Berry’s Return Delayed; Team Reevaluating Objectives

Mifflin, PA – April 28, 2022

Austin Berry has been forced to sit out of action the last two weekends while waiting on engine parts to put either of their two engines back in action.  In an effort to shorten their time on the sidelines they worked with their engine builder, A&C Racing Engines, to possibly combine resources from the two engines to make one that would get them back to the track.  Unfortunately, the team encountered challenges with that concept and has determined it isn’t a viable option.

Given that, ABR will sit out a bit longer until A&C Racing Engines has the proper parts to make repairs.  The team expressed their thanks and appreciation to Allen for the time and effort he has dedicated to trying to get them back to the track as quickly as possible.

Allen and everyone at A&C has been great.  It’s certainly not their fault we have been forced to sit out”, car owner Ken Berry commented.

“There are a lot of supply issues this season and we’re not the only ones affected.  We tried to do everything we could over the winter to try to prevent needing to sit out any races this year, but it still happened.  We just want to apologize to our fans.  We’ll be back soon, and we’ll be ready to go after another win“, Austin Berry added.

Although Berry had his No.86 The Tire Mart / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 in the thick of the points battle at Port Royal Speedway before the engine issues occurred, that has changed due to their absence.

We’re going to step back and look at our schedule.  It probably doesn’t make as much sense to chase the points (at Port Royal) now, so we will look at our options for some weeks and possibly venture to other places when it makes sense.  We’ll still be at Port Royal most of the time but everything that has happened opens up some other options“, Austin shared.

ABR is anxious to get back to the track of course.  The team is currently planning some cool things for this summer’s Kid’s Night at ‘The Speed Palace’ and they are working on some promotions for their primary partner, The Tire Mart in Harrisburg, PA.

If you’re anywhere in the Harrisburg area, stop by and see the folks at The Tire Mart in Colonial Park. Thank them for supporting us.  They are great people, and they can help you with any service you need for your car or truck, not just tires.  Best of all, they are a local business that has been run on family values for over 50 years.  It’s tough to find a place like that these days.  We’re really proud of our relationship with them“, Berry said.

Newlin’s Recovery Progressing; Return Will Bring Changes

Millerstown, PA – April 28, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  Samantha Newlin

It has been nearly six weeks since the crash that sidelined Zach Newlin from the seat of a sprint car.  After a few weeks of progress that netted small steps forward, he has recently taken bigger strides in his recovery.

Despite not being behind the wheel himself, Newlin hasn’t strayed far from the dirt during his break.  He’s been serving as car owner and crew chief for his son Caleb, who is in his second season racing caged karts.  He picked up a win in his first season last year and is looking to add to his trophy collection.

Recovery Update

Although Zach’s physical therapy for balance issues and concussion-like symptoms was helping to a degree, he made the decision to consult a chiropractor about noticeable differences in his neck since the accident.  After an extensive evaluation, Newlin received treated for alignment issues in his neck.  Within hours he knew they were onto something.

I noticed a difference after my first adjustment.  Rapid head movement didn’t affect me quite as much as it had before”, Newlin shared.  He is now receiving both types of treatment and therapy, trying to “get everything firing together“.

I probably need a couple more weeks before I come back.  It would be nice to come back on May 6th at Williams Grove in Dan’s (Mansberger) 358 but we’ll see“, Newlin said.

Seat Change

In other news, Newlin has decided to step away from the Pryde Motorsports 29.

Zach Daddy fans shouldn’t worry though!  Plans are already in the works for Zach to return to 410 sprint car action at Port Royal Speedway in the near future.

Newlin expects to be able to make an official announcement soon. Follow Zach at any of the outlets listed below to keep up to date.

Reinhardt Garners Podium and Top 10 During Busy Week

Lernerville, Sharon and Waynesfield Up Next

New Oxford, PA – April 27, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  Chad Warner Photography

Who doesn’t love to go back home?  Things are always better when you do, right?  Such was the case for Neptune City, NJ native Kyle Reinhardt when he returned to his home state to compete at Bridgeport Motorsports Park last week.  From there, the busy week brought him through the heart of his new home, Pennsylvania, for three races.

4/20:  Invasion of the Posse / Bridgeport Motorsports Park / Swedesboro, NJ

      (27 cars, Qualifying 1st, Heat 3rd, Dash 1st, A-main 2nd)

Quite a few friends, family and others who have watched Reinhardt develop as a driver since the start of his career in NJ, turned out to see one of his rare appearances back on home turf.  He had run well and won races on the old 5/8th mile configuration at Bridgeport, and he didn’t disappoint on the new 4-tenths configuration either.

Reinhardt put together a solid night from start to finish.  Early on it was clear he was among the best in the 27 cars in attendance.  He registered quick time in his group, placed 3rd in his 10-lap heat to solidify a spot in the dash, won the 6-lap dash, and came home with a 2nd place finish in the 30-lap feature event.

The All Star Circuit of Champions will invade Bridgeport later this summer on August 25th and Reinhardt will certainly be one of the favorites when they do.

4/21:  ASCoC / Bloomsburg Fairgrounds Raceway / Bloomsburg, PA

      (28 cars, Qualifying 13th, Heat 4th, A-main 24th)

Reinhardt and the rest of the touring All Stars, 28 cars total, rolled into the new Bloomsburg Fairgrounds Raceway for the first time on Thursday night.

Wheeling his Capitol Renegade / Capitol Custom Coaches & Trailers / Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants / J&J Auto Racing No.91, Reinhardt was the 8th car to go under the clock in qualifying.  He landed about mid-pack, logging the 13th quickest lap in the field.

Reinhardt started 5th in the first of three 8-lap heats.  The top six finishers transferred to the A-main, while the winner and quickest qualifier to transfer would get a spot in the dash.  Kyle used a strong start to jump into the 4th position but was unable to chase down the front trio during the remaining laps.

Starting 12th in the 30-lap main event, Reinhardt was aiming for a top ten finish and a solid points night.  Things went from bad to worse on a restart with ten laps complete when Reinhardt cut a right rear tire entering turn one.  He managed to avoid heavy contact but while in the work area to replace the tire, discovered a brake issue that ended his night with a disappointing 24th place finish officially.

4/22:  ASCoC Tommy Hinnershitz Classic / Williams Grove Speedway / Mechanicsburg, PA

      (41 cars, Qualifying 1st, Heat 4th, Dash 10th, A-main 10th)

Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team were anxious to get back to Williams Grove on Friday night.  They were ready to put Thursday’s disappointment behind them, and Williams Grove was the right place to do it.  Reinhardt had run very well there earlier this season prior to the start of the All Star schedule.

A tough field of 41 cars signed in to compete at the legendary Mechanicsburg, PA half-mile.  The All Star sanctioned event used a five group qualifying format for the large field.

Reinhardt was the eighth and final car to go under the clock in Group D.  He promptly claimed the top spot in the group with a 17.124, which also ended up being good enough to be tied for 5th overall.

After starting 4th in his 8-lap heat race, in which he needed to finish in the top four to transfer to the A-main and secure a spot in the dash, Reinhardt dropped to 5th on the opening lap.  He quickly battled back to 4th on the ensuing lap and held on to the position the rest of the way.

The dash draw didn’t go Reinhardt’s way.  He drew the number nine spot, making it a tall order to obtain a starting spot in the front couple rows.  Reinhardt was running 9th when things went from bad to worse.  The engine in his No.91 gave up as the dash drew to a close, instantly turning the Capitol Renegade pit area into a beehive of activity.

Reinhardt’s team jumped into action, pulled the failed bullet out of their J&J Chassis and dropped in a fresh one to try to make the call for the feature, in which they were scheduled to start 10th.  In just over 15 minutes they accomplished their goal and Reinhardt pushed off to test-fire the car.

During the 30-lap A-main, Reinhardt worked his way up to 8th by the halfway point.  Although he lost a little ground during the second half of the race and crossed the finish line right where he started, it was a welcome top-10, considering what he and the team had been through.

I have to thank my guys.  They worked their asses off to get that done and save our night. Really proud of them.  I also want to thank Cap Henry and the Lane Racing team for jumping in and helping us get it done.  I think we had a top-5 car earlier tonight, but with the dash draw and engine issues, we’re happy to get a good finish and salvage the night“, Reinhardt commented.

4/23:  ASCoC Keith Kauffman Classic / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

      (42 cars, Qualifying 4th, Heat 5th, B-main 4th, A-main 24th)

Rolling into Port Royal Speedway for his fourth race in as many days, Reinhardt was one cut tire away from being on a streak of top-10 finishes.  What the Capitol Renegade team needed was to finish the week with a strong showing at ‘The Speed Palace’, a place that has been challenging for them over the past season or two.

Reinhardt recorded the 4th fastest time in the first of five qualifying groups for the 42 cars on hand, giving him a starting spot inside row two in the first 8-lap heat race of the evening.  After losing 3rd place to Saturday’s overall quick qualifier, Mike Wagner, on the opening lap, Reinhardt worked hard to fend off Brent Marks for the 4th and final transfer spot.  Eventually Marks slipped by, relegating the Capitol Renegade No.91 to a 5th place finish and sending Reinhardt to the B-main.

The struggles continued for Reinhardt, who slid from the pole of the B-main to the 4th and final transfer spot during the 12-lap event.  It wasn’t pretty, but they were in the show.  At least it was a chance to make some changes and see how the car would respond.  Unfortunately, it didn’t.  Reinhardt finished 24th.

It was a solid week for us, minus Port Royal.  We’ve had good speed this year but it’s no secret we’ve been struggling at Port.  We just need to keep trying things to get better there.  We’ll figure it out”, Reinhardt said.

Up Next

Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team will head west for a 3-race swing with the All Star Circuit if Champions.  The series will stop at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, PA on Friday, Sharon Speedway in Hartford, OH on Saturday and Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, OH on Sunday.  Thursday’s previously scheduled event at Bedford Speedway in Bedford, PA has been postponed to a later date due to tire shortages.  The new date has not yet been announced.

Feathers Back on Track with Big Winchester Win

Winchester, VA – April 26, 2022

by Kyle McFadden, Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  Winchester VA Speedway

Trever Feathers and Larry Royston Racing repelled the many struggles that have recently worked against them to reach their highest point of the season to date on Saturday.

Having worked tirelessly to repair his race car in the aftermath of an unfortunate incident last week at Port Royal (Pa.) Speedway, Feathers finished the arduous week in victory lane at Winchester (Va.) Speedway, with the $3,500 Curt Hershey Memorial check in possession.

Feathers swept the night in the No. 20 Larry Royston’s Septic Services / Martins Pumping Service / Feathers & Sons Roofing / Fastenal of Winchester, VA / McFarland Custom Painting & Wall Coverings / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / MB Sports Collectibles / Leggett Engine Research / Coffelt Graphics / Larry Royston Properties / Larry Royston Equipment / Bilstein Shocks / Longhorn Chassis — earning his first win of the season over recent Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series winner Gregg Satterlee.

April 23: Curt Hershey Memorial / Winchester Speedway / Winchester, VA

     (19 cars, Qualifying 1st in group/1st overall, Heat 1st, A-main 1st)

It was a nice shot in the arm for everybody, from Larry to me, to my mom  and dad (Bo), to the guys working on the car. It’s like we all had nothing but energy shots,” Feathers said. “Everybody is amped up and ready to go racing now.”

Up to Saturday, Feathers posted best finishes of fourth in two races in March at Port Royal Speedway, one being a race in which he led laps, but an ill-balanced car couldn’t hold serve at the front of the field.

Nothing stood in the way of Feathers’ pursuit for excellence, as the 29-year-old set overall fast time with a lap of 15.286 seconds and rode that superior speed throughout the night. The Winchester, Va., native topped his heat race by more than four seconds and commanded all 35 laps in the main event at his hometown 3/8-mile clay oval that played right into his approval of slick and methodical racing.

Winning is winning, but it’s always nice to win at home,” Feathers said. “We’re five minutes away. Everybody was there. It makes it nice.”

That’s the racing I love to do,” Feathers added. “I love slow, slick, drive it with the right foot kind of racetracks. Everything played into my favor. We unloaded fairly quick. I wasn’t happy after warmups even though we were fastest in our group. We went to work on it in our heat race and picked up a lot of time. We were pretty fast in our heat race compared to the other heat race winners.

We really didn’t change the car for the feature. Just bolted on harder tires and went to see how we stacked up. We just kind of took off from there. Satterlee kept me honest. He stayed about five to six cars behind me. I had to run 35 no-mistake laps.

On April 10, Satterlee won the Lucas Oil Series race at Port Royal Speedway and subsequently earned a spot in DirtonDirt.com’s Top 25 weekly poll ranking the best Dirt Late Model drivers in the country — a list that Feathers has received votes in the past.

Anytime you have Satterlee behind you, you better run perfect laps,” Feathers said. “He’s going to be there for the taking at any second. Dad was giving me signals, and the (biggest lead) I felt like I had was like half a straightaway before we caught lapped traffic. I tried to back my pace up once we caught the lapped cars for the fact that it was toward the end of the race, and I didn’t want to get into them. Satterlee caught me fairly quickly, and I had to go for it.”

The new Droop Rule enacted over the winter curbed a lot of notes Feathers and crew compiled last year, but Feathers said important gains were made on the race car over the weekend.

I’m having to find a completely new balance for these race cars,” Feathers said. “We want to do what we know was fast last year, but we know it’s not going to work.”

Feathers’ first victory at Winchester since Sept. 7, 2019, was an emotional one, too. Over the winter, Feathers’ best friend Nathan McCory died in a work accident landscaping in the Winchester area.

McCoy meant “much more than working on the race car,” said Feathers, who still grieves the death of his good friend.

If I needed anything done around my house, or something happened around my house I didn’t know about, I called him,” he added. “I depended on him a lot outside of the race car. It was a big hit all the way around, in the garage, in my life period.”

Feathers has many ongoing supporters helping alleviate the pain, although last week Feathers himself made most of the repairs to get the team back on track.

This week, Feathers will try to race Friday’s $12,086-to-win Billy Winn Classic at Bedford (Pa.) Speedway if maintenance goes as scheduled.

I had my hands in everything last week,” Feathers said. “If we had funding, hell yeah, I’d go hire somebody (to help crew) tomorrow, that way it’d just help me out.

I’m going to try my hardest at Bedford, but there’s no guarantees.”

Halligan Earns Top 10 with All Stars

Pleased with Season So Far, Poised for Next Level

Port Royal, PA – April 25, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  Bert WoJo Images

Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway, Jeff Halligan and the Risser Motorsports team had their best opportunity of the young 2022 season to find out how they measure up against some of the best sprint car competition the country has to offer.

At the end of the night, they had their answer.  They were able to load up feeling good about their program after a hard-earned top-10 finish against the Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions.

April 23:  Keith Kauffman Classic / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     (42 cars, Qualifying 1st in group/8th overall, Heat 3rd, Dash 7th, A-main 9th)

Halligan’s Risser Motorsports / TheTreeCenter.com / Victory Auto of Lewistown / EMM Sales & Service / Jake’s Golf Carts, No.45 was one of 42 cars registered to take a shot at the $10,000 prize awaiting the winner of the Keith Kauffman Classic, honoring the winningest driver in the speedway’s history.

The All Star sanctioned event used a five group qualifying format for the large field.  Halligan was the fifth of nine cars in Group B to take time.  On his first of two laps, he laid down a 15.737 that held up and earned him quick time in the group and 8th quickest in the entire field.

We timed well and we’ll be in the dash as long as we can transfer in our heat.  This is our first true night race of the season, so we’ll have to adjust a little.  The things we’ve learned so far this season on the daytime surfaces don’t all translate.  We need to make the right decisions the rest of the night“, Halligan commented after time trials.

The qualifying effort put Halligan 4th in the starting lineup for heat number two.  Under All Star rules, the 8-lap heats are lined up “straight up by time, except for the fastest qualifier in each group/heat, which will invert to the 4th starting position”.   In the five group format, the top four finishers of each heat transfer directly to the A-main, with the heat winner and the quickest transfer from each heat earning a spot in the random draw for their starting position in the dash.

Given the rule, all Halligan needed to do was fend off some stout competition and finish in a transfer position to secure a spot in the dash draw.  He was able get it done, finishing 3rd in the heat race.

During the draw for the ten available starting spots in the 6-lap dash, Halligan pulled pill number eight.  On the opening lap, he was able to charge into the 6th spot but ultimately came home 7th, earning the inside row four starting spot for the night’s finale.

Halligan didn’t get the start he wanted in the 30-lap A-main.  By lap three he had slipped back to the 11th position.  Around the halfway point of the event, the Ephrata (PA) driver started to find a rhythm and make forward progress.  With five laps remaining, he had clawed his way back to 8th in the running order.  When the checkered flag fell on the event, Halligan crossed the line with a hard-earned 9th place finish.

We just missed it a little in the feature tonight.  The positives are that even though the car didn’t feel very good out there and we dropped early, we were able to pass cars later and we were really strong at the end.  We definitely learned some things in the feature.  Overall, the night was a success”, Halligan commented.

Halligan now sits 5th in the season point standings at ‘The Speed Palace’.  A mere 15 points separates a very close battle among the 3rd-5th place teams.

“We’re in a really good spot with everything right now.  Even though we may not have been a top-10 car in the feature, we were able to get a top-10 because we put ourselves in a good position all night long.  Every time you hit the track; it matters.  Every spot you earn matters at the end of the night”, Halligan concluded.

Remember the well-known and often repeated quote by the late author Zig Ziglar?  He said, “Success occurs when opportunity meets preparation.

Halligan and Risser Motorsports have been the model of consistency thus far at Port Royal, but that isn’t a result of just doing the same thing every week.  In today’s sprint car racing, being good on one night is hard, being good on multiple nights is very difficult.  Behind the scenes, Halligan and team have been adjusting, learning, trying new things, and improving.

When you add it all together, the result is a team that it going to get hot at some point.  To fans it may appear as if it happens suddenly, but it will have been because of weeks and months of effort leading up to it.

Up Next

Halligan and the Risser Motorsports team will be back at Port Royal Speedway on Saturday, April 30th for a dual heats, passing points format show.  It will also be camera and autograph night for fans, with the pits being open to all ticketholders for an hour prior to the night’s event.  Stop by to say hello, get a photo and get a close up look at Jeff’s No.45!

Kyle Reinhardt Rallies Saturday, Survives Attica

Looking for Momentum in NJ and PA

Attica, OH – April 19, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  Chris Hockley / WRT SpeedWerx

The kickoff of the Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions points season was delayed one week by Mother Nature.  When the curtain finally went up on the 2022 season, 49 teams showed up to tackle Attica Raceway Park.

Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade / Capitol Custom Coaches & Trailers / Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants / J&J Auto Racing No.91 were among them, ready to dive into their sophomore season on the road with the traveling series.  The northern Ohio facility had been a challenging one for the Neptune City, NJ native and his team last season, but they were back with a clean slate and a new opportunity.

April 15th:  Spring Nationals Night 1 / Attica Raceway Park / Attica, OH

      (49 cars, qualifying 4th, heat 3rd, A-main 19th)

This season, the ASCoC format will only use one dash (6 laps), regardless of car count.  Another change to the format for 2022 is that each heat will line up ‘heads up’ in the order they qualified, with the exception of the quick timer, who will start 4th.

The large car count meant five groups for qualifying (2 laps) and heat races (8 laps).  Reinhardt was the 10th car overall and final car in Group A to take laps under the clock.  He logged the 4th quickest time in the group, slotting him 3rd in the lineup for heat number one.

Reinhardt ‘held serve’, turning in a solid 3rd place finish in his heat race, putting himself into the main event.  In this format, the top four finishers transferred to the A-main, while the heat winner and fastest qualifier to transfer earned a spot in the dash draw.

From his 14th starting spot in the main event, Reinhardt set his sights on his first top-10 at Attica.  It wasn’t to be.  He fought to maintain track position and ultimately slid backward a handful of positions to a 19th place finish.

Had a solid night going for our No.91 but faded in the feature.  We need to get better with our balance at the end of the night“, Reinhardt said.

April 16th:  Spring Nationals Night 2 / Attica Raceway Park / Attica, OH

      (46 cars, qualifying 4th, heat 5th, A-main 15th)

The same format was deployed for the 46 cars that returned for night number two of the Spring Nationals at Attica Raceway Park.  This time Reinhardt found himself in Group D, but again turned in the 4th quickest lap in his group and took his spot inside row two for his heat race.

The heat race didn’t go as smoothly as hoped.  As the field bunched up off turn four for the green, Reinhardt clipped a tire.  Although he executed a full 360 degree spin and never stopped,  series rules call for a caution in that scenario.  As the reason for the yellow, Reinhardt restarted from the rear of the field.  He worked his way back to 6th but fell short of a transfer spot.

A wild 12-lap B-main saw Reinhardt start 5th, fall back to 6th on lap 5, then charge to 3rd by lap 10.  He held on to that transfer spot, one of four, to the checkered flag.

The best news of the weekend for Reinhardt may have come in the 30-lap A-main on Saturday night.  He was able to climb from his 23rd starting spot to 15th, showing the team was making progress solving the puzzle of Attica Raceway Park.

It was an ok weekend for us.  We made both shows, so that’s better than our first trip here last year.  It’s definitely not satisfying though.  We need to race better.  Good news is we moved forward, so we found the track we need to be on.  Glad to get out of Attica in one piece“, Reinhardt shared.

Up Next

Before a 3-race All Star swing through the heart of Pennsylvania, Reinhardt will return to his home state of NJ on Wednesday, April 20th to race at Bridgeport Motorsports Park in their ‘Invasion of the Posse’ 410 sprint car race, where $7,500 will go to the winner.

Reinhardt and the All Star Circuit of Champions will then spend three nights in PA, making stops at Bloomsburg Fair Raceway ($6,000 to win), Williams Grove Speedway ($6,000 to win Tommy Hinnershitz Classic) and Port Royal Speedway ($10,000 to win Keith Kauffman Classic) on April 21st-23rd.

I’m excited to get to go back home to NJ to race.  Bridgeport is a fun track.  Bloomsburg will be new for all of us, and we’ve run really well at The Grove this year, so I’m looking forward to those as well.  I’m ready to get some momentum going“, Reinhardt commented.

Jeff Halligan Ready to Battle All Stars

Phased Approach Keeps Risser Motorsports Team Focused

Port Royal, PA – April 19, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  Chris Hockley / WRT SpeedWerx

 )

Jeff Halligan has had the Risser Motorsports / TheTreeCenter.com / Victory Auto of Lewistown / EMM Sales & Service / Jake’s Golf Carts, No.45 near the front through the first five races at Port Royal Speedway.  The performances have been consistent, but more importantly the less visible details show their program has gotten better from race number one to race number five.  That’s not a coincidence.  There is a plan.

April 16th:  Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     (23 cars, Heat 1st, A-main 5th)

On an unseasonably cool Spring evening with threatening skies, twenty-three 410 sprint car teams filed into Port Royal Speedway for the final tune-up before the All Stars arrive the following week for their first ‘Speed Palace’ event of the 2022 season.

Three 8-lap heats were lined up by pill draw.  While all cars would transfer to the A-main, the handicap system was in use, so the top three spots were the coveted ones, resulting in a total of nine handicapped drivers.  Those drivers would line up for the A-main based on their season points average per race, with the lowest average starting first.  Any handicapped driver who had not competed in a minimum of 3 races at ‘The Speed Palace’ in 2022 would be required to start behind the other handicapped starters.

Halligan started from the pole of heat number three and used the high line to power his way to the lead and survive a heated battle with Dylan Cisney over the first half of the race.  He would pull away in the closing laps and win by 1.5 seconds.

Lining up 6th for the 25-lap main event, Halligan set his sights on another top-5 finish or possibly his first podium of the season.  The objective got a little harder when he didn’t get the start he wanted and slid back a spot in the running order.  For nearly three-quarters of the race, he fought unsuccessfully to get back the ground he lost at the outset.

Over the course of the final eight laps, the Ephrata (PA) resident finally got within striking distance and made his move.  Halligan grabbed 6th away from Gerard McIntyre on the 18th circuit, then claimed 5th from TJ Stutts with five laps remaining.

It was Halligan’s 3rd consecutive top-5 at Port Royal and it moved him into 3rd in the season point standings.

All our work so far this season has been gearing us up for the All Stars next week.  That’s our approach.  We circled certain events on the schedule, like the Kauffman Classic, the Weikert Memorial, PA Speedweek, and the Tuscarora 50.  We use the races leading up to those events to prepare for them.  That doesn’t mean we don’t care about the other races or points.  We’re just trying to be as prepared as we can be for the big ones.  It’s all about being prepared, then executing“, Halligan shared.

Up Next

This Saturday, April 23rd, the first benchmark of the 2022 season will be at hand for Jeff Halligan and the Risser Motorsports team.  They will roll into Port Royal Speedway to take on the Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions in the 7th annual Keith Kauffman Classic with $10,000 on the line for the victor.

We’re right there.  We were able to run a 15.636 in our heat race today, so we know we have the speed to get it done.  This next race (here at Port) is an opportunity for us“, Halligan said, sounding confident and determined.

Season Stats

6 races, 0 wins, 3 top 5s, 4 top 10s

Will Brunson Makes the Leap to 358 Sprints

It’s Never Too Late for New Challenges

Middleburg, PA – April 19, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

Feature Photo Credit:  Chris Hockley / WRT SpeedWerx

Most open wheel fans probably aren’t familiar with the name Will Brunson.  Understandable, given he only has one full season in a sprint car under his belt.  There’s a good chance you’ll hear his name a lot more in the near future though.

Brunson’s journey to the 358 sprint car division hasn’t been a traditional one.  He raced karts when he was young, just like a lot of kids do these days.  Difference is kids often move up through the ranks as quickly as opportunities can be realized.  However, Will stepped away from racing for several years to raise his young children.  It was a higher priority to spend his time and money for them.

About 6 years ago, at nearly 30 years of age, Brunson returned to racing in the Road Runner division at Selinsgrove Speedway.  It served as a way to have balance between family time and being back in the sport that got in his blood when he was watching his father race as a young boy.

As the calendar prepared to turn to 2021, Brunson decided it was time for a change and a new challenge.  He gathered what he needed and went 305 sprint racing, his first venture into sprint car racing.  Through a lot of learning and hard work, Brunson reached the front of the fields by late in his first season, logging some top five finishes in the highly competitive division that typically draws large car counts.

The original plan for 2022 was to come back for more in his 305 sprint and continue to build that program.  However, opportunity knocked, and Brunson opened the door again.

I had an opportunity to buy this 358 operation.  My original plan was to fix it up and sell it to make some cash to build our 305 program.  After looking at the numbers, considering what it costs to race each car and factoring in what we could earn, plus what each operation was worth, I decided to race it and sell our 305 stuff.  Why not, right?“, Brunson grinned.

April 2nd:  Lincoln Speedway / Abbottstown, PA

     (30 cars, Heat 4th, A-main 19th)

Given Brunson doesn’t seem to be afraid to jump into the deep end of the pool, it was only appropriate that his pill draw on his first night of competition placed him on the pole of his heat race at Lincoln Speedway where 30 cars had shown up for their 358 sprint season opener.

Some newcomers would have opted to start in the back of the field in that situation, but Will went for it.  He led the first five laps of the 10-lap heat and eventually finished 4th, locking himself directly into the feature event.

In the 20-lap A-main Brunson started 14th and came home 19th in his Pheasant Funeral Home / Selinsgrove Apartments / Tom Tice Powder Coating / The Real Diehl Excavating / HorstCraft Millworks / Hackenburg’s Plumbing & Heating / Apache Tree Service / DL Martin Trucking / Zook’s Septic Services / Smitty’s Tree Service / Romig Welding / Good’s Construction / Bud Godek Auto Body / Affordable Fuels / CMC Alignment Shop, Brunson Racing No.8.

April 9th:  Open Wheel Madness / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     (27 cars, Heat 7th, B-main 3rd, A-main 20th)

The following week, Brunson opted to travel to Port Royal Speedway to toss his 358 sprint car into the ring against the URC 360 sprint cars.  Three 8-lap heat races were lined up for the 27 teams entered.  The Middleburg, PA resident started 7th in the second heat, needing to gain only one spot to transfer directly to the A-main.

Although he wasn’t able to get it done through the heat race, Will did put his No.8 in the show by finishing 3rd in the B-main.  Brunson then went on to start 21st and finish 20th in the 25-lap URC A-main.

April 16th:  Lincoln Speedway / Abbottstown, PA

     (31 cars, Heat 6th, B-main 2nd, A-main 22nd)

This past weekend, Brunson returned to Lincoln Speedway along with 30 other cars.  Once again, the format consisted of four 10-lap heats with the top five finishers transferring directly to the main event.  The top two finishers would be handicapped to the front of the starting lineup.

Will was able to climb from 8th to 6th in his heat race but fell one spot short of locking into the A-main.  However, a solid 2nd place effort in the B-main put him in the show again.  Unfortunately, just a few laps into the 20-lap feature, when the caution lights flashed on, Brunson lifted off the throttle as he entered the corner.  The result:  the cushion grabbed him and didn’t let go.  The resulting tumble ended his night 22nd in the books.

Wrap Up

It’s worth highlighting that despite never turning a lap in a 358 sprint car until he entered competition for the first time at Lincoln Speedway on April 2nd, Brunson has made the A-main each time out.  The finishes may not have been flashy but making every show and getting as much seat time as possible is a win for Will and Brunson Racing.

I’m actually more comfortable in the 358 (than the 305) in some ways.  Having more power allows you to get out of trouble easier.  I expect to learn and build throughout the season.  That’s what we did last year in the 305.  Near the end of last year, we were getting some top 5’s.  I definitely believe we can do that again in the 358 this year.  I think we can get a win “, Brunson shared.

Nobody tackles racing on their own.  There are always a lot of folks helping make it all happen.  There’s the crew, marketing partners and supporters who bring whatever they can to the table.  Brunson Racing is no different.

I have a lot of people to thank who make it possible for me to do this.  I couldn’t do this without my crew:  Cam, Noah, Josh and everyone who pitches in at the shop and at the track.  I want to give a shout out to Bill who provides the truck to get us to the track, and of course to all our partners for everything they do”, Brunson said.

Up Next

Brunson Racing is off this coming weekend, then will return to Lincoln Speedway on Saturday, April 30th, followed by Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, May 6th.

Reinhardt Wraps Up Early Season in PA with Another Top 10

Capitol Renegade Team Primed for Friday All Star Opener

Abbottstown, PA – April 13, 2022

by Addicted2Dirt PR & Media Management

 )

Kyle Reinhardt wrapped up his ‘preseason’ outings with a top-10 run at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night in the Weldon Sterner Memorial aboard his familiar Capitol Renegade / Capitol Custom Coaches & Trailers / Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants / J&J Auto Racing No.91.

It’s not really fair to refer to a string of tough races in Central PA as ‘preseason’.  Given the level of competition present, every race is a dogfight.  It was preseason in a sense though for Reinhardt, as he and his team have been working for the past few weeks to sharpen themselves and their equipment for their regular season with the Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions, which kicks off Friday, April 15th at Attica Raceway Park in Ohio.

April 9:  Weldon Sterner Memorial / Lincoln Speedway / Abbottstown, PA

      (43 cars, qualifying 2nd, heat 3rd, A-main 10th)

The lucrative Weldon Sterner Memorial event at Lincoln Speedway drew a quality field of 43 cars to compete for the $6,900 winner’s take.  Kyle Reinhardt was slotted 17th overall, part of group 1, for time trials.  He ripped off a lap of 13.851 to take the top spot on the chart.  Five cars later, Danny Dietrich knocked him from his perch, taking quick time by a mere 0.084 seconds.

The PA Speedweek format was in place for the night’s action, so four 10-lap heats were lined up with the four best times in each inverted for the start.  The top five from each race would transfer to the A-main, with two cars from each heat going to the redraw:  the winner and the fastest timer who transferred.

Reinhardt was able to advance from his number four starting spot to a 3rd place finish, thus transferring and putting himself in the redraw.  The results of the redraw made Reinhardt’s night a little tougher when he pulled the 8th starting spot.

In the 35-lap feature event, Reinhardt moved into 7th at the drop of the green, but he slid backwards to 9th by the time the race had reached the halfway point.  He held his ground there until the final lap when Matt Campbell slipped by, relegating the Neptune City, NJ native to a 10th place finish.

Time trials were something we definitely wanted to improve on from last year, so I feel like we’ve done that so far.  We’ve been timing really well and have had good speed early in the night.  Now we need to work on making the right decisions later in the night, so we can finish as well as we start“, Reinhardt explained.

Lincoln Speedway has been a challenging venue for Reinhardt in the past, so while the finish may have been a few spots shy of the goal Saturday night, it was a solid step forward for him and his team.  It also establishes a trend in the right direction when coupled with his 6th place finish there last August in the Kramer Klash with the All Stars.

Up Next

Reinhardt finally gets to hit the road this week.  The team will travel to Attica Raceway Park in Ohio to begin their Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions campaign.  The season launches there with shows on both Friday and Saturday, April 15th-16th.

We struggled at Attica last year but I’m looking forward to kicking off our All Star season there.  I’d like to get a top-10 there.  We’re capable of it.  We just need to get a good lap down to start the night and we’ll be ok.  It’s a different type of track than we have been running so far this year, but a lot of the things we’ve improved will translate“, Reinhardt explained.

Following the 2-day All Star opener, Reinhardt will have the opportunity to return to his home state of NJ to compete in the special ‘Invasion of the Posse’ 410 sprint car show at Bridgeport Motorsports Park on Tuesday, April 19th.

Season Stats

5 races, 0 wins, 2 top 5’s, 3 top 10’s, 5 top 15’s

Berry Digs Out of Early Hole to Make Lucas Oil Event

Positives Emerge from Challenging Day

Port Royal, PA – April 12, 2022

If you’re competing against the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, you can’t have anything go wrong.  You can’t make a mistake.  The field is too deep to back your way into the finale.

Five minutes into Austin Berry’s day at Port Royal Speedway, a part of him had to be thinking “let’s just load up, we’re done”.  Why?  As he took to the track for his hot lap session, something went wrong mechanically.  It wasn’t clear exactly what at first, but back in the pits the diagnosis was a blown power steering line.

With only minutes to get in line for their spot in time trials, the Austin Berry Racing team went into high gear.  What likely appeared to some to be chaos was actually an organized, high speed repair involving at least a half-dozen crew members.  They did miss their spot in line, but they made it in time to join the end of the line and get the opportunity to run one lap under the clock.  The lap, 15th quickest in group two, wasn’t up to their standards but at least they still had a chance to get in the show, even if it was slim.

April 10:  River Valley 40 / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

       (37 cars, Qualifying 15th, Heat 7th, B-main 4th, A-main 20th)

Earlier that day the Central Pennsylvania high-banked half-mile track had rain, sleet and snow flurries blowing across its surface.  Against the odds, the afternoon brought 37 super late models, some moments of sunshine, and racing.

Following Berry’s scramble to get a qualifying lap in the books, he regrouped and rolled out 8th for the fourth and final 8-lap heat race.  The top four finishers would transfer directly to the A-main, while the remainder of the field would race for one of three final transfer spots in a B-main.  Berry managed to advance as far as 6th briefly but after a torrid battle with Garrett Alberson and Dylan Yoder, Berry settled for a 7th place finish.

It’s too bad we were buried deep in the starting lineup for that race because of our earlier issue.  That was one of the best handling cars I’ve ever had here“, Berry said as he climbed out of The Tire Mart / JDS Racing / Berry’s Siding & Seamless Gutter / Locust Hill Custom Butcher Shop / Nathan Berry Beef Farm / A&C Racing Engines / Swift Springs / Kevin Nouse Designs – K1 Race Gear / Addicted2DirtPR.com / Penske Racing Shocks / Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic / DirtCarLifts / VP Racing Fuels / Rocket Chassis XR1 No.86.

Austin Berry was three spots away from a major recovery for his day.  If he could move from his 6th starting spot in the 10-lap B-main into the top three, he could still put his team in the show after an unfortunate start to their day.  He wasted no time charging into 4th by lap two.  He then set his sights on Hudson O’Neal, who held down the 3rd and final transfer position.  Berry worked high and low trying to find a way to get to O’Neal.  As the checkered flag fell on the event, Austin found himself just 0.5 seconds out of that 3rd and final transfer spot.

All the hard work had not all been fruitless though.  They found themselves in position to earn the track provisional into the evening’s finale.  The track provisional is awarded to the team highest in the speedway’s season point standings that did not transfer into the feature event.  The team’s entire season of hard work that had propelled them into 4th place in the season standings, paid off in that moment.

First off, I have to give a huge thank you to my crew.  How they diagnosed the issue, removed the power steering line, installed a new line, and got me rolling again in time to take a qualifying lap is amazing to me.  That was a significant effort to execute in a handful of minutes.  They get the credit for keeping us in the game today.  I also have to give a shout out to Hayes Mattern who let us borrow his spare, new power steering line.  Can’t thank him enough“, an appreciative Berry said.

Berry’s 40-lap A-main run was thankfully uneventful.  Starting at the back of the 26 car field, he finished off his day with a solid effort, coming home 20th.   He noted afterward he was encouraged that the car didn’t drop off over the course of the race, which was a longer one than they normally get to run.

I feel pretty good.  We overcame a lot today.  Along with the blown line, after the B-main we discovered issues with two (spark) plug wires.  Maybe we wouldn’t have even needed the provisional if I would have had all eight (cylinders)”, Berry said with a shrug and a grin.

I give our day a ‘B’.  We learned a lot about what we are capable of.  We moved forward every time we hit the track and we passed some of the best in the business.  I learn a lot racing with these guys“.

Berry concluded his statements by saying, “Two years ago we would not have even come to this race.  Now our program is at a point where we come and believe we can qualify.  Leaving here today, I know we belong.  We can compete.
