Finishes Don’t Tell the Story of How Far the 358 Rookie Has Come

Kyle Keen closed out the month of June by tackling two of Pennsylvania’s most notable and toughest tracks in the Fine Line Auto Body / Keen Parts / Doubling Gap Ranch / Shetron Auction & Equipment, LLC. / Wicked Dog Grille / Heishman Racing Fuels / Wicked Cushion / DL Lehman Construction, LLC. / GearHead Coffee / Jeremy Zarfos Photography / Coyle’s Lawn Maintenance / One Nine Design, Kyle Keen Motorsports No.17k.

 

The pair of races took the team to Williams Grove Speedway and Port Royal Speedway where they would be on the card as part of the Pennsylvania Speedweek 410 sprint car series.  The outcome of both nights showed the 358 sprint car rookie is on the cusp of bigger things.  More experience will always be a plus, and that will come with time, but the biggest missing element right now is a little bit of luck.  

 

June 24th:  Williams Grove Speedway / Mechanicsburg, PA

     [30 cars, Heat 1st (1), A-main 22nd (3)]

 

Thirty 358 sprint car teams signed in at ‘The Grove’ on Friday night, June 24th.  The field was split into three, 10-car heat races using a pill draw.  From each of the 8-lap qualifying races, the top six finishers would advance to the A-main, with the top four earning a spot in the redraw that would set the top twelve starting spots for the 20-lap finale.

 

Kyle Keen’s first bit of good fortune on the night came in the form of drawing the pole for the third heat race.  He was able to capitalize on the opportunity and capture the win, grabbing his ticket to the redraw in the process.

 

Keen had one more moment of good fortune when the redraw turned up the 3rd starting spot for the main event.  Unfortunately, that’s where his luck ran out for the night.  The race leader had a mechanical issue on the opening lap and slowed rapidly, leaving the Carlisle, PA resident no time to react.

 

Keen made contact with the right rear of the disabled car, lifting his front end skyward and bringing it back down hard on the track surface.  Sensing something was off, he took the car pit-side and retired from the event.  He was credited with a 22nd place finish.

 

We were strong to start the night.  The heat win was rejuvenating.  It was definitely a confidence builder.  I felt like we showed what we are capable of.  We had nice speed and a good pace.”, Keen said.

 

“When the leader broke in front of me on the first lap of the feature, I had nowhere to go and climbed his right rear.  When the car came back down, I thought something was broken.  I pulled into the pits, but everything was fine.  It’s been tough sledding at the Grove so far, but we will get through this.  We are finally getting racy.  I’m excited for the next race there already.

 

June 29th:  URC / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     [30 cars, Heat 6th (6), A-main 17th (16)]

 

The URC sprint cars joined the PA Speedweek 410 sprint car program at Port Royal Speedway for a midweek special at the Juniata County fairgrounds half-mile.  Taking advantage of an opportunity for seat time, Kyle Keen Motorsports joined the quality field of 30 cars.

 

The format in play for the event included three 10-lap heat races lined up by a pill draw, a B-main and a 25-lap A-main.  Each heat race would send the top six finishers directly to the main event, but only the top three would earn a spot in the redraw.

 

Keen started and finished 6th in an uneventful heat number one.  He may have missed the redraw, but the No.17k 358 sprint car was in the show right alongside the URC 360’s.

 

From his 16th starting spot in the night’s finale, Keen had to work hard for every position he gained.  Through the first twenty laps there was rarely a moment when he was not side by side with another competitor.

 

He was getting the job done though.  By lap eleven Keen had cracked the top ten.  Three laps later he had clawed his way into the 8th position.  The event was slowed numerous times by cautions, but he survived  the restarts and continued his quest.

 

A top five finish didn’t seem far-fetched given Keen’s steady climb, but inside the final few circuits, the motor began to stumble.  On the final restart with one lap remaining, it gave up and Keen drifted to the inside wall, out of fuel just a half mile short of a top-10 run in his first career URC start.  Instead, the rundown shows a disappointing 17th.

 

I’m frustrated with the way the amount of caution laps we ran were handled, but it is what it is.  We will move on to the next one.“, Keen commented.

 

“Our Hammaker 358 was running super strong against a very tough field of 360’s. I want to say thanks to my team for getting the car to the track while I was at work so we could race. I’m proud of the speed we have shown recently.  I had a fun time racing Port, certainly a badass, fast racetrack.”

Kyle Reinhardt Highlights Challenging Ohio Speedweek with Top 10 at Sharon

Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade / Capitol Custom Coaches & Trailers / Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants / J&J Auto Racing No.91 team came into their second Ohio Speedweek more prepared than they were for their first shot at it in 2021.

 

The grind delivered by the nine day racing extravaganza is tough for a team even if everything goes well.  Add in issues and it gets exponentially tougher.  Ohio Speedweek is a true test of what a team is made of.  Just to survive is an accomplishment.

On night one of the Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions 2022 Ohio Sprint Speedweek at Attica Raceway Park, Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade No.91 team battled engine issues and missed the main event.  

 

Then came night two at Fremont Speedway.  A subpar qualifying effort left the team with an uphill climb just to make the show.  Reinhardt managed to wheel his way into the show through the B-main and came home 20th in the A-main.

 

It wasn’t the confidence-building start to the series that Reinhardt and his team wanted, but in the sport of sprint car racing there will be nights like those.  The only answer is to keep working, keep digging.

 

Back at Fremont Speedway again for night three, things got off to a good start.  Reinhardt timed quickest in his group and transferred to the feature event through his heat, giving him a spot in the dash.  After earning the 4th starting spot for the 30-lap feature A-main, the Neptune City, NJ native wheeled his way into 3rd on the opening lap and appeared poised for a podium finish to turn his week around.

 

Unfortunately, just after Reinhardt navigated his way into 2nd during lap seven, the opportunity slipped away when he got over the top edge of the racetrack.  He found himself in the work area soon after.  He rejoined the field but had to settle for 23rd place finish.

 

Reinhardt got night four off on the right foot at Wayne County Speedway by timing second quick in his group and grabbing the victory in his heat race.  Things changed at that point.  The team battled a tight race car the remainder of the night, sliding from 5th to 9th in the 6-lap dash and from 9th to 18th in the 25-lap A-main, resulting in a disappointing end to what started out as a promising night.

 

The halfway point of the week, night five, brought the traveling caravan to Sharon Speedway in eastern Ohio.  Reinhardt missed the transfer in his heat race by one spot and was relegated to the B-main but was able to make his way into the A-main with a 2nd place finish in the last chance race.

 

One of the highlights of the week was Reinhardt’s charge from 22nd to 10th during the 30-lap main event.  The effort earned Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team the Hard Charger award for the night.

 

Night six at Atomic Speedway started off with Reinhardt looking strong out of the gate.  He recorded the quickest time in his group for the second time during Speedweek.  The lap was good enough for third best of the entire 43 car field.  Things didn’t go quite according to plan after that.  He was unable to transfer through his heat, losing a spot in the dash and ending up in the B-main instead.  Reinhardt put his No.91 in the main event at Atomic with a second place finish in the B-main, then raced from 22nd to 15th in the 30-lap finale.

 

Waynesfield Raceway Park was the site of the seventh consecutive night of racing during Ohio Speedweek.  While running in 3rd during his heat race, Kyle Reinhardt and another competitor made contact on the home stretch, sending the No.91 spinning and changing the course of the Capitol Renegade team’s night.  Reinhardt restarted at the back and recovered to a 5th place finish to get into the A-main but was only able to climb to a 15th place finish in the 30-lap finale.

 

Reinhardt was behind the eight ball after qualifying on night eight at Limaland Motorsports Park.  His eighth best time in his group placed him outside row four for his heat race.  A strong run in that 8-lap heat race turned his night around.  He wheeled his J&J Auto Racing No.91 around the high side of the quarter-mile bullring, charging from 8th to 3rd on the slick, dusty surface.  In the 25-lap A-main, Reinhardt came home 13th and earned the All Stars’ Perseverance Award for the effort of the entire Capitol Renegade team.

 

The 9-night Ohio Speedweek finale took place in southern Ohio at Portsmouth Raceway Park, a high-banked, fast 3/8-mile track.  Reinhardt registered the 3rd best lap in his group and 10th quickest in the entire 45 car field.  He proceeded to wheel his Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants No.91 to a 3rd place finish in heat number one and a 12th place finish in the final A-main of the series.

 

We just couldn’t seem to catch a break.  We were really good a few nights but couldn’t capitalize.  Other nights we were off a little and had to fight just to run mid-pack.“, Reinhardt commented.

 

While the results of their Speedweek didn’t meet the Capitol Renegade team’s expectations and goals, there were bright spots to build on, including a consistent stretch of five top 15 finishes over the final five night.  In 2021, the team only managed two top-15’s and didn’t crack the top ten, so there was progress.  A couple missed opportunities kept the stats from looking better during the 2022 edition of the summer tradition.

 

We only missed one show and that was due to an engine issue.  The fields are big at these shows and it’s not easy to qualify, so it’s a positive to make 8 of 9, but we just aren’t running as well as we know we can.  We are going to regroup and be ready when the All Star schedule resumes.”

 

Reinhardt was alluding to the fact that the Capitol Renegade team has changed their original plan to run at least part of Pennsylvania Speedweek.  Instead, the No.91 will sit out due to engine issues and prepare for the second half of the tour schedule.

 

Up Next

 

The 31st Annual Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup at Lernerville Speedway will be the next event on the schedule for Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team.  The July 7th event will pay an attractive sum of $25,000 to the victor.

 

Reinhardt will get a little seat time during PA Speedweek though.  He will fill the seat of John Westbrook’s 1W for four events.  He will race both stops at Williams Grove Speedway, plus BAPS Motor Speedway and Hagerstown Speedway.  Reinhardt wheeled Westbrook’s 360 sprint car a few years ago and the pair had a lot of success, winning numerous races and claiming the Selinsgrove Speedway championship.

Halligan Remains Hot; Records Two Podium Finishes Over the Weekend in PA

Busy PA Speedweek Schedule on Tap for Risser Motorsports Team

Jeff Halligan and the Risser Motorsports team decided to make the most of their final PA Speedweek preparation opportunities last weekend.  The team elected to compete at both Williams Grove Speedway and Port Royal Speedway.  Both outings turned out to be very productive, collecting good notes and two podium finishes in the process.

 

June 17:  Williams Grove Speedway / Mechanicsburg, PA

    [21 cars, Heat 1st (1), A-main 3rd (1)]

 

A pill draw set the lineups for the three heat races for the 21 cars on hand at Williams Grove Speedway Friday night.  Jeff Halligan landed the pole for the first 10-lap qualifying race, and he took full advantage.  Halligan powered away from the field, keeping a firm grasp on the top spot throughout and winning by just over 4 seconds in the Risser Motorsports / TheTreeCenter.com / Victory Auto of Lewistown / EMM Sales & Service / Jake’s Golf Carts, No.45.

 

The 25-lap A-main lineup was determined by the track’s handicapping system, which worked in Halligan’s favor and provided him with the point position for the race.

 

Lucas Wolfe got out in front of Halligan on the opening lap and led the event through the first five circuits before Halligan wrestled the top spot away.  

 

The Ephrata, PA driver settled in comfortably in front, running the high side of the speedway and was not seriously challenged for the next ten laps.  As the race entered the final phase, Billy Dietrich found the rubber on the bottom and slipped by Halligan.

 

Moments later, Chase Dietz was able to get by both of them and went on to win, while Halligan settled for a 3rd place finish.

 

I felt really good.  The best I have felt all year here (at Williams Grove) We came here to get some final Speedweek prep.  It probably sounds odd, but things we learn here can actually help us at Lincoln too.“, Halligan shared.

 

Honestly, I should have won that race.  I was really good up top while I was leading, so I wasn’t searching for a better line, but the low groove took rubber, and I didn’t move down quick enough.

 

June 18:  Open Wheel Madness II / Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     [25 cars, Heat 1st (2), A-main 3rd (6)]

 

Saturday night’s $5,000 to win 410 sprint car race at Port Royal Speedway drew a field of 25 teams.

 

Jeff Halligan started heat number two from outside the front row and immediately grabbed the lead from rookie Nick Sweigert.  By the second trip around the Juniata County half-mile, Anthony Macri had slid his way into 2nd and began his pursuit of the top spot.

 

Halligan and Macri put on an entertaining battle, exchanging crossover moves on occasion during the 8-lap heat race.  Halligan was up to the challenge and held off Macri for the win by 0.813 seconds.

 

From his 6th starting spot in the 25-lap A-main, Jeff Halligan knew he would have to ‘crack the whip’ from the drop of the green.  Beside him was former track champion, Mike Wagner, and behind him in the 4th row were his two strongest competitors thus far during the 2022 season, Logan Wagner and Anthony Macri.

 

Halligan got the start he needed, climbing into the 3rd position by lap two.  By lap nine he had powered his way into the 2nd spot and set his sights on the No.55 of Mike Wagner.

 

Over the next ten laps, Macri and Logan Wagner entered the fray.  An intense battle among the top three unfolded and Halligan held tough, still running 2nd to Macri when the caution lights flashed on with seven laps remaining.

 

On the ensuing restart, Logan Wagner slipped into 2nd when he went to the middle in turn one, just above Macri who was hugging the bottom rail and under Halligan who had taken the high line.

 

The three went all out the final five laps but crossed the finish line with no further position changes, giving Jeff Halligan his second 3rd place finish in as many nights.

 

I was really good until that last caution.  We just missed something and didn’t quite have what we needed in the closing laps.“, Halligan commented.

 

One of our goals this season was to be consistent with two different cars, so a couple weeks ago we pulled out a second Panther Frameworx chassis.  We’re getting it dialed in now, so I feel like we have accomplished that goal.

 

Halligan has amassed some pretty solid stats so far this season, logging 12 top-10’s in 19 outings, including one victory thus far.

 

We’ve been fast, consistent and near the front all year.  We just have to keep knocking on the door.  If we keep doing that, it’ll open once in a while.“, Halligan concluded.

Kyle Keen Competitive in Young 358 Sprint Career

Kyle Keen returned to action over the weekend with a double-dip on Friday and Saturday night after three weeks on the sideline for repairs following a crash at Williams Grove and a subsequent illness.

 

The 2022 newcomer to the 358 sprint car division knows he needs to race to learn and improve, so he was itching to get back in the seat and get back to building his program.

I don’t have many races under my belt, so we’re trying to run a few different tracks.  I think that will help me learn to drive these things and improve myself behind the wheel quicker than sticking to one place all year.“, Keen said.

 

The field was divided into three, 8-lap heats, which were lined up by a pill draw.  The top six finishers would transfer directly to the A-main, but only the top four finishers would make the redraw for a shot at one of the top twelve starting spots.

 

Kyle Keen started 6th, within striking distance of a redraw spot, in heat number two.  The start ended up making his job harder.  Keen found himself in 8th after the first circuit, but he went to work and found his rhythm.  

 

Lap by lap, Keen worked his way forward again.  By lap four he had reached the 5th position and went to work on securing a top four finish.  He was able to finally slip by Travis Scott on the final lap and claim a 4th place finish.

 

The redraw wasn’t very friendly to Keen.  He pulled the 11th starting spot for the 25-lap Summer Series feature event.  Unfortunately, eight laps into the event Keen clipped the inside guard rail and brought an end to his night.

 

I was reeling in 8th place, and he went to the top going into (turn) one, so I dove low and just misjudged it by inches and touched the rail.  It was just enough to spin the car and bend the front axle.“, a disappointed Keen shared.

 

“We had a really good car tonight.  We were fast and passing cars.  I’m happy about that, especially since it was my first 358 A-main here.  I’m just disappointed with how it ended.

 

June 11th:  Fallen Firefighter’s Night / Lincoln Speedway / Abbottstown, PA

    [29 cars, Heat 2nd (1), A-main 7th (3)]

 

Saturday night, Lincoln Speedway presented its annual Fallen Firefighter’s Night.  The event drew a field of 29 358 sprint cars.  Per track rules, the field was divided into four 10-lap heat races.  The top five finishers from each would move directly to the A-main, while only the top two would have their starting position handicapped for the night’s main event.

 

“I’m happy we are able to be here to honor Jerome Guise of Engine 36 who passed away in the line of duty on March 9, 2020, for fallen firefighters’ night.  I want to say ‘thank you’ to all our first responders!

 

Kyle Keen’s night started with a favorable pill draw that put him on the pole for the fourth heat.  Veteran Jeff Rohrbaugh got the better start from the outside front row position and grabbed the early lead.  Keen held a firm grasp on 2nd throughout the event but was never able to mount a challenge for the win.  He did however, secure a handicap spot.

 

Keen rolled to the green in the 20-lap feature from inside row two, looking to snag his first top five of the season.  The Carlisle, PA native raced solidly inside the top five through the first nine laps, then slipped to 6th during the middle stages of the race.  

 

As the A-main drew to a conclusion, Keen fell one more spot.  The 7th place finish wasn’t up to Keen’s expectations for himself, but it was another solid top-10 for the wheelman who has yet to reach double-digits in 358 race experience.

 

It’s not really the finish I wanted but I think we continue to get better each time we go out. Slowly but surely.  We missed the setup a bit and I don’t have much slick track experience, so I just couldn’t make up for what the car couldn’t do.”, Keen commented.

 

I’m happy we got our second top-10 with the 358’s, but disappointed we went backwards. A good pill draw certainly helped our night. When you want to win as bad as I do, it’s always a tough pill to swallow going backwards, especially when you’re racing with guys who have so much experience.

 

I’m just not entirely comfortable with the car at Lincoln yet, but we will keep grinding away at it and I’ll be working on my driving too, which certainly needs to keep improving.  With as little experience as I have as a driver in a sprint car, it feels good to be finishing inside the top 10 and being competitive. You either win or you learn, and tonight we had to learn.“, Keen concluded.

Kyle Keen Motorsports will take the upcoming weekend off, then will return to action Friday, June 24th when the 358 sprint cars join the 410 Sprint cars for the PA Speedweek opener at Williams Grove Speedway.

 

During Speedweek, the team will also make its way to Port Royal Speedway on Wednesday, June 29th to compete with the URC 360 sprint cars at ‘The Speed Palace’.

Jeff Halligan Nets Tenth Top-10 of 2022 Season

Jeff Halligan and the Risser Motorsports team have been steadily getting better and better as the season has unfolded.  As the team has shared before, their approach to the season has been a phased one.  With key races circled on the calendar, each race leading up to the milestone events is an opportunity to prepare, improve and be ready for the test.

 

The most recent marked event on the team’s calendar was the Bob Weikert Memorial, in which the team earned a podium finish against the All Star Circuit of Champions.   Following that, the team turned their focus to Pennsylvania Speedweek, which begins in late June.  Halligan kicked off the team’s month of June and Speedweek preparation by winning at Port Royal Speedway in the Risser Motorsports / TheTreeCenter.com / Victory Auto of Lewistown / EMM Sales & Service / Jake’s Golf Carts, No.45.

 

June 11th:  Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

     [21 cars, Heat 1st (1), A-main 9th (9)]

 

Halligan started on the pole of the last of three 8-lap heats for the 21 cars on hand.  He never gave the rest of the field a chance to take a shot at him.  The Ephrata, PA wheelman dominated the heat, winning by 4.076 seconds over Michael Walter II and Mike Wagner.  Trenton Sheaffer and Logan Wagner rounded out the top five.

 

The starting lineup for the 25-lap feature event was set using a handicapping format, which placed Halligan on the inside of row five as the highest point man in the season standings to record a top three finish in the heat races.

 

Although Halligan has made a habit of advancing in nearly every race he has competed in at the fairgrounds half-mile in Port Royal this season, on this night he wasn’t able to move forward during the A-main.

 

We were a couple adjustments away from passing cars.  I was good in (turns) one and two, and I could get runs on guys, but I just couldn’t get through (turns) three and four the way I needed to.“, Halligan shared.

 

We’ve been really consistent with a lot of top-10’s, so I’m definitely happy about that.  Now we’re aiming for top-5’s on a regular basis.”

Jeff Halligan will be back at Port Royal Speedway on Saturday night, June 18th for Open Wheel Madness II, featuring the ‘USAC Eastern Blast’ USAC National Sprint Cars racing for $6,000, USAC Silver Crown teams competing for $8,000, & the 410 winged sprint cars  chasing a top prize of $5,000.

 

With no racing slated at Port Royal on June 25th, the event will be the final chance for Halligan and crew chief Kyle Defibaugh to fine tune the Risser Motorsports No.45 before PA Speedweek rolls into ‘The Speed Palace’ on Wednesday, June 29th.  The team plans to compete in several Speedweek events.  More details will be released soon.

Henderson Looking Toward World of Outlaws Visit to Knoxville Following a Frustrating Weekend

Justin Henderson scored a weekend best eighth-place finish as part of a doubleheader at Knoxville Raceway last Saturday night. The top ten finish was a welcomed sight after a lap one wreck resulted in a 24th place finish during the first feature event of the night.

 

Plans to compete during the weekend at Huset’s Speedway fell through after a rainstorm hit the Speedway on Sunday and postponed the event.

 

“I really thought we had a car capable of winning in the first one and we probably would have been on the podium in feature two if not for that wreck,” said Henderson. “We didn’t get to do near as much racing as we’d hoped this weekend, but to be able to bring home a top ten in a banged up car lessons the sting a little bit.”

 

Henderson kicked off the night at Knoxville by timing in ninth quickest out of 35 cars in attendance in time trials with a fastest lap of 15.280 seconds. He then advanced two positions in a heat race to finish in second and earned a spot in the feature re-draw as a result.

 

After a lengthy rain delay at the track, Henderson lined up from the outside second row for the A-main and was feeling confident about his chances of ending up in victory lane. However, any thoughts of scoring his first win of the 2022 racing season came to a screeching halt in turn’s three and four on the opening circuit. 

 

While running in the third position, the second place driver got turned around in front of him and left him with nowhere to go. He made heavy contact with the spinning car and ended up getting into the outside guardrail as a result. The team surveyed the damage and opted to get the car ready for the make-up feature instead of heading back out with a damaged racecar. As a result, he was credited with finishing 24th.

 

“When he started spinning, I wanted to get around him quickly to be able to keep going and I thought he was actually going to save it,” he said. “I just barely caught him and when it backed into the fence the car was in pretty rough shape. Right away our main focus was to be ready for the second feature and not lose too many points sitting in the trailer.”

 

The team made repairs to the car and Henderson was able to line up for the make-up feature event from the seventh position. As a result of the damage sustained in the first feature event, Henderson struggled with the handling of the car and he managed to bring the car home in one piece with an eighth-place finish. The top ten finish was the ninth of the season for Henderson aboard the Sandvig Motorsports No. 7.

 

“We got the car in good enough shape to get back on track, but it was a monster to handle,” said Henderson. “I fell back to 14th actually, but I tried something really unorthodox to make the car feel half decent and we actually managed to get going and ended up eighth.”

 

Next up for Henderson and Sandvig will be a pair of $10,000-to-win World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car starts on Friday and Saturday at Knoxville before they turn their attention to defending their points lead on Sunday at Huset’s Speedway.

 

With the added money on the line and the uptick in competition with the Outlaws in town, Henderson is hoping the speed they have had all season to start the night at Knoxville will pay off when it counts.

 

“We’re excited to compete with the Outlaws and we’ll be doing it with a new car after last weekend’s wreck,” said Henderson. “I hate to lose a car that we have had so much success in, but this one is good too and we’re ready to let her rip. We’ve been fast all season to start the night at Knoxville and the way the Outlaw format works you’ve got to be fast right off the trailer and I’m hopeful we can break through with a win or a podium and forget about last weekend.”

Reinhardt Has Attica and Atomic on Tap This Weekend as Final Tune-up for Ohio Speedweek

Port Royal Struggles Continue at Weikert Memorial

Kyle Reinhardt and his Capitol Renegade team have shown a lot of progress on the bullrings around the Midwest so far this season, but one mystery they haven’t been able to solve the past couple seasons is the always slick Port Royal Speedway.

 

When they unloaded the Capitol Renegade / Capitol Custom Coaches & Trailers / Champion Hi-Tech Lubricants / J&J Auto Racing No.91 for the 2-day Bob Weikert Memorial this past weekend at ‘The Speed Palace’, they brought some new ideas in hopes of turning their luck around.

 

Weikert Memorial Format

 

Although the lucrative event is sanctioned by the All Star Circuit of Champions, the Weikert Memorial uses its own, unique format.  Full details are included below, but here are the key points for the car counts at Port Royal Speedway’s event:

 

  • single flight time trials, order determined by pill draw
  • points awarded following time trials
  • 10-lap heats, top 8 in each starting lineup is inverted 8 from time trials
  • passing points awarded following heats
  • top 10 in points after qualifying participate in a redraw for their A-main starting spot
  • 11-20 in points after qualifying line up in A-main heads up by points
  • remaining drivers race the B-main with the top 4 finishers tagging the back of 30-lap A-main

 

May 28:  Weikert Memorial Night 1, Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

      (41 cars, Qualifying 31st, Heat 5th, B-main 15th)

 

Saturday was a bit of an uphill battle from the start.  The Capitol Renegade team’s pill draw placed them 35th in the time trial order for the 41 cars on hand.  From that slot, Reinhardt mustered the 31st quickest time in the field and earned 60 points.

 

Reinhardt’s qualifying run put him on the pole of heat number three with a chance to add 100 points if he could hold off the field for 10 laps.  From the inside line, he wasn’t able to take control of the race on the opening lap, so Reinhardt held down second.  Fighting an ill-handling car, he slid backwards to a 5th place finish when the checkered flag fell, adding another 66 points to his total for the night.

 

Following the heat race, the team had a lot to get done before the B-main.  They replaced the steering box on the No.91 and made adjustments that would hopefully enable Reinhardt to race into a top four transfer position.  The 12-lap B-main was his final shot to earn his way into the A-main.  The adjustments would have to be spot on to get there from his 11st starting spot. 

 

Things quickly went from bad to worse when Reinhardt’s No.91 looped around in turn one on the start, completing a full 360-degreen spin and continuing on.  By All Star rules, he was required to restart the race from the rear of the field.  Reinhardt’s night ended with a 15th place finish in the B-main.

 

May 29:  Weikert Memorial Night 2, Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

      (44 cars, Qualifying 22nd, Heat 10th, B-main DNS)

 

Day two of the Weikert Memorial didn’t bring much better fortune for Reinhardt.  He went out late (32nd of 44 cars) and registered the 22nd quickest lap.  That was the good news.

 

Reinhardt started outside the second row in the fourth heat and was working to find a groove that would make his tight race car a little happier.  Instead, he found the outside wall in turn two, damaging the front axle.

 

The Capitol Renegade team, with assistance from multiple other teams, executed a front axle change in the work area to get Reinhardt back on the track.  He finished the qualifying race in 10th.

 

Following the heat race, the team found rear end damage from the earlier impact.  The damage would require a complete change of the rear assembly.  Reinhardt was scheduled to start 13th in the B-main, so the team made the decision to load up and call it a night.  

 

We just have to move on and shake off the weekend.  We’ll keep digging and get this figured out“, Reinhardt said.

Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team will head to Ohio for the weekend with the All Star Circuit of Champions.  The tour will make stops at Attica Raceway Park on Friday and Atomic Speedway on Saturday.  Both tracks will later be a part of the 9-race Ohio Speedweek that will take place June 10th-18th.

 

I’m looking forward to getting back to Attica and building on our improvement there.  Atomic will be a new track for me.  We’ve been getting better on these types of places, so we can use this weekend to get ourselves ready for Ohio Speedweek.“, Reinhardt commented.

Jeff Halligan Earns Podium Finish in Weikert Memorial at Port Royal Speedway

Records Another Top-5 in Makeup Feature On the Same Night

Jeff Halligan and the Risser Motorsports team have been waiting for the Weikert Memorial at Port Royal Speedway since the season began.  Although they have performed well thus far, they felt things were just a tick off.  They decided to make the trip to Selinsgrove Speedway to try some things and get one more race under their belt before the big weekend.

 

May 26:  Thursday Thunder, Selinsgrove Speedway / Selinsgrove, PA

      (20 cars, Qualifying 3rd Group 2, Heat 5th, A-main 11th)

 

Halligan’s No.45 was one of 20 cars pit-side Thursday night at Selinsgrove Speedway.  Following qualifying, the field was divided into two 8-lap heat races to determine the starting lineup for the A-main.  The heats line-ups were set straight-up by their qualifying times.

 

Halligan timed 3rd quickest in Group 2 and thus started inside row two of the second heat.  A stumble on the start cost the Ephrata, PA driver two spots.  He was able to settle into a rhythm but wasn’t able to recapture the lost positions and rode home 5th.

 

The 25-lap main event was run at a blistering pace set by Gio Scelzi.  Scelzi took command from the start.  Meanwhile, 10th starting Jeff Halligan was battling to hang on to a top-10 spot.  The race remained green and went the entire distance, setting a new 25-lap track record of 7:12:535 for Scelzi.  Halligan held on for an 11th place finish.

 

Following their first trip of the year to Selinsgrove Speedway, the team turned their attention to one of the marquee events that is circled on their calendar each year:  The Bob Weikert Memorial at Port Royal Speedway.

 

Weikert Memorial Format

 

Although the lucrative event is sanctioned by the All Star Circuit of Champions, the Weikert Memorial uses its own, unique format.  Full details are included below, but here are the key points for the car counts at Port Royal Speedway’s event:

 

  • single flight time trials, order determined by pill draw
  • points awarded following time trials
  • 10-lap heats, top 8 in each starting lineup is inverted 8 from time trials
  • passing points awarded following heats
  • top 10 in points after qualifying participate in a redraw for their A-main starting spot
  • 11-20 in points after qualifying line up in A-main heads up by points
  • remaining drivers race the B-main with the top 4 finishers tagging the back of 30-lap A-main

 

May 28:  Weikert Memorial Night 1, Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

      (41 cars, Qualifying 30th, Heat 1st, B-main 3rd, A-main 17th)

 

The Risser Motorsports / TheTreeCenter.com / Victory Auto of Lewistown / EMM Sales & Service / Jake’s Golf Carts, No.45 signed in along with 40 other cars at ‘The Speed Palace’ for night number one of the Bob Weikert Memorial.

 

Jeff Halligan was the 22nd driver to hit the track for time trials.  His best lap of 17.073 was a tick slower than the team was hoping for and it landed him 30th overall in the results.

 

The invert for the 10-lap heat races put Halligan on the pole of the second heat.  Jeff led flag-to-flag, winning the heat over Chris Windom by 0.533 seconds.  Normally a heat win would be a ticket to the show but in the Weikert format it simply earns points.  

 

Halligan’s point total following the heat was good, but not good enough to lock into the A-main.  Instead, he started 6th in the 12-lap B-main and would have to race his way in by finishing in the top four.

 

Halligan fought hard to get into the 4th spot by lap 7, then grabbed some insurance by capturing 3rd on a lap 9 restart.  The 3rd place finish gave the Risser Motorsports entry the 23rd starting spot in the night one finale.

 

In the 30-lap feature event, Halligan wasn’t able to make gains during the first half of the event but eventually slid his way inside the top-20 to a 17th place finish.

 

Following racing action, Halligan was awarded the Carquest Perseverance award by the All Star Circuit of Champions.

 

May 29:  Weikert Memorial Night 2, Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

      (44 cars, Qualifying 14th, Heat 1st, A-main 3rd)

 

Jeff and the Risser Motorsports team made the 90 minute trip back to their shop after Saturday night’s race and made the decision to change engines.  An engine change would mean going into Sunday’s race with a bit of an unknown, but they knew they needed to take the risk because the one they had in was just off somehow.  That was a mystery they would have to investigate further later, but for now the goal was to make sure they gave themselves their best shot at winning the Weikert Memorial.

 

The car count increased to 44 for Sunday’s show but the format remained the same.  Two things are required for a team to position itself near the front of the main event field with a shot at winning:  a qualifying lap in the top third of the field and passing multiple cars in the heat race.  Any team who can even do one of those two things puts themselves in a decent position for the night.

 

Halligan received some early feedback on the engine change by way of his qualifying laps.  He was the 41st car to hit the track.  A dirt track dries out and loses grip as laps are run on it, so going out late in a single-flight time trial format is usually a prescription for a poor lap.  It can be a difficult obstacle to overcome.

 

Not this time.  Halligan ripped off a lap of 16.933, ranking him 14th quickest overall.  Goal number one, complete.

 

The next step would be to move forward from his 5th starting spot in heat number two.  Halfway through the 10-lap race, Halligan had gained one spot and sat in 4th.  Then he caught fire, figuratively.

 

Halligan stormed to the lead on lap seven and held on for the win, earning the maximum points available to him.  Goal number two, complete.

 

Halligan was now 4th in the overall point standings for the night and was locked into the redraw for one of the top-10 starting spots in the prestigious Weikert Memorial main event.

 

We just bought this motor from (Mark) Coldren on Wednesday and put it in at 4am this morning.“, Halligan shared during his post-race interview on FloRacing.

 

It had been a late night following Saturday’s race.  Halligan and the Risser Motorsports team traveled 90 minutes back to their shop, washed the car and changed the engine before getting some much needed rest for day number two of the Weikert Memorial.

 

The redraw turned up pill number five for Halligan, putting him inside row three for the 30-lap race.  In the early going, he slipped back to 6th, then recovered to the 5th spot.  He held that spot for nearly 20 laps.  A caution with five laps remaining provided an opportunity.

 

In what seems to be becoming his trademark this season, Halligan saved his best for the closing laps.  He restarted 5th with five laps remaining and drove into 4th one lap later.

 

Carrying a ton of momentum, Halligan dove under Tyler Courtney to claim 3rd with three laps remaining.  With a head of steam, Halligan pulled alongside Brent Marks for 2nd but couldn’t get clear of the No.19m and had to fall in line behind him for one final shot.  He was unable to mount another challenge and finished 0.807 seconds behind Marks on the podium in 3rd spot.

 

In honor of Bob Weikert, Jackson Motorplex (MN) and Huset’s Speedway (SD) had added $5,000 to the prize money for both the 2nd and 3rd place finishers, giving Jeff Halligan and the Risser Motorsports team an $8,300 pay day.

 

I went for clean air in the middle on that restart and started making up ground, so I thought I’m just gonna stay here.”, Halligan explained of the late surge.  “I have to thank Panther Chassis.  This is kind of a new car in 410 racing.  We’ve been working on it trying to get it a little better and I think we’re getting there.”

 

“All year long we’ve been really good late in races, which you obviously want to do, but we need to figure out how to get a little better earlier in the night too.“, Halligan said.

 

May 29:  Completion of May 21st A-main, Port Royal Speedway / Port Royal, PA

      (34 cars, Qualifying 3rd Group C, Heat 2n, A-main 4th)

 

The May 21st feature event that was suspended with 8 laps complete, was resumed following the Weikert Memorial.  Jeff Halligan restarted 4th behind Justin Whittall, Brent Marks and Logan Wagner.

 

The final 17 laps were relatively uneventful.  Halligan held his ground but was unable to advance.  He went on to finish 4th behind Logan Wagner, Brent Marks, and Dylan Cisney, logging a second top-5 finish in the span of just over an hour.

Halligan and the Risser Motorsports team will be back at Port Royal Speedway on Saturday night, June 4th looking to grab their first checkered flag of 2022.

Kody Hartlaub Matches Season Best 2nd Place 358 Sprint Finish at Lincoln; 410 Opportunity On Deck

Team Expands 358 Schedule for Balance of 2022

Kody Hartlaub has been the model of consistency thus far in 2022.  And he’s no one-trick pony.  

 

He has competed at three different tracks and has recorded 8 top-10’s in 9 outings.  At this point in the season, the only box left to check is a victory.  That can’t be far away when a team is this steady.

 

May 28:  Lincoln Speedway / Abbottstown, PA

     (35 cars, Heat 1st, A-main 2nd)

 

Kody Hartlaub Racing is in the midst of a battle for the top spot in the season championship points at Lincoln Speedway.  Steve Owings held the top spot by 90 points over Hartlaub entering competition Saturday night.

 

The Brewer Home Improvements / Moose Blocks / Smith Titanium / SRR Engines / Siegel Racing / T and N Solutions / Jason Emlet Iron Valley Real Estate / Bigham Appraisals / Pretzel Boy / HAAS Shocks / C.H. Folk & Son Feeds / Chop Designs / Herr Electric, Kody Hartlaub Racing No.2 was among 35 entries for the Memorial Day Weekend event.

 

The sizable field was divided into five heats by pill draw.  The top four finishers from each race would transfer to the A-main, with the top two finishers being handicapped to start the 20-lap main event.  The starting field for the finale would be rounded out with the top four finishers from the B-main.

 

Hartlaub had the pole for heat number one, his first front row starting spot of the season.  He led the 10-lap qualifying race wire-to-wire over Steve Owings.

 

With the pair at the top of the point standings, Hartlaub and Owings assumed the 8th and 9th starting spots for the feature event.  Owings slipped by Hartlaub on the opening lap when the outside line didn’t take off as quickly as the inside line.  Hartlaub pursued the No.35 as the pair charged toward the front of the field.

 

Hartlaub reached 4th by lap three, then moved into the 2nd spot behind Owings on lap 7 and went to work to get to the point.  It wasn’t to be on this night, but Hartlaub brought home his second runner-up finish of the season to close out a very solid night.

 

I tried everything to get to Steve (Owings), especially on those two late restarts, but just couldn’t quite get to him.  He was better than me in (turns) one and two.  Maybe if I would’ve gotten to the front first, we could’ve held him off.“, Hartlaub said after the race.

 

With a win awarding 300 points and 2nd place 250, plus all teams being awarded 50 show-up points, Owings extended his point lead over Hartlaub despite the East Berlin, PA driver’s great run.

 

We are where we want to be.  We just don’t have a win yet.  The only night we missed the top ten was when we got involved in a wreck, but we still came back to finish 12th that night.  We’ve been racing more and venturing to new tracks.  That is helping us gain experience.  Experience is what enables teams to turn bad situations into positives.“, Hartlaub commented.

 

410 Sprint Opportunity

 

With a two-week break in their 358 sprint car schedule, Kody Hartlaub Racing will venture into the 410 sprint car world this Saturday night, June 4th, at Lincoln Speedway for the Steve Smith Tribute race, which will award the winner with $19,000 in honor of the Hall of Fame driver’s famous No.19.

 

Hartlaub has made a couple previous appearances in a 410 sprint car.  In 2021 he was at the wheel of another team’s car just to get a little seat time, but this will be his first venture in his own, more familiar equipment.

 

I owe a huge thanks to MooseBlocks.com for arranging this opportunity for me to compete with the 410’s in the Steve Smith Tribute race with one of Shark Racing’s Newman’s Racing Engines under the hood.  My thanks to Shark Racing as well for that.  I really wanted to support the race because Stevie and I are friends and Smith Titanium helps us out a lot.  It means a lot to me to be able to compete in that race.  We have zero expectations but we are sure going to try our hardest.“, an appreciative Hartlaub said.

 

Schedule Expansion, Plus A Look Back

 

It’s been a busy few weeks for Hartlaub.  Leading up to last Saturday night, he competed in events at Path Valley Speedway, Williams Grove Speedway, and Lincoln Speedway.  No matter where he goes this season, he has been consistently near the front.

 

That’s the sign of a strong team that is on the verge of breaking through.

 

Let’s take a quick look back and learn how Hartlaub Racing’s schedule has expanded for the balance of 2022.

 

May 14:  Path Valley Speedway / Spring Run, PA

     (16 cars, Heat 4th, A-main 4th)

 

To improve as a driver and a team, you need to race and you need to face different tracks and challenges.  With that in mind, Kody Hartlaub Racing ventured to Path Valley Speedway on May 14th.  They were among 16 teams to sign in for the 358 sprint car event on the high-banked quarter-mile Pennsylvania oval.

 

Lineups for two heats were set by random draw and all cars would qualify for the 30-lap feature event.  Hartlaub was able to gain one spot in his heat race, advancing from his 5th starting spot to finish 4th.  

 

Hartlaub lined up 7th for the A-main but slipped to 8th on the opening lap.  A red flag on lap two set up a restart that Kody capitalized on, surging into 6th as the field went back to green.

 

As a result of some rain earlier in the evening, the track had a lot of grip and the field was ‘hammer down’, ripping off 28 non-stop, green flag laps after the restart.  Hartlaub was able to track down a couple more competitors before the check checkered flag fell.  As the race drew to a close, he was pushing for a spot on the podium by ran out of time and finished 4th. 

 

We were a little tight in the heat race because we were expecting the track to be a little drier.  One spot better in the heat race would’ve meant one row closer the front for the feature.  That would’ve helped, but we learned a lot, had a good run and put it in the trailer in one piece.  That’s what we came here to do.“, Hartlaub said after the race.

 

May 20:  Williams Grove Speedway / Mechanicsburg, PA

     (27 cars, Heat 5th, A-main 10th)

 

Untimely Spring precipitation in Central Pennsylvania had erased the first three attempts by Williams Grove Speedway to get the 358 sprint car portion of their schedule started this season.  Kody Hartlaub Racing already had plans to compete at ‘The Grove’ on June 10th & July 23rd in two Summer Series events, so with only a half-dozen other 358 sprint car events remaining on the schedule, the team made the decision to add all the remaining shows at the Mechanicsburg, PA oval to their schedule and compete in the season points championship.

 

We have our second motor ready now, so with the delayed start to the 358 season here (at Williams Grove), we decided we were in a position to race all the shows here without risking our season at Lincoln.“, Hartlaub shared.

 

Three 8-lap heats were set up by pill draw for the 27 entries in the pits Friday night, May 20th.  The top six finishers in each transferred directly to the A-main.  Hartlaub started and finished 5th in heat number three, one spot out of the redraw.

 

Hartlaub started 15th in the 20-lap feature event and went to work finding the fastest way around the famous, paper-clip shaped oval.  He gradually worked his way forward and into the top ten as the race drew to a close.  Hartlaub’s progress ended there and he logged a 10th place finish.

 

I’ve been here three or four times before and was never able to get a complete night in.  We would start out good, then something would always happen.  We would either have mechanical issues or get rained out.  It was nice to get a full night in and really be able to get seat time.  The team and I learned a lot tonight.

 

May 21:  Lincoln Speedway / Abbottstown, PA

     (34 cars, Heat 3rd, A-main 6th)

 

On May 21st, Kody Hartlaub Racing returned to their home track, Lincoln Speedway, for the first of two Summer Series events this season.  The always popular Summer Series events for the 358 sprint cars draw competitive fields wherever they are held.

 

At ‘The Fabulous’ Lincoln Speedway as it’s known, 34 cars registered for competition and drew for their starting spot in one of the four heats.  The top five finishers in each 10-lap qualifier would transfer to the A-main, with the top three participating in a redraw for the top twelve starting spots.

 

Hartlaub started inside row two in heat number two.  His No.2 machine was a bit tight, but Hartlaub managed to hang on to finish 3rd and claim a spot in the redraw.  

 

The redraw wasn’t quite as friendly to Hartlaub.  He would have his work cut out for him to get to the front after pulling the 10th starting spot.

 

Hartlaub battled throughout the 25-lap main event, finding a way forward as he has done all season.  On this night he managed a +4, finishing in the 6th position.

 

We finally got a good draw for our heat race and made the feature redraw, but our redraw wasn’t so good.  What do you do; that’s part of it.“, Hartlaub commented with a grin and a shrug.

 

“We can only worry about the things we can control, and that’s what we’re doing.  We’re running pretty well and I’m continuing to learn and make better decisions behind the wheel.”

Following his 2022 410 sprint debut this weekend, Hartlaub will return to 358 sprint car action with races on June 10th at Williams Grove Speedway and June 11th at Lincoln Speedway.

Henderson Stays Consistent in 2022 With a Pair of Top Fives at Knoxville and Huset’s

Justin Henderson picked up a pair of top five finishes behind the wheel of the Mike Sandvig Motorsports No. 7 410 Sprint Car last weekend. Henderson finished fourth at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa on Saturday and fifth at Huset’s Speedway on Sunday.

 

Henderson also competed in two nights of racing behind the wheel of his family owned MAX Motorsports No. 83 360 Sprint Car where he finished seventh on Friday at Jackson Motorplex and 23rd at Knoxville as part of a Saturday night doubleheader.

 

“It wasn’t a bad weekend by any means and it shows we are consistent,” said Henderson. “In terms of our region of sprint car racing, we are a top car and we continue to knock off top fives on a regular basis.”

 

Henderson kicked off the weekend on Saturday at Knoxville Raceway where he qualified second quickest among 31 cars in attendance with a fastest lap of 15.265 seconds. He then advanced three positions in a heat race to finish third and locked himself directly into the night’s A-main event.

 

“We’ve got a really good car to start the night at Knoxville and that’s something to be happy about,” he said. “I know I’m always saying it, but the beginning of the night can make or break you and luckily it’s been good to us at Knoxville.”

 

Starting from the inside-second row of the A-main event, Henderson fell back to fourth on the opening lap. Following a yellow flag with 16 laps remaining, Henderson inherited the third position and he remained in the spot for the next 10 laps. With five laps to go, Henderson got bottled up behind a lap car while engaged in a three-wide battle for the runner-up position. The bobble caused him to fall to fourth, where he’d take the checkered flag at the conclusion of the event.

 

“If not for the lapped car there when we caught second it was going to be a wild three-wide battle in the turn,” said Henderson.” It was a lot of fun out there and anytime you can go toe to toe with Brian Brown and the McCarl’s at Knoxville you know you have a good car. We just need to put 20 laps together and we’ll be talking about wins instead of top fives.”

 

The team next headed to Huset’s Speedway on Sunday, where Henderson qualified fifth quickest out of 25 cars in attendance with a fastest lap of 11.137 seconds before advancing one position in a heat race to finish second. He earned a spot in the re-draw as a result and drew the No. 7 pill to claim an inside-fourth row starting spot for the feature.

 

In a race that went non-stop for 25 laps, Henderson was able to rally forward two positions to score a fifth-place finish. The top five was the team’s fifth in eight starts this season.

 

“It was really hard to pass as the track developed a lip early and was fast up top,” he said, “The bottom was ok early, but once it went away, we pretty much just had to ride around and hope for something to happen.”

 

Next up for Henderson and Sandvig will be a Memorial Day weekend tripleheader. They’ll start out at Knoxville Raceway on Saturday, before joining the Northern Outlaw Sprint Association at Huset’s Speedway on Sunday and Monday for two nights. Henderson sits third in the track point standings at Knoxville and first at Huset’s entering the weekend.

 

“I think we are in for a really good weekend and we get an extra show to make some good money,” said Henderson. “For me this sport is all about momentum and I think it’s time we start a nice little streak and pick up some wins.”

 

While the Memorial Day weekend brings about an extra night of racing and the opportunity to make some good money, Henderson is also grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the men and women who have and are serving our country.

 

“I’m really grateful for those who have given their lives to allow us to live freely as American citizens and there’s never enough chances to say thank you to them,” said Henderson.” Not only those who we have lost, but those still serving today. To serve and fight like that takes a different breed of person. I wouldn’t be talking about racing on the weekends without those men and women and hopefully we can grab a win in their honor.”
