JJ Hickle Set to Debut with Sandvig Motorsports During 71st Annual Knoxville Opener

Knoxville, IA – April 18, 2024

Sandvig Motorsports is set to embark on the 2024 racing season with JJ Hickle behind the wheel of their 410 Sprint Car this weekend at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa.

If Mother Nature plays nicely, Hickle will take part in a test and tune session on Friday at ‘The Sprint Car Capital of the World’, before kicking off the season on Saturday as part of their 71st Annual Pella Motors/Kraig Ford Season Opener.

“I went and out my seat in the car and got my belts fitted with Mike’s car and there’s nothing really left but to go and do it,” said Hickle. “It seems like I’ve just been watching it rain and be cold here lately, so hopefully we can get 2024 started together and I couldn’t be any more excited!”

While this will be the first scheduled event of the season for the Sandvig No. 7, Hickle already has several races under his belt as he’s competed in 410 Sprint Car competition for Cook Motorsports and 360 Sprint Car competition for Winged Down Racing.

While he’s grateful for the opportunity to stay sharp and compete for victories, he’s anxiously looking forward to the opportunity to pilot the Sandvig Motorsports Sprint Car and start gelling as a team. Tentatively, the team plans to race in close to 50 events this season at various tracks with different series.

“It’s great to go do these one-off deals and get opportunities to drive fast race cars, but I’m really looking for a home,” said Hickle. “I think we can do that with Mike’s team and I’m excited to just get going, learn, and be in a situation where we can be consistent and grow together throughout the year.”

Along with Hickle being new to the program, several sponsors have committed in support of Sandvig Motorsports 2024 racing season. Renown Earth Works, HPP Hertz Precision Parts, GRP Motorsports, Heartland Kitchen Solutions, Rider Racing Engines, Kaiser Wheels, DeBerg Flooring, Eszlinger Electric LLC, A+ Power Washing and Boji Custom Metal Works, and Powder Coating will all be on the car. Hickle and Sandvig are grateful for all the support in chasing their season goals.

“Everybody knows Sprint Car racing isn’t a cheap sport and I’m appreciative of everyone who has come on board to make this deal happen,” Hickle said. “Mike has a bunch of supporters who have been with him for a while and I’m just looking forward to putting my best foot forward and representing them well on and off the track.”

With a team that has shown the ability to win over the years, with an eye toward the future, Hickle believes the pairing can lead to success. While he understands it might take time to get going, he believes he’s in a situation to succeed and compete for wins out of the gate.

“As a driver, all you can do is go out and make the best laps you can and see what happens,” said Hickle. “This deal takes work and I think both myself and Mike know if we work together toward the same goals, we can be fast and compete for wins. It might be a bit much to say we’re going to go out and win the first night out, but I think end of the night on Saturday we can have a good base of where we stand and hopefully, we’re running up front.”

Hartlaub Delivers Solid Performance at Lincoln Speedway, Struggles at BAPS

York Haven, PA – April 18, 2024

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Photo Credit:  Jeremy Zarfos / WRT Speedwerx

Despite closing out the 2023 season with two top-ten finishes in his six 410 sprint car starts, Kody Hartlaub didn’t enter the 2024 season with any high expectations for his first full season in the division.

There is a lot of learning to be done and experience to be gained, and he knows that.  He also knows he has the ability, the team, and the equipment to be competitive on the tough Central PA circuit, so while still being realistic that there will be good days and bad, he sets the bar high for himself to limit mistakes and shorten the learning curve.

That’s the kind of mentality you need behind the wheel if you’re going to succeed.

SOME DAYS YOU ARE THE WINDSHIELD

April opened with Lincoln Speedway pushing their Saturday show to Sunday to doge Mother Nature.  Hartlaub and his Ninety Five Motorsports team were in the house for their fifth start of the season at the Abbottstown, PA oval.

With the move to Sunday, the event was changed to a time-trial show but that didn’t phase Hartlaub.  He turned in the 4th quickest lap in the 31-car field.

Hartlaub started and finished 4th in his heat race, putting him on the outside of row three for the 30-lap A-main.  The East Berlin, PA resident was eyeing his first top ten of the season and possibly a top five if things went well.

Things didn’t unfold that way though and Hartlaub slipped back a few spots in the early going.  He held on to a top ten spot until the final lap, crossing the line 11th at the checkers.

“The car was pretty good.  I just got out-driven by guys who have more experience running the top like that on a daytime track.  Gained some experience today for next time.”, Hartlaub explained.

The end result clearly wasn’t what he was aiming for but overall it was a strong performance by the rookie against experienced quality competition.

SOME DAYS YOU ARE THE BUG

The following Sunday, April 14th, Hartlaub was back in action but this time the scene was BAPS Motor Speedway.  It was to be a two-race weekend for the team but Saturday’s event at Lincoln Speedway was cancelled due to the weather.

The format for the BAPS show used group, timed hot laps to set the heat lineups. Hartlaub found himself digging out of a hole from the beginning after qualifying 8th quickest in his group.  That put him 8th to take the green in his heat race and with only the top five transferring, he had a tall order on his hands.

Hartlaub did not transfer through the heat and was relegated to a 12th starting spot in the B-main, a 15-lap race with only the top four advancing to the main event.  He only managed a 9th-place finish, ending his day.

“Not going to sugar-coat that one.  We were terrible in time trials and it was tough to make up that lost ground with only one lane to race in during the heat.”, said Hartlaub of the uncharacteristic day.

UP NEXT

Kody will make his season debut at Williams Grove Speedway this Friday, April 19th to compete in the $8,000-to-win Tommy Hinnershitz Classic.

The following night he will be back at his home stomping grounds, Lincoln Speedway, to race the $20,000-t0-win 20th Annual Weldon Sterner Memorial.

Kyle Reinhardt Overcomes Qualifying Setback to Secure 14th Place Finish

York Haven, PA – April 18, 2024

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Photo Credit:  Jeremy Zarfos / WRT Speedwerx

Kyle Reinhardt rolled into BAPS Motor Speedway Sunday afternoon aiming to continue the trend he set there in 2023 when he notched six top-ten finishes, including one victory, in his first eight appearances of that season at the York Haven, PA oval.

He would have to contest with a quality field of 43 teams to accomplish that goal.

QUICK RESULTS

DATE:  April 14, 2024

  • Division:  410 Sprint Cars
  • Track:  BAPS Motor Speedway
  • City, State:   York Haven, PA
  • Stats:  43 cars, Group 4 Qualifying 7th, Heat 7th (7), B-main 2nd (8), A-main 14th (23)

RALLY TIME

Reinhardt’s night kicked off with group, timed hot laps.  His lap of 18.274 was only good enough for 7th best in the ten-car group.  The Capitol Custom Coaches & Trailers, Capitol Renegade, Coors Banquet Beer, E-Z-GO Golf Cars, Henry’s Wrecker Service No.91 wasn’t far off though.  He was only 0.103 seconds out of a top-five effort, which would have put him in a transfer spot to start his heat.

Instead, Reinhardt took the green from the 7th starting spot in his heat race.  He wasn’t able to climb into a top-five transfer spot and was relegated to the B-main for another shot at making the show.

Reinhardt began to turn his night around quickly in the B-main.  After starting 8th, he charged into the top five by lap two.  He continued to reel in the leaders, claiming 4th on lap three and 3rd on lap seven of the 15-lap last-chance qualifier.  The Neptune City, NJ native nearly wrestled 2nd away from Nash Ely but settled for a 3rd place finish and a starting spot in the A-main.

From his 23rd starting spot in the A-main, Reinhardt continued to rally, taking over the 13th spot at the midpoint of the race.

The forward progress came to a halt after Reinhardt suffered front wing damage as the result of contact.  He managed to hold on for a 14th-place finish, turning a potentially bad night into a positive one.

Reinhardt will return to BAPS Motor Speedway on April 28th looking to restart his string of top-ten finishes.

UP NEXT

Reinhardt is slated to compete in his first two-race weekend of the season this Friday and Saturday.

Friday night April 19th he will be in attendance at Williams Grove Speedway for the $8,000 to win Tommy Hinnershitz Classic.

The following night he will make the short tow from his race shop to Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown Speedway for the $20,000 to win Weldon Sterner Memorial.

Quick Study: Kyle Keen Makes Mark with First 410 Sprint Car A-Main

York Haven, PA – April 17, 2024

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Photo Credit:  Jeremy Zarfos / WRT Speedwerx

Kyle Keen has just begun his 410 sprint car career but if Sunday’s race at BAPS Motor Speedway is any indication, the learning curve may not be as long as you might expect for the Carlisle, Pennsylvania native.

QUICK RESULTS

DATE:  April 14, 2024

  • Division:  410 Sprint Cars
  • Track:  BAPS Motor Speedway
  • City, State:   York Haven, PA
  • Stats:  43 cars, Group 1 Qualifying 5th, Heat 5th (5), A-main 20th (17)

SEAT TIME

With a stout field of 43 sprint cars on hand on a summer-like April day in Pennsylvania, Kyle Keen needed to perform with little time to prepare.  The format used timed group hot laps to set heat race lineups, giving him only a few laps to put himself in a good position for the day.

He delivered.  Keen turned in a solid 5th-quickest lap in his 11-car qualifying group.

The job wasn’t done yet though.  From the 5th starting spot in the heat race, he would have to remain in the top five to make his way to his first career A-main.  Keen jumped into 4th at the start, then challenged for 3rd early in the ten-lap qualifier.  He slid back to 5th just past the midpoint but held on to that spot to transfer to the main event.

Keen used the 25-lap feature as valuable seat time.  He went the distance, officially finishing 20th and learning a lot in the process.

“Super proud of my team for the leaps and bounds we have made each time we have hit the track with the 410 this year. Tried some new stuff and it helped us for qualifying and the heat races, but we still have a lot to work on for the feature with both me and the car.”, Keen commented.

“I made a couple of mistakes in the heat race, otherwise we probably had a 3rd or 4th place car.  We struggled with the feature setup and I need to learn how to approach 410 features from a driving perspective as well.  I expected it would be a learning night and it was.  We are going to keep plugging away, making laps, and getting better every week.”

UP NEXT

Looking to make his second 410 sprint car A-main, Keen will sign in at Williams Grove Speedway Friday night April 19th for the Tommy Hinnershitz Memorial.  The following night he will return to Port Royal Speedway for more 410 seat time.

SEASON STATS

Feathers Starts Strong, Engine Woes Lead to 10th Place Finish at Potomac Speedway

Potomac, MD – April 17, 2024

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Photo Credit: Jason Walls / WRT Speedwerx

After winning at Hagerstown Speedway in his 2024 limited late model debut, Trever Feathers opted to compete at Potomac Speedway’s Steel Block Clash Danny Garrett Memorial Saturday night to take his shot at claiming the $3,999 top prize.

QUICK RESULTS

DATE:  April 13, 2024

  • Event:  Danny Garrett Memorial
  • Class:  Limited Late Model
  • Track:  Potomac Speedway
  • City, State:   Potomac, MD
  • Quick Stats:  26 cars, Heat 2nd (2), A-main 10th (5)

WHO NEEDS A BRAKE PEDAL?

Feathers made the two-and-a-half-hour haul from Winchester, Virginia to Potomac Speedway in Southern Maryland Saturday with his McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, George’s Used Cars, Martin’s Pumping, North River Farm, Feathers & Son’s Roofing, Leggett Engine Research, Coffelt Graphics, Shane McDowell Racing, Fox Racing Shox No.27.

It didn’t take him long to pick up where he left off the week before at Hagerstown.  He was quick out of the box, logging the 4th fastest qualifying lap in the 26-car field.

A solid second-place run in his heat race put Feathers in the redraw for the 49-lap A-main.  He pulled the five pill to take the inside row three starting spot.

In the early going, Feathers simply tried to ‘hold serve’, keeping his nose clean, saving his tires, and staying away from some of the aggressive moves around him.  Mid-race he found himself in 7th but confident with the car he had under him for the last half.

Five laps in the track started to take rubber, reducing it to one good lane.  Feathers was a little underpowered, leaving him at a disadvantage getting up off the corners, but he continued to turn in a workmanlike effort to put himself in what he believed would be a good position late in the race.

His approach was paying off.  Others began experiencing late-race tire issues while Feathers had plenty left.  On a late restart, he moved his way into 3rd and battled for the runner-up spot.

The best-laid plans don’t always work out though.

With six laps remaining, a rocker arm broke in Feather’s engine, ending his night and landing him 10th in the final rundown.

“We had a decent car and thanks to patience we were in position to capitalize tonight if we had not broken a rocker arm.”, a disappointed Feathers said.

“I love to race and rubbin’ is racing but man, I swear nobody had a brake pedal out there tonight.  It was crazy.  No give and take at all.  I was trying to use my head and survive and it would have worked out if we didn’t have the engine issue.”

UP NEXT

Feathers will return to super late model action this weekend at Port Royal Speedway on Saturday night, April 20th.  This weekend, the speedway plans to use a Lucas Oil Late Model style time trial format in preparation for the series’ appearance at The Speed Palace on April 28th.

Tony Jackson and Scott Hess Racing continued to make strides in the 410 Sprint Car ranks as the Newville, PA native brought home a career-best 16th-place finish on Sunday at BAPS Motor Speedway.

Jackson and Hess initially planned to compete in three consecutive nights of racing in the 410 Sprint Car ranks, but rain again reared its ugly head and canceled planned action at Williams Grove on Friday and Lincoln Speedway on Saturday.

“We briefly considered running Port Royal on Saturday, but it just didn’t look like it would be a great time weather-wise and with the wind,” said Jackson. “In terms of BAPS, they watered the track and it was pretty top dominant. I was probably running a half lane lower than the guys in front of us and that’s a prime example of the learning curve and just where I need to grow.”

A total of 43 410 Sprint Cars attended BAPS on Sunday and Jackson kicked off the night by qualifying second quickest in his group during time trials. He then finished where he started – third – to lock himself into the A-main with the 12th starting position.

“We knew we had to be fast out the gate and we got a pretty good start to the heat race and was running second,” he said. “Ultimately, we slipped back to third and were able to get in the show which is obviously the goal each week.”

With a plan to continue to learn and make laps in mind, Jackson stayed steady inside of the top 15 for most of the 25-lap event. He narrowly missed out on his first career top-15 finish in the division after finishing 16th. However, with the high number of cars on hand, the team was happy to get in the show and bring the car home in one piece.

“Outside of a sanctioned event, I can’t really think of too many instances this early in the year to have 43 cars at the track,” said Jackson. “I didn’t expect that and I knew we had an uphill climb just to get in the show as a result. So ultimately to get in the show and run 16th is a pretty cool deal for us as a team and it’s something we can be proud of.”

Jackson will return to Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, PA on Friday to compete in 410 Sprint Car action before making his third start of the season at the Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, PA on Saturday.

“Mother Nature doesn’t look like it will do us any favors this weekend, but I’m excited to get back to the track and start contending for top 15 finishes and not just making shows,” said Jackson. “Lincoln is a track that I’ve kind of struggled at, but ultimately I think we’re learning there and hopefully we get in two A-main starts this weekend and some positive results.”

Feathers Dominates in Surprise Limited Late Model Visit to Hagerstown

Hagerstown, MD – April 9, 2024

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Trever Feathers recently encountered an opportunity to add a second Team Zero chassis to his program.  It wasn’t brand new but given the success Feathers has experienced since switching to the brand, the decision to acquire it didn’t take long.

QUICK RESULTS

DATE:  April 6, 2024

  • Class:  Limited Late Model
  • Track:  Hagerstown Speedway
  • City, State:   Hagerstown, MD
  • Quick Stats:  25 cars, Heat 1st (7), A-main 1st (7)

SURPRISE!

In little more than a week, Feathers and his team took the bare bones chassis and made it race-ready with a limited engine under the hood.

“The difference from Monday to Saturday was unbelievable.  My guys and sponsors are truly amazing.”, Feathers said of the effort by his team.

Feathers took his McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings, George’s Used Cars, Martin’s Pumping, North River Farm, Feathers & Son’s Roofing, Leggett Engine Research, Coffelt Graphics, Shane McDowell Racing, Fox Racing Shox No.27 to Hagerstown Speedway on Saturday to put it to the test.

You might have noticed the number change from his usual No.20 that adorns the sides of his super late model.

“That’s the number I first started racing with, so I just thought I would bring it back for this car.”, Feathers explained.

Feathers was originally slated to start 7th in his 8-lap heat race but lineup adjustments put him inside row two for the green flag.  From the start it was clear the newly built machine was up to the task.  Feathers drove into 2nd on the opening lap, then on lap six he drove by race-long leader Kyle Lear to take over the lead.  He went on to win by 1.8 seconds.

The Winchester, VA native showed more of the same in the main event.  Once again he took the green from inside row three.  It took him only three laps to claim the top spot and he dominated the rest of the way, winning by 1.96 seconds.

UP NEXT

Feathers will load up his No.27 once again this Saturday and head to Potomac Speedway in Mechanicsville, MD for the $3,999-to-win Danny Garrett Memorial Limited Late Models Steel Block Clash.

BAPS RECAP

Sunday’s sprint car season opener at BAPS Motor Speedway was a story of survival for Hartlaub.  A stay in the game, it’s not over til it’s over kind of day.

Hartlaub started 6th in his heat race, which was lined up based on timed hot laps.  He claimed the 5th and final transfer spot on the opening lap and held onto it for three laps before Justin Peck battled by him to take it away.

A 6th place finish in the heat race put the Ninety Five Motorsports team in the B-main.  Hartlaub raced a steady 2nd throughout that 10-lap event to earn the 21st starting spot in the 30-lap A-main.

Hartlaub made early ground in the feature race, cracking the top fifteen on lap six.  He peaked on lap twenty-four in the 13th spot but settled for a 14th-place finish at the checkers.

Tony Jackson and Scott Hess Racing Score Career Best Finish in 410 Sprint Car Action

Mechanicsburg, PA – April 2, 2024

by Justin Snyder / Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Tony Jackson and Scott Hess Racing took a major step forward in their rise to the 410 Sprint Car ranks as the Newville, PA native brought home a career best 17th-place finish on Friday at Williams Gove Speedway.

A planned doubleheader in the winged and wingless sportsman on Saturday at BAPS Motor Speedway ended up cancelled because of inclement weather.

“We were at the Grove on opening day, but with a tough pill draw and tougher track conditions I felt like this was a first real crack at the track,” said Jackson. “This time around was a much better experience and while the finish could have been better, we made another show and we’re continuing to learn and grow.”

A total of 27 410 Sprint Cars attended the famed Mechanicsburg track on Friday and Jackson kicked off the night by finishing third in a heat race. As a result, he was able to lock into the night’s A-main event with the eighth starting position.

“There were a lot of good drivers in the heat race, and we were able to run in second for quite a bit and we did more than hold our own,” he said. “I think lack of experience cost us a little bit, but of course I’m still learning, and we need nights like that to move forward as a team.”

Jackson ran consistently in between the ninth and 12th position for a majority of the feature event. However, several frequent cautions early in the event didn’t allow for the opportunity to make consistent laps or to get in a rhythm. As a result, he settled for a 17th place finish, which earned him his first career top 20 finish in the 410 Sprint Car ranks.

“I think we had maybe a 12th place car honestly, but the cautions really hurt our ability to get in a rhythm and it was just tough,” said Jackson. “I think one of the biggest obstacles I have to overcome is restarts and being in dirty air. Inexperience played a part in us maybe not showing all that we could, but overall, it was a decent night.”

Jackson will return to Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa on Friday to compete in 410 Sprint Car action before making his second start of the season at the Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, PA on Saturday.

With tough weather conditions playing spoiler for much of the early season in Central Pennsylvania, Jackson and Hess are optimistically looking forward to the opportunity of a two-race weekend to help continue to speed up the learning curve of taking on a new division of Sprint Car racing.

“We found a few small issues with the car since the last time we raced at Lincoln, but we feel like we’re better prepared this time around,” said Jackson. “Obviously Mother Nature hasn’t been anyone’s friend in the area so far, but just having multiple options in the area is a plus and was a huge selling point in us moving to the 410 ranks. The best way to learn is to keep making laps and I’m optimistic and excited for what’s to come!”

WEEKEND RESULTS

March 29 – Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, PA – Heat race: 3 (1); Feature: 17 (8).

Learning Officially Begins for Keen With 410 Sprint Car Debut

York Haven, PA – April 1, 2024

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Mgmt

Kyle Keen had a stellar season debut going just over a week ago in his 358 sprint car until a small mistake cost him a win.  Unfortunately, it also cost him a few weeks of being able to race that particular frame.

Given the team’s situation and the upcoming schedule options, Kyle Keen Motorsports decided to jump into the 410 sprint car earlier than expected.  They rolled into Williams Grove Speedway last Friday night ready and willing to get their collective rookie season started in the division.

QUICK RESULTS

DATE:  March 29, 2024

  • Division:  410 Sprint Cars
  • Track:  Williams Grove Speedway
  • City, State:   Mechanicsburg, PA
  • Stats:  28 cars, Heat 9th (9), B-main 9th (9)

IT'S A PROCESS

Keen’s first night out in the 410 was a learning experience on a hammer-down surface at ‘The Grove’.

There were no unrealistic expectations in his pit.  The family and team have been around racing long enough to understand Keen’s development in a 410 sprint car will take some time, especially given he only has a handful of seasons in the seat at any level of sprint car racing.  The learning curve might get accelerated quicker than expected as the laps accumulate, but whatever the timetable, the result will be worth it.

Keen started near the back of both his heat and B-main, just looking to make laps and get comfortable in the car.  At the end of the night, he shared some mental notes he had made during the night.

“Dirty air and how it plays with the car was a new experience. There is a massive amount of dirty air when starting in the back of the field and it definitely plays with the balance of the car. Throttle control also took a few laps to get figured out.”, Keen commented.

“With as hard as you can drive these cars, I felt like I have to somewhat re-learn how to enter the corners, which is something I sort of expected. You carry lots of speed and can really drive in (to the corner) pretty deep.”

“Now it’s just a matter of getting laps. I felt extremely comfortable in the car and with the speed, but there are nuances with these cars that will just take some time to learn. Laps laps laps.  That’s the only answer.  Thank you to everyone who came out last night to my very first 410 race. I appreciate all of the support!”

UP NEXT

With his 358 sprint car in the midst of some minor frame repairs, Keen will focus on his 410 program for the next few weeks.  Next up will be another trip to Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, April 5th.

SEASON STATS

358 SPRINT CAR:  1 race, 0 wins, 0 top 5’s, 0 top 10’s, 1 top 15
