Capitol Renegade Team Inching Closer to Consistent Top-10’s

In three races in Central Pennsylvania last week, Kyle Reinhardt qualified for all three dashes, won two heats, and earned a starting spot no worse than 7th in the three feature events.  Sounds like an excellent week, doesn’t it?  Unfortunately, the story doesn’t end that way.

 

8/26:  Grandview Speedway – Bechtelsville, PA

      (26 cars, Qualifying 12th, Heat 1st,  Dash 5th, A-main 24th)

 

Thursday night, 26 teams made the trek to Eastern Pennsylvania to compete at the 1/3rd mile clay oval.  Reinhardt qualified mid-pack with a lap of 12.016, placing him 12th quick.  The single group qualifying format placed the All Star Rookie of the Year candidate on the pole for the 3rd heat.  

 

Reinhardt capitalized on the starting spot, holding the lead throughout the 8-lap contest, winning by 6-tenths of a second over Justin Peck and locking himself into the dash redraw.

 

The redraw wasn’t as friendly.  Reinhardt drew pill number five, giving him the inside row three starting spot.  Kyle was unable to gain any positions in the 6-lap dash but did hold onto 5th at the checkered flag.  

 

The real loss in the dash wasn’t positions, it was the motor.  It came up lame in the final lap, leaving the Capitol Renegade team a very small window of time to make repairs or swap motors, depending on the diagnosis.  The team quickly determined an engine change would be needed but there wasn’t sufficient time to do so, leaving the team with only one option to collect a paycheck for the night.  They would have to give up their 5th starting spot and elect to start at the rear of the field.  Reinhardt would take the green, then park the No.91 immediately to prevent further damage.

 

A solid night that looked primed to provide Reinhardt with a top-5 finish, instead left him watching from the sideline.

  

8/27:  Williams Grove Speedway – Mechanicsburg, PA

 

Unfortunately, Mother Nature claimed victory on the second night of the 4-race swing through PA.  Weather forced the legendary oval, Williams Grove Speedway, to cancel the annual Jack Gunn Memorial Twin 20’s program.  

 

8/28:  Lincoln Speedway – Abbottstown, PA

      (38 cars, Qualifying 4th in group D/20th overall, Heat 1st, Dash 4thA-main 6th)

 

Following the night off due to rain, the All Star tour rolled into the Pigeon Hills of Pennsylvania for the Kramer Klash, in honor of the late Kramer Williamson.  The field was 38 teams strong in pursuit of the $7,300 winner’s share.

 

Kyle Reinhardt was the 31st overall to go under the clock for qualifying.  His 13.562 second lap was solid for the late slot and good enough for 4th in his group and the pole of the 4th heat.

 

For the second consecutive night, the Neptune City, NJ native did not waste the opportunity, grabbing the lead at the drop of the green.   Reinhardt never gave up the top spot, cruising to a convincing 1.7 second victory over Alan Krimes. 

 

Reinhardt had to be sensing deja vu.  First there was the pole and heat win just like Thursday, then yet again the dash redraw turned up the 5th starting spot in the first dash. This time he was able to make forward progress, grabbing the 4th spot and securing the 7th starting spot for the A-main in the process.

 

The 35-lap feature at the 3/8-mile high banked oval provided the stage for Reinhardt to play out the final act of a solid night.  He raced solidly inside the top 10 throughout the event, ultimately netting one spot and finishing 6th, completing his career-best overall night at Lincoln Speedway.

 

8/29:  BAPS Motor Speedway – Newberrytown, PA

      (32 cars, Qualifying 4th in group A/5th overall, Heat 2nd, Dash 4th, A-main 23rd)

 

The fourth and final night of the PA swing for the All Stars led the series to Lincoln Speedway, a 4-tenths mile oval in the heart of Posse country.  

 

The night started well for Reinhardt, drawing the number one slot for qualifying.  He promptly turned in the 5th quickest time overall and 4th fastest in his group, once again putting the Capitol Renegade No.91 on the heat race pole.

 

Despite a side by side battle through the first corner at the start, Reinhardt could not claim the top spot from Bill Balog, who used the cushion to build momentum.  The pair exited turn two and powered down the backstretch with Reinhardt nipping at Balog’s heels.  On lap 3, Lucas Wolfe worked his way past Reinhardt, claiming the runner up spot at the line.  Kyle was up to the challenge, crossing over and pulling a slider on Wolfe to retake the spot on the next lap.  From there, Reinhardt built up a cushion and rode home in 2nd.  

 

Reinhardt was locked into the dash redraw for the 3rd race in a row and this time his pick was a little better.  Rolling off from inside row 2 in the dash, Reinhardt was looking to earn a starting spot at the front of the field.  Things didn’t quite work out that way.  The setup was off a touch, and he slipped to a 4th place finish, once again slotting him in the 4th row for the A-main.

 

The Capitol Renegade team applied what they had learned from the 4-lap dash and rolled Reinhardt out for the 30-lap feature.  It was evident from the drop of the green that Reinhardt had something good to work with.  As he flashed under the flag stand to complete lap 1, he was already up to 5th position.  A split second later, contact from behind turned Reinhardt around and sent him sliding down across the front straightaway and into the inside barrier.  The impact damaged his J&J Auto Racing No.91 and ended the night for the Capitol Renegade team.  They were officially credited with a 23rd place finish.

 

We had good speed all weekend, making 3-of-3 dashes, but we only have one finish to show for it.  I’m happy about our night at Lincoln.  That’s the best I’ve run there.  The other two nights were just things that were out of our control, so it’s frustrating.”, Reinhardt commented.  

 

He continued, “At Grandview we would have started 5th in the feature but we hurt the motor at the end of the dash and ran out of time to change it.  We had a great start to the night last night at BAPS.  Started 7th in the feature and was up to 5th on lap one but unfortunately got turned on the front stretch and it ended our night.  I have to thank my guys and Capitol Renegade for everything they do for me“.

 

Up Next:

 

There are ten races remaining in the All Star Circuit of Champions 2021 season.  The first two of those will take place this weekend, September 3rd-4th at Attica Raceway Park in Ohio.  Kyle and the Capitol Renegade team struggled at Attica earlier this season but have been consistently fast over the past six weeks.  They will carry that momentum into Attica to go after the $10,000 top prize in Saturday night’s finale, the “Attica Ambush”.

Kyle Reinhardt Caps All Star Weekend with Top 10 at Waynesfield

4-Race PA Swing on Tap to Close Out August

The All Star Circuit of Champions resumed competition last weekend following a three week break in their 2021 schedule that annually allows teams the opportunity to compete in the 360 and 410 sprint car Nationals at Knoxville.

 

The Capitol Renegade team was looking to carry all the positives from their time at Knoxville, including the 360 Nationals Rookie of the Year honors for wheelman Kyle Reinhardt and a solid appearance in the B-main at the 410 Nationals, into  the stretch run of the All Star season.

 

8/20:  I-96 Speedway – Lake Odessa, MI

      (21 cars, Qualifying 9th, Heat 2nd,  A-main 15th)

 

First up in the series’ return to action was a trip to I-96 Speedway in Michigan.  When the tour last visited the 3/8-mile clay oval, Kyle Reinhardt logged a top-10 and was looking for more success this time around.  There were 21 total teams pit side for racing Friday night.

 

Reinhardt was the 14th driver to hit the track for qualifying but was able to log a solid lap that placed him 9th quick overall.  The effort set him up with the outside front row starting spot in the 3rd 8-lap heat race.  

 

Reinhardt ‘held serve’ in the heat race, riding home in 2nd and locking himself and the team into a top-10 starting spot for the A-main.

 

In the 30-lap finale, the All Star Rookie of the Year candidate struggled.  He and the team had ‘missed it’, as they say when referencing the correct setup.  Reinhardt slipped back out of the top 10 and when the curtain closed on the night’s competition, he found himself in 15th position.

  

8/21:  Waynesfield Raceway Park – Waynesfield, OH

      (22 cars, Qualifying 8th, Heat 2nd, A-main 8th)

 

As a result of expected weather around Plymouth Speedway in Indiana, the original planned destination of the series on Saturday, a mid-week schedule change was made that brought the series back to Waynesfield Raceway Park in Ohio.  

 

It was only the second visit for Reinhardt, with the first being in the midst of the hectic Ohio Sprint Speedweek back in June.  That night started off well for the Neptune City, NJ native with a top-10 qualifying effort in a field of 42 cars, but he and the team were not able to carry that momentum throughout the night, winding up with a 19th place finish. 

 

Saturday’s objective:  put a full night together.  It is a challenge the team has faced often in 2021, but a team can only race one race at a time.  They needed to start by achieving the objective in Ohio, then they could worry about the next race.

 

Step one of that objective went well.  Reinhardt recorded the 8th quickest time among the 22 cars that went under the clock.  

 

Step two also went well. The Capitol Renegade, Champion Brands, Henry’s Wrecker Service No.91 started and finished 2nd in heat number two, securing a 10th place starting spot for the 30-lap feature event.

 

The 3rd and final step of the team’s Waynesfield goal was all that remained to successfully achieve the objective.  Reinhardt and team came through.  The right decisions were made in the pits and on the track, enabling Kyle to compete for the entire distance, make some forward progress, and flash under the checkered flag with an 8th place finish.

 

Both nights this weekend we were decent.  We were right there, but the motor stumbled a bit at the start of the heat.  When you start on the front row, you have to win.  We weren’t able to do that.  That was the difference between a good night and a great night the last two races.  We had a better car than our results showed“, Reinhardt commented.  

 

Up Next:

 

As August draws to a close, Reinhardt will find himself back on familiar turf.  Kyle and the Capitol Renegade team will continue their rookie campaign with the All Star Circuit of Champions by competing in a 4-race stint through Central Pennsylvania.  The swing will kick off at Grandview Speedway on Thursday, August 26th, followed by Williams Grove Speedway Friday, Lincoln Speedway Saturday, and BAPS Motor Speedway Sunday.

 

I’m excited about these upcoming races“, Reinhardt shared.  “We’ve been getting better at time trialing and having speed early in the night.  We have often struggled later in the night though.  We believe we can use our experience in PA to help us be better later in the night too.  If we can do that and put a whole night together, we can have a really good week.”

Reinhardt Produces Career Best Finish at Knoxville Nationals

Just Misses Championship Finale Despite Issues

Kyle Reinhardt was hoping the third time would be the charm.  

 

He had tried twice before to make the prestigious Knoxville Nationals, the most recent being in 2018 in the Capitol Renegade No.91.  Each of his prior attempts would likely best be described as long shots.  This year was different.

 

The Capitol Renegade program has come a long way since 2018.  That year, their week in Knoxville included a scratch on their qualifying night and they opted not to run the D-main on Championship Saturday.  This year, Reinhardt and Capitol Renegade had a legitimate shot at making the big show together.  

 

8/11:  410 Sprint Car Knoxville Nationals – Knoxville Raceway – Knoxville, IA

      (Qualifying Night:  49 cars, Qualifying 32nd, Heat 1st,  A-main 21st)

 

As is always the case with the large number of cars that enter the Knoxville Nationals, half of the field qualifies on Wednesday night, while the remaining teams qualify on Thursday night.  

 

Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team were among 49 cars slated to qualify on Wednesday, the opening night of the 60th Annual edition of “The Nationals”.  The All Star Circuit of Champions Rookie of the Year candidate was the 38th driver to take to the track for time trials.  On his second circuit, he logged the 32nd quickest lap in the field.  

 

Reinhardt knew his No.91 had a better lap in it, but the motor wasn’t exactly cooperating during his shot under the clock.  However, it was good enough to provide him with an outside front row starting spot in the second heat.  The crew went to work after time trials to make sure Reinhardt had what he needed to capitalize on the starting spot because the top 4 finishers would transfer directly to the night’s A-main, providing a solid opportunity to accumulate points for the week.  The better the finish, the better their position to make the A-main on Championship Saturday, which would pay a hefty $10,000 to start.

 

The car was stout in the heat race.  Reinhardt blasted to the lead at the drop of the green.  He never relinquished the top spot, cruising to the win by 2.144 seconds over Zeb Wise, and locking himself into the 25-lap feature event later that night.

 

Unfortunately, just a few laps into the A-main, the earlier issues Reinhardt bubbled up again and he slid backwards in the field, ultimately finishing 21st.

 

Motor issues hurt our time trial, got it sorted out and won our heat race, but motor issues resurfaced in the (feature) race, and we couldn’t go anywhere.  Car was fast when it would run, which was encouraging, but at this deal you can’t afford to miss the slightest opportunity“, Wayne Quackenbush of Capitol Renegade shared.

  

8/13:  410 Sprint Car Knoxville Nationals – Knoxville Raceway – Knoxville, IA

      (Hard Knox Night:  69 cars, Qualifying 5th in Flight #2, Heat 2nd, A-main 9th)

 

With both qualifying nights in the books, points were tallied to set up the remainder of the week.  The top 16 teams in points were automatically locked into the A-main on Championship Saturday, while the next 10 teams in points would make up the first five rows of Saturday’s B-main.  The remaining teams, 27th and lower in points, would compete in Friday night’s Hard Knox program to take another shot at making Saturday’s finale.  

 

The 69 teams who signed in to make the most of Friday’s second opportunity were divided into two flights for timed qualifying.  Kyle Reinhardt was the 18th of 34 cars to take to the track in Flight #2.  He tripped the timing light on his second lap with a 16.031, ranking him 5th quickest for the night.

 

In the fifth heat, Kyle started inside row two behind the front row of Wayne Johnson and Sammy Swindell.   Reinhardt charged past Swindell into 2nd on the opening lap and never looked back.  He was unable to close on Johnson but rode home comfortably in 2nd, locking into Friday’s main event.

 

Reinhardt and team had a solid night going and had put themselves in position to achieve the main goal of the week.  The Capitol Renegade, Champion Brands, Henry’s Wrecker Service No.91 would line up 4th in Friday’s 25-lap A-main, behind a front row consisting of the legendary Jac Haudenchild and the ever-popular Rico Abreu.

 

Reinhardt held serve near the front of the field, running 3rd or 4th during the first half of the event.  At the midpoint of Friday’s A-main, the Neptune City, NJ native was still running in a transfer spot to put himself in his first ever Knoxville Nationals Championship Saturday A-main, but issues arose that left the dangling carrot just out of reach.  

 

Unfortunately, I lost brakes and couldn’t hold the bottom. Dropped back a few spots and finished 9th”, Reinhardt commented.  

 

He would have one more shot on Saturday night to advance from his 15th starting spot in the B-main to a top-4 finish to make the show.

 

8/14:  410 Sprint Car Knoxville Nationals – Knoxville Raceway – Knoxville, IA

      (Championship Saturday:  88 cars, B-main 22nd)

 

Saturday’s mission at Knoxville was clear cut for Kyle Reinhardt:  Roll off 15th in the B-main, pass eleven cars, and transfer to the A-main.  It was also a tall order in a last chance qualifying race that had a starting lineup that was better than almost any feature event across the country on any given night.  Everything would have to be perfect.  

 

It didn’t take Reinhardt long Saturday night to determine things were not perfect.  The brake issue from Friday night reared its head again early in the B-main.  Attempting to be fast around Knoxville with brake issues was an unwinnable battle.  Reinhardt eventually retired from the event and was officially credited with 22nd, bringing an end to the team’s Nationals week.  

 

“I have mixed emotions.  We were so close.  Friday was our moment.  Despite our motor and brake issues, we were right there, fighting for it, running in a transfer spot.  To be that close and not make it is really disappointing”, Reinhardt commented.  “We haven’t had brake issues all year, so it’s frustrating for it to happen here.  All that said, the B-main is nothing to be ashamed of here.  We have nothing to hang our heads about“, he concluded.

Kyle and the Capitol Renegade team will resume their All Star Circuit of Champions rookie campaign this week with events in Michigan and Indiana on August 20th and 21st.  Friday night, the series will compete for $5,000 to win at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, MI.  The tour will move on to Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, IN for a shot at the $6,000 winner’s share on Saturday night.  Just 16 races remain on the series’ 2021 schedule and Reinhardt currently sits 9th in points in his first season on the tour.

 

SCHEDULE UPDATE:

The 8/21 event at Plymouth Speedway has been CANCELLED.  Instead, Kyle and the All Stars will race at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Ohio Saturday night.

In recent years, more and more drivers and teams have been making the journey to Knoxville, IA one week earlier than usual.  The Knoxville Nationals for 410 sprint cars have become so prestigious and offer a purse that compares to no other, which has led many teams to take every opportunity to get track time on the black dirt at the “Sprint Car Capital of the World”. 

 

The 3-day 360 Sprint Car Nationals and the Capitani Classic for 410 sprint cars provide multiple opportunities for teams seeking those extra laps at Knoxville.  Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team inked those events on their schedule for the very same reason.

 

8/5:  360 Sprint Nationals – Knoxville Raceway – Knoxville, IA

      (43 cars:  Qualifying 26th, Heat 2nd,  A-main 24th)

 

The 31st Annual 360 Sprint Car Nationals kicked off Thursday night at Knoxville Raceway with qualifying for the first half of the registered field.  The large field is traditionally split into two nights for qualifying.  Each time they hit the track, teams accumulate points, which ultimately line up a series of main events on Saturday.

 

Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team were in the house to take a shot at their first 360 Nationals.  Despite an unlucky pill draw that placed him last in a queue of 43 cars for laps under the clock, Reinhardt managed a respectable 26th quickest time.

 

Brian Brown, who started alongside polesitter Reinhardt in the first heat, beat the No.91 to the first corner and kept a firm grasp on the top spot throughout the 8-lap qualifying event.  Reinhardt held on to 2nd ahead of Cory Eliason and Shane Golobic, who claimed the remaining transfer positions for the night’s A-main.

 

The All Star Circuit of Champions Rookie of the Year candidate started 19th in the A-main but had motor issues from the start and slid back in the field.  After a handful of laps, Reinhardt made the unwanted left hand turn into the pits and called it an early night.  The 24th place finish put a damper on the decent points night the team had going and significantly changed how their Saturday would play out.

 

“The motor wasn’t taking off the way we wanted in the heat race, so we made some adjustments.  Unfortunately, it got worse, so I had to pull off early to avoid bigger issues”, Reinhardt shared.

  

8/7:  360 Sprint Nationals – Knoxville Raceway – Knoxville, IA

      (90 cars:  C-main 3rd, B-main 15th)

 

The final day of the 360 Nationals at Knoxville consists of a series of main events, lined up based on the points teams accumulated on their qualifying days.  Kyle Reinhardt found himself ranked 51st of the 90 drivers who took to the track on the two previous nights.  The top 20 were locked into the 25-lap A-main, 21-40 into the 15-lap B-main and 41-60 would make up the 12-lap C-main.  

 

From his 11th starting spot in the C-main, Reinhardt would need to find his way to a top-4 finishing position to advance to the B-main.  From the drop of the green, he wasted no time beginning his charge forward.  By lap three, the Neptune City, NJ native had wheeled his way to the 5th position, within striking distance of the final transfer spot.  On lap 6, Reinhardt pushed his way into 3rd, and he held onto that transfer spot the rest of the way to finish +8 in the event.

 

Reinhardt’s momentum continued when the B-main took to the track.  Although it was a tall order to make his way to a top-4 finish and a spot in the A-main from his 21st starting spot, Kyle  went to work on that goal.  Although he came up short, he was +6 and finished 15th.  After passing a total of 14 cars in a combined 27 laps on Saturday, it was clear the Capitol Renegade team had resolved their engine issues.  If not for the setback on Thursday night, it certainly seemed the team would have made the 360 Nationals A-main on their first attempt.

 

While he fell short of his goal to make the A-main, Reinhardt’s performance was good enough to earn him the 31st Annual 360 Nationals Rookie of the Year award!

 

8/8:  410 Sprint Capitani Classic – Knoxville Raceway – Knoxville, IA

      (65 cars:  Qualifying 29th in Flight 1, Heat 10th, B-main 11th)

 

Sunday night brought a return to 410 sprint car competition for Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team.  The Capitani Classic is a great event on its own, but also serves as valuable track time prior to the Nationals, which kick off Wednesday night.  65 teams signed in to capitalize on that opportunity.  

 

The large field was divided into two flights for qualifying.  Reinhardt was the 16th car to go under the clock.  He registered a disappointing 29th quickest time of the 33 cars to attempt qualifying in the first flight.  Given the format, a poor qualifying effort meant it would be an uphill battle from that point forward.

 

The struggles continued for Reinhardt in his heat race.  He started and finished 10th, relegating him to a 17th starting position in the first B-main.  Only the top three finishers would advance to the 25-lap Capitani Classic A-main.  Although he wasn’t able to transfer, there was some good news when Reinhardt passed six cars to finish 11th.  It was too little, too late on that night, but it was progress toward the upcoming 410 Nationals later in the week.  

 

“It’s been taking us too long to find speed here each night.  We struggle early, then catch up with our adjustments.  We’re working hard to fix that for The Nationals”, Reinhardt commented.

Reinhardt and Team Showing Measurable Improvement

Finishes Don’t Tell the Full Story

If your method of getting race results is to check feature rundowns on your favorite website, or check quick results on social media, you may not know the full story of how Kyle Reinhardt’s rookie season with the All Star Circuit of Champions is going.  You’ve certainly seen his name several times and you’ve read about some notable achievements, but if you look a little closer, it might be going better than you think.  More on that later.

 

7/29:  Missouri State Fair Speedway – Sedalia, MO

      (23 cars:  Qualifying 11th, Heat 1st,  Dash 8th, A-main 17th)

 

On the final Thursday of July, the All Star series rolled into Sedalia, MO for stop number five of the “Thunder Through the Plains” swing.  The fairgrounds half mile dirt oval drew a group of 23 cars for the $10,000 to win Ron Ditzfeld Memorial.  Kyle Reinhardt’s night started with a respectable qualifying run , 11th quickest in the field.  The night went from good to better when the Rookie of the Year candidate was victorious in heat number two, locking himself and the Capitol Renegade team into the dash redraw.

 

Reinhardt ultimately started 8th in the 35-lap A-main and raced inside the top 10 for the first half of the event.  He had moved his J&J chassis within striking distance of the top-5, holding down 6th on lap 15.  Following a lengthy red flag for Zeb Wise, who went over the fence off turn two, things started to go downhill for Reinhardt.  

 

Unsure why the handling had changed, Reinhardt wrestled with his mount trying to regain a rhythm.  Despite what turned out to be a tire issue, he held on to a top 10 spot until the final seven laps, then faded to a 17th place finish as the issue with his No.91 got significantly worse.  

  

7/30:  34 Raceway – West Burlington, IA

      (23 cars:  Qualifying 4th, Heat 3rd,  Dash 2nd, A-main 19th)

 

The swing trudged on through the hot and humid Midwest summer weather, this time chugging into Iowa to compete at the 3/8-mile clay oval.  Teams were working hard, traveling, and racing in the midst of a string of days with a heat index of 114 degrees. 

 

Like the night before, 23 team signed in to compete.  However this night got off to an even better start for Reinhardt than the night before.  He tripped the timing loop with the 4th quickest lap in the field, putting himself and his team in great position for the remainder of the show.  

 

Reinhardt finished 3rd in heat number one, transferring to the A-main and locking into the dash redraw once again.  The redraw was a little more friendly on this occasion, providing Reinhardt with the outside front row starting spot.  He was able to battle his way to the lead at the start of the dash but gave way to Bill Balog one lap later, then held on to 2nd and the A-main front row starting spot that came with it.

 

In the 30-lap feature event, Reinhardt held solid in the top-5 throughout the event and was poised to finally realize some payoff for all the hard work and recent speed.  With five laps remaining, the rug was pulled out from under Reinhardt when his right-rear tire went down, sending him to the sideline and a disappointing 19th place finish.

 

7/31:  Knoxville Raceway – Knoxville, IA

      (46 cars:  Qualifying 7th in group, Heat 5th, B-main 10th)

 

Saturday led teams to the “Sprint Car Capitol of the World”, Knoxville Raceway, for the finale of the 2021 edition of “Thunder Through the Plains”.  A stout field of 46 cars were pit-side to compete for  the $7,000 top prize, which meant there would be five groups for qualifying.  

 

Kyle Reinhardt was the 26th car to go under the clock in qualifying.  His time was only good enough for 7th in Group C, creating a bit of an uphill battle to make his way to the A-main.  He nearly climbed that hill from his 7th starting spot in heat three, finishing 5th, just one position out of a transfer spot.  Instead, he would need to climb from 6th to 4th in the B-main achieve that objective.  It was not to be though, as Reinhardt slipped a few spots to a 10th place finish, missing the cut and ending the night for the Capitol Renegade team.

 

“We didn’t time well at Knoxville but I learned every time I went out.  Knoxville races different than anywhere else, so we’re all working hard to get better there.  That’s a big reason we’re going to race the 360 Nationals and the Capitani Classic before the 410 Nationals”, Reinhardt shared.

  

“We had good speed all week and that’s what it takes to win these races.  We didn’t get the finishes we wanted, but we’ve been putting ourselves in position to compete for wins”, Reinhardt commented.

 

The stats certainly back up Reinhardt’s statement.  Let’s examine his dash participation.  Being in the dash means a driver will start within the top 8 positions of a feature, which substantially increases their chances of winning.  The Neptune City, NJ native has put the Capitol Renegade No.91 into 5 of the last 7 dashes.  That equates to a 71% success rate.  Compare that to a similar 7-race stretch back in May, during which the team qualified for the dash a mere 14% of the time.   

 

That trend of improvement is visible in the stats month by month ever since the season kicked off in February.  Given what we’ve seen lately, it’s going to be exciting to see what the remaining months of the 2021 season bring for this young team.  Stay tuned!

Newlin’s Season Still Plagued by Gremlins

Whatever joke the universe is playing on Zach Newlin’s 2021 season, the gig is up.  You can stop now.  It’s not funny.  

 

Newlin has had a lot of success in his 20-plus year racing career.  2021 may be the most challenging he has ever been through.

After losing their second motor in as many outings at Williams Grove Speedway back on July 16th, Zach Newlin and the Mansberger Motorsports team were back at the legendary Central Pennsylvania oval on July 30th with an emergency reserve bullet under the hood.  

 

The rest of Friday night’s story is unfortunately short.  During hot laps, Newlin experienced a severe vibration in the 21m.  The vibration was significant enough they would not be able to compete safely.  The team went to work trying to diagnose the problem, but had little success.  They missed their heat race as they continued to pursue the root cause.  Since a car must take the green flag in the A-main to collect any prize money, Newlin and Mansberger made the decision to take the green from their 19th starting position, then pull in immediately as a safety precaution. 

 

With no 358 sprint car racing at Williams Grove Speedway scheduled in August, Newlin and the Mansberger Motorsports team will sit out until the division returns on September 3rd.  They will use the time to regroup, reset their motor program, and go over their equipment thoroughly to resolve the vibration issue.

 

There are a few races remaining and this team wants nothing more than to finish strong.  They know their podium finish and top-10 early in the year were no fluke.  Entering the off-season with positive vibes and starting to build momentum for 2022 are essential right now.

Kyle Reinhardt Finds Qualifying Speed, Captures 1st Quick Time Award

3 Dash Appearances in First 3 Thunder Swing Races

In sprint car racing there are seemingly hundreds of variables on any given night.  Finding the right combination for success is a tough challenge, even for the most experienced team.  Making things even more challenging, the variables are constantly changing.  The right combination for qualifying isn’t usually what will make a team fast in the feature. Kyle Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team have been working hard, learning and problem-solving all season as they battle through their rookie year on the All Star Circuit of Champions tour.  Top of mind lately has been improving their qualifying program.

 

7/23:  Lake Ozark Speedway – Eldon, MO

      (30 cars:  Qualifying 2nd, Heat 5th,  Dash 7th, A-main 10th)

 

Friday night, 30 teams signed in for the All Star Circuit of Champions kickoff to their annual “Thunder Through the Plains” swing.  The swing consists of 7 races at 6 tracks in 9 days across Missouri, Kansas and Iowa.

 

The All Star format for 30 cars or less calls for 2-lap time trials as a single group, three 8-lap heat races with six cars transferring to the A-main, a 6-lap dash and a B-main to set the feature field.

 

Kyle Reinhardt got the night started on a positive note for the Capitol Renegade team by registering the 2nd quickest lap in the field.  It was especially satisfying coming off the Kings Royal week at Eldora, where the team raced well but wasn’t able to find the speed they needed in time trials.  Nights that start with a less than ideal qualifying result mean teams have to play catch up throughout the night.  With a good qualifying effort, the team can save their equipment a little until it really counts at the end of the night.  The qualifying effort at Lake Ozark would lock him into the dash redraw, as long as Reinhardt could finish in the top six of his heat.  It was a mission he was able to complete, finishing 5th in heat two.

 

At the dash redraw, Reinhardt drew the 6th starting spot for the 8-car, 6-lap event.  The Neptune City, NJ native finished 7th in the dash, putting him inside the 4th row to start the 30-lap A-main.  Reinhardt ran steadily inside the top 10 during the feature event, slipping a couple spots late in the race.  The top-10 finish was a solid night for the Capitol Renegade team.  

  

7/24:  Lake Ozark Speedway – Eldon, MO

      (27 cars:  Qualifying 2nd, Heat 6th,  Dash 8th, A-main 24th)

 

The series was back at Lake Ozark for a second consecutive night with 27 teams signed in, which meant the same format would be in use again Saturday.  Also like the night before, Kyle Reinhardt kicked off the night on a high note by logging the 3rd fastest lap in the field.  It was particularly satisfying to back up the qualifying result from the prior night and know they had made real progress with their qualifying program.

 

Reinhardt transferred to the A-main through his heat race, and as the transfer with the quickest qualifying time, advanced to the dash redraw.  The random draw wasn’t friendly to Kyle, landing his No.91 at the back of the lineup in the 8th starting spot.  Reinhardt mixed it up with Gio Scelzi in the dash, swapping positions during the intense 6-lap race, but ultimately settled for an 8th place finish.

 

The All Star Rookie of the Year candidate took the green for the 35-lap feature event from the 8th starting spot.  Reinhardt raced just inside the top 10 during the opening laps, until a severe vibration developed in the Capitol Renegade No.91, causing him to lose positions.  A few laps later, Reinhardt pulled to the infield and retired from competition.  

 

7/25:  Humboldt Speedway – Humboldt, KS

      (19 cars:  Qualifying 1st, Heat 3rd,  Dash 7th, A-main 11th)

 

The All Star “Thunder Through the Plains” caravan traveled four hours west into Kansas for stop number three of the swing.  It was the series first ever visit to the 3/8-mile, high-banked, clay oval named Humboldt Speedway.  For the 3rd consecutive night, the single group qualifying and three heat format would be in use.

 

Kyle Reinhardt was the 5th car to hit the track for time trials and he laid down a blistering 12.055.  It turned out to be a lap that no other team was able to beat.  It was yet another first in a season full of them for Reinhardt.  Despite being close numerous times before, it was his first quick time award in a 410 sprint car.

 

In the first heat race, Reinhardt started 4th and finished 3rd to secure his spot in the dash redraw.  Unfortunately though, his tough luck with recent dash redraws continued, once again pulling the #8 starting spot.

 

Reinhardt was able to gain one spot in the 6-lap dash, which meant the RQM Enterprises team would line up inside row four for the 35-lap feature.  Throughout the first third of the race, Reinhardt battled just outside of the top five.  As the lap numbers climbed, the No.91 lost a little bit of the speed it had early on.  Reinhardt battled hard to remain inside the top-10 but crossed the line 11th at the end of the night.

  

“Pretty special to get my first quick time in a 410!  We are definitely improving as a team on these small tracks, but still working to keep our speed through the entire night”, Reinhardt shared.

 

7/27:  I-70 Speedway – Odessa, MO

      (28 cars:  Qualifying 18th, Heat 7th,  B-main 1st, A-main 13th)

 

After a day off, 28 teams made their way to I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO for night number four of “Thunder Through the Plains”.  For the first time on the swing, Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team, missed the mark for time trials and ended up 18th quickest in the single group qualifying.

 

Starting 6th in the third heat, Reinhardt was unable to hold onto the transfer position.  He finished 7th and the team immediately went to work on changes for the B-main.  When the green flag dropped on the 10-lap B-main, Reinhardt was clearly quicker than he had been.  The clock showed he was circling the speedway an average of three-quarters of a second quicker than he had during the heat race.  The team had clearly found something.  Reinhardt drove away to win by nearly four seconds over the closest competitor.

 

Reinhardt rolled off from the 19th starting spot for his 42nd career All Star Circuit of Champions A-main event.  It turned out to be one of those nights where you just have to grind it out.  Stay in the game, take what you can get, and be there at the end.  Reinhardt did just that, and claimed a 13th place finish following a green-white-checkers finish that turned the event into a 31-lap affair.

 

We’re getting better balance in the car.  We seem to either be fast early and don’t make the right adjustments to keep up with the track, or we struggle early and then find our speed late.  We need to put it all together now“, Reinhardt commented.

The next three days will take Kyle and the Capitol Renegade team through more of Missouri and Iowa to complete the remainder of the All Star Circuit of Champions “Thunder Through the Plains” swing.  The series will stop at Missouri State Fair Speedway on July 29th, 34 Raceway on July 30th, and Knoxville Raceway on July 31st.  More info can be found below.

 

Following those events, the team will remain on the road to open the month of August, competing in the 360 and 410 Nationals at Knoxville Raceway, as well as the Capitani Classic at Knoxville and the Front Row Challenge at Southern Iowa Speedway.

Reinhardt and Capitol Renegade Team Tackle Eldora for First Time

Demanding Summer Schedule Slated Through Knoxville Nationals

Kyle Reinhardt has been anxiously awaiting his first opportunity to tackle “The Big E”, Eldora Speedway, in Western Ohio.  Eldora is legendary and is often mentioned in the same breath as Knoxville Raceway.  Both are facilities where any sprint car driver wants to someday stand in victory lane.

 

In the midst of his first season on the road, traveling with the All Star Circuit of Champions, Reinhardt and the Capitol Renegade team added the Kings Royal to their schedule.  Make that two Kings Royals.  Mid-July 2021 would provide four consecutive nights of racing, including the 37th and 38th Kings Royals.  Both crown jewel events would pay a whopping $175,000 to the winner, so it certainly seemed like a good opportunity to make their debut and learn a lot in one week. 

 

7/14:  Jokers Wild at Eldora Speedway – New Weston, OH

      (57 cars:  Qualifying 21st in Flight 2, Non-Qualifier 1st, Heat 12th,  C-main 4th)

 

The Jokers Wild, a Kings Royal preliminary night, is run under the World of Outlaws format, which meant the 57 teams that entered competition Wednesday night were divided into two flights for qualifying.  Kyle Reinhardt was the 4th car to hit the speedway in Flight 2, but he was unable to capitalize on the early slot.  He registered the 21st quickest lap of the 28 cars in his group,  which meant he would need to race in an 8-lap non-qualifiers event.  Finishing in a transfer position in that race would put Reinhardt directly into a heat race, where he would have a chance to race for a spot in the B-main or A-main.  

 

The Neptune City, NJ native jumped out to a lead in the non-qualifiers race, and never looked back, winning the race and claiming his spot in the third heat race.  After starting 12th in the heat race, Reinhardt was unable to make forward progress in the opening laps.  Needing to get to at least 6th position to avoid the C-main, the team decided to pull in early and save the equipment for the next battle.  

 

Reinhardt started 4th in the C-main, needing to finish in the top two positions to advance to the B-main, however it wasn’t in the cards.  He ‘held serve’ and finished 4th, missing the cut, and bringing an end to his first night at Eldora.

 

Thu 7/15 & Sat 7/17:  38th King’s Royal at Eldora Speedway – New Weston, OH

      (61 cars:  Qualifying 46th overall, Heat 6th,  B-main 14th)

 

Last year, the pandemic caused the 2020 Kings Royal (the 37th edition) to be postponed to 2021.  For Eldora Speedway, scheduling two major events in one week, when combined with logistical and ticketing considerations, meant the 2021 King’s Royal (the 38th edition) would be run before the 37th edition.  Confused?  Yeah, not surprised, but just go with it.

 

The Thursday evening show used the traditional Kings Royal format, with the entire 61 car field qualifying as one group against each other.  An unlucky pill draw put Reinhardt 50th in the time trail order, which he used to log the 46th fastest lap of the evening.  

 

The qualifying result landed the All Star Circuit of Champions Rookie of the Year candidate in the 8th starting spot for heat number four, but he would have to wait nearly two days to take the green flag in that event.  The rains came just after heat one was completed Thursday night, delaying the rest of the program to Saturday afternoon.

 

When the show resumed Saturday afternoon, Reinhardt rolled off in the 8th starting spot of heat number four.  On the tricky daylight surface, he charged into 6th place on the opening lap and held onto the position to transfer directly into the B-main.  In that Last Chance Showdown, passing was at a premium and Reinhardt settled for a 14th place finish.

 

Sat 7/17:  37th King’s Royal at Eldora Speedway – New Weston, OH

      (58 cars:  Qualifying 43rd overall, Heat 8th,  C-main 5th, B-main 16th)

 

Following a break that lasted nearly three hours while the track was reworked and fans were cleared out and reprocessed to allow ticket holders from the rescheduled 2020 event to settle into their seats, 58 teams rolled onto the speedway to kick off what was officially the 37th King’s Royal as the sun began to set.

 

Once again, the special event format was in use, meaning the entire field qualified under the clock as one large group, not in flights.  Qualifying late in this format can be difficult as track conditions deteriorate.  Reinhardt had drawn a high pill, placing him 53rd in line to hit the track.  His best lap of 13.705 was only good enough for 43rd overall.

 

Reinhardt started and finished 8th in the first heat event of the night, transferring him to the 7th starting spot in the C-main.  Kyle was aggressive and managed to battle his way forward as far as 4th for a few laps, but he found himself in 5th when the checkered flag fell on the 12-lap race.  With six cars transferring, it was good enough to move on to the B-main.

 

Starting on the back row of the B-main, in 21st position, knowing it was a tall order to transfer to the A-main, Reinhardt made the most of his seat time.  Once again, he passed cars, chipping his way forward to the 16th spot by the time the 15-lap last chance showdown concluded.  The night, and week, came to a close for the Capitol Renegade team.  

  

When asked about his first experience making laps at Eldora Speedway, without hesitation Reinhardt quickly summed it up in a single word:  “Intense“. 

 

We raced pretty well, but we didn’t time trial well, so it was an uphill battle.  I was learning every time I hit the track and the team was learning too.  We were improving each day“, Reinhardt commented, reflecting on his performance in his inaugural trip to the legendary facility. 

 

“Our goal coming here was to make one of the big shows.  We didn’t accomplish that goal, but we did build a good notebook for next time.  I got more comfortable each night.  If we can step up our qualifying game next time, we’ll be right in the mix.  I’m really looking forward to coming back here in September“, Reinhardt said.

The next four weeks will be quite a test for Kyle and the Capitol Renegade team.  In a few days, they will travel to the Midwest to resume the All Star Circuit of Champions schedule.  The series will close out July with 7 races in 9 days across Missouri, Kansas, and Iowa.  The team will remain on the road to open the month of August, competing in the 360 and 410 Nationals at Knoxville Raceway, as well as the Capitani Classic at Knoxville and the Front Row Challenge at Southern Iowa Speedway.

 

We’ll be away from home for a long stretch this summer but I’m looking forward to getting back to the Midwest and racing a lot.  I’ve raced at Lake Ozark, Knoxville, and Southern Iowa, but like most of our schedule this year, the other stops will be new for us.  We’ll keep building our notebook.  The more we race, the better“, Reinhardt said.

Can’t Shake the Monkey Off Their Back

A flat tire, Mother Nature, and an engine failure.  Those are the answers to a riddle nobody’s laughing at.

 

The question was, “What three things have made Zach Newlin 0-3 at Williams Grove Speedway since he scored a podium finish there on April 23rd?”.  Every racer goes through stretches like that.  The good news is, they can’t last forever.  Right?

 

Friday night, July 16th, Newlin and the Mansberger Motorsports team were among 22 HJ Towing and Recovery 358 sprint cars entered to compete in the Summer Series event at Williams Grove Speedway.  The team came ready with a new bullet under the hood, determined to return to running at the front of the field as they had done earlier in the season.

 

Three 8-lap heats were lined up using a random pill draw, which put Newlin in the 6th starting spot in the third heat.  All cars would qualify for the feature event, with the top four going to the redraw for the top twelve starting spots.

 

Newlin was good from the drop of the green in his heat race, quickly surging forward into a redraw spot, then methodically navigating his way toward the front.  Coming off turn four to take the white flag, just as Zach Daddy made his move into 2nd place, the monkey on the back of Newlin and the 21m team woke up again.  The motor suddenly let go in a big puff of smoke and the fluids poured out all over the Williams Grove clay as the car rolled to a stop at the turn one end of the front stretch.

 

0-4.

 

The 358 sprint cars will be back at “The Grove” on July 30th.  Newlin and Mansberger hope to be among them, but that will depend on how their motor situation unfolds in the coming week.

 

One thing is certain.  When they can eventually ditch that monkey, everyone is going to have to contend with the Newlin/Mansberger combination.

Kyle Reinhardt Searching for Right Combination

Short Track Struggles Continue for All Star Rookie

Kyle Reinhardt and his team knew their first season traveling with the All Star Circuit of Champions would bring a lot of firsts and a lot of challenges.  As they kicked off the second half of their rookie season, they had already seen nearly two dozen new tracks, while competing against some of the toughest competition in the sprint car world.

 

Reinhardt and team had their moments during the first half of the season, capturing his first All Star victory and six top 10’s, but the areas where they struggled had also become apparent.  Consistency during the remainder of the season hinges on overcoming those struggles.

 

7/9:  Stateline Speedway – Busti, NY

      (Qualifying 7th, Heat 3rd,  A-main 14th)

 

A modest field of 21 cars signed in for competition at Stateline Speedway.  Kyle Reinhardt used his number four slot in time trials to register the 7th quickest overall lap.  It was a respectable lap, especially given Reinhardt’s only previous laps at the facility were the three hot laps he had run just minutes before.  

 

Having earned a starting spot on the outside of the front row in the first heat, Reinhardt’s mission was to win and put himself into the night’s dash redraw.  The qualifying event did not unfold under his terms however.  Paul McMahan and Tyler Courtney beat him to the checkers, and as a result, handed Reinhardt the 11th starting position in the A-main instead of a shot at a top-8 slot.

 

The All Star Rookie of the Year contender was unable to build any momentum in the 30-lap A-main at Stateline and ultimately came home 14th.  

 

7/10:  Sharon Speedway – Hartford, OH

      (Qualifying 23rd overall/5th in group C, Heat 5th,  B-main 6th, A-main 19th)

 

The All Star Circuit of Champions series departed New York, journeyed 2 hours southwest, crossing the northwest corner of Pennsylvania, and ventured just into Ohio to visit Sharon Speedway.  Night one of the 2-day Lou Blaney Memorial drew 43 teams for competition.  

 

Reinhardt’s night didn’t get off to an ideal start.  During qualifying, he logged the 5th best lap in Group C and 26th ranked lap overall.  Starting 5th in the third heat, the Neptune City, NJ native had a simple goal:  gain one spot and transfer to the A-main.  Easier said than done.  Despite his best efforts, Reinhardt was unable to overtake Bill Balog for the 4th position and was relegated to the B-main as a result of his 5th place finish. 

 

The Capitol Renegade team used lessons learned in the heat race to make adjustments prior to the B-main, in which Reinhardt would start 4th.  The surface at Sharon Speedway had slicked off, moving the high groove all the way to the fence.  The No.91 felt good at the drop of the green, enabling Reinhardt to get off to a great start.  He was right on Rico Abreu’s tail tank, lining up a pass for 3rd, when he slipped over the cushion and slapped the fence, breaking the W-link.  Reinhardt managed to wrestle his ride to the finish but gave up two spots over the course of the 12-lap event, eventually finishing 6th.

 

Having missed a transfer position during the B-main due to the W-link issue, Reinhardt and team decided to utilize one of their available All Star provisionals to join the back of the field for the A-main.  Reinhardt started 25th and advanced to the 19th spot by the end of the 30-lap event.

 

The Sunday finale of the Lou Blaney Memorial at Sharon Speedway was unfortunately cancelled due to inclement weather.

 

The takeaway from this weekend is we still have work to do on our small track program.  We’ve made some gains on the small, slick, dirty surfaces but we’re still not where we need to be.  We’re close but we need to keep learning and working hard“, Reinhardt shared.

Kyle and the Capitol Renegade team will remain in Ohio to run the 37th and 38th King’s Royal events at Eldora Speedway July 14th-17th.  It will be Reinhardt’s first trip to ‘The Big E’ and he is excited for the opportunity.  

 

I’m excited to get back to a big, fast track and to finally run Eldora.  Our big track program is good and we will get four consecutive nights there, which is a big plus“, Reinhardt shared.  “Hopefully we’ll be good from the time we unload but as we learn things, we can apply them the very next day.  Being at Eldora multiple nights will help accelerate our learning curve.”
