Frustrating Weekend Builds Notebook, Refocuses ABR

Coming off a season opener back on March 6th that saw Austin Berry come out of the gate looking strong, ABR entered their first three-race weekend of the season feeling positive and ready for the very competitive ULMS weekend.  

 

March 18:  ULMS / Williams Grove Speedway / Mechanicsburg, PA

     (21 cars, Qualifying 10th, Heat 6th, A-main 11th)

 

Friday night brought 70 degree weather and 21 super late models to the famous Williams Grove Speedway on a mid-March evening.  Warm weather in March and super late models at ‘The Grove’ are both rare occurrences in PA.

Over the past couple seasons, Berry and team have made it a goal to compete at multiple tracks each year.  The team knows that is an essential aspect of learning and growth.

 

You have to race as much as you are able and challenge yourself at a variety of facilities.  It’s the best way to improve.  It makes me better behind the wheel and it makes all of us better at understanding what our car needs”, Berry shared.

 

Berry’s night started off reasonably well with a 10th quick qualifying effort and a surge into 3rd place early in his heat race.  Contact with another car entering turn 3 early in that race sent Berry spinning and relegated him to the rear of the field for the restart.  He was only able to rebound to a 6th place finish in the short event, which put him 16th on the starting grid for the 30-lap feature event, instead of the top-10 starting spot it appeared he would have.

 

The Mifflin, PA native clawed his way to an eventual 11th place finish on a surface that was a bit narrow and challenging to pass on.  It wasn’t quite the finish Berry felt they were capable of, but they had added a couple lessons to their notebook.

 

March 19:  ULMS / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

 

Saturday’s ULMS event at the ‘Speed Palace’ was cancelled due to rain.

 


One highlight of the weekend occurred prior to Sunday’s on-track activities at Port Royal Speedway.  The speedway officially presented Berry with a beautiful plaque to commemorate his 2021 Most Improved Driver award.

 

 

 March 20:  ULMS / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     (32 cars, Qualifying 3rd in Flight 2 , Heat 3rd, A-main 16th)

 

The weather front that moved through Pennsylvania and washed out Saturday’s event brought everyone back to reality as more normal March temperatures and conditions set it.  A high of 50 degrees, spitting rain and 15 mph winds were the order of the day for the final event of the weekend.

 

None of that kept the race teams away though as 32 super late model teams signed in.  Austin Berry’s pill draw placed him in the second flight for group time trials, and he promptly ripped off the third quickest lap in a stout group.

 

The lap put Berry in a good position to claim a spot in the redraw through his heat race.  He earned the second starting spot in heat three.  A top two finish would hand him a spot in the redraw and would mean he would start no worse than 8th in the 30-lap A-main.

 

On the opening lap Berry slipped back one spot to third.  He spent the remainder of the 8-lap qualifier trying to reclaim that prized spot, pulling to the bumper and even alongside Jacob Hawkins on multiple occasions.  Berry was working hard to time his passing attempt just right in hopes he would be close enough to strike if the door opened.

 

When two cars run so close together, the air flows over the trailing car and therefore no longer creates downforce on the nose of the car.  That loss of pressure on the nose of the car will cause the car to wash up the track, unable to hold its line.  That’s what happened to Berry on multiple occasions as he tried to work back into second.  He ultimately finished 3rd, which meant an 11th place starting spot in the feature event.

 

In an effort to keep up with the tricky, cold weather, day-turned-to-night, surface, as well as solve problems from earlier in the day, Berry and team made some major changes prior to their feature.  Those changes did not pan out.  Berry knew early on he had a very loose racecar and was unable to enter the corners as aggressively as he wanted to.  As a result, he slid backwards through the running order as he fought the ill-handling racecar to a 16th place finish.

 

I’m extremely frustrated.  We all are.  We have been fighting little issues since our test session back at the beginning of March.  We have been trying new stuff and I think we got off our sequence for adjustments.  Nobody to blame.  We made our decisions together”, Berry commented.

 

Berry and team have certainly raised the bar for themselves the past year.  They have been running more consistently than ever and as a result, they expect more.  

 

We push ourselves.  We know we have the stuff it takes, so we want to get our program to a place where being off a little off means running 10th“, a determined Berry explained.

 

We just need to get back to work”, Berry concluded.

Reinhardt Sets Crosshairs on Sophomore Season with All Stars

Capitol Renegade Team Ready to Apply 2021 Experience

Kyle Reinhardt achieved a career objective in 2021 by putting a full season with a traveling sprint car series on his resume.  That certainly was not the end-goal though.  The Neptune City, NJ native has much more to do.

 

Considering the challenges of life on the road, his first season with the All Star Circuit of Champions (ASCoC) was a good one by most measures.  Despite the difficult learning curve that comes with keeping a team prepared and competitive, while logging mile after mile on the road, he captured his first All Star victory and finished 8th in driver points.

 

It wasn’t good enough by Reinhardt’s measure though.  He is a driven young man with a passion for the sport.  It is well-documented that he gave up an engineering job to go full time sprint car racing a few years ago.  He hasn’t stopped working on the cars or his partnerships ever since, and it shows.

 

The Capitol Renegade / Capitol Custom Coaches & Trailers / Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants / J&J Auto Racing No.91 team has steadily improved, both on and off the track, during that time.  The team continues to position itself to achieve the goals Reinhardt and company have set for themselves.  

 

The new season will find Reinhardt back out on the road for his sophomore season with the ASCoC.  He is ready to apply the lessons learned in his freshman year and use that knowledge to reach his 2022 goals.

 

We learned a lot last year.  Not just on the track but off, including several things that will help us be better organized for the grind of maintaining our equipment while on the road.  Being with Capitol (Custom Coaches & Trailers), our trailer is sold at the end of each season.  It’s a lot of work to start fresh with a new trailer every year, but it gives us the opportunity to change the layout to be better organized.  This year especially, we took advantage of that so hopefully things are easier, and we are more efficient this year“, Reinhardt commented.

 

There are little things that will make the second time around with the All Stars easier for the Capitol Renegade team too.  The logistics of getting up and down the road, knowing where to stop, where the team can work on their equipment, and where they can get some rest, will collectively make the season at least a little bit easier too.

 

Reinhardt went on to mention that the team’s decision to not travel to GA and FL in February was also part of the equation to be better prepared for the points races.  The post-pandemic supply chain issues that have affected everyday life are also impacting racing.  

 

It’s taking a lot longer than normal these days to get certain parts, so the last thing we wanted to do was travel south to race, have issues, break things, and dig ourselves a hole that’s tough to recover from in terms of resources.  I’m just trying to be smart and make the most of what we have“, Reinhardt said.

 

All of the careful preparation by Reinhardt and team is aimed at successfully achieving their goals for 2022.  The number one goal:  multiple wins.  Last season, Reinhardt parked the Capitol Renegade / Capitol Custom Coaches & Trailers / Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants / J&J Auto Racing No.91 in victory lane one time.  It was at The Dirt Oval at Route 66 in Joliet, IL.  He felt the team was capable of more than that but struggled with consistency.  

 

The second part of Reinhardt’s goal is to finish in the top five of the season’s point standings.  Improved consistency is the key element that can lead to achieving both goals:  more wins and a top five in points.  It sounds like a simple formula, but Reinhardt knows they have to put in the work and apply what they learned to get there.

 

Another key element for a successful team is having good relationships with great marketing partners.  Reinhardt and team have a solid foundation on that front.

 

We wouldn’t be able to this at the level we do it without all the people who are behind this 91 car.  Jeff McCall is a huge part of our deal and of course Wayne Quackenbush with Capitol Renegade.  I’m very excited and happy to say that all of our partners are returning to support our second season with the All Stars and a couple have stepped up to provide a little more and do more with us.  These relationships are a two way street.  Our partners support us because it makes sense for them and we do everything we can to promote them.“, Kyle shared.

 

In addition to the All Star Circuit of Champions schedule, which consists of 53 points-paying races across 9 states, Reinhardt’s schedule will likely look similar to 2021.  Major national events and competition near the team’s home base of New Oxford, PA will be tacked on when the opportunity presents itself.

Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team will make their 2022 debut this weekend at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night, March 18th and Port Royal Speedway the following night.  The team will make a few appearances in Central Pennsylvania over the next few weeks to prepare for the All Star Circuit of Champions season, which officially begins Friday, April 8th at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, OH.

Feathers Fast In Port Royal Opener

The Virginia Driver Dominates Heat Race, Runs Fourth In Main Event

PORT ROYAL, Pa. – Trever Feathers had the raw speed to carve out a sliver of history Sunday at Port Royal Speedway, but exterior circumstances deflected a run at those honors.

 

Feathers finished fourth in the 25-lap Opening Day event, just shy of a third-straight season opening win at the half-mile Juniata River Valley clay oval that would have been a Super Late Model track record.

 

Prior to his first feature event of the season, Feathers was more than three-tenths faster than the nearest competitor in warm-ups and backed that with a two-second win in his heat race.

 

The 2019 and ‘20 winner of the Opening Day event had to settle for something less this time.

 

“We were super fast on Sunday … then redrew [the fifth-starting spot] and couldn’t go anywhere,” Feathers said. “We struggled to get going in that feature.”

 

Feathers started fifth and finished five seconds off Colton Flinner’s winning pace in the No. 20 Larry Royston’s Septic Services / Martins Pumping Service / Feathers & Sons Roofing / Fastenal of Winchester, VA / McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / MB Sports Collectibles / Leggett Engine Research / Coffelt Graphics / Larry Royston Properties / Larry Royston Equipment / Bilstein Shocks / Longhorn Chassis.

 

The Winchester, Va., native would have nudged ahead of Andy Haus and Jason Covert in the Port Royal record books for most Opening Day event wins in a Super Late Model.

 

Feathers clocked the only 19-second lap in warm-ups, but not nearly enough windows emerged in the feature to cash in on such speed.

 

“I think if we would have gotten up front first, we would have been OK – held our own in clean air,” Feathers said. “When I was in dirty air, I couldn’t do anything. I would stall out. The way my car was, I needed to use the entire race track to make speed. When you’re racing around other people, you can’t do that.”

 

In the feature, Feathers ran fifth until back-to-back caution periods on laps 12 and 13 gave Feathers the chance to get to fourth-place.

 

Over the final 12 laps Feathers hounded Gary Stuhler for the final podium spot but couldn’t find a way by the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame member.

 

“We have to find some more speed,” Feathers said. “What we had up there Sunday when the track got real slow wasn’t working.”

 

“The track workers did the best they could, it just got a little choppy up [in turns one and two],” Feathers said. “It wasn’t too bad, the first race of the year. It was about what you expect. There was still snow on the side of the road when we went through there. They did the best they could.”

 

Feathers and crew had initially planned to race the first two weekends at the Speed Palace, but with cold temperatures in the forecast, the team will instead stay home and save resources.

 

“The tire situation is really scaring me,” Feather said. “I was told a lot of people didn’t show up [Sunday at Port Royal] because of tires. We have enough [tires] to run through March. This weekend is a one-day show, and with the high gas prices, that’s probably $400 to get up there for one show and back.”

 

In optimal circumstances Feathers would like to squeeze two full races out of a set of tires. This past weekend, however, the team burned through a whole set.

 

Now the team shifts its focus to a pair of $3,500-to-win United Late Model Series events, also at Port Royal Speedway, on Saturday, March 19 and Sunday, March 20.

 

“We’re trying to be smart about it and hope the tire situation gets better as the year goes on,” Feathers said.

Newlin Shows Speed Early at 80th Speed Palace Season Opener

Pryde Motorsports Entry Competitive from the Start

Thus far, in his brief career in the top division of winged sprint car competition, Zach Newlin has shown one thing is for sure.

 

He belongs in the seat of a 410 sprint car.

 

Sure, there will be moments his inexperience shows.  That’s how one learns.  Newlin has already had his moments though.  With a full-time season slated this year, 2022 will likely be full of learning moments, but there will certainly be more notable achievements too.

 

March 6th:  2022 Season Opener / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     (42 cars, Heat 2nd, A-main 14th)

 

 

The 2022 season kicked off for Zach Newlin and the Pryde Motorsports team at Port Royal Speedway’s 80th season opener.  They were one of 42 highly capable entries signed in for action on the early March day in Central PA that greeted racers and fans with temperatures in the low 70’s.  It didn’t just look like race season, it felt like race season.

 

As is common for early season shows, the heat lineups were set by a random pill draw.  The five heats would each be eight laps in distance with the top four finishers transferring to the A-main, but only the top two being awarded with a spot in the redraw.

 

Newlin’s day started with a bit of luck when he drew a low pill, which put him on the pole of the third heat.  The initial start was called back after Zach’s front row mate got a little anxious with his right foot.  The second attempt was much better, but Newlin had to fall into second and go after the leader, Michael Walter II.  His laps times improved steadily throughout the first half of the race, which allowed him to close the gap on Walter.  Newlin came home 2nd, just 0.77 seconds behind.  Cannon, Wolfe, Flick and Rahmer finished 3rd-6th.

 

It was an encouraging first 8 laps of the season.  The Grove Financial & Associates / Dillman Hauling / Del Grosso Foods / Ron’s RV Sales / Kirby Kitner Excavating / FIT Transportation / Christine Booher, Realtor / Gio’s BBQ / T&M Homebuilders / Robert Lee Jr. Trucking / R&B Auto Proz / Strange Oval / Walker Performance Filtration / RAM Acoustics / Newlin Bar Service, Pryde Motorsports No.29 was competitive and had the speed necessary to run up front.

 

Once again, the pill draw was Newlin’s friend.  During the redraw, he pulled the #4, which put him outside row two for the first 25-lap A-main of the season.  Newlin hung tough in the top five over the course of the first half-dozen laps, but then slipped back  a few spots over the next few laps.  The Millerstown, PA native settled into the back half of the top 10 and held his ground there.

 

The red flag flew for a flip in turn one with 12 laps complete and brought the field to a stop.  On the ensuing restart, Newlin lost one spot.  By the time 15 laps were in the books, it was apparent the car wasn’t quite as good as it was before the stoppage.   Newlin lost a couple more spots and was nipped at the finish line, ending his day 14th.

 

It may not have been the finish the Pryde Motorsports team and crew chief Lance Newlin thought they were capable of, but 42 top-notch teams had shown up on this day, and while many went home without making the show, the No.29 team with Newlin at the wheel was able to run up front most of the day.  

 

We were fine until that red.  We had some cleaner air to run in before that, but then in traffic on the restart the car just wasn’t as good.  Dirty air affects these things a lot.  We were just too tight in traffic.  I think we were a top-10 car if the race had stayed green, but that’s part of racing.   Nothing to do but keep working on it and get better.  I can’t complain.  Overall, we had a really good day.  We made the show, and we were competitive, so I’ll take it for sure“, Newlin shared after the race.

 

Zach had the right perspective.  It was a great showing for the entire team.  The top 10’s and top 5’s are not far away.

Halligan Logs Solid Start to 2022 at Port Royal

Risser Motorsports Leaves Season Opener Feeling Good

The beginning of a new season always consists of more questions than it does answers for a race team.

 

Will our equipment be better than last year?  Will the competition be tougher than before?   Will our performance pick up where it left off last year?  Were the offseason changes we made the right ones?  

 

There’s no way to know any answers until you get out there and test yourself.

 

For Jeff Halligan and the Risser Motorsports team, the first test of 2022 finally arrived in the form of Port Royal Speedway’s 2022 season opener.

 

March 6th:  2022 Season Opener / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     (42 cars, Heat 3rd, A-main 7th)

 

A beautiful early March day in Central PA brought 42 winged 410 sprint car teams out of their race shops to finally sling some clay again after their winter hibernation.  The show used a random draw to set the lineups for five 8-lap heats.  The top four finishers from each would transfer to the A-main, with the top two participating in a redraw that would determine their starting spot in the top ten.

 

Halligan’s pill draw at registration placed him in the 6th starting spot of heat number one.  The opening day field was deep.  It was full of top notch teams, so it was clear every spot would count if you wanted to be in the mix at the end of the day.

 

If his first competitive lap of the year was any indication, Jeff will be a force to be reckoned with in 2022.  At the drop of the green, he ducked low and charged between two cars to swiftly move into 4th by the time he had set the car in turn one.  Building momentum off of turn two and down the back stretch, Halligan dove low into turn three and claimed 3rd by the time lap one was in the books.

 

From there, the Ephrata, PA resident turned his focus to tracking down a redraw spot.  Jeff was able to close the gap on 2nd place Devin Borden and show the young driver his nose at least once but couldn’t capture the spot.  Halligan settled for a 3rd place finish in the Risser Motorsports / TheTreeCenter.com / Victory Auto of Lewistown / EMM Sales & Service / Jake’s Golf Carts, No.45.

 

We were surrounded by a pretty talented group in our heat race, so I knew I had to put us in a good position, which meant I needed to make it happen early“, Halligan shared.

 

Jeff took the green for the day’s 25-lap finale from the 11th starting spot.  After gaining one spot in the early laps, he settled into a rhythm looking for more.  It took some laps but eventually the car came to life, and he was able to steadily pick up a few spots over the course of several laps as the race drew into its final stages.  He ultimately crossed the finish line in 7th, a +4 result on a tricky daytime surface.

 

I’m really pleased.  We passed cars and moved forward every time we hit the track today.  We were really good in the feature.  There were good cars in front of us that we just couldn’t quite get to“, the Pennsylvania native commented.

 

One big positive today is that we were fast late in the race.  We got better as the race went on.  That’s something we couldn’t do last year.  Usually we would be quick early but then fade a few spots late.  To win these races, you have to be good in the closing laps, so I’m happy about that”, Halligan commented.

 

It was only one race, but Jeff Halligan, crew chief Kyle Defibaugh, and the team now have at least a few of the answers.   They have a solid foundation to build on in the weeks and months ahead.  Eventually they will get answers to other questions such as, can they improve on their 2021 stats?

 

“I’m proud of the whole team.  Everyone did the best they could all day long.  We made the most of our situation all day.  You can’t ask for much more than that.  We have something we can build off of now.  I’m thankful for our marking partners that make this possible for us.  I hope everyone goes out and supports them“, Halligan concluded.

 

One thing is certain.  It will be exciting to follow Jeff and the Risser Motorsports team to see how the questions get answered in 2022.

Berry Recovers from Early Spin to Record Top 10

ABR Shows They’re Ready to Compete at the Front

It was the first Sunday in March and temperatures were climbing into the 70’s in Central PA.  By mid-afternoon Austin Berry had already put on a show from the back of his heat race and climbed out of the car with a big smile on his face.  

 

Looks like 2022 might be a fun one in the ABR pits.

 

March 6th:  2022 Season Opener / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     (18 cars, Heat 2nd, A-main 10th)

 

Despite the beautiful weather and being couped up in their race shops all winter, only 18 super late model teams signed in for opening day at Port Royal Speedway.  It was a quality field but a bit short of the count fans have become accustomed to at the ‘Speed Palace’.  Unfortunately the supply chain issues that are affecting everyday items are affecting the availability of race parts too.  Some teams are still waiting for engine and suspension parts to get their cars race-ready.

 

Austin Berry Racing (ABR) was coming off a 2021 season where they had found their groove.  They had established a consistent baseline and collected a victory, then went to work in the shop and felt confident they could maintain that level of performance, if not improve on it in 2022.

 

Two 8-lap heats were lined up by random draw.  While all cars would qualify for the A-main, only the top 4 would get to redraw for one of the top eight starting spots.  As luck would have it, Austin Berry’s day started by drawing a high pill, which placed him at the back of the lineup, outside row 4, for the second heat race.

 

It didn’t take Berry long to show ABR had come prepared.  When the green flag waved on heat number two, Berry got a great run off the high side of turn four and the outside lane opened up down the straightaway, allowing Berry to rip the top all the way into 3rd place by the time he reached the exit of turn two.  He proceeded to dive under the No.94 of Jason Miller in turn three and claim 2nd.

 

Berry then set his sights on leader Kyle Hardy and was able to close to within a car length for a couple moments in the closing laps.  Austin flashed under the checkered flag in 2nd, one second behind Hardy.

 

The reward for his qualifying effort was a spot in the redraw, which garnered Berry the 3rd starting spot in the feature event.  It was evident The Tire Mart / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86 was capable of running up front.

 

It would just be up to the team to make the right adjustments to keep up with the ever-changing surface, then the driver would just need to make the right decisions behind the wheel.  Simple, right?

 

As the field came to the green for the 25-lap main event, there was some incidental contact among the front few rows as they sorted out exactly when to mash the gas.  Fortunately, everyone collected themselves and got rolling down the straightaway.  Things didn’t turn out quite as well at that end of the track for Berry.  His car over-rotated on entry.  He nearly had it saved but contact with another car left Berry facing oncoming traffic.  On the bright side, everyone else avoided him.  He was able to rejoin the field and restart at the rear.

 

The Mifflin, PA resident composed himself and went back to work.  Racing in traffic is always a bit more challenging, but Berry was able to work his way back to a 10th place finish.  Not what he was aiming for, but a decent recovery.

 

I’m obviously disappointed.  We had a great car and didn’t get the finish we should have.  The spin was our own fault.  We made a mistake calculating an adjustment, so the car didn’t handle like I expected it to when I entered turn one.  Nothing we can do but learn from it.  We’ll come back next week, show how good we are, and get a finish that helps us forget this one.  As frustrating as today was, I’m actually really excited about this season because we have a really good car.  We are capable of running up front every week.  We just need to keep putting in the effort”, Berry commented, clearly experiencing a range of emotions.

Hartlaub Rolls Into New Season with Momentum

Looking to Improve on Solid 2021 Results

Kody Hartlaub has been racing in Central PA for over 15 years, but you might not know his name.

 

Yet.

 

Kody had a lot of success in his early years in go-karts, but that was followed by a period where he was in and out of the sport.  There was some 600 racing and the beginnings of his 358 sprint car career, but various circumstances kept being in the seat a limited hobby.  Finally, in 2018 he logged nearly a full season in the 358’s, but again that was followed by sitting out 2019 and a sparse 2020 schedule.

 

Finally, in 2021, everything fell into place for the Littlestown, PA native to run a full season.  Hartlaub was a regular at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, PA in their 358 sprint car division.  He competed in a few other area events as well.

 

Running on a consistent basis provided more opportunity to learn behind the wheel and apply the knowledge the very next week.  It appeared to be the best medicine.  Hartlaub captured his first 358 sprint car win, five other top-5 runs and finished 4th in the season point standings.

 

The stats back up the statement that he has momentum entering 2022.  He garnered 35% of his season points total in the final four races of 2021 at Lincoln Speedway.  Pretty stout, huh?

 

Jim Siegel told me one day, when you have success, act like you’ve been there.  That always stuck with me.  It says a lot about a person’s character.  Although, I must admit, last summer when I got my first win at Lincoln, I wasn’t able to manage that!“, Hartlaub laughed, recalling the raw emotion that came with that achievement.

 

An important change that really helped the team tremendously was the arrival of Brewer Home Improvements as part of the team in mid-2021.  Longtime family friend and race fan, Pat Brewer, got involved and became a key part of the team.  Not only did his business become a partner, but Pat was also at the shop and the track helping the team regularly.

 

Another key partner, Moose Blocks, Inc., has been supporting Kody for over five years.  They also happen to be Hartlaub’s employer.  He gets to spend his days making aluminum sprint car parts, which pretty much makes racing a daily part of his life.

 

Seigel Racing is another major part of the equation for Hartlaub’s program.  In addition to providing resources, help and information, former Central Pennsylvania sprint car racer Steve Seigel has become a mentor to Kody.  His extensive experience and advice have been invaluable.  He has helped shorten the learning curve for Hartlaub in the seat.  

 

When he’s not racing himself, Kody can usually be found helping the current Siegel Racing wheelman, Jim Siegel, with his 410 sprint car.  It’s a win-win situation.  In return for all they do for him, Hartlaub can help the Siegel team, plus acquire even more knowledge in the process.

 

Along with his partners and Steve’s mentoring, and in addition to his own sweat-equity, Kody relies heavily on family to make it all happen for him.  

 

My dad is there with me in the pits and the shop every step of the way, my wife not only handles the shirt sales but fully supports me in every way, and my mom is the glue holding it all together, doing whatever she can to make sure we have what we need and making sure we don’t go hungry!  I can’t thank them all enough“, Hartlaub shared.

 

Plans for 2022 will once again have the Brewer Home Improvements / Moose Blocks, Inc. / Smith Titanium / SRR Engines / Siegel Racing / Jason Emlet, Iron Valley Real Estate / Bingham Appraisals / Pretzel Boy / HAAS Shocks / C.H. Folk & Son Feeds / Chop Designs / Herr Electric, Kody Hartlaub Racing No.2 at Lincoln Speedway for all 358 sprint car shows.  In addition, the team will venture to the legendary Williams Grove Speedway for a couple 358 Summer Series events, as well as one trip each to Path Valley Speedway in Spring Run, PA and BAPS Motor Speedway in York Haven, PA.

I can’t wait to get out there and apply everything I learned last season.  I want to use that experience to make better decisions behind the wheel and improve on our 2021 results.  Our goal is to be competitive every week and to get two wins.  Anything more will be ‘gravy’ as they say.  I’m ready to do everything necessary to make sure we’re prepared, and I execute on the track“, a notably energized Hartlaub commented.

 

That energy is likely to help the East Berlin, PA resident continue his momentum on the track.  By the time 2022 concludes, a lot more folks will know his name.

Zach Newlin Set to Embark on First Full Time 410 Sprint Season

Busy 2022 Will Also Include Several 358 Sprint Races

During both the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Zach Newlin was fortunate to have the chance to dabble in winged 410 sprint car competition in Central Pennsylvania.  It was enough to show his potential, and it was enough to land a full time opportunity for 2022.

 

When the season opens at Port Royal Speedway this month, Newlin will once again be behind the wheel of the Pryde Motorsports No.29, fielded by long-time owner Allen Pryde.  It’s the same seat he finished last season in, but now the team has the benefit of having worked together and an offseason to prepare.

 

Newlin will have good equipment, a knowledgeable car owner, and his long time crew chief (and brother), Lance Newlin by his side.  Still, he is realistic when preparing for his first full season in the tough 410 sprint car division in the heart of PA Posse-land.

 

Sure, it would be great to pick up a win.  I think it could happen if things go right for us, but a good goal for us is to run in the top 10 consistently.  If we aim for that and achieve it, then we will be in position to grab some top 5’s or podium runs when the opportunity is there.  You can’t expect too much, but you have to challenge yourself“, Newlin said.

 

He’s not just saying the right things.  He speaks from experience.  He’s been there before on other levels.  He may still be ‘green’ when it comes to 410 racing, but Newlin has been racing and climbing through the ranks over the past 20+ years and has achieved his share of success in each of them.

 

There is no reason to believe this new adventure won’t have a similar outcome.  This wheelman and his team are likely to garner some attention and turn some heads this season and beyond.

 

The majority of the Pryde Motorsports 2022 schedule will bring the Grove Financial & Associates / Dillman Hauling / Del Grosso Foods / Ron’s RV Sales / Kirby Kitner Excavating / FIT Transportation / Christine Booher, Realtor / Gio’s BBQ / T&M Homebuilders / Robert Lee Jr. Trucking / R&B Auto Proz / Strange Oval / Walker Performance Filtration / RAM Acoustics / Newlin Bar Service No.29 to the ‘Speed Palace’ in Port Royal, PA, but you can expect to see them at BAPS Motor Speedway as well.  Other events could be added as the season progresses, so be sure to follow along to keep up to date.

 

In addition to a substantial schedule of possibly 30-35 races in the 410 sprint car, Newlin will also be returning to the seat of the Mansberger Motorsports No.21m 358 sprint car, which primarily competes at Williams Grove Speedway.

 

I love racing with Dan (Mansberger) and his team.  He’s got good equipment and my brother (Lance) and I have a good time racing with them.   We were a contender last year and had a couple good runs early, but gremlins kept surfacing and taking us out of races”, Newlin commented.

 

“I probably won’t get to race the Grove with the 410 this year, so this gives me a chance to race there.  I love the challenge of Williams Grove.  If you win there, you’ve earned it.   Plus, seat time is seat time.  You can never get enough laps and experience“, the Millerstown, PA native shared.

Austin Berry Racing Adds The Tire Mart as Primary Partner for 2022

New Look and New Goals for the Rising Central PA Team

The 2022 season is shaping up to be an exciting one for Austin Berry Racing.

 

During a recent video interview with Addicted2DirtPR.com, Austin Berry announced that The Tire Mart of Harrisburg, PA has come on board as the team’s primary partner for the upcoming season.

SNEAK PREVIEW of the 2022 ABR No.86!

For those who have been paying attention, you likely noticed the trend of improvement shown by Austin and his ABR team the past couple seasons.  If you didn’t have an eye on them before, you probably have since they captured their first super late model victory at Port Royal Speedway in June of 2021.

 

Last season not only brought victory, it brought much improved consistency and competitiveness for the little team from Mifflin, PA that competes against top notch teams on a weekly basis.    

 

The Tire Mart, a full-service automotive repair facility located at 4914 Jonestown Road, pitched in to help Berry run the 3-day Lucas Oil Dirt Series Late Model event at Port Royal last August.  On the opening night of that event, Berry timed 2nd quick in his flight, trailing only “Superman” Jonathan Davenport, and ultimately raced his way into his first career Lucas Oil event through his heat race.

Several key partners who have been with ABR in recent years are returning as well.  Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop, Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter, JDS Racing, Nathan Berry Beef Farm, A&C Racing Engines and Swift Springs all return to continue their successful partnerships.

 

Austin Berry’s successful 2021 campaign ended slightly prematurely when the team broke a rear end and was unable to get it repaired in time to make the final super late model race of the season at Port Royal Speedway.  The abrupt end left Berry with a bit of a void and wanting more.  Maybe that’s a blessing in disguise.  Berry was still hungry.  Maybe that’s a good way to enter the offseason.

 

As soon as we knew we were done for the year back in September, we went into winter mode.  We started tearing the car down and making a list of everything we needed to get our parts ordered.  Given how long it has taken lately to get parts, we didn’t want to run into the issue of not having what we needed to prepare for 2022“, Berry explained.

 

Thus far they are on track to accomplish their off-season mission.  ABR has compiled at least two of everything, with the exception of a frame.  There are extra hubs, brakes, calipers, transmission, rear ends, engines and body panels.

 

In the past, certain issues would put us on the sideline, sometimes for weeks.  This year, we want to be prepared, so when something happens, it won’t keep us out“, Berry shared.

 

Preparation has many forms though.  Parts are just one of them.  Austin and the team also put emphasis on improving their information and knowledge during the 2021 season and off-season.  During 2021 they implemented an improved record-keeping method to help the team log race night notes to be used as a reference point for future setup based on track conditions and several other criteria.

 

The team’s improved consistency has allowed them to begin focusing on finer details and other continuous improvements.  As a part of those efforts, the team leveraged their annual trek to the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) trade show in Indianapolis in early December to keep in touch with the latest technology and information from the sports top vendors.  The show is also an opportunity for teams to maintain existing relationships with partners and suppliers, as well as potentially establish new ones.

 

The team’s December trip was a productive one, as was their strategy to start their 2022 car prep in September.  They are on the verge of being ready to head to the track for Port Royal’s season opener, which as of the publishing of this story is scheduled occur in 10 days, weather permitting.

Feathers Aims For Bold 2022 Season

The Virginia Team Is Eager To Grow Its Brand On The National Stage

WINCHESTER, Va. – Trever Feathers and Larry Royston Racing will start their new race season Sunday, March 6, at Port Royal (Pa.) Speedway’s 73rd annual Opening Day event with a chance to advance the record books.

 

The 29-year-old has won the past two Port Royal season openers, which means a third win next month would give Feathers the most all-time Opening Day feature victories in the Late Model division at Port Royal

 

Feathers is tied with Andy Haus and Jason Covert for most Opening Day Late Model wins at the Juniata River Valley half-mile clay oval.

 

All told, Feathers and Royston are gearing for their boldest season to date.

 

The team, at the moment, aims to run 30 to 40 races around the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond this year, with potential for 10 to 20 additional events on the national level contingent upon resource inventory.

 

“We’re looking pretty hopeful to start this year,” Feathers said. “A lot’s changed over the winter. Hopefully we can start the year the way we finished.

 

“What makes Opening Day at Port Royal so special is there’s not many places that are racing in early March, especially in Pennsylvania. They have some racing going on in Florida, and there’s always racing going on in the south. But Port Royal has become a staple in racing – in our area and on the national level.

“It’s cool to win that first race because you know a lot of people are watching, a lot of eyes are on that day. It’s always a good thing to start the year off with a win. Anytime you win at Port Royal is big.”

 

Feathers enters his 13th season running Late Models full-time in which he vies to improve upon last year’s three-win result and effectively grow his brand on the national stage.

 

Longhorn Chassis and Bilstein Shocks, the equipment behind Tim McCreadie’s run to last year’s Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series championship, returns for its third and 13th seasons, respectively, with Feathers.

 

Since 2009, Feathers has collected 42 wins in the Late Model and two track championships, numbers that have earned him the reputation of a regional stalwart.

“Fastenal of Winchester, they’ve been on board my car and my dad’s car since 2001. They’ve been a huge part of our maintenance program, making sure we don’t have anything break at the race track.

Feathers will be a frequent competitor at Port Royal Speedway this year, the Central Pennsylvania facility that’s turned into one of the nicest motorsport venues in recent years and streamed nationally to race fans abroad via FloRacing.

 

Last year, Feathers finished seventh in the Port Royal Late Model standings despite running only 13 of 18 scheduled events.

 

Feathers will also make Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series stops on April 9 at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway and April 10 at Port Royal Speedway.

 

The $20,000-to-win USA 100 on Aug. 7 at Virginia Motor Speedway is on Feathers’ radar, as well as the $50,000-to-win finale of Rumble by the River weekend on August 26-27, sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.

 

Outside that, Feathers’ schedule remains wide open and fluid.

 

If feasible, Feathers would like to run the Castrol FloRacing Night in America opener at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway on Tuesday, April 12.

 

FloRacing Night in America is a 12-race miniseries from April 12 to Nov. 12 that pays $22,000-to-win the first 11 races with the Nov. 12 finale at Senoia (Ga.) Raceway cashing out $53,053-to-win.

 

Feathers is exploring business partnerships that’d allow his Larry Royston Racing team the autonomy to travel outside the Mid-Atlantic region.

 

“We’d be able to put on 10, 20 races if we were able to find some other partners in this situation,” Feathers said. “Things have kind of gotten a little higher cost-wise. We would like to run some bigger races a little further out of the area. I know we are more than capable of running at that level.”

Feathers hopes this year is a springboard into some of his greatest desires. When the time is right, he and his Larry Royston Racing team would like to run a national tour – perhaps the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series or the World of Outlaws Late Models. 

 

Therefore every opportunity is a valued stepping stone along the way.

 

“First thing’s first, we have to be able to find some consistency,” Feathers said. “We have to be able to go to different race tracks and be competitive. That’s how you win races, you know? You can’t go there and throw stuff at the car and hope you’re going to win.

 

“That doesn’t work anymore. We have to find consistency. Once we find the consistency, then make the right changes to be the fastest car or put ourselves in position to win.”
