviously is a big part of this deal.  We need to get better early in the night and give ourselves a chance to make dashes.  We will keep digging.“, Reinhardt said with both frustration and determination apparent in his voice.

I want to thank Wayne and Capitol Renegade for everything they do for us, and of course Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants, J&J Auto Racing, Henry’s Wrecker, and everyone who supports us.  It sounds cliche but we truly couldn’t do this without all of them.  We really appreciate everything they do to help us.

Up Next

Kyle and the Capitol Renegade team will be off this weekend, then will return to action on July 22nd and 23rd with the All Stars for a 2-day show at Lake Ozark Speedway in Eldon, Missouri.

Jeff Halligan Back in Victory Lane for Second Time in 2022

Port Royal, PA – July 12, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  Brian Rhoad/WRT Speedwerx

Jeff Halligan made the most of his final chance to dial in the Risser Motorsports / TheTreeCenter.com / Victory Auto of Lewistown / EMM Sales & Service / Jake’s Golf Carts / Pine Hill Trailers / Keystone Ag SprayingNo.45 at Port Royal Speedway prior to the upcoming World of Outlaws event.

Saturday night the Ephrata, PA wheelman powered to a convincing heat race win by five seconds over the second place car, then went on to come from the 6th starting spot in the A-main to grab the lead on a late restart and take the victory by 1.6 seconds over Mike Wagner.

July 9:  Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     [24 cars, Heat 1st (1), A-main 1st (6)]

All cars would qualify from the three 8-lap heat races, but only the top three finishers would be handicapped to start the feature event.  Halligan drew the pole for the first heat, and it was never a contest.  He drove away from the start and pulled away to a straightaway lead during the nonstop event.

The handicapping system, based on each driver’s points average in the most recent four races, placed Halligan outside row three for the night’s finale.  In the early going of the 25-lap feature, it appeared his No.45 might not be quite as good as it had been earlier in the night.

Halligan initially settled into the 5th position and had to watch the battle in front of him for the top spots.  By lap six he found his rhythm and moved into the 4th spot, still watching from the outside at the war being waged at the front among Derek Hauk, Dylan Cisney, and Ryan Timms.

As the race entered the final ten laps, Halligan cleared a lapped car, got clean air on his nose and set his sights on the top trio.  With eight laps remaining, the caution lights flashed on for Tyler Walton and at the same time, Ryan Timms blew a right rear tire.

The field came to the green for the restart with Cisney leading Hauck, Halligan, Logan Wagner and Mike Wagner.  Things got tight off turn two and down the backstretch as Halligan put a nose into 2nd using the low side, while Logan Wagner charged up the middle with Hauck up high.

Wagner and Hauck made contact, sending both spinning and ending the night for both drivers.  The second attempt to restart with eight laps remaining came to the green with Cisney leading Halligan and Mike Wagner.  Jeff had his sights set on the top spot and momentarily slid in front of the No.5 in turn four, but Cisney turned back under the No.45 and reclaimed the lead.  Mike Wagner took advantage of the moment and stole 2nd away from Halligan entering turn one.

Halligan now sat several car lengths back in 3rd and the laps were winding down when misfortune struck for Cisney.  A blown left rear tire sent the leader hard into the third turn fence, ending his night.

Jeff Halligan made the most of the second chance.  On the ensuing restart, Wagner went low into turn one while Halligan ripped the top side and built momentum.  As the pair reached turn three, Jeff  dove low under Wagner’s No.55 and came off turn four with the lead.  He never relinquished the lead and came home with his second victory of the season.

The win checked off a goal Halligan has had since he first strapped into a 410 sprint car three years ago:  win multiple races in a season.  As a result of the parity and high level of competition in Central Pennsylvania, it is a goal that is not easily attained.

It was definitely a good night for us.  I’m pretty happy.  We’ve still got work to do here, but we’re in good shape.“, a smiling Halligan commented.

We need to work on getting better at other places.  We’ve struggled most nights at Williams Grove this year, so we want to get some laps in there.  We had good runs at Lincoln during Speedweek, so we’ve made progress there, but we still have things to figure out to be consistently good there.  We need to keep putting in the work if we’re going to take our deal to the next level and be able to compete with the big dogs.

Up Next

With Port Royal hosting motorcycle racing this weekend, it’s an ideal weekend for the team to work on improvements elsewhere.  Halligan and the Risser Motorsports team will venture to Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night July 15th and Lincoln Speedway the following night.

The team had two successful outings at the Pigeon Hills oval during PA Speedweek.  Halligan will return with a lot of momentum, looking for his second career 410 sprint car win at the track.  His first came in his rookie 410 season back in 2019, almost exactly three years ago to the date this weekend.

Wednesday night July 20th Halligan and team will return to ‘The Speed Palace’ to face the World of Outlaws.

Kyle Keen Introduces Longtime NASCAR Sponsor Keen Parts to Sprint Car Racing

Carlisle, PA – July 8, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Keen Parts is no stranger to auto racing.  The Ohio-based business has a long history of partnerships with  racers at every level, from NASCAR to drag-racing television stars on Street Outlaws: New Orleans.

Owners Tom and TJ Keen enjoy racing so much, they sponsor several teams and have done so for many years, often through their alternate business name, CorvetteParts.net.  They have successfully partnered with familiar names in NASCAR and ARCA racing like Earnhardt, DiBenedetto, Lajoie, Boat, Tiff and Mullins.  In 2022, you can find Keen Parts and CorvetteParts.net both represented on the NASCAR Xfinity Series car of Ryan Ellis.

Keen Parts is a leading manufacturer and retailer of Corvette parts and accessories.  CorvetteParts.net is their website alter-ego.  With over 26,000 Corvette parts and accessories, they have what you need.  They stock parts available for Corvettes from 1953 to the present.

Keen Parts is not an anonymous Corvette website. Their retail shop and warehouses are located in Cleves, Ohio just north of Cincinnati and they have over thirty years of happy customers all over the world.

A sprint car racing partnership is the latest venture for the husband and wife duo, Tom and TJ Keen.  It all started through a chance meeting with sprint car driver Kyle Keen in early 2022.

“At the time I was working for a marketing company in the evenings. I received a phone call on my lunch break and Tom Keen was on the other line. I immediately knew who he was from watching NASCAR, and from that point forward we really hit it off, and never looked back. It was fun to share the same last name, and I joked with Tom, calling him my long lost uncle. We really try to keep it fun.”, Kyle Keen shared.

The pair, who are not related, found immediate common ground in their shared last name, and the relationship went from there.  By April a partnership had formed and the Keen Parts logo was on the Kyle Keen Motorsports No.17k sprint car.

Tom has been an important mentor for me and someone who cares about my racing career. He’s always getting me on the phone with new people and making new connections. Aside from racing, he coaches me up on ways of handling business situations, because at my current employment, dealing with employee issues is a daily part of my job. Tom has been extremely insightful in business and in life. I truly enjoy our conversations we have outside of the racing realm. TJ Keen is also right there helping promote me on social media and being interactive in so many different ways. I can’t express my gratitude to both of them enough for allowing me to be a part of their racing program, it’s a true honor and a privilege.“, Kyle added.

Tom and TJ are also familiar with the Central Pennsylvania area.  They come to the Carlisle Fairgrounds twice each year for shows like ‘Corvettes at Carlisle’, which are key events for their business, Keen Parts.

I’m looking forward to continuing to build this fun relationship with Tom and TJ.  I can’t thank them enough for supporting my dream and my passion of racing sprint cars.  They are incredible people and obviously big race fans, so I’m looking forward to what the future holds with them., Kyle commented.

Henderson and Sandvig Searching for Speed and Consistency at Knoxville Raceway

Knoxville, IA – July 7, 2022

by Justin Snyder, Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  Knoxville Raceway

Justin Henderson wheeled the Mike Sandvig Motorsports No. 7 410 Sprint Car to a 12th-place finish Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway.

After multiple weekends filled with up and down results for the duo behind the wheel of a new fresh Maxim Chassis, the consistent night was a nice change of pace and has the team feeling positive going forward.

“We pulled out this Maxim when the Outlaws came to Huset’s and it just seems we have been chasing the car and speed,” said Henderson. “We might be turning the corner with things here and I’m hopeful we’re on the right track.”

Henderson began the evening by timing in 18th quickest in qualifying with a fastest lap of 16.691 seconds. He then advanced one position in a heat race to pick up the victory and secure a spot in the night’s $6,000-to-win feature event.

“The car was really good in the heat race and it felt as comfortable as it has since we pulled it out,” he said. “It’s nice to win a heat race, but we need to time better to really benefit from it.”

Lining up from the 13th starting position for the feature, Henderson settled just inside of the top 15 for the first half of the event. Late in the A-main he was able to move forward into the 12th position, but with the feature going non-stop and the field getting spread out, he wasn’t able to gain any more ground and settled for 12th at the checkered flag.

The top 15 finish was the duo’s 15th of the season in 23 starts. More importantly, it was a welcome sight following what has been a grind to find the perfect mixture of comfort and speed since rolling out a brand new Maxim Chassis a few weeks back.

“Mike and the guys are working really hard to get this thing rolling good and I know we’ve got a car and team capable of winning and running up front,” he said. “I’ve been around this sport for a while and I know as much as anyone that sometimes it just takes time. It could be the smallest thing keeping us from getting everything out of the car that we can and I’m confident in Maxim’s product and our team that we’ll get there very soon.”

Next up for the duo will be another Saturday of racing at Knoxville Raceway this weekend.

With some of the bigger  events on the schedule approaching quickly, Henderson is hopeful the team can turn a corner and get back to their consistency and winning ways.

“We’d like to maybe be doing some racing at other tracks with the Outlaws, but Knoxville holds the most importance to us right now as we are focused on the Knoxville Nationals coming up soon,” said Henderson. “We got our good car back that we crashed a few weeks back and we’re close to getting this new one dialed in.

“In racing you can’t live off one car and one package, so while we know the old Maxim is good and fast, we’ve got to get this one right if we want to be a complete and successful program. So, I’m looking forward to getting back to Knoxville and getting ourselves ready to take a shot at a crown jewel in the Nationals later this season.”

Halligan’s PA Speedweek Full of the Unexpected

Port Royal, PA – July 7, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  Jeremy Zarfos Photography

Jeff Halligan’s approach to the 2022 season has been one of phases, each culminating with an event that is of key importance to the team.  The approach has similarities to high school.  Do your homework and study for weeks, then periodically you are tested.

Risser Motorsports and Halligan have passed their first two tests of the season with flying colors.  They netted a top-10 finish in the Keith Kauffman Classic and the Bob Weikert Memorial ended with Halligan on the podium.  Now it was time for the mid-term of Pennsylvania sprint car racing, PA Speedweek.

2022 Pennsylvania Speedweek Quick Results

6/24:  Williams Grove Speedway / 29 cars, Qualifying 21st, Heat 6th (7), A-main 16th (18)

6/25:  Lincoln Speedway / 47 cars, Qualifying 4th Flight A, Heat 1st (1), A-main 12th (5)

6/27:  Lincoln Speedway / 42 cars, Qualifying 4th Flight A, Heat 1st (1), A-main 6th (6)

6/28:  Grandview Speedway / 31 cars, Qualifying 21st, Heat 9th (6), B-main 1st (2), A-main 17th (21)

6/29:  Port Royal Speedway / 39 cars, Qualifying 9th Flight A, Heat 5th (5), A-main 12th (19)

7/2:  Port Royal Speedway / 33 cars, Qualifying 15th, Heat 4th (3), A-main 21st (15)

Halligan kicked off his Speedweek along with 28 other teams at Williams Grove Speedway for the first of the ten race series.  The Grove has been the scene of hot and cold nights for the Ephrata, PA resident this season.  Early season struggles and missed shows turned to a podium finish in recent weeks.  Night number one proved to be a more average outing, as Halligan recorded a 16th place finish in the main event.

The Risser Motorsports team and Halligan entered both the Saturday and Monday events at Lincoln Speedway.  The two nights were both successful outings and were nearly identical statistically.  On both nights, Halligan timed 4th quickest in Flight A, then went on to win his heat from the pole.  The only negative to the two nights was Saturday’s 5th place start that transformed into a 12th place finish.  Monday night Halligan redeemed himself by starting outside row three and bringing home a 6th place finish.

Halligan’s heat races at Lincoln were especially notable.  On Saturday, he kept the legendary 69k of Lance Dewease at bay through multiple restarts to capture the win.  On Monday, Jeff drove out to convincing lead of 2.3 seconds in just a few laps and survived a late restart to win easily.

Halligan’s apparent potential at Grandview Speedway never materialized at Tuesday night’s show.  Despite good speed in hot laps, a bobble during time trials and contact in traffic during his heat race turned a promising night into an uphill battle just to survive for a 17th place finish.

Wednesday night the Risser Motorsports team returned to their most familiar turf, Port Royal Speedway.  This is where Jeff Halligan and crew chief Kyle Defibaugh expected to make the biggest impact given the team’s recent success at the Juniata County Fairgrounds half-mile.

The competition is tight and the fields are deep during Speedweek.  Every decision and every move matters.  Halligan’s qualifying effort was just 0.003 seconds short of making his path for the rest of the night a lot easier.  Instead, he settled for an eventual 5th place finish in the second heat race, then worked hard to convert his tenth row starting spot into a 12th place finish in the A-main.

Although it was in their original plans, Halligan and the Risser Motorsports team opted to skip Friday night’s event at Williams Grove Speedway to focus on preparations for Saturday’s Greg Hodnett Classic at Port Royal Speedway, which offered a tidy sum of $10,000 to the victor.

Halligan took to the track on Saturday night as the 33rd and final car for time trials and registered a respectable 15th quickest time.  A 4th place finish in heat number three put him 15th on the grid for the 30-lap finale but Halligan was forced to exit the event when something sliced the main radiator line.  It brought an end to his 2022 PA Speedweek with a disappointing 21st place finish.

It wasn’t the week we envisioned, but we had a good week.  There were positives.  We made all six features, including both races at Lincoln, which was unexpected to be honest after we struggled and missed the shows there last year.”, Halligan shared.

“It was also a frustrating week.  We were really quick at Grandview, but I made a mistake in time trials that changed our whole night, and we were not as good at Port Royal as we should’ve been, so we certainly didn’t expect that either.  We weren’t bad though.  We were less than a tenth of a second from a front row starting spot on at least two nights.  We just expected a little more of ourselves.

We learned some things from Speedweek.  We will take that and keep working hard to move our program to the next level.  Hopefully we can rebound this week at Port (Royal).”

Up Next

The Risser Motorsports / TheTreeCenter.com / Victory Auto of Lewistown / EMM Sales & Service / Jake’s Golf Carts / Pine Hill Trailers / Keystone Ag Spraying, No.45 will be back at Port Royal Speedway this Saturday night, July 9th, for Kid’s Night.

There is a lot riding on a rebound this weekend for Halligan.  The next phase of his season is a short one and the test at the end of it is only two weeks away.  This Saturday is the final opportunity to prepare for the upcoming World of Outlaws event, which takes place on July 20th at ‘The Speed Palace’.

The pair of races took the team to Williams Grove Speedway and Port Royal Speedway where they would be on the card as part of the Pennsylvania Speedweek 410 sprint car series.  The outcome of both nights showed the 358 sprint car rookie is on the cusp of bigger things.  More experience will always be a plus, and that will come with time, but the biggest missing element right now is a little bit of luck.

June 24th:  Williams Grove Speedway / Mechanicsburg, PA

     [30 cars, Heat 1st (1), A-main 22nd (3)]

Thirty 358 sprint car teams signed in at ‘The Grove’ on Friday night, June 24th.  The field was split into three, 10-car heat races using a pill draw.  From each of the 8-lap qualifying races, the top six finishers would advance to the A-main, with the top four earning a spot in the redraw that would set the top twelve starting spots for the 20-lap finale.

Kyle Keen’s first bit of good fortune on the night came in the form of drawing the pole for the third heat race.  He was able to capitalize on the opportunity and capture the win, grabbing his ticket to the redraw in the process.

Keen had one more moment of good fortune when the redraw turned up the 3rd starting spot for the main event.  Unfortunately, that’s where his luck ran out for the night.  The race leader had a mechanical issue on the opening lap and slowed rapidly, leaving the Carlisle, PA resident no time to react.

Keen made contact with the right rear of the disabled car, lifting his front end skyward and bringing it back down hard on the track surface.  Sensing something was off, he took the car pit-side and retired from the event.  He was credited with a 22nd place finish.

We were strong to start the night.  The heat win was rejuvenating.  It was definitely a confidence builder.  I felt like we showed what we are capable of.  We had nice speed and a good pace.”, Keen said.

“When the leader broke in front of me on the first lap of the feature, I had nowhere to go and climbed his right rear.  When the car came back down, I thought something was broken.  I pulled into the pits, but everything was fine.  It’s been tough sledding at the Grove so far, but we will get through this.  We are finally getting racy.  I’m excited for the next race there already.

June 29th:  URC / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     [30 cars, Heat 6th (6), A-main 17th (16)]

The URC sprint cars joined the PA Speedweek 410 sprint car program at Port Royal Speedway for a midweek special at the Juniata County fairgrounds half-mile.  Taking advantage of an opportunity for seat time, Kyle Keen Motorsports joined the quality field of 30 cars.

The format in play for the event included three 10-lap heat races lined up by a pill draw, a B-main and a 25-lap A-main.  Each heat race would send the top six finishers directly to the main event, but only the top three would earn a spot in the redraw.

Keen started and finished 6th in an uneventful heat number one.  He may have missed the redraw, but the No.17k 358 sprint car was in the show right alongside the URC 360’s.

From his 16th starting spot in the night’s finale, Keen had to work hard for every position he gained.  Through the first twenty laps there was rarely a moment when he was not side by side with another competitor.

He was getting the job done though.  By lap eleven Keen had cracked the top ten.  Three laps later he had clawed his way into the 8th position.  The event was slowed numerous times by cautions, but he survived  the restarts and continued his quest.

A top five finish didn’t seem far-fetched given Keen’s steady climb, but inside the final few circuits, the motor began to stumble.  On the final restart with one lap remaining, it gave up and Keen drifted to the inside wall, out of fuel just a half mile short of a top-10 run in his first career URC start.  Instead, the rundown shows a disappointing 17th.

I’m frustrated with the way the amount of caution laps we ran were handled, but it is what it is.  We will move on to the next one.“, Keen commented.

“Our Hammaker 358 was running super strong against a very tough field of 360’s. I want to say thanks to my team for getting the car to the track while I was at work so we could race. I’m proud of the speed we have shown recently.  I had a fun time racing Port, certainly a badass, fast racetrack.”
